For months now, persistent rumours have claimed the Halo series shall be making its way to PS5 alongside many other Xbox games like Senua's Saga: Hellblade 2, Gears of War, and Microsoft Flight Simulator. The original suggestion was Microsoft plans to port Halo: The Master Chief Collection in full to PS5, but this claim has now been disputed a little.
Speaking on The Xbox Two podcast, The Verge journalist Tom Warren suggests what Microsoft is currently planning to do with Halo on other platforms is to release an incomplete collection. Warren explains he doesn't think "it'll have every game", and that's all he can share for now, suggesting he knows more.
Halo: The Master Chief Collection contains the following games:
Upon its original Xbox One launch, the collection only contained the first four mainline games, and Halo 3: ODST and Halo Reach were added in post-launch updates. The FPS bundle suffered from significant issues at release — mostly relating to the multiplayer modes — but has been fixed in the years since.
When the collection came to PC, the titles were drip-fed over 11 months, from December 2019 to November 2020. It is possible Microsoft is aiming for a similar rollout on PS5 and Nintendo Switch 2, slowly releasing the back catalogue of Halo titles instead of dropping them all on a single day.
Halo 5: Guardians and Halo Infinite have also released since The Master Chief Collection hit the market, but they aren't part of the bundle. A remake of Halo: Combat Evolved has also been rumoured, with wider speculation pointing towards a remake of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion arriving as soon as this month. Microsoft already has Forza Horizon 5 and Indiana Jones and the Great Circle slated for a PS5 launch in the coming weeks.
Would you prefer the Halo games to come to PS5 in a gradual rollout or all at once? Let us know your preference in the comments below.

I'll be satisfied if I can play Halo Reach again. One of my first games upon getting an Xbox 360 when I was young and it was so damn good
If that's the case, this could potentially be a smart decision. Putting out a small collection of Halo titles for PlayStation users to get a taste of, and if they like it, maybe they'll buy an Xbox (or PC) to play Halo!
Will it actually work? Hell no! Or at least probably not, but it's not a bad idea, I just doubt that most people will be willing to switch platforms, or buy a Xbox alongside their PlayStation, just to play Halo.
Then again, some people buy Nintendo consoles just for Mario Kart, so what the hell am I talking about?
Just give me the original trilogy. I didn't think Reach was very good and 4 was a game I unfortunately finished.
I own all 3 consoles so this don’t effect me as i have played every Halo game. But if this is true i don’t like it all that much for PS only players. I love the idea of less exclusives in the industry. It’s good for the players and really good financially for the dev teams. I want all players regardless of what box or PC they want to play on to have full access. This seems a little half baked if i am understanding it correctly. There was a rumor that Gears 1 ultimate edition would be coming to PS5, i thought that to be odd cause if the collection of all 3 is coming then why not just bring that out to PC, Xbox and PS5. Well maybe this is why, PS gamers get the first game only? I don’t know, i am more in favor of the Xbox and PC approach of games on all devices, but this isn’t what i would want to see for PS only gamers and those great franchises. Again it don’t effect me directly as i love Xbox and have all those games already. But i am always trying to think of the gamer and not the silly flame wars over what box people prefer to use. We all have our reasons for what we like to play on.
Feels like Microsoft are leaving a lot of money on the table by doing the collection that way, because ain't am I going to buy an Xbox to play the other games.
I could see them releasing each game individually, or split the collection into 2 mini collections.
Not an issue for me personally as own the collection on Steam and Xbox, but I can see Microsoft really milking the novelty of Halo on PS.
Don’t be surprised if it’s a Halo 1-3 collection for £70 and a ODST x Reach combo pack for £50.
In comparison, I got the entire collection with Halo 4 (the ugly duckling) too for £8.49.
So just be wary and as hard as it may be, wait for a sale, so you’re not getting robbed in broad daylight.
@HonestHick "We all have our reasons for what we like to play on."
If Xbox actually had exclusives to offer I would actually buy their system but unfortunately their gameplan to release their games on everything which kills any reason for me to buy it and stay on Playstation.
Halo 1 was cool for its time but aged badly and is extremely repetitive. Halo 2 is great. Halo 3 is average but people liked online. 4 is trash and the side games are just that. So i wouldn't be bothered by whatever they sell. Halo 1 deserves a solid remake that expands the levels to make them more unique.
I’m all over Halo however it comes to PlayStation but I’d prefer it in a ‘drip-feed’ as opposed to all at once so as to not be tempted to just rush through them.
Slow and steady wins the race, so i’d lean to gradual rollout. Probably smarter for MS as not to create instant IP fatigue, but yeah im just guessing here. Everything all at once might also work. Anyway, not the most groundbreaking insight, but there you go 🙃
Microsoft would make way more money releasing the games individually so that's what I expect they will do tbh.
