Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter looks like a ridiculously cool remake based on everything we've seen of it so far — but some fans have long wondered whether the game will simply reuse the old localisation from when Trails in the Sky was originally brought overseas by publisher Xseed Games.
As it turns out, 1st Chapter will feature a newly localised script, as per the official pre-order information from remake publisher GungHo Online Entertainment.
The thing is, the old game's English script has, at times, been accused of being an inaccurate representation of the original Japanese writing. It's not what we'd call a popular complaint — we happen to think the Sky games have a largely charming localisation — but it'll be interesting to see how this reworked script compares.
Indeed, GungHo specifically states: "Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter features a new localization, ensuring an authentic and engaging experience that honors the original Japanese text."
And just to clarify, 1st Chapter will boast English, German, French, and Spanish localisations, alongside optional Japanese voicework. The remake's still set for a PS5 launch this autumn / fall.

I played the original on PSP and just could not get into it/didn't grab me. I finished it, and then promptly sold it - which sucks, because the series has the hallmarks of everything I should love in a JRPG.
Despite knowing all that, I'm so tempted to try this again, but know I really shouldn't/don't have the time to get back into yet another JRPG haha
@Avol Sky 1 and 2 are the only games in the series that I liked past the 10 hour mark. I forced myself to finish Cold Steel 1 and 2, but I was so fed up with the franchise not growing up with time. At some point the bad guys should stop smirking to themselves and actually start killing people. Enough is enough.
@heavyartillery56 Falcom Has been Drinking the shounen Kool aid they don't have it in them to start killing off main characters the last Legend of Heroes Title where the bad guy killed off a main characters was the Original PC98 version of a Tear of Vermillion the story was so dark that when they remaded it a few years later the story was toned down though I would say Daybreak 2 comes somewhat close
We have come a long way from waiting for fan translations mods on the PSP
Oh dear. New scripts these days are very rarely a positive sign of improvement.
Does this mean we won't be getting the empty chest messages (which were a complete invention of XSeed's localisation team)?

@Damage99 Who? Is that character a main one? 🤔
Every time I hear this it ends up making the script more dry and devoid of life.
Disappointing, the OG translation was about as good as it gets imo. Literally never heard anyone complain about it before, but I suppose there's someone out there who will always be unsatisfied.
@dancingstar93 god I hope not those messages were fun I really hope they return 🙏
such a great JRPG series, deff one of the best cant wait for it

@dancingstar93 yeah, that’s my fear too. I don’t see how it happens. I’m hoping that, like FF7 Remake, this brings more people in. But I am going to always want the OG.
I'm sure someone is swearing off the game now. For my own part, it's one of the few games that made me laugh out loud, in a good way.
@Damage99 Right. But this comment is really refreshing.
I used to refer to Trails of Cold Steel as ToCS for short, until I saw the acronym for Trails in the Sky.
@Damage99 It wasn't the localizers who made him trans. It was Kondo's decision, and it's in the original Japanese.
As far as Nadia saying, "Rizz" and all the other weird modern slang in the script, you certainly have a point.

@dancingstar93 Chest messages were the result of a quirk in the original game's code where every chest had a distinct copy of the same Japanese message. So it's unlikely the Falcom would do it on purpose for the remake. Honestly I liked the Xseed localizations.
@Avol Same. Sequel is better, at least, and better paced than the original is.
The gameplay in this looks so improved, though. Maybe it'll carry me through 40 hours of nothing happening.
@stoogl Interesting. I didn't know that. Reminds me in a way of the localised Yakuza "remasters" where after fights you would receive a <random adjective> <item or amount of money>, e.g. "a slightly battered 500 yen" because it was not much harder, and funnier, than coding to use the correct English article ("a" / "an" or none at all) for the item.
My only issue is that they don't change terms that exist in later games.
