Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves is a new release in SNK’s decades-old fighting franchise. It’s the epitome of niche – but its marketing is anything but!
While the actual game looks a little dated compared to genre titans like Street Fighter 6 and Mortal Kombat 1, its advertising is on another level.
Not content with adding soccer superstar Cristiano Ronaldo to its roster, it’s also signed up two massive names in the streaming game, KSI and IShowSpeed, who will anchor when it sponsors a couple of real-life heavyweight boxing clashes in London and New York.
Not only that, but it’s also decked out buses in the English capital, and we’re fairly convinced this isn’t the end of its efforts, as there’s still over a week until release.
Of course, SNK has access to Saudi Arabia’s unfathomably large Private Investment Fund, so money isn’t really an obstacle here.
It’s still a little surprising to see the series marketed more strongly than many of the biggest names in genre, though – we wonder if it’s all going to pay off or not.

It's an underrated series.
Well they've lost a sale here due to the utter nonsense guest characters.
I cannot stand that speed chap. I just cannot sanction his buffoonery.
@MrPeanutbutterz preconceived notions aside, what if they're fun to play?
@Hundred_Hand_Slap I can't engage in escapism when I'm playing as a footballer who's paid several million per week.
It won't be as good as Street Fighter 6 anyways, so it's all moot really.
You say unfathomably large, but its entire value is around $930b, which would get you around 1/3rd of Microsoft. That kind of puts into perspective just how much power these large American tech companies actually wield. Of course, America is the exploited victim these days and China is the real enemy…
@ChrisDeku Touché!
@MrPeanutbutterz I see what you mean, but wouldn't it be fun to clobber those ridiculous guest characters? At least that's how I'm looking at it.
I saw an out of service one of these in Knightsbridge recently. I didn't know they were on actual routes, I just thought it was one promo bus.
@Weebleman Ive never heard of him lol, i suppose Ishowignorance 😀
The marketing they're putting into this is definitely super crazy. Even if it is weird and that they have access to the Saudi's oil money, I do hope it does find great success because the game is super fun and I want more fighters to be able to pierce super mainstream spaces worldwide like MK and Smash since the average person would only talk about them.
@Jrs1 your life is far better for it in this instance my friend.
@Weebleman Im at the age now when a "celebrity" edition of a gameshow is on TV i maybe only know a quarter of them (rest are apparently youtubers, streamers, reality tv star wannabees) If i thought streaming would make me rich i'll have ti film myself takin a p@#s
@MrPeanutbutterz I agree with you 100%. There’s a goofy agenda to this in advertising other assets of the Saudi Investment Fund and I just don’t feel right about it.
@Jrs1 I hear you man. 46 here and 90% of stuff on tv confuses me
My only question is are they actually marketing it to people who are likely to play it?
The guest characters even if they seem out of place, in a recent tournament many enjoyed playing them, so maybe try to having fun instead of complaining about who they are!
I don't know who any of these people are, and it's not like I don't watch YouTube. If anything I watch too much YouTube
Just from that KSI ad alone makes me avoid checking the game out altogether.
Ishowspeed is like Johnny Somali but somehow actually popular.
Maybe I am just getting old but all of these streamers are absolutely insufferable.
@carlos82 Seems like they have no clue what they're doing. On one hand, they're currently marketing it using real life celebrities... okay. On the other, that's alienating some of the core fanbase. Then of course it's not exactly a newbie-friendly franchise. Can see Little Johnny who has a Ronaldo jersey getting royally upset when he gets cained online because he has no clue how to play these games.
@somnambulance That's it exactly. When a work of escapism/fantasy pulls you not just back into the real world, but also reminds you that you are nothing but a cash cow for these people that's there to be milked... epic fail all-round.
Yeah, I don’t think I’ve ever seen so much advertisement for an SNK game. And as much as I’m not really feeling these guest characters, this will not stop me from getting the game. Still a nice amount of great characters to start with.
Doesn't help sell it to me, and it almost feels like complete desperation.
I will never understand why anyone gives these 'influencers' the time of day.
Though I applaud 2k for putting Logan Paul in WWE games - it always feels good using Bray's (RIP) Mandible Claw to finish him...
@carlos82 They covered that ground. Last week they had a showcase + mini tournament played by pro players and they had fun with Ronaldo and Salvatore character

I personally really enjoyed the gameplay. Tried the 2nd open beta and i got B-IV rank with Rock. I might buy the game but not on day 1.
@get2sammyb: You forgot to add this, rather silly, promo ad video that is kinda related to the topic.

@ChrisDeku It's true, but their focus is currently quite narrow so anything they give attention really gets attention.
I hope the game is good, if it gets a massive ad push like its getting, cant be bad for fighting games if it onboards a bunch of GenZ and Alpha players
