A big budget Dungeons & Dragons project that was announced around this time last year has been canned, according to a report from Bloomberg.
This thing was a single-player action adventure game, spearheaded by Stig Asmussen — the veteran developer who directed God of War 3, and Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order. You have to assume that this project had real potential.
So why was Asmussen and his team at Giant Skull — which he founded last year — cut from entertainment juggernaut Hasbro's plans?
Well, in a nutshell, it sounds like the company was keen to lower costs. Despite having greenlit this D&D title, further assessment had convinced Hasbro and its subsidiary Wizards of the Coast to shut it down, having already taken measures to reorganise the company elsewhere.
A Wizards spokesperson stated: "While we decided not to pursue an early concept from Giant Skull, we have great respect for Stig Asmussen and his team and value our ongoing relationship."
I'm left wondering what Giant Skull will do next. If it was able to bag such a big project right off the bat, then it's easy to imagine that the independent studio's next outing will be pretty sizeable as well.
Ultimately, it's just a shame that we didn't get to see this one in action.
It's also worth mentioning that Wizards of the Coast has other video game projects in the works. Most notably, it's publishing the Mass Effect-like Exodus, which is targeting a 2027 release on PS5.
What do you make of this cancelled D&D game, then? Would you have had high hopes for it? Roll some natural 20s in the comments section below.

What a shame would of been good i bet
As long as borrowing rates are high there will be more closures and low investment in games. It's just too risky.
I love Stig's games, the Jedi games are great and God of War III is my favourite game in the series. The D&D part I could give or take, I play D&D games, but D&D isn't why I play them, so I hope they can move forward with something that will see the light of day.
Asmussen is known for his bombastic action, not quite sure how that would marry with D&D well.
Hasbro needs to get some Transformer games remastered or a new one out the door!
Change all the names of things, remove or change tails and horns, and re-shuffle some writing and it can just be worked on as a fantasy RPG. That's basically what Pathfinder did and it worked
I’m sure this will provide more cash flow for WotC to continue to ruin MtG through further ‘Fortnite-ification’, forcing in external non-related IP’s that have nothing to do with the game.
@Mikeg1965 Sequel to Transformers Devastation desperately required ha!
@Mikeg1965 I'd like to see a Micronauts game.
I'm always baffled by new studios going straight for AAA games. I'm genuinely wondering how often they are successful?
@Rhaoulos I’d rather AAA or AA instead of indies , as wrong as that may sound. indies are just too small scale and boring.
Building a new studio and a AAA game at the same time is a tall order that rarely ends well no matter how big the names involved are (or perhaps ‘because of’).
A lot of breakout hits come from studios that had started out modestly and cut their teeth on smaller projects. Anyway I hope Stig’s studio finds a new project soon.
@THEBrew - You have won the Internet today!
With "ROM The Space Knight" as a hidden character, one can only dream!
We don’t really need d&d while we have fromsoft. Saying that give the ip to from and they’ll make a banger
Really not trying to be snarky, but wouldn’t anyone into Dungeons & Dragons just… play Dungeons & Dragons?
@nomither6 What's your definition of indie games? Disco Elysium, Dispatch, The Alters, Dredge and Subnautica are among my favourite indie games and most are different in tone and gameplay.
@8th_Observer D&D is a ruleset and it's this wasn't going to be an actual representation of that, it was an action game. It's that odd, misleading thing where often when something is "a D&D game" they just mean it's set in the Forgotten Realms.
Also, even if it was actually a virtual version of D&D... Well I loved games like BG1-3 and Torment, NWN etc but whenever I've tried to watch people play actual D&D I started longing for something more interesting to do, like watch paint dry.
I got into D&D in 2017 or so, and as a hobby it very nearly rivals gaming as my biggest money-sink. I'd be all up for this game, but I am not surprised to hear it is cancelled.
Wizards of the Coast have been on an admirably committed streak of awful decisions for half a decade now, and it has painted a picture of a company that is ran by craven, entitled, greedy muppets.
Larians contract to develop Baldurs Gate III must have been fashioned by the fiends of the nine hells themselves in order to be ironclad enough for WotC to not back out at some point before it actually released. I'm sure they had to fight a lot more behind the scenes than what we already know.
@Donrenardo Most of those, yeah. Except Subnautica, I don’t think Subnautica is an indie, it’s AA in my opinion like Deep Rock Galactic.
I also want to clarify that by no means am I saying that indies aren’t good, i’m just not its audience
Shame, we'll just have to play that other AAA D&D adventure again.
@nomither6 I have seen indies that are better then tons of triple A garbage at a fraction of the cost. There is so much Triple A stuff that is so bloody boring around.
Always liked Stigs style and I like the idea of delving a little deeper into the d&d world so this would have been very intriguing for me. Shame it's panned out this way, hopefully the team gets another project.
@Mikeg1965 There was a theory that the Cybertron games were going to get relisted finally as their Steam pages got random updates but that was more than a year ago now so not likely. With Reactivate changing developers and then cancelled, after toys for it were already released too, I bet Hasbro is a bit anxious to make a proper Transformers game just yet. They still put out a simple kids game with each show but that is it.
Sony should hire them to make a live service game
@8th_Observer That’s the thing about people who play Dungeons and Dragons. There can NEVER be enough Dungeons and Dragons.
