Gears of War is almost certainly set to make its PS5 debut this year, with multiple rumourmongers claiming some kind of remastered trilogy will be announced for Sony’s system this summer.
However, there could be a catch: it may be missing competitive multiplayer.
Writing on X (or Twitter), a snoopster named DetectiveSeeds claimed the rumoured collection has already been loaded onto the PS Store with a mid-August release date. The sneak said it’ll be PS5 Pro enhanced but will have no PvP multiplayer modes.
Unable to verify the source, we initially shrugged this story off, but connected Windows Central scribe Jez Corden has since added fuel to the fire, saying he has also heard there’ll be no multiplayer.
In some ways this does make some sense. The original three Gears of War games all had their own unique multiplayer modes, and it wouldn’t make sense to repackage them all in the same compilation. We suppose the trilogy’s maps and modes could all be condensed into a single unified suite, but that may lack the authenticity some fans are craving from a bundle like this.
If you remember, Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection also lacked multiplayer, as did The Last of Us: Part 1.
It’s also worth noting there’s no word of campaign co-op here, so it’s probable that will be included. There’s been word in the past that the trilogy will feature crossplay, so clearly some form of online connectivity is planned.
It’s a potential shame, though, that PS5 players may need to wait until new game Gears of War: E-Day to get their first taste of the franchise’s popular competitive multiplayer.

Personally I don't think the lack of pvp would be an issue, however they must have the campaign co-op option available. Easily one of my best gaming experiences was playing the original trilogy through with friends.
Isn't it almost always the case to skip pvp online (and servers for this) when remastering old titles? And in this case the titles is beeing remastered for PS from MS, not surprising at all.
Makes sense to me. MP benefits from the audience being concentrated to one game and not split over several competing ones. And this Gears MP should probably be E-Day, despite its release in 2026 (presumably).

To be expected; Uncharted Collection didn't include the multiplayer modes for example. I know the multiplayer was a huge element of Gears but I'm happy just to play the campaigns!
If Naughty Dog get a pass for not including the multiplayer in their remasters then MS get one too.
Fine by me, as long as the campaign co-op still works.
It makes sense, whenever games on PS are repackaged, the PvP is obsolete, those modes were also really a time and place type of thing. EDay will likely have a modern and robust competitive mode available.
I’m sure this will be added and maybe they just want to allow people to play the campgain and enjoy the story first.

A shame, Gears 3 was great fun to play back in the day with the best horde and beast mode (forget escape, bring it back damn it!) , but expected.
I want Halo 5 and Infinite on PS5. I know most people don't like them but they're the only Halo games I haven't played since I stopped with Xbox after the 360.

Never played a Gears game, but I will be buy the trilogy and won't care if it doesn't have MP attached to it.
PvP missing isn’t a big deal for me, but the lack of co-op would be very disappointing. Can’t imagine churning through three of these games by myself these days.
Fine by me. I love Gears of War but loathe the MP so this shouldn't be a problem for me. In fact it might make the trophy list more reasonable as a result. Those seriously achievements suck.
it would be a bad omission there's way more to gears of war than just the campaign

4 player horde mode is excellent
and pvp
and other various modes beast mode, escape etc
It's not a problem, it's a bonus. It gives hope trophy list (if any) won't be plagued by multiplayer trophies.
No horde mode and no point in buying for me, that's where the longevity lies

Personally only care about campaign and co-op campaign, but I know a lot of people like PvP and horde multi-player modes.
No co op included for the campaign or horde mode won’t be a very good move by them at all

That's brilliant news if multiplayer is not involved. Means I'll be able to go for the Platinum trophies with no stress or boosting. Love these remasters that drop the MP aspect.

