Update []: Fresh information from Nintendo suggests the newly announced Yakuza 0: Director’s Cut could come to PS5 after all.
In a press release from the Mario maker, it states that the expanded version of Kazuma Kiryu’s origin story will release “first” on Nintendo Switch 2, implying it’s a timed exclusive with multiformat versions to follow.
It’s unclear whether SEGA will retroactively add in the new content to existing versions of the game, or just re-release it entirely. Either way, it sounds like we’ll be able to play this on PlayStation eventually.
Original Story: Yakuza 0 is considered by many — this author included — to be the best instalment in SEGA's storied franchise. How excited we were, then, to learn that a Director's Cut of this classic crime drama is dropping in the summer.
There's one big problem if you're a PlayStation fan, however: Yakuza 0 Director's Cut is exclusive to Nintendo Switch 2.
A kick in the gut, especially since this port features "never-before-seen cutscenes" and a brand new, four-player online mode called 'Red Light Raid'. Try saying that one a bunch of times fast!
To be brutally honest, we can't imagine this mode being anything truly unmissable, but developer RGG Studio does say that it boasts "up to 60 unlockable characters". We're looking forward to seeing what it actually is, at least.
Oh, and this version's also got an English dub — but only sickos would even dream of playing an RGG game with anything but the original Japanese voices.
Are you disappointed that Yakuza 0 Director's Cut isn't coming to PS5 or PS4? Just wait for the inevitable PS6 Yakuza 0 remake in the comments section below.

Greedy Sony money hating everything! Jim Ryan is the worst!
Oh… wait, wrong company, don’t worry all is good!
I’m not bothered to be honest, I really don’t need to go back to that perfection of a story to see a few extra cutscenes nor the tacked on 4 player co-op. Only a matter of time before it gets released for other systems. Gold statued Sega likes money
I'm sure we will get the PS5 version down the line. RGG Studio won't leave us hanging forever.
"Third-party exclusivity is evil!"
sad day for fans...
don't care about the online stuff, neither voice over....
but missing out on cut szenes?
now that sony opens up for pc and xbox opens up to sony....
nintendo starts excuslivity? duskblood and now yakuza?
for what ever reason... while i always protected nintendo as my 2nd console cuz it made sence of its home exlusives and family games...
right now a feeling of disguest, disappointment and sadness fills me... change it fast...
Another thing to note is Hades 2 looks like is gonna be a timed console exclusive for Switch 2 (AND Switch 1).
I played Yakuza 0 for 80+ hours and i never feel one bit where i think this game desperately needs an online MP. So eh, i'm not missing anything.
The best is Yakuza 5
Exclusivity is evil unless its nintendo
@CsMs2o Maybe a bit of an overreaction there, mate...
@anoyonmus Makes sense since the first Hades was Switch console-exclusive for a time.
@ButterySmooth30FPS yeah. And also Supergiant got lot of support from Nintendo for the first game so kinda makes sense.
“Oh, and this version's also got an English dub — but only sickos would even dream of playing an RGG game with anything but the original Japanese voices.”
This so very, very much. Don’t get me wrong, the English dub quality for the Ichiban-based games is decent overall, but that voice for Kiryu is just not good. At all. I bounced right back to Japanese after hearing it.
@RoomWithaMoose
don't think so - i was ready to pre-order but after the price discussion, games and exclusivly my feelings just won't let me
i probably will get one soon or later ond a deal in a year or so, cuz i have a few games i looking forwards too
but the lost of identiy for nintendo has started... and my guts feeling stays.... i am not happy where it leads
don't get me wrong i am not against nintendo or switch never was - but right now this is my impression... and i wish they change these direction they heading
@CsMs2o Concern about price and games is fair. But this whole 'exclusivity' thing is nonsense. Nintendo has a long history of 3rd-party exclusives, and has never been anything but gatekeepey about in-house developed games. And Sony is still very much into exclusivity.
