There are so many great games, lost to time and locked to the PS3.
The console’s unnecessarily complicated architecture mean Sony’s never really entertained the idea of backwards compatibility, meaning many games can only be played using PS Plus Premium cloud streaming on the PS5.
But that’s where remaster specialists Nightdive Studios, who’ve brought back a bunch of classics including Turok and The Thing, come in.
In an interview with VGC, boss Larry Kuperman said his team is “ready” to face the challenge.
Studio head Stephen Kick added: “I think that architecture – I mean, I remember the talk when the system was first released, of how difficult it was for developers to ‘get’ it – and that’s a big problem with backwards compatibility.
“So yeah, if we get to that, or I should say when we get to the PS3 era games, it will be a challenge that we have to face. But I think that we’ve had enough experience to where we can do a serviceable job on a PS3 remaster.”
Kick continued to speak specifically about Free Radical’s ill-fated PS3 exclusive first-person, Haze.
“With a game like Haze – let’s say hypothetically we had access to that, and that was our big title for 2028, right? – we would go to the original designers, and we would say: ‘It didn’t do as well as you had hoped, I’m sure you’ve had a lot of time to ruminate and to think about what you would have done differently.’
“We’ve had these discussions before with [the original] developers on some of these games, and we’ve given them an opportunity to come back and say ‘this is what I would have done’.
“In the case of System Shock 2 Remastered and a lot of these other games that we’ve been looking at, as soon as you bring them over to newer hardware, some of the problems start to clear themselves up, like frame rate, refresh rate, texture resolution, streaming, [and] loading times.”
Are there any PS3 era games in particular that you think warrant the remaster treatment?
Personally, we’d love to Nightdive Studios potentially partner with Sony and bring back series like Resistance and Killzone, which are pretty much only really playable on the PS3 these days. We’d also love to revisit the MotorStorm titles on more modern hardware.

Original Motorstorm at 4k60 would be lovely.
Warhawk and Motorstorm would be awesome.
Killzone 2&3 and Metal Gear Solid 4!
Killzone 2 was one of the best shooters I've ever played! I loved the weightiness of the gunplay and the story was INCREDIBLE. I hope sony passes the IP to another developer or Guerilla has another go at the franchise because its so good.
Sony doesn't have really any first party shooters (non-live service) and the Helghast have to be the most well written enemy faction ever.
Infamous & especially Infamous 2 & it’s vampire DLC!
I hope there will be multiplayer for resistance 1. That was addicting for me.
I’d absolutely love to have the Resistance series remastered as well as inFamous and Killzone. Honestly, there are a LOOOOOT of great games in the PS3 era that could stand a remaster.
resistance 1, 2, 3
killzone 2, 3
infamous, infamous 2 infamous, festival of blood
metal gear solid 4
singularity
darkness, darkness 2
chronicles of riddick
remember me
deus ex human revolution
fallout 3, fallout new vegas
dead space 2, 3
max payne 3
I played the hell out of KZ 1 and 2.
I would love to play KZ 1 again on modern systems
Deus Ex Human Revolution would be great
I am incredibly glad to hear that. There's so many great games that are stuck on the PS3.
Kinda doubt they have PS Studios games in mind. Also not super confident Sony would care to outsource to Nightdive — even though Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo alike should jump on the opportunity to work with this amazing team.
Even besides that, the thought of retooled and spruced up Haze is infinitely more interesting to me than remasters of perfectly fine Sony games that they could get ported to the PS5 with a decent enough PS3 emulator. So yeah, do Haze! Maybe Duke Nukem Forever, or even Alien Colonial Marines. Someone else said Singularity and Chronicles of Riddick — I wholeheartedly agree. Why not Bad Company 1 & 2? Ooh, Jericho would be a deep cut (I am reading a list of PS3 shooters at this point, yes). How about that boring Modern Warfare clone Metal of Honor? That boring Turok. That forgotten Wolfenstein. Hell, get Spec Ops: The Line on the line and make a funner game around the same amazing interactive story.
Give me MAG! I know it won’t ever happen, but I loved that game and the small dedicated community that played it was pretty awesome. Would love to see FEAR 2 and 3, as well as, the Condemned games. Pupeteer would be nice to have also.
I would be up for fallout 3 and new Vegas remasters.
Mortal Kombat 9 with the guest character of the proper god of war 👍🏻 not the watered down one from 2018 and ragnarok 😎.