Just give me ALL campaign related trophies and I'm happy. Already did the pvp achievements on XSX so ABSOLUTELY NO NEED for them on PS5 unless a separate game
Man I hated how the Uncharted collection didn't have multiplayer either. This would be immensely disappointing for me. Gears multiplayer is great and I for sure would have jumped in for more than a few rounds.
It's already annoying enough that I gotta keep the PS4 version of Uncharted Lost Legacy installed just so I can have access to U4 multiplayer.
This would be a bummer indeed. Not a deal breaker necessarily but definitely would be unfortunate.
How about delaying it and releasing the full package. I'm not in a hurry. I think it should include the multiplayer, since the naughty dog examples given in here didn't have a MP as popular as gears did. It's like delivering the halo master collection without MP.
For me personally however couch coop is a non negotiable must have.

the MCC has MP across all 4 games & all their co-op modes so there’s no excuse at all for gears of war not to have it. it’s bull**** if they don’t include it and i’ll be pissed

I'm not even a big multiplayer gamer and prefer my single player games but I played Gears Of War 1 and 2 back in the day and it's probably the first time I can say the multiplayer was more fun than playing it single player,a real shame if the rumours are true.
Any competitive multiplayer mode removed from a single player game is music to my ears, I don't mind co-op, à la Borderlands, but any other multiplayer mode just isn't of any interest to me.
@tameshiyaku @trev666 @Dimey @Wazeddie22 @nomither6, as someone with over 2200 hours in Gears 5 multiplayer. I was a little taken back by this but then i read a great idea and wanted to share. Maybe they will turn Gears collection into a hub like COD or Halo. So the campaigns drop in 2025, then E-day drops in it with online multiplayer and they continue to add Horde and older maps into the multiplayer. This would be a really great way to bring gamers back into gears of war hub as it would be constantly expanding over time with modes, maps. Gears of war and Red Dead are my favorite Ip’s in gaming so i will continue to follow every rumor on them i can. In fact a few sites for Gears already said this a few months ago and i didn’t take it to serious but it’s now gaining more traction. The other rumor is there could be a slide mechanic in E-day and multiplayer so maybe they are trying to find ways to bring the slide to the older maps? Time will tell, sorry for the long reply, but again i am as passionate about Gears of War as i am the entire gaming industry. I am happy to see it coming to more platforms to expand it’s reach. I expect it to do well on PS5. But it will really do big numbers being on PC. 😀
I don't mind, I just want the story campaigns and I will be happy.

Gears 3 was some of the only multiplayer content that I ever played so it's a bit of a shame. But so long as some form of Gears MP lands on PlayStation eventually, I'll probably give it another go.

I don't play gears of war multiplayer modes but isn't one of the best thing in this games is the multiplayer mode? What are they (microsoft) thinking?
@Ultimapunch bHonestly I really liked Halo 5 and Infinite. Story in 5 is weak, but the campaign is fun at least, and MP was fantastic.
Infinite in better in both SP and MP, but it's clear the second half of it's campaign was cut, which is a bit of a bummer.
@Cry_Zero the people in this comment section saying "It's fine" have never experienced the multiplayer modes of these games. The game is broken with that OP shotgun, but extremely fun once you get the hang of it.
And they're going to charge $70 for half of the game's original content.
@TimelessJubilee why are they broken ? The original gears is one of the best mp games ever made , if it doesn't include that i won't be buying it ,as the campaign is short

I played my fair share of Gear's MP modes back in the day so I'm ok without it. Getting shotgun killed from half way across the map still doesn't sound like fun even today. As long as you can co-op the campaign, I'm good.
This is a massive problem in my opinion, but I don't think it will affect sales or reception... I just would really enjoy jumping into Gears 2 & 3 multiplayer again with other people also "new" or returning to the series (we are rusty). If you go play new gears multiplayer now everyone playing are absolute demons, phenoms
Having played the original 3, the pvp would have been the only thing I would be interested in revisiting here. Guess I can skip these if its true.
@HonestHick i don’t know man, i think not including the mp on day one is a big missed opportunity. the number of players and their retention is never as big as the first impression; first impression is everything - look what happened with the MCC. It’s a great game, but never gained back the amount of traction it could’ve had if it weren’t for the bugs.
If they release MP and co-op in bits & pieces with gears, i doubt as many players would return.
@nomither6 thats a good point and certainly a possibility. We all know it’s all about catching everyone on PS and PC up in story for E-day. E-day is the big game they want to see hold players. But your point is well taken and i can’t wait for all of it. Cause i am a Super GOW fan.
Uncharted 2 multiplayer was S tier for me. Played that so much. Back in the good ole free PSN days.
@breakneck The multiplayer literally was the longevity for these games. The campaign wasn’t the reason it was one of the most played games on live.
