A tasty little nugget of news that may have gotten overlooked during all the Nintendo Direct hubbub yesterday, Square Enix has announced and released SaGa Frontier 2 Remastered on PS5 and PS4.
It's priced at $29.99 / £24.99.
Longtime Japanese RPG fans may well be familiar with the original game, which launched for the PS1 all the way back in 1999. Its 2000 release in the west meant that it flew under the radar to some extent, with the PS2 dropping later that year.
Reviews were solid but unspectacular back then, with obvious comparisons to titles like Final Fantasy 7 and 8 having a negative impact. Still, many consider SaGa Frontier 2 to be something of an underappreciated gem — and so this remaster, complete with a bunch of new features, might well be worth a look.

Here's a quick summary of those enhancements, as per the press release:
- Fully Enhanced High-Definition Visuals – The game’s signature warm watercolor-style graphics and are more defined and vibrant, and original character sprites are upscaled for modern resolutions. New sprites have been prepared for characters who did not have unique sprites in the original game.
- Revamped User Interface – History Choice, chronology, a revamped screen layout and a multitude of other gameplay systems have been reconstructed to facilitate more intuitive and comfortable gameplay.
- Brand-New Story Content – Under the supervision of SaGa franchise general director Akitoshi Kawazu, Benny Matsuyama introduces new story events that provide additional insight into the events of SaGa Frontier 2.
- New Gameplay Features – Added elements like Parameter Inheritance, postgame content and New Game+ make for an enhanced and expanded gameplay experience.
- New Minigame for Western Fans – The excavation minigame, created for the Japan-exclusive PocketStation peripheral for the PlayStation, is playable in the west for the first time as “Dig! Dig! Digger” in SaGa Frontier 2 Remastered.

Well Squenix are certainly pushing Saga these days. I don't expect Unlimited Saga to follow very quickly however.
I had this game, I couldn't get very far in it but was impressed by it's graphics for sure. It wasn't very experienced with jrpgs on ps1 and used to action replay my way through a lot of them so maybe I'd fare better now unless it was just a very hard game.
Yes, I cheated on Final Fantasy VII and VIII, but did IX without, although I'm told that game isn't as hard.
This looks great. I'm probably one of the few that's happy they didn't give this the HD 2d treatment lol. I love the artstyle here
the art direction in this game is amazing (beautiful water colour aesthetic). it looks just as nice as legend of mana. however, the game may be off-putting for those who just want a simple turn-based experience due to the convoluted gameplay mechanics and systems at play.
Happy for others but I have never enjoyed the saga series ever it's just not for me
I love RPGs but I didn't like the Saga series
Another day another remaster on ps5. Sony take Sunday off lol
