I absolutely hate the name, but there's no denying the potential within The Adventures of Elliot: The Millennium Tales.
If you haven't been keeping up, this is a new action RPG from Square Enix, which boasts that (admittedly quite tired) HD-2D graphical style. It's from the same team that made the Octopath Traveler games.
The title was first announced back in the summer of last year, and it appealed to me right off the bat because of its action combat. I'm still a huge advocate of turn-based battles, for the record, but I do think it'll be interesting to see how the studio handles a hack-and-slash style.

Anyway, the "Prologue Demo" for The Adventures of Elliot is available to download right now on PS5. It's just under 6GB in size, and you'll be able to carry over your progress to the full release when it drops on the 18th June.

I'm disappointed about the PC handheld performance. It runs a lot better on the switch 2 but it's more expensive than the PC version and it doesn't look as good as PC in docked mode.
Was quite looking forward to this, but some of the voice acting in the trailer is nauseatingly twee. Put me right off.
Might still give it a go.
@themightyant That was my first thougth as well, I cannot stand the voice acting in this trailer.
HD2D is not tired. It just needs different developers giving it chance.
@Ainu20 It's adults putting on whiny baby voices, so off putting. Nobody actually sounds like that, why are they directed to do it. Maddening. Would rather no VA than this.
@Ainu20 @themightyant It's got a Japanese voice option if that helps.
I don't know if I'm just getting old, but I seriously struggle with English dubs in Japanese games (specifically RPGs) these days. I think Dragon Quest 11 was the last dub I genuinely liked.
@ShogunRok I'm generally the same, unless it's really well directed and acted like the FF7 remakes. Knowing that this has a Japanese option does help.
I'm getting it but gonna go for the switch 2 version. Seems a perfect combo.
@ShogunRok is playing in the future! You played DQ 12???
@3Above "is playing in the future"
Yeah seriously @ShogunRok how did you mess that up? You had 1 job.😉 Maybe the 5 year old trailer made you think you've already played it? 😂
I don't like 2D-HD so have never played a game in that style. I did get through very pixelated Sea of Stars w/ my wife and kid so if this has or gets couch co-op I'll give it a try.
Edit: Watched the trailer, forgot how good this looks. I really hate multiple time periods and characters etc but maybe it turns out OK? There does seem to be some weird 2nd player assist character but that's not co-op, not really. We'll give the demo a try but that sprite is a little too Nintendo nagging for my liking. But maybe.
@ShogunRok It does and it doesn't. It's usually better than the English dub, but i'd almost prefer to just read it than have a voice and not understand it. But it's good to know it's an option.
Yes JRPGS in particular often have the worst English dubs. Whiny American adults pretending to be children or teens. I hate it with a passion. Probably my #1 pet peeve in gaming, ruins many games.
I don't think you were meant to let us know you've actually PLAYED Dragon Quest 12 But assuming you meant DQ11, yes the localisation of that game - and generally that series since DQ8 - has been amazing. But maybe I am biased with all the British voices.
Dear Square Enix employee who has just been ambushed by this long comment while innocently scrolling — hello, and congratulations on your taste in employers (and websites!).
As a devoted fan of your work spanning decades, I come bearing an unsolicited business proposal: hire a naming consultant. A good one. Maybe two.
I say this with love, but "Triangle Strategy" is not a name — it's a geometry homework assignment. "Octopath Traveler" sounds like a GPS or dating app for octopuses. And whatever this game is called, I had to check three times and I'm sure I am forgetting it right know as I'm typing.
Your games are gorgeous, epic, and emotionally devastating in the best ways. They deserve names people can say out loud without feeling like they're failing a pop quiz.
And while we're here — a gentle word about your studio names. "Business Unit 1." The intensity. Somewhere out there, a poet is crying. Even "Tokyo RPG Factory" sounds like a place where dreams are manufactured on a conveyor belt by people in hard hats. I believe you can do better. I believe in you.
I am not available. I have a life, commitments, and a perfectly good job, thank you very much. But if you can match my current salary — and perhaps throw in a modest relocation package and early access to your next title — I could be persuaded to become suddenly, surprisingly available.
Ball's in your court. My thesaurus is standing by. And I promise — pinky promise — that I will never let a shape, a colon or a slash near a title again.
Have your people call my people. (It's just me. Please call me.)
Didn't it already have a demo? I'm sure I played it already. Is this a different one?
@Dalamar Definitely was not clear in the article, but yes, new demo. From the YT video: "Play the newly released Prologue Demo for free!"
@themightyant @rjejr @3Above You saw nothing.
I’ll try it out but with how many other games there are ahead of it it seems like this won’t be plated anytime soon whether I liked it or not. Too much to choose from now days.
@Nei I couldn't possibly agree more with this.
Square stumbled on absolute gold with Final Fantasy and everything since has been dreadful.
@ShogunRok meaning of the word "Final" still eludes them.
@Nei Brilliant! had me rolling. You've even made me question whether "Chrono Trigger" was ever a good name.
If I may also add to your proposal:
Dear Square Enix, in addition to hiring Nei, can you hire the same localisation company that does Dragon Quest, Ni No Kuni (1), or Xenoblade for all your RPGs, and failing that realise that what the USA may accept as voice talent may not be what other English speaking countries deem acceptable. Please and thank you.
@ShogunRok What do you mean, you didn't love "Infinity strash"? That was truly inspired. The word "Strash" in particular — which sounds like what happens when you combine a struggle with a crash — really captures the essence of, well, something. I'm sure.
@Nei They still resent Nintendo for changing Chronicles of the Plumber to Super Mario RPG.
@Gbarsotini That was the actual reason they moved FFVII to Sony's hardware.
@Nei You've just reminded me of that new Dragon Quest mobile game, delightfully named Dragon Quest Smash/Grow.
What are they doing over there?!
Kingdom Hearts has entered the Bad Naming Convention chat....
@rjejr I'm so desperate for ANY news on DQ 12 that I'm willing to believe @ShogunRok has a secret demo that he's sneaking feedback to Square Enix on, including notes on their bizarre relationship with "/ :" and unrealistic sales expectations. 😅
Kinda tired of 2D-HD games
Any chance for another TWEWY game
Or parasite eve something
Removed - unconstructive
@3Above If I were putting out a new JRPG and had a secret demo for people to play @ShogunRok would be my guy. Easily correctable typos aside. 😁
I mean they have to be showing off DQ12 soon. I mean maybe they're waiting to get FF7 PT3 out of the way but that's a whole different thing so they really shouldn't wait. June should be hoping.
@rjejr Getting my Clown costume ready for the June 2nd State of Play!
