Update []: As part of its comeback this week, Game Informer has now made over 130 archived issues available for free on its website. All you need to do is sign up for a free account, and you can devour them without restriction.
Obviously, this doesn’t cover the entire history of the magazine, but it would be nice if they could be eventually reproduced in some way.
The publication’s also said it has plans to bring back its printed format, with more information to be announced in the future.
Original Story: Game Informer, the long-running US gaming magazine unceremoniously shut down by retailer GameStop last year, is back.
In one of the most unexpected announcements of the year thus far, Gunzilla Games has announced it’s acquired the publication from its previous owners, and has reassembled the entire original editorial team.
The website has relaunched today, and you can visit it through here. It’s opened with a belated look at the top ten games of 2024, with Astro Bot winning yet another Game of the Year award from a prestigious publication.
While the website is looking lovely, there are also plans to bring back the publication’s iconic print magazine, with an “all-new approach, bigger and better than it ever was before”.
Here’s what Editor-in-Chief Matt Miller has had to say about the relaunch: “Our team was thrilled to hear from the folks at Gunzilla Games about their interest in working with us.
“They share our belief that the legacy of Game Informer is worth preserving. We can’t wait to continue our mission to celebrate games and the people who make and play them.
“We’re extremely grateful to Gunzilla Games for their confidence and trust in bringing back 100% of the team and ensuring our coverage remains entirely editorially selected and created.”
While it’s exciting to learn about the future of Game Informer, one other important facet here is that the magazine’s backlog of historic issues will be archived on the website, available for everyone to read in digital format for free.
There have been very few wins for games media over the past 18 months, but this is finally a story worth celebrating.
Welcome back, Game Informer – it’s good to see you again!

Amazing news!
I am so happy about this! I went and bought every copy of Game Informer my GameStop had the day they announced they shut down. Glad to hear an iconic magazine will live again.
Well this is one piece of glad news I didn't expect to wake up to, congrats!😄
Good news. I'm tracking some old issues but sadly none of my local offline / online book stores has a single copy of them.
Nice to see them back in business. Can't wait for a return of the printed magazine.
Which Issue was everyones first?
I'm very happy to see this. Game Informer was always a highlight for me growing up.
This is great news, and good on gunzilla for finally doing something worthwhile. But let’s not forget they are also a NFT gaming company so they can go ***** themselves for that.
I was crying tears of joy when I first heard this news. I've been a Game Inforer subscriber for over 24 years before they closed down (on my birthday, no less). WELCOME BACK, GAME INFORMER!!
@Areus GI #76 The WWF Attitude issue was my first, and I've been a subscriber since then.
Really cool to see Game Informer make a return
@camsoup1981 I can't remember the issue number but mine was From June of 1998
Nice to see them back and with a butt load of content in order to come out swinging.
@Areus GI #62 The Banjo-Kazooie cover
Reason why I miss E3 because publications like this benefited from it a little, GamesMaster was my games mag of the 00s but 90s was Sega Power and Mean Machines and maybe a Sonic the Comic occasionally for the streets of Rage story lol
I am happy about this news, but it feels like the company that acquired them is not legitimate. Hope I am wrong!
It's good that game informer is back.we need more video games magazines . Word up son
That's lovely!!!
I would like to know when I can buy my magazine copy.
Great to see it come back, revivals keep happening and it's always a shock.
Why didn't they just sell it to a buyer in the first place. We just go oh great that's gone then once it's under enough people buy it/revive it. It's weird.
The best news in a while!
Wow just one of the magazines I used to buy when I was a lot young along with.
C&VG, Mean Machines etc etc.
I love magazines. Still get EDGE every month. There’s something really nice about them NOT being on the 24/7/365 news schedule, they have time to breathe and percolate on thoughts before putting pen to paper. Far less knee jerk reactions and more insightful content. Plus the occasional deep dive scoop.
But I still love daily news online too, I wouldn’t want one OR the other, but why choose, when we can have BOTH, they compliment each other beautifully.
Any bets how long they will survive this time?
Glad they're back, finally some decent alternatives.
@themightyant I haven't thought about Edge in years. Thanks for this, I've just checked there website and there is an offer for the first 3 issues at £1. Snapped that up.
Gunzilla Granzella argh but great news.
@Jey887 Nice. Enjoy.
Thanks for the heads up - I will lose days in that archive!
The only downside is the people who own them have a game coming out based on NFTs and it's not even out or nowhere near out so that's little worrying