Games like Killzone 2 and 3, running at 4k60, would look right at home on modern systems. MGS4 too. Visually, they still hold up really well 🤩 I'd also like to see God of War Ascension get a remaster some day. And give ICO a nice little remake 🥹 And let us play fun indies like Tokyo Jungle again! 😄 And remaster Siren: Blood Curse, but also fix the controls and the camera etc etc. 😓 So many games.. I could go on and on 😅
Motorstorm,M.A.G,resistance,killzone,socom...for the love of God give us a new socom game or at least just remaster the ps3 version with a first person view and easier controls..somebody mentioned warhawk for some reason which would be great for the fans but I personally thought it was garbage and the whole online lobby's were a chore.
Don't want any more remasters.
Well I've been buying up PS3/360 shooters for $5 and because of their mechanics, not the continued IPs I fouyless exciting, and enjoyed odd other titles because I thought third party publishers gave up on the left behind IPs in favour of the few they knew sold more.
So PS3 remasters or emu sure. But make the IPs offered worth it.
Remasters don't bother me if it's an IP I know isn't touched. When it's remasters of the same IPs I don't care. When it's IPs that aren't touched I care.
Or I collect the original as nothing is being done with them and left behind IPs stay that way, left behind.
So remasters are fine but licensing wise how many will be touched?
Particular ones sure. But even still I can get the originals for $5 and whatever condition disks. Rough even sure but still. Bought so many I don't think a remaster will change much. Licensing or companies need to care or less well originals and no money for them is fine by me in the second hand market. They have to put effort in.
I waited for COD back compat of OF Xbox, nothing, why I don't buy Xbox digital for those that would that's what they missed besides disk users. So PS2 instead and PC originals not Xbox got the focus. That's on Activision.
Even many other consoles puzzle games or other genres won't. For PS1/PSP are dead. I enjoy them, they won't get support, aren't on Vita store either, never were PSP store I assume either.
Konami won't touch Coded Arms PSP entries,/dead prototype PS3 build of Assault. Capcom won't Under the Skin on PS2 or modernize it as a live service even if it's gameplay works for one with perks/disguises and cell shaded.
Plenty of old gen stuff or odd one off Japanese PS3/360 shooters. Why would they care now.
Show me varied IPs I care, popular only and common games pass.
@Wilshiire talk about weight on the guns- that shotgun looked, sounded, and felt like you just fired a medieval giant 20 ton cannon you're carrying around. And then you cock it like a badass
You know what PS3 titles I want access to? Mod Nation Racers remastered. Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots. Oblivion. Fallout 3. Fallout New Vegas. Orange Box anyone? Portal 2? ***** it: give me a complete Rock Band collection and new kits. Black Ops 1 re-release would slap, too.
MGS4, Resistance 1-3 and Killzone 1-3 for me please
"The console’s unnecessarily complicated architecture"
What's up with the snark? Maybe it's complexity contributed to some of the special experiences we got in that era.
Implicit Conversions, the guys Sony hires to emulate all the PS1/PS2 classics available on PS Plus Premium tier, are also working on making PS3 emulation work. If they can fix it, their the more likely culprit to bring over first-party stuff as they would be given access to the whole library.
I’d like them to bring back the infamous games, only shift it to a new engine with smaller load times, and give Cole some nicely animated hair. They were really good games but marred by the limits of the system and in game barbers.
And THIS is exactly why Sony never cared about backward compatibility. Their whole ecosystem is a mess. I shouldn’t have to rebuy games I already own just because I want to play them on newer hardware. Like, I bought a bunch of PS1 and PS2 classics digitally on my PS3—why the hell can’t I just redownload them on PS4 or PS5? Oh wait, because Sony would rather sell me the same game again at full price.
Meanwhile, Xbox lets you pop in a 20-year-old disc, and it just works. But with PlayStation, unless it’s a PS4 game, good luck. Want to play a PS3 game? Gotta stream it through their overpriced subscription. Want to play an old PS1 or PS2 game? Hope they decided to re-release it (and charge you again for it).
Sony’s whole approach is just a cash grab. Instead of letting us carry forward our libraries like Xbox does, they make sure we have to keep paying for the same games over and over. It’s ridiculous.
I'm not sure if I imagined this, but I feel like I heard there's one person at Nightdive whose dream game is a remaster of The Darkness. True or not, I'd certainly be up for that! Especially since that first game doesn't have a PC version like the sequel does.
Seeing Kill zone 2 in the comments makes me very happy, it's probably my favourite multiplayer FPS game of all time!
