Nightdive Studios has confirmed its 25th anniversary remaster of System Shock 2, which is widely considered to be one of the greatest games ever made, will release for PS5 and PS4 this summer on 26th June 2025. Rather than a complete remake like the first game received, this is a remaster that'll run at up to 120 frames-per-second.
You can catch the reveal trailer above, and here's a series of screenshots showing off the enhanced graphics:
Specialists at Nightdive Studios have been working on the project for six years now, and it's taken them so long to get the remaster out because they did not have access to the complete source code. To combat this, the team had to do some "extensive reverse engineering", and developer Alex Lima added the studio depended "extensively on debugging and breakpoints to understand" the dated codebase. The original engine was also only designed for PC, which made it harder to port to consoles.
"While the game remains a classic, the code and graphics needed a considerable overhaul," explained VP of business development Larry Kuperman. "The Dark Engine, developed by Looking Glass Studios for System Shock 2 and the Thief games, provided features way ahead of its time, which is one reason these games remain classics, but which also made the game challenging to work with."

When the remaster arrives on PS5 and PS4, it'll sport controller support, "enhanced characters, weapon models and animations", quality of life improvements, including major ones to inventory item usage, and 50 Trophies to unlock.

Seminal game. I have to be honest though, was expecting a bit more for the remaster.
Nice… I love me some immersive sims. I picked up the original’s remaster at release and have been hoping they’d remaster the sequel too!
Was a stunner at the time, was the game that pioneered the whole picking up audio logs thing I think, and it did it really well.
That's been copied by tons of games since of course, so I'm not sure it'll have the same impact nowadays.
The story is still unique though, is your enemy really an enemy if you are both fighting another one?
Oh no. I’ll be knee deep in finding out why we shouldn’t have connected. Sorry SS2, I’ve got a beach to be on with Sam Bridges.
This ☝🏼
Would have preferred a remake tbh, but definitely worth a play through
@Athrum
Nightdives whole thing is taking old classic/cult classic games and trying to update them to make them much more accessible both technological and control wise. Typically that means better resolution, improved controls, sometimes extra content if available, runs well on modern hardware when prior to this it would have been a nightmare to run on modern PC's, etc. How much more do you need?
@PegasusActual93 Was expecting more moder looks, a full on remake. Still it's pretty great to have this updated.
This looks great but I’ll be delivering packages around this time so this can wait.
Remaster no thanks needs a remake then again a great game is a great game