You can hate exclusivity — I think most of us kinda do. But this narrative is rubbish
@RoomWithaMoose
oh the exclusivity doesn't concern me at all - i love Xenoblade, Bravely Default many more are exclusive - the reason i buy a switch/ 3Ds and so on in the first place, nintendo always is my 2nd console
the issue is having fans out there from a LONG history of game like Yakuza or Bloodborne (duskblood looks to similar sorry) and making a NEW version with EXCKLUSIVE features and sell it exclusively to their platform - and that is a direction i don't like and never will, and say as you like this is a marketing strategy to get these fans to a new platform they don't prefer cuz they are lockedout of their fransise they love elsewere~
so sorry no overreaction - for me this is diffrent and adds to my bad feeling over the overall presentation
You can watch those cutscenes on youtube lol. Unless it's a proper remaster, I'm not bothered.
@czDante92
fair and thats what i probably will - but it still doesn't make it better Oo
my bad feeling stays and i wish not to keep going into that direction~
if thats not ur opinion feel free to do whatever~ no clue why you would bother with argumenting
@CsMs2o Bayonetta 2, though...? Even DQ S, which was later ported and likely indicates Yakuza 0's future.
@RoomWithaMoose Bayonetta 2 was funded by Nintendo itself
I'll buy and it play it again.
@RoomWithaMoose
ye lets hope - for duskblood aswell to be ported
tho ports usually aren't great, example MH Rise, better directly multiplatform to be optimized while produced
DQXI S released also as diffrent version DQXI on PS4 with better fps and the S version was later ported and replaced
inhouse production and IPs i understand to stay exclusivly - like mario, zelda for nintendo
TLOU or Uncharted for PS
but 3rd party and longer fransises should not - honestly
@anoyonmus Has it been confirmed that Duskblood isn't?
The extra stuff here will be a nothing burger to be honest. Have seen this kind of update before.
I'm a huge fan of the series, but I'm not hearing anything that would make me feel an urgent need to pick this version up even when I do eventually get a switch 2
@RoomWithaMoose Idk about that but the game is launching exclusively for Switch 2.
I’m not sure who is publishing it though. If it’s FromSoftware, then you have some hope. If it’s Nintendo, welp good luck
@freddquadros How's that Yakuza Dead Souls remaster going?
As someone who has been slogging through yakuza zero for the last seven years, more cut screens would feel like a repeated kick to the gut, less cut screens on the other hand would be fantastic
I play with English Dub on.
I must be a sicko then because the English dub makes this a buy for me if I get a Switch 2.
Is this 100% confirmed not to be on PS5 like...ever?
@dodgykebaab Remains in the "we don't care" dimension. I would worry if I couldn't play Y3, Y4 and Y5, the one I'm currently playing. But a non-canonical spin-off?
@Bentleyma 100% confirmed sicko. The sickest sicko I ever saw.
How do you know for sure it’s exclusive? That’s fine if it, I’ll play it on the Switch 2, but I haven’t seen a real announcement saying it yet.
As a fan of the series since the PS2, this doesn't seem like much of a loss if they're just George Lucasing it, but I wonder if there'll be any meaningful gameplay tweaks.
I wouldn't be too surprised if it came to PS5, but I'm not really expecting it to.
Yakuza Kiwami 2 is getting a Director's cut?
@dskatter Yong Yea is just simply not a good voice actor for Kiryu.
@freddquadros I'm also hopeful it's a timed exclusive! I've never played the Yakuza franchise, would love to experience the first game chronologically with English voices.
Hopefully this also sells well enough for them to do re-releases of Kiwami 1-2 and 3-6 with English voices.
@Bentleyma @JazzieJeff1975 Same here, I'll always choose English voices when it's an option in games.
I feel as if I got enough from it my first time around. Now if they make the platinum easier… maybe I’d consider it. I say all this knowing I’d cave Day 1 if it comes here
@KidRyan I fully recommend the Yakuza franchise, I'm playing all games there too (played Y5 yesterday, amazing). But I really must stress to you,PLAY WITH JAPANESE VOICE ACTING. It is invaluable for the full Yakuza/Like a Dragon experience. In my opinion, this franchise has the best plot of gaming, and experiencing it with original voice acting is the way to go. Immersion is a key aspect. Thank me later.
@freddquadros I'll definitely consider it, my old PushSquare bud.
Loved Yakuza 0 so much but dont need to buy this. I'll watch the extra scenes online and that will be that
@DualWielding Yakuza 0 might be the most popular, but 1&5 are my favourites.
The best yakuza is 5, by far. But this is great. Don’t care about anything multiplayer though so the additions don’t matter to me. The extra cut scenes I’ll watch on YouTube.