I remember Resistance Fall of Man was one of the few games that actually had online at the time and because of that, it had a LOT of people playing online. The laughs we all had from that game from random angry people will never be forgotten.
We definitely need to go back and bring forward so many of the games made for PS3 not just first party but I'd definitely start there.
We really don't get the types of games we used to back then anymore and while indies and AA devs try to recapture some of the magic, they don't always have the budget or are able to capture enough attention from enough players to keep the projects profitable.
@Ausboy31 With Warhawk they have a easy liveservice game.
I'd like to see the Portal games brought together in one package
I'd definitely kill for a Folklore remaster. Though for that they probably have to ask Sony for permission lol
@SoulsBourne128 that would be awsome and how Infamous while they are at it
Apart from the obvious ones like Killzone, Infamous, Motorstorm etc, I'd really like to play games like 'Rain' again
I think it's far more likely that they'll be remaking games that weren't tied to one platform.
Ps3 was sonys peak, so id LOVE to have those games on my system( and linked to my account). I own everything on ps3 but id gladly buy them all again. BUT i think they should give EVERY game a resolution and fps boost, same with the ps2 games. There should at least be an option to toggle that on
Games like gta4, killzone2&3, resistance, inFAMOUS1&2, god of war ascension, heavenly sword & PLAYSTATION ALL STARS BATTLE ROYALE!!!!!!!! Are stranded on the ps3 and it hurts
The PS3 Ratchet and Clank games would be great to have, some of the best if not the best R&C games
Lots of great suggestions here already, but if I had to choose just one it would be a remaster of Motorstorm Pacific Rift... games like that just aren't made anymore.
Regarding Haze... I don't know what they could do to make that game good, it was just mediocre all around.
How about the original the darkness
The PS3 era was a great time! Rainbow 6 Vegas, Killzone, Motorstorm, Resistance, Spec-ops the line, Ghost Recon AW. I’m not a big fan of remasters but i think that PS3 games are a great idea!!
They should purge Resistance 3 and do it over again. That series took a weird turn with the ending of 2 and 3 just not following up.
@Wilshiire I’m a huge Killzone fan. Well 1-3 that is. I think someone else should do something with the IP. As the blokes and ethos of old studio is mostly gone. And the present studio would make a soft, overly clean Killzone story, and less masculine entry. I’m willing to pay full price for a physical remastered PS5 set. Some people want bloodborne. I want KZ.
I want the Resistance games, never could play any of them back in the day, and Castlevania Lords of Shadow trilogy too. I missed Castlevania #2. I know the bad rep, but I really want to see the end of tha story.
Alice Madness Returns, Mercenaries and the Saboteur would do it for me. Dante's Inferno or the Orange Box would be great too, maybe even Brütal Legend or Alpha Protocol, some jank was good. I'm sure there are a lot more, I own about 200 PS3 games and can only think of a small few, back then I didn't follow any gaming news so most buys were a gamble, many paid off. The Getaway games and Driver games would be great too but I'm pretty sure most of those were PS2.
Fallout 3 & NV, Dragon Age Origins, Witcher 2 and Rayman Origins, please.
Give me a sly Cooper collection remastered. A infamous 1 and 2 remake.a kill zone remastered collection. And of course give me a resistance remastered collection.word up son
Resistance Fall of Man was just fantastic. Would like to give those games another go. An updated edition of the whole trilogy sounds like an excellent idea.
Especially considering I missed out on the third one.
I would also love to see the Dragon Age games given an update, even if it is only the first two. But that won’t happen, will it?
The trouble is that the original Dragon Age games use a completely unique engine. Too bad there is no-one left at BioWare that knows how to use it.
How about some more Mirrors Edge? Or a rebuild of the PS3 original?
Sony needs to do these already:
Resistance collection
Killzone collection
Infamous collection
Motorstorm collection
Ratchet & Clank Future collection
God of War Greek Saga
As for 3rd-party:
Portal collection
MGS4
GTA4
There are some more, but these are the essentials.
Motorstorm Apocalypse
MotorStorm, MotorStorm: Pacific Rift, MotorStorm: Arctic Edge
And then a brand new one.
Oh I hope so! We need them not just streaming!
Remaster Drakengard 3 or Metal Gear Solid 4. Games from huge IPs stuck on PS3…
Motorstorm, best madness multiplayer racing. inFamous 1 and 2, excellent start to a franchise which is lost to most. Resistance had 3 excellent games which have gone for most. There will be more but there's a start. Mainly original Motorstorm for me modernised. Loved that game.
