Sony is currently sending out multiple waves of emails and PSN notifications to PS5 users in the UK and Ireland, reminding them to verify their age in order to continue using communication features like text-based messaging and voice chat.
This whole age verification thing was announced back in April, with PlayStation asking people to complete one of three verification methods. You can do a facial scan, use an existing form of ID, or have a message sent to your mobile phone number.
The announcement didn't go down well, with many UK and Ireland residents already up in arms over the government's push for an age-verified internet. There have been serious concerns over data harvesting and security.
Despite this continued backlash, age verification will be enforced on PS5 starting from next month in the UK. For Ireland, it's happening "later" in the year, with no official window given.
So, this is essentially Sony trying to make sure everyone knows the score ahead of time. I'd actually forgotten all about it until I got about three different email reminders and daily notifications on my PS5 over the last half a week or so.
You can visit PlayStation's official page on age verification through this link. It's got all of the info you need.
