Iconic US Magazine Game Informer Unexpectedly Rises from the Dead 1

Update []: As part of its comeback this week, Game Informer has now made over 130 archived issues available for free on its website. All you need to do is sign up for a free account, and you can devour them without restriction.

Obviously, this doesn’t cover the entire history of the magazine, but it would be nice if they could be eventually reproduced in some way.

The publication’s also said it has plans to bring back its printed format, with more information to be announced in the future.

Original Story: Game Informer, the long-running US gaming magazine unceremoniously shut down by retailer GameStop last year, is back.

In one of the most unexpected announcements of the year thus far, Gunzilla Games has announced it’s acquired the publication from its previous owners, and has reassembled the entire original editorial team.

The website has relaunched today, and you can visit it through here. It’s opened with a belated look at the top ten games of 2024, with Astro Bot winning yet another Game of the Year award from a prestigious publication.

While the website is looking lovely, there are also plans to bring back the publication’s iconic print magazine, with an “all-new approach, bigger and better than it ever was before”.

Here’s what Editor-in-Chief Matt Miller has had to say about the relaunch: “Our team was thrilled to hear from the folks at Gunzilla Games about their interest in working with us.

“They share our belief that the legacy of Game Informer is worth preserving. We can’t wait to continue our mission to celebrate games and the people who make and play them.

“We’re extremely grateful to Gunzilla Games for their confidence and trust in bringing back 100% of the team and ensuring our coverage remains entirely editorially selected and created.”

While it’s exciting to learn about the future of Game Informer, one other important facet here is that the magazine’s backlog of historic issues will be archived on the website, available for everyone to read in digital format for free.

There have been very few wins for games media over the past 18 months, but this is finally a story worth celebrating.

Welcome back, Game Informer – it’s good to see you again!
