Ubisoft has effectively pulled the plug on a yet-to-be-announced Far Cry project — a multiplayer extraction shooter that's apparently been "rebooted" following an internal review.
This leak comes via the ever-reliable Insider Gaming, and suggests that, once again, Ubisoft is really struggling to align its business at present.
We first heard about this unorthodox Far Cry title back in 2023. At the time, Insider Gaming reported that 'Project Maverick' was in development alongside a more traditional Far Cry sequel — widely believed to be Far Cry 7.
As you might expect, the leak didn't go down well with a lot of Far Cry fans. Given how often we see live service efforts stumble and fail to recover, many labelled this extraction shooter as a waste of resources — even though no one had actually seen the game in action.
Still, it's starting to sound like Ubisoft didn't think much of the project either. Supposedly, Maverick's "dedicated tech team" was moved over to Far Cry 7 at the end of last year, signalling the project's demise. Now, the plan is to take Maverick back to the prototyping stage while Far Cry 7 soldiers on.
Indeed, it seems as though all of this ties back into Ubisoft's current goal of streamlining production. The publisher's quite clearly refocusing on its heavy hitters — like Assassin's Creed Shadows — while it trims the fat off its wider portfolio. But of course, this means that Shadows and the eventual Far Cry 7 have to strike a chord.

“Far crying” got me. It sucks because the Far Cry games I think COULD be truly excellent. They look awesome, I think generally the gunplay is great, but the actual story and gameplay portions are just terribly average (or below).
The only "extraction" i see is the piss with all these free or paid multiplayer shooters.
Make a great singleplayer farcry game with a fun multiplayer tacked on, like the olden days. Watch the money roll in.
By the time anyone releases a game based on a trend(br, hero shooters, extraction), the trend has usually passed or has its established games. Look at sony's late to the party gaas debacle.
Ubisoft, please consider a Far Cry 2 remake, fix up some of the glaring issues (the constant malaria and checkpoints being reset after you clear them) and you'll start clawing back some of the goodwill you've lost this past decade or so.
@N1ghtW1ng Thought I was the only one who actually liked Far Cry 2, I would be all for a remake!
Every Far Cry since 3 has just been a steady progression of the same game for SEVEN games. That's pretty boring and new ideas are needed. However Ubisoft are in such a hole they probably need safe bets right now or studios will close.
@Oram77 @N1ghtW1ng I liked it too, though I played a bit recently and it's aged pretty poorly imo. I still liked the fire spreading and other aspects.
I ejnoyed Far Cry primal, 5 and its sequel. I might be one of the few who actually like ubisoft-style open worlds. But all was SP, not really interested into MP-only farcry.
I wouldn't mind a shake-up to the formula, but I don't think an extraction shooter is it. My favorite in the series is Far Cry 4, but following that up with Primal I thought was a really cool idea. Would anyone else like them to try visiting other time periods to shake things up? Like maybe either a futuristic Far Cry or one set in the early 1900s?
I just finished New Dawn last night funnily enough. Primal’s probably my favourite one but they’ve all been at least good fun, although I’ve not heard great things about 6. It’s an odd one, the individual stories scattered around the maps following certain characters are leaps and bounds ahead of even first party games, some really great stuff being done there, but the main stories often feel a bit formulaic. I really like the more experimental take that the DLCs go for and so I’d be up for something like that. Just not an extraction shooter!
Far cry extraction shooter?! 🤣 these people just jump on any bandwagon don’t they. Wouldn’t be so bad but they are usually 5-7 years too late.
@nessisonett I really don't understand the hate for FC 6. I really liked it. You have a pet alligator that attacks people, Giancarlo Esposito doing his best Gus Fring, a mission where you make tacos with Danny Trejo, and a Stranger Things mission. I thought it was really solid.