I would far farther they gave us the latest one - whatever that was called. But then who am I kidding - I would probably buy any of it to relive the games which meant so much to gaming in my teenage years as well as just for the long-awaited novelty of halo being on PlayStation
doesn’t matter how it comes(as long as it’s not infinite, 4, or 5👎); halo on ps is already a big deal enough. i’d be happy that halo is on ps either way - bigger playerbase for me to stomp on pc.
@DETfaninATL then just don’t rush through them? lol
What proof do we actually have that this guy is telling the truth ?
@JohntheRaptor nothing to say about halo reach huh? one of the best halos
That's suck, I want Halo Bungie Collection, not 343 halo. I hope this is false and microsoft will release Halo Master Chief Collection on ps5.
I'm guessing there's no hope for ever playing Dead Rising then.
Not hugely interested in the Halo games, but either MS is serious and genuine about releasing all their games on PS or they are not!
Removed - trolling/baiting
@Nepp67 well thats your take on Xbox cause clearly exclusivity means a lot to you. In my cause for what i like better on Xbox than other platforms and why i game so much on it would include the following .
1. I like the controller layout best
2. GamePass
3. Timed Exclusives, still a lot not on PS day and date.
4 returns on digital purchases, try it on PS and find out
5 Ui
I could go on and on with free cloud saves all the way back to the 360 games i played. But it’s more than just exclusives games for me that make me buy a console. Cause as i said earlier there are still a lot of games on Xbox that still isn’t on PS, YET. They will likely come but i could say the same for PC over PS5. Most of the PS5 titles from Sony are on PC and the ones that aren’t are coming. So there’s many reason to pick a place to play. But exclusives for me just isn’t as big of a thing for me as i know PS and Xbox are both putting there games another places.
In closing let me ask you if some day all the PS games are on Steam and some come to NIntendo Switch and Xbox console/PC can play steam. Does that make the PS less fun and exciting to you? Or are there other things about the PS platform you like enough to stay playing there?
@HotGoomba i think its more like they want to release them sooner then later , so if 1 or 2 games are ready they'll release those and then release the others over time as they are completed. other wise it would be a while for the entire collection to be ported over.
I should have known they’d be too greedy to release the complete MCC. But as long as the original trilogy is available, that’s not too bad. But I don’t think they’ll release them individually for $70 each. That’s a bit too greedy.
I don't care. I have so much to play that it'll be ages before I even consider it. I'll take gears of war before this anyway so its a moot point.
Is Halo 4 considered the ugly duckling? I remember getting a cheap 360 in about 2013 (about my 4th one all in all) and I loved Halo 4.
Sensible to drip feed, allowing people to experience and enjoy Master Chief at a manage pace.
It's funny how some are now using that Xbox going multiplatform as an excuse. Or Xbox had no games as a reason for never owning an Xbox. Then say id buy Halo, Gears of War, Fable, Forza 😆😆😆. Some of those games have been on Xbox for 20 years.
@cragis0001 I don't see how it's funny. It has some pretty good games (personally, I'm only interested in Fable), but that's not a reason to buy an actual console, if you have a huge backlog already.
In terms of story the original trilogy is all that really matters. Though i’d add Reach is a great prequel that adds a lot of context.
ODST is mostly unimportant to the wider narrative.
4 is a side story that was mostly forgotten later.
5 has mostly been retconned in Infinite.
Though in terms of gameplay all would be better.
@rusty82 yeah, unfortunately. even though i don’t like it much myself, it’s still arguably better than halo 5 .
I would much rather them release them one at a time than the whole Master Chef Collection honestly.
Kinda curious - it's not a bank-holiday over in the UK... why so quiet today (don't tell me liquidators have moved in... in this day and age, anything crap could happen). Hope you're all busy playing games.
@naruball that's my point though. As a large portion of the Playstation community never had any intention to own an Xbox. So make excuses like the multiplatform release or had no games in the first place. Now it's a constant debate to which game is heading to Playstation on a daily basis.
@cragis0001 I'm not sure you are phrasing that correctly. The media are in a constant debate, not the players, as it's still novel that MS have capitulated and publish everywhere now, it's a big story.
Not sure the bulk of PS players care though, did you not see the sales figures for ms games on ps? It was a lot less than I expected, and showed only a very small contingent of ps players will buy this stuff. I'm pretty sure sales will be better for the newer titles and day one releases though.
Simple fact is that there is more than enough quality and variety in the PS catalogue to ensure most of us have a large backlog already. It may generate headlines, but very few ps players are sitting around waiting on ms titles to release.
As for Halo, it's only the original trilogy I care about, and I don't even boot that up on my series x, so certainly not going to buy on ps. It's a big story because MasterChef is so iconic for Xbox , it would be like having Ratchet and Clank on the series X...
