It’s incredibly difficult to make combat-orientated third-person character action games stand out in this day and age, but by hook and by crook, Hell Is Us has our attention.
The game, which has been showcased at multiple State of Plays now, promises a semi-open sandbox in a hostile world. It blends dark fantasy with contemporary technology, so you’ll be armed with both a drone and a sword from a different timeline. You’ll need to use both to defeat the phantoms that roam the land.
But this latest trailer doesn’t focus on the combat, and instead looks at the exploration and investigation gameplay. Developer Rogue Factor is promising no quests and no waypoints, so you’ll need to follow your own instincts to progress.

The idea here is that you have to pay attention to the clues and things people say to move forward. The studio stresses it’s not trying to frustrate – it wants to prove that a well-designed game doesn’t need a complicated UI filled with compasses and map markers to see you through.
Honestly, we reckon this is looking really good – in some scenes it reminds us of Death Stranding, in others Dark Souls, and in others still Fallout. That’s a really interesting and inspiring mix. The game’s due out on 4th September.

8 months away almost and feels like it just got teased yesterday. I haven’t seen enough to judge yet, but I’m growing a little tired of the soulslike formula.
The only problem with games that don't have big compass objective HUDs is that whenever I take a break for a month or so, maybe longer, I've got no idea what I'm doing when I get back.
As long as there's some sort of recall system or heck even in-game notetaking, I'd be fine. But when I boot up FF2 Pixel Remaster after 6 months and have to google an entire playthrough just to figure out where I'm supposed to go, it can get annoying.
I mean this isn't that far off from what the Souls games have done but I do like that they are trying this so I'll absolutely give it a shot. I just wish that there was a demo so I can get a feel for the game.
I'm really interested in this one. It's definitely got my attention.
This has my full attention. Love a new IP. Will be there to support if it turns out great!
Yeah, I ain’t sleeping on this AT ALL!
This was a standout game at the last SOP m. Looks really good
Look forward to play this. Get my attention and interest
Doesn't look like anything too special gameplay-wise, but the art direction is really doing it for me. It almost has a Lynchian feel to it's atmosphere.
It's in my wishlist already. Good price...£49.99 👍
The game got my attention form previous presentations, I'l certainly keep an eye on it.
About the secret mentioned at the end: there are cows in the game as shown at 01:26, and there are also the humanitarian trucks. Depending on the game's mechanics, one of those could solve it.
@IceClimbersMain at one point in the video the character uses an ipad looking thing that has the information he just got from the little girl he was talking to, so it seems it saves the information that you get from NPCs at least.
This looks very impressive. Will definitely play it once we see more gameplay, story elements.
Yeah, this looks very interesting! Beautiful environments as well.
No quests, no waypoints? No thanks.
I've been keeping an eye on this game since it first got revealed.
I like the art style, it reminds me of Death Stranding and Chernobylite. I'm not sure how I feel about it having no quests but it does seem a little Souls'y so that's definitely a plus because most Souls games don't need quests to provide untold hours of gameplay.
This is one of my most anticipated by far.
I'm not sure why this is being branded a souls like when this video alone proves there is far more to the gameplay loop than what is in a typical soulslike. Mind you I love rewarding combat so I'd be interested if it was, but this looks like a great deal more than that.
Hoping it turns out well!
I have zero interest in souls like games at all I dotn get why they can't just have difficulty modes this looks good but unless theyse games bring difficulty modes I'm out that's just me though everyone's different
There’s some intriguing elements to this game and it has piqued my interest. However, although parts of the game look lovely, some of the animations are stilted and rough. The idea of “no HUD, no compass, no map, no menus” sounds good on paper, but will it work in execution, that’s the question. Also, I notice that they expressly wished to avoid open world checklists and menus, and yet the protagonist has a handheld PDA that he pulls up which appears to function just like a menu would. And in this section he finds a handheld map which has a rather obvious pathway marked with red ink in the clear and artificial video game type of way, so is it really all that different? We’ll have to see. Might be smoke and mirrors in the end. Cautiously optimistic.
@IceClimbersMain I feel you! I work at sea, and after one month rotation.... I'm wondering which game did I played last, what the heck was the controls and combinations...and what was I doing.
This looks intriguing, to say the least. Hopefully it's not another one of those games that comes out and disappoints. Also hearing Ella's Toufexis voice again makes me really want a new Deus ex
