Many PlayStation fans would argue that this generation has never really got going, but that hasn't stopped the PS5 from being a commercial juggernaut.
Sony's current-gen machine has basically dominated the US market since its release in 2020. And now, five years on, it's the second fast selling PlayStation device ever, beaten only by the almighty PS2.
Ever-informative Circana analyst Mat Piscatella has provided a succinct breakdown, stating that the PS5 has sold 26.7 million units in the US as of the 4th October, 2025.
It's an impressive feat when you consider the ups and downs of this console generation.
Not only did Sony have to navigate the global pandemic, which significantly impacted initial PS5 production and shipping, the company's always positioned the system as a premium product.
Expensive hardware, games, and accessories have made the PS5 Sony's most financially inaccessible console since the PS3 — and that's without even mentioning the recent price increases.
And yet, the PS5 has enjoyed a huge amount of success; it's well on course to top 100 million units worldwide, and it'll almost certainly be counted amongst the best selling consoles of all time once its run is over.
How do you feel about the PS5, five years on from its release? Does it deserve such stellar sales numbers? Wonder if anything will ever top the PS2 in the comments section below.
