PS Productions will work on its first non-Sony intellectual property, as it’s been pulled in to produce a Resident Evil reboot by Barbarian director Zach Cregger.
The film – set to release in theatres on 18th September, 2026 – was being shopped around, with Warner Bros allegedly interested in distributing it. But having released all of the previous Resident Evil movies, Sony is clinging to the rights and hoping for a hit here.
Cregger has co-written the screenplay with Shay Hatten, and while details remain under wraps, it’s said this movie will go back to the roots of the Capcom franchise.
“I’ve been a rabid fan of these games for decades, and to be able to bring this amazing title to life is a true honour,” the Barbarian maker told Deadline.
Sony Pictures’ Sanford Panitch added: “Zach is one of the most talented exciting new directors to come on the scene in many years. His brilliant approach in restarting and refreshing this legendary Sony franchise instantly makes this one of our most important releases in 2026.”
And writing on X (or Twitter), PS Productions bigwig Asad Qizilbash said: “Excited for PS Productions to help produce such a beloved and iconic franchise.”
Cregger is considered a bit of a star right now, with his 2022 movie Barbarian attracting a 92% aggregated rating on Rotten Tomatoes. His next movie, Weapons, is due out on 16th January, 2026, making next year a big year for the director if Resident Evil also hits its target date.

Barbarian was excellent so here's hoping for something good.
3rd time's the charm, right? Welcome to racoon city appeared to go in the right direction at first with it's carpenter style and then went so far from the goalpost that it felt like an act of self sabotage.
Sony movies have a very spotty track record, but I did enjoy Gran Turismo.
I wasn't a fan of Barbarian overall, but its first third showed me Cregger can do suspenseful horror. Hopefully, this time they rely way more on practical effects and makeup instead of shoddy CGI.
My main worry is Hatten's involvement, who is a very hit-or-miss writer, in my opinion.
So it's another reboot which i hope they stick with the source material. And there's hope it will be good because Barbarian was a very solid horror movie.
Hopefully he has creative freedom. Reminds me of Edgar Wright fighting for an Ant-Man movie then getting booted off it. (Although it did turn out decent). Here's hoping for something special. Justin Long would be icing on the cake
No way! I'm actually super stoked for this. Zach Cregger is amazing going all the way back to his WKUK days. I can't believe I'm actually hyped for a Resident Evil movie but they somehow found a way.
@tameshiyaku yeah I liked raccoon city, at least it felt like Resi…
A good director on a RE movie?
We might finally get a proper adaptation.
Really high hopes for this one!
Fingers crossed it's actually good decent this time round, rather than looking like a joke
@RBMango Agreed. Barbarian was good for the first 30 mins, bit then turned to the ususal trite clichés and 'monster' route...
Not so optimistic about this one.
Oh god not another RE movie, have mercy on my soul.
Barbarian is one of my favourite horrors of the last few years, so I'm hoping he can be the first to make a genuinely good film of the game, that both gamers and non-gamers can enjoy
I'll believe they can get a Resident Evil movie right when I see it happen.
Barbarian was a brilliant and really disturbing movie. I hope this is as good as that and if it is we are all in for a treat...if that's the right word 😱
@Dodoo tbh, I liked it too, but I do get why people got mad about Leon and a few other things. I did like the style and pacing however.
Don't f**k it up this time please 😮💨
This time pick a game and stick with it, all these RE films like cramming multiple games into one film 👍🏻
God this is truly pathetic, because they stole the story from a game, made 6 films from it, an animation series in fact a few I think? Plus another 1 or 2 films, it’s just flogging that dead horse to try and make cash of its brand name. Just like Jurassic Park.. Heaven forbid Hollywood EVER comes up with something original.
Now this is a director I can trust to stick the landing. Just focus on the RE1 plot & the haunted mansion setting, that's all you need for nice horror movie adaptation.
Anderson derailed the atmosphere by focusing on the underground lab, while Racoon City got bogged down trying to do both RE1 and RE2 in 1 movie.
@RBMango I kinda liked but also didn't. I think at the time I just didn't really like the idea of comedy in horror but then I watched Evil Dead Rising and enjoyed that a lot.
@S1ayeR74 They made enough original movies. But the reality is people including the ones who keeps yapping about "booo! Hollywood never make something original", they didn't watch those movies. Look at Francis Ford Coppola Megalopolis for example. It's an original movie not from video game, superheroes, novel / comic, or remake but it's a box office flop.
So when a lot of these original movies didn't do well in the box office, what do you expect the studios & film makers gonna do? They go back to making movies that will sells.
Now. If you really really care about "original movies", you either make that movie by yourself and show Hollywood how's it done OR support the ones that came out at your movie theatre, walk the walk and not just talk the talk.
I myself personally don't care if the movie is original or not. I just want to watch a good movie.
Huge WKUK fan. Go Cregger!
Do more of the CGI films, they feel a lot more like RE than the live action ones.
Raccoon city was above average imo
A reboot might get me interested. While I love the gaming series, the movies it has spawned have been absolutely awful. I've watched maybe two of them and they are cheap looking, disjointed, disconnected messes. A reboot, if done in the vein of The Last of Us TV series, in the way it reflects and expands the gaming series, might be a success. Otherwise, I'll pass once again.
@Frmknst These days Hollywood crap is exactly that, crap, usually made for the ‘modern audience’ too. I prefer films from the 80’s or 90’s personally. Games these days can be MUCH better.
Disney haven’t made anything decent in years for instance. But they disbanded the studio that made Split Second.
@S1ayeR74 I thought They made quite some money of it. If it was a bust then they would not go for it again.
The problem with videogame adaptations is that you cant please anyone almost people will always complain. I liked the first movie the second was ok. I watched one with my dad he liked it that was part 3 or 4 i cant remember. The movies where mostly terrible for me but i had some fun too.

Hollywood makes plenty of new original films, but the problem is the masses don’t go and watch them, they keep returning to IP they know. That means these new films are usually lower budget and don’t have the same massive marketing spend so people like you don’t even know about them, and claim they don’t exist. But If you are willing to look there’s a lot of great original films.
So the problem is less Hollywood and more the movie going public. Sadly IP sells, sequels sell, even if they are not very good like Resident Evil, Transformers, Fast & Furious, Jurassic Park, etc etc. all $5+ billion dollar franchises.
It’s the same problem with games, all the same IP are taking most of the money leaving everyone else fighting over relative scraps.
