Following yesterday's tease, it has been confirmed that Stellar Blade developer Shift Up has acquired Unbound, the new studio set up by horror veteran Shinji Mikami. Games from Unbound will now be published by Shift Up, and the team is already hard at work on its first project for consoles and PC.
The vision for the buyout was to unite two video game creators under one roof: Shinji Mikami (Resident Evil, Devil May Cry, The Evil Within) and Hyung Tae Kim (Goddess of Victory: Nikke). According to the company's blog post, what brings the two together is "a shared conviction that strong creative direction and high-quality execution go hand in hand".
Mikami added: "We believe we can respect each other as creators and make games together. And I think with Hyung Tae, we can even enjoy the hard parts.” He goes further: “Seeing my own vision and ideals come into focus like this, and finding someone whose direction aligns so closely is something I’ve rarely experienced before in my career. I hope we keep building together for a long time."
Hyung Tae Kim then said: "I find it deeply meaningful to join forces with UNBOUND, which brings together a world-class development team led by CEO Shinji Mikami. This acquisition will serve as an opportunity to deliver the best gaming experience to users worldwide and further solidify SHIFT UP’s global development competitiveness."
Prior to the company purchase, the game Unbound is working on was described as "AAA quality and AA content, which is why we’re creating a title that offers a rich gaming experience and allows you to be completely immersed in its world". It's a new IP made in Unreal Engine 5 for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
It's not yet known if today's news will grant Unbound a bigger budget and resources, or if it'll stick to its original vision of creating smaller-scale titles.

Well this is a F*cking Dream Team!!!!
Strange day to announce this, is this definitely real? 😅
Honestly this could be a great pairing, having the old style from Mikami and the new from Hyung-tae, This just shows how much money Shift up have made from Nikke and Stellar Blade as they could buy up the studio. Speaking of which, wonder when we will get our first look at SB2?
Well this is some interesting news! Umm, April Fools?
April fools?
But if it's real then Stellar Blade really brought tons of money for Shift Up to the level where they big enough to acquire a studio.
am gonna quote a tweet that I found funny, " a naughty horror game is about to be born !!" 😄.
but in all seriousness am just looking forward to another Shinji Mikami masterpiece. all the games he made have their unique taste and fun and hopefully with shift up being their publisher he can be free to create these games.
@AnginaPectoris @Icey664 @PuppetMaster I don’t know about Korea but Japan regularly announces financial adjacent announcements on the first of April, as I believe it’s the start of their financial year (technically it’s the governments but it’s common for companies to adopt it too)
Then he cashes out, leaves, starts a new studio, and sells that too, he’s already done it twice (PlatinumGames & Tango)
@Icey664 yeah the worst day of the year to announce this, who knows!
Holy f-king sheet!
I never wanted Sony to acquire Shift Up, but now I want Shift Up to acquire Sony.
Great news... if real.
Don't announce real things on April Fools.
@LowDefAl Yes i knew 1st april is Japan new fiscal year. But that doesn't stop them when comes to april fools news. Some even had a good effort behind it. Did you see the fake movie trailer for "Gundam" Celestial Being with 2314 release date? 😆

Damn this is f....big greatness incoming
Hei Sony instead of buying slop companies why not acquiring shift up and give them full creator freedom and a big ass budget
@Dalamar fr
@Oram77 sexy cosmic horror incoming 🙏
@PuppetMaster never underestimate the power of hot characters have on gamers
Well color me very interested.
Bound again, am I right
@Yor-sama
"A big ass-budget"? You mean that in a literal sense...
Big if true.. Now if only they could buy the rights to The Evil Within so we could have a third game.
The hype is real.
Finally some good news, after a lot of bad ones.
Not excited about this at all until the game is actually out. I've seen too many of these hyped up partnerships and acquisitions lead to nowhere to get excited about another one.
Not sure if I read that right. Shift Up, a game dev studio, acquired Shinji Mikami’s studio. Dev acquiring a dev?
And even then, I feel Mikami would acquire Shift Up, not the other way around.
Either way. Best of luck to them.
In a time where layoffs are really common, it's kind of a breathe of fresh air to read something like this.
Looking forward to seeing what will come out of the partnership.
I really really hope Mikami is just going for a survival-horror again.
I just replayed Evil Within last week - still such a good game
@EfYI both senses xD
Imo they don't seem to be a good match, but let see how it goes...
@PuppetMaster they run one of the biggest mobile gacha games around. It makes them $20 million -a month-
Stellar Blade is just a side project.
@ThomasHL Are you trying to downplay Stellar Blade massive contribution for Shift Up revenue with 115 billion Won or $80 million for the 1st million copies sold, which was a record breaking revenue for the company?
The company itself said Stellar Blade is one of their major revenue, not a "side project".
@PuppetMaster Nikke literally makes that much money every 4 months
@ThomasHL And that doesn't change Stellar Blade status as one of their major revenue. Not to mention it was their first AAA console game. They wouldn't pour a lot of money and turn it into a franchise if it's a "side project" 🤷♂️
@PuppetMaster fair enough, I won't say it's a side project. Its a great game, they're clearly really proud of it and put in the love.
But when it comes to how they're in a position to buy another studio it's because of the game that's made them $800 million, not the $80 million one. And I bet they have a lot more staff working on the $800 million game.
@ThomasHL They didn't buy a single studio before Stellar Blade. So these 800 million revenue from Nikke doesn't sound like it's enough to give them confident to buy a studio. But whatever you say i guess 🤷♂️
Btw. Currently Stellar Blade at 6.1 million copies and still generate a good chunk of revenue.
@PuppetMaste if every single of those 6.1 million people paid $80 for Stellar Blade, that's still not close to Nikke's total revenue.