@Titntin I don't know what people were expecting with sales numbers for years old Xbox games on PlayStation. I thought 1.8m Sea of Thieves was a pretty massive success for a 7 year old game.
How much do you think PlayStation games sell on PC? The insomniac leak showed at the time:
I thought the Xbox numbers were largely in similar vein and about what you would expect for each games wider popularity with a few slightly underperforming like the PS titles.
Day 1 is too important if you want the massive numbers.
@Oz_Who_Dat_Dare kids have broken up for holiday for a lot of us, could be that
@themightyant
The difference is I'm not championing the idea that PC players were sitting around waiting for Sony games, so the comparison is a moot point? Where did I mention sonys sales on pc? I don't know why you are quoting such irrelevant figures?
But now that you have, it simply reinforces my point: nobody is waiting around on one system desperate to play titles from another, which is all my post suggested.
Sea of Thieves was the one that bucked the trend and it's nice to see Rare get a substantial addition to their player counts on that title.
@Klone ah... that I can understand... school holidays are always fun (whether you're having time off with the family, or just enjoying the quiet commute to work).
@Titntin I agree people aren't waiting around for games, Day 1 is most important if you want the really big sales numbers. I didn't say you were championing that idea. I referenced the Sony -> PC numbers as it gives a realistic ballpark target of what to expect for older games being rereleased on other systems and because it's data we DO have. e.g. If a much bigger title like Spider-man is "only" selling 1.3m on PC and Uncharted is less than 0.5m what should we realistically expect of some of these much smaller Xbox titles?
But the Insomniac leak also showed us how much some of these ports cost (Spider-man $2.3 million, Miles Morales $1.5m etc.) so they don't have to sell that many units to start making a healthy profit. They would start to break even on revenue for Spider-man at around 55k full priced PC sales after Steams 30% cut (which lowers after $10m USD in sales). Obviously there's other taxes involved and not all sales will be Day 1 / full price so it may a bit higher, but it goes to show the sales numbers needed to start making a profit on ports aren't massive. In the thousands or tens of thousands of units in most cases. Meanwhile the games will continue to sell for years to come. Long tail is also important in this industry.
@themightyant
Yes, at no point am I suggesting it's not a sound commercial decision. Ms can make a healthy profit on these titles without shifting many millions for sure.
Whilst Sony sales on PC are indicative, the pc market is very different to consoles, so I believe their relevance is limited when discussing console to console.
My original post was a reply to another post which had stated that 'ps gamers had originally suggested MS had no games and yet were all desperate to get there hands on them now'. There's no evidence that would support such a case. Indeed, the best seller reached maybe 2.5% of ps5 players which would support the case that over 97% of PS players have not been tempted by anything MS have released so far - hardly a sign of them desperately waiting for the games Xbox have had on their eco system this gen.
Day one and big ticket games like Indy will hopefully do better, but they arrive as just another 3rd party AAA game amoung many others and not something the bulk of PS players are desperately waiting for, which is the only point I was contending.
That this is a very profitable move is undeniable. MS would not throw away their Xbox sales chasing this money otherwise. Let's face it, if Phil was not answerable to the shareholders ultimately, he wouldn't want to do this regardless of sales!
@Titntin I missed that you were responding to another user, my bad, my replies weren't in reference to that.
I agree that Day 1 sales and bigger games like Indy, Forza, Halo will likely sell a lot more. It will be interesting to see how this develops for Xbox and Sony over the years to come.
Even Sony with their modest output on PC, Switch and Xbox already made $730m in revenue from non-PlayStation sales on those platforms in FY2023, up from $500 in FY2022, and are on track to have made even more in FY2024. It's going to be a billion dollar side hustle for them very soon. (I'd quite like a billion dollar side hustle)
For Xbox being a much larger publisher, and the smallest platform, multi-platform is far more important and a much larger slice of their pie, though Microsoft don't release those cuts.
I have never played a Halo game
I would prefer the collection but microsoft will get more money out of me by staggering each release, one at a time.
@Titntin I agree the media is very biased. But the loyal hardcore PlayStation fanboys are more who I was referring to. You see them on YouTube like PRock77, Xvault etc. You occasionally see them on here & Pure Xbox also.
I agree it is a big deal the shift from both Xbox plus PlayStation to be a platform & 3rd party publisher. I did see the figures & wasn't really surprised that Sea of Thieves was the best sold. Newer titles will more likely sell better. So it will be interesting what Microsoft does with that data. So is it big titles like Gears of War, Fable, Forza, Halo with Bethesda & Activision Blizzard. Does that mean Avowed & South of Midnight get ported. Again many unknowns.
@cragis0001 Sorry I'm not aware of those YouTubers. They certainly don't seem very representative of the majority of players.