@Steeleye50 I didn't much care for FC6, personally. I didn't click with the leveling systems/gun mods and the questing felt pretty weird to me, especially how when you spoke to quest-givers, it brought you to a static screen with the NPC talking to you - felt pretty immersion breaking. I know all Far Crys are pretty outlandish, but this one felt much less grounded than previous entries. Nothing was terrible, but I just never felt compelled to come back to it and probably only put 15 hours into it, where I had platinumed several other ones.
@N1ghtW1ng FC2 was amazing, arguably the best in the series, that's a great suggestion.
@Frmknst Hunt: Showdown is really fun, but definitely has the "I'm a PC game on console" feel to it.
CoD has one too associated with Warzone called DMZ, but I don't think it really took off. It's fun enough for a while, though.
I dont think many care for Far Cry anymore. It’s had its day surely
@wildcat_kickz sounds like you were having the same problem with that one that I am now having - the Ubisoft "formula" has worn really, really thin.
@N1ghtW1ng
Your Rusty Guns that go from pwewpwew to rkssjjj was worse.
@Steeleye50 Yeah, potentially. I had the same problem with New Dawn. I'm still looking forward to AC Shadows, though. No digs at anyone who enjoyed FC6, though - it's all a matter of taste.
MAN! Ubisoft just can't seem to right the ship.
I guess I will say it, since no one at Ubisoft will
ICEBERG! DEAD AHEAD!
@dardel I am one too
@wildcat_kickz Blood Dragon, it was fun but lacked any substance.
@Pondo320 I loved Blood Dragon, but yeah it wasn't really meant to be a full release. I'm pretty sure it was only about like 10-15 hours, if you wanted to 100% it.
@N1ghtW1ng amen. I’ll even take the jamming guns. Nothing beats the African drums soundtrack of that game.
If they did remake Far Cry 2 I'd hope they'd include the map editor. People did great things with those tools and maps.
@themightyant
Well, there have only been three games since Far Cry 3, so how can there be SEVEN games the same?
@ecurb7 three numbered games since Far Cry 3. But some titles acted as standalone DLC such as Blood Dragon, New Dawn, Primal.
@jberg
That's still only six. And to be fair, Blood Dragon and Primal are somewhat different to the mainline entries.
@ecurb7 Yeah, I was just stating there were more than 3
Why they don’t resurrect the gameplay from 2, I’ll never understand. I think we’ve run out of ideas for tropical islands.
@thechetearly I found three even ok even with some fantastic characters.
@jberg @ecurb7 I could have been clearer but what I said was we’ve had a steady progression of the same game for 7 games. Far Cry needs new ideas imo, not just an added systems but a complete rethink.
1. Far Cry 3
2. Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon. Which is a standalone game not DLC
3. Far Cry 4
4. Far Cry Primal
5. Far Cry 5
6. Far Cry New Dawn
7. Far Cry 6

Visually and in terms of the weapons they give you yes. But the formula and game mechanics are all basically the same. It’s the same core gameplay, wrapped up in different paper.
And I LOVE Blood Dragon not just the 80s retro VHS futurism and tongue in cheek hammy script, but because it’s a smaller game with far less busywork. It’s a much tighter experience. Rather than having 30+ outposts, I think there’s 13 if memory serves. It’s the same with all the other cut and paste busywork there’s around a third of it, making it a much less likely to feel tired. Less is more.
@themightyant
Ok, ok, I was being pernickety!
Still, I'm one of those people who quite likes the Ubisoft formula (Far Cry and Assassin's Creed). I don't want all games to be like this, but they are the gaming equivalent of fast food - a quick sugar rush from completing each activity on the map etc. isn't always a bad thing. They're usually very slick and with solid mechanics, and nothing too challenging or complicated ... in between more demanding games, I don't think there's anything wrong with that.
@ecurb7 I like the fast food analogy, and I definitely consumed a lot of it, too much in fact (possibly every Ubi game from AC1 - Far Cry 5). But I think that's why I can't stomach any more of it. Not everyone will feel as sick of it as me.
