It’s a little weird to think of Sony and Nintendo collaborating, as the pair have largely been at loggerheads ever since the Super Mario maker infamously stabbed the electronics manufacturer in the back.
Nevertheless, the pair will join forces on a live-action adaptation of The Legend of Zelda, which is slated to release on 26th March, 2027.
Nintendo confirmed the news moments ago using its proprietary Nintendo Today app, perhaps providing a brief glimpse at how it intends to communicate moving forwards. We’re already pouring one out to our friends at Nintendo Life who will now need to check that several times every day.
The movie is being made by Sony Pictures Entertainment, with industry icon Shigeru Miyamoto and Hollywood veteran Avi Arad producing. Wes Ball is on deck to direct, and he’s spoken about how he wants to “ground” the franchise with this film.
Honestly, we’re not sure a live-action adaptation of The Legend of Zelda has the same potential as its recent animated Super Mario movie, but Nintendo does appear to be taking this stuff seriously, so there’s reason to be optimistic we suppose.

Live action Zelda just seems so weird to me and Avi Arad doesn't exactly have a stellar film record.
I expect something super weird like having Mark Wahlberg being cast as Ganon or something...
Producers of this film are the ones from Madame Web, Kraven, Venom and pretty much every crappy Sony Pictures production that has existed.
Still baffled why Nintendo went with them…
Should've gave Hollywood Metroid. Would MUCH rather be getting an anime Zelda movie.
Though hopefully this collaboration will lead to Sony Pictures Animation getting some Nintendo IP. Still hoping to see a Star Fox movie sooner rather than later.
Will look forward to this while also being slightly nervous…
I can't think of an iconic video game character that's less suited to star in a movie adaptation. Link is you the player. He's a vessel and has no real traits other than your own. That's why you could change his name.
I'm keeping a really cautious eye on this. I have a feeling it's going to be really meh but I may be proved wrong.
Live action... not animated like Super Mario Bros??? Excuse me, princess!
Gritty fantasy Zelda sounds like the sort of complete car-crash I’m 100% down for. But it could surprise us.
I hate to be pessimistic but I just can't see how live action Zelda is going to avoid coming across as cheesy and camp.
I'll still watch it of course. But really, the appeal of Zelda has always been the gameplay and the exploration, not the narrative.
Sony? Producing a film about their biggest rival's flagship title? Well excuuuuuuse me! (IYKYK)
@themightyant Damn. Thought I was the first one to make this joke. Now I feel like a poser lol.
@AhmadSumadi Great minds think alike.
@themightyant and we're both probably old AF to know what that's from 😆.
At first my brain read Live Service, and i was like what the…
@AhmadSumadi @themightyant they have to put that line in, they have to. I tried to rewatch the series with my kids. They didn't like the style at all. Cartoons really changed from when we were kids.
Link will be voiced by Jason Statham
Princess Zelda will be played by Zendaya
Ganon will be played by The Rock
This movie will blow
Struggling to think how this would work as a live action movie, It's going to be like Dragon Ball Evolutions ain't it.......
Talk about weird.as it's gets.a Zelda movie made by sony.word up son
Not a fans of Zelda so I don't have any expectation for this movie.
But. I'm curious with the re-reboot of RE movie.
@IOI People said the same thing about Nintendo picking Illumination and I believe Super Mario Bros. Movie was like the studios biggest hit.
The thing is…Nintendo is very, very controlling of how its IP portrayed (especially after the disaster/genius of the original Super Mario Bros. Movie). So, despite the studio…Nintendo’s quality control is all over it.
I am sure if there was any point in the process that didn’t resonate with test audiences, it would get the plug pulled by Nintendo.
The Legend of Zelda is my absolute favorite IP from Nintendo, so I am really hoping this turns out great.
Why not just do something like The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim. So rare to see a mature animated feature film get such a wide release.
I'm sure more people will show up for Zelda if promoted well enough.
I'm fine with a Zelda movie over all. But why does it have to be Sony Pictures? And why isn't it CG? I would love for it be hand drawn animation or anime, but that may not be as marketable to western audiences.
Street fighter 2
I'd love to be proven wrong, but that film will be an abysmal diarrhea. I don't see whey anyone would approve a live action Zelda, especially not Miyamoto. There were so many better choices amongst anime studios. I'd even take the awful studio Visual Flight which murdered Ex-Arm over a live action film.
Sony making a Zelda movie is the oddest thing I have ever read. This year at least.
@tameshiyaku because Nintendo is always looking for mass appeal and that almost always excludes making interesting choices.
It's one of those things that I hope is good enough that my kids enjoy it. I'm not super worried about the integrity of LoZ.
@WolfyTn more like Nostradowner...
@Nei yes and no. Nobody likes alarm clocks and yet they made one 😂