As for what gets ported, it's quite clear now that it's everything, Spencer has been quite specific in making this clear. Obviously they are only going to spend minimum effort on older titles, but all newer titles will be developed with multiplat in mind. That will include Avowed, and maybe South of Midnight if it reviews ok (but I question that title). Avowed is a decent 8/10 game and would sell decently to the PS audience imo. It only falls off near the end, but that took me over 90 hours to reach 😄
Exciting times for industry watchers, plenty to look out for. Have a great day.
@Nepp67 Reach is my favourite, with Combat Evolved a close second.
@Titntin yeah the YouTube podcasters unfortunately give PlayStation fandom a very bad name.
I thought it was gonna be everything as well until the CEO S Nadella during his last interview. Again said that he hated exclusives but said in some instances are needed. So confirmed that some exclusives will exist on Xbox. Looking at the sales figures of Pentinent & HiFi Rush I guess it could be niche AA titles. That's why I mentioned Avowed as it didn't sell well on Steam & potentially South of Midnight.
Indeed it is an exciting time to be a gamer.
Reach is good. The older ones haven’t aged well and the newer ones are crap.
That's fine, to be honest.
@HonestHick Consoles just simply don't offer enough other than exclusives and ease of use to justify their purchase. If Playstation gives their exclusives away to every platform then I'll stick with my PC. Especially when both Playstation and Xbox are giving away their console features away to PC anyways such as gamepass.
@Nepp67 yeah i mean i hear what you are saying. I never thought i would go the PC route. I have been a console gamer since Super Nes. But lately the consoles offer a lesser experience and often times outside of hardware more money for less in return. So i hear what you are saying.
PC has Xbox games, Gamepass and free online with achievements, and even tho PS has timed Exclusives, those games are now all on PC, with trophy support and free online. If Sony hadn’t cancelled all those live service games, they really wouldn’t have had exclusives cause those would have been day and date on PC. Plus i could play them with a controller with off set sticks which i prefer. So at the moment i am in the process of building my first ever gaming PC. I was so close on Saturday to getting a 5080 but it sold out before i could get it in cart. I think the only console i will rock after my build is complete is a Switch 2 cause they have true exclusives. PC and Switch 2 is the best combo right now for me.
@themightyant Them sales number are over a year old as (Dec 19, 2023) I guess u thank they have not went up ! I have not liked a Halo sense bungie left ! But them are opinion's !
All I question is, it is for compatibility sake or is it for drumming up news roll out of so it's stupid. Take time, and release them individually or the collection. Stop making it stupid-ly complicated. XD
I'm happy with my 360 versions or MCC (Xbox One version) it having FPS and fixes but I barely care to touch Halo as it is anymore anyway.
I barely cared for 5 and I played it and it's ok but even still. I refused to play it during launch and waited years till I was in the mood to play it. Still owned it/was on the home shelf but I wasn't buying it anyway.
Even Forza Motorsport 6&7 I waited, went eh I'll jump on them to complete the series and we'll 7 was fair, 6 was the most restrictive game I've ever played of a boring progression in a video game after 5&7 having better then 6 and 1-4 are just better.
@Repo_Dog No. Of course sales have kept going up, but it’s the most up to date data we have, we can only speculate how much they have sold since. But as I said in another post Sony are on track to make around, perhaps just under, $1 billion USD on non-PlayStation game sales (PC, Xbox, Switch, Mobile) in FY2024, it’s big business.
Most important question for me, is it going to be a physical release? And if so, will it contain the entire game data on disc? I'm looking at you Henry Walton Jones, Jr.
Sell them separately maybe to earn more money I already have it on Steam it goes on sale for like £12 for the whole lot
@HonestHick pc gaming is amazing , you’ll love it
and your xbox account is literally incorporated within it so you’ll still be online on xbox live and get achievements and all
@nomither6 you know it! I am there. I never loved PS controller since PS1 really. Lazy Super Nes clone with added thumb sticks in the wrong place. I was so close to buying a 5080 this weekend but someone beat me to it. I will build a 5080 build with the best AMD CPU and get a swtich 2 and not need a controller that needs a diet
(Dual Sense)
@HonestHick haha i’m with you on those controllers, i personally never had a problem with em but the faulty drift sense in particular has costed me so much money that im convinced its intentional nickel & diming. And i see you’re doing it big for your first taste of the master race! a 5080 and latest CPU?! sheesh!🥵😂 more power to you!🔥
also you can use ANY controller on PC; i’ve been using hyperkin Xbox360 controller(My fav controller of all time) and have had zero problems and zero drifts , i take it that you’ll also splurge on an elite controller? might as well! the options are limitless on pc🔥 i’m looking forward to your experience with it when you’re all set up 👍
@cragis0001 oh, I see. Yeah, that makes sense.
