Update []: Following the leaked screenshots (see below), @EvilLeeker has now shared several minutes of gameplay footage of the unannounced Worms game.
As previously noted, the game is a Worms take on the turn-based tactics formula most will know from XCOM. Your turn has you using each of your units to move to new positions on a grid and then use abilities or weapons against the enemy team.
Stages appear to be small in scale, but still feature destructible environments. Certain attacks have unique effects like knockback or stun.
When a level is complete, you can spend coins on various upgrades. It's not made clear, but these upgrades suggest to us the game may have a roguelike structure to it.
The footage all but confirms the game's existence; hopefully an official announcement isn't far off.
Original Story: The Worms series has been around for a long time, and even though it's not as prevalent as it used to be, Team 17 is still keeping the franchise alive on PS5.
It appears as though the studio is working on a new Worms title, which shouldn't come as much of a surprise, but if this leak is to be believed, it's steering things in a new direction.
According to someone calling themselves Evil Leeker man, a new Worms game, codenamed Project Arrakis, is currently undergoing playtesting.
Funnily enough, the first leak came in response to the seemingly fake Assassin's Creed leak:
The leaks show screenshots of this unannounced game, as well as a shot of the Steam details that give it a little more credibility.
It would appear the game's title is Worms Galactic Tactics, and from the shots leaked thus far, it seems to be an XCOM-style, 3D, turn-based tactics game.
Given that Worms is already a turn-based strategy title, albeit in 2D and with free movement, this seems like a sidestep that makes a lot of sense.
That's if this is legitimate, of course; the source of this leak is ropey at best. However, with numerous screenshots out in the open, we're inclined to believe it.
We're not far away from the video game calendar's favourite month for announcements. Summer Game Fest is already hyping itself up. This apparent new Worms game may be close to being announced; we'll have to wait and see.
What are your thoughts? Do you like the sound of a Worms game in the mould of XCOM? Is this leak real? Tell us in the comments section below.

Damn, there goes Keighley’s “one more thing”.
Worms is still more fun than most modern games
If real, been waiting for this for a long time, I loved Worms 3D and Mayhem, Forts was decent too. Great games!
Closest you can get now is Ultimate Mayhem on Steam since the 360 marketplace is gone and it’s not playable on Series X. If anyone reading is interested it’s currently on sale at a bargain $3.
I would definitely buy it even though I don't care for the main series. I love regular tactics games.
@BrokenByTheScream played the hell out of Forts when it released. Loved it. But that's probably the last time I played a Worms game.
Played a lot of the campaign of Worms 4: Mayhem on the PS2, and quite a few couch co-op games. Gameplay was a bit clunky and required some getting used to, if they can streamline it I am all for a new one!
'That's if this is legitimate, of course; the source of this leak is ropey at best. However, with numerous screenshots out in the open, we're inclined to believe it.'
So let me get this straight...the leaker refers to the AC game leaking and wants to join the band wagon....the AC devs issue a statement about the leak being faked with AI pics...Worms is a game where the leak is 'ropey, at best' but you give it some credence because there's screenshots?
Where do you draw the line from being informative to being part of the problem?
I love the Worms series, with Worms Armageddon being a particular favourite. I'm not sold on it being 3D, the 2D graphics are kinda what makes the Worms series fun and unique. But, I'll wait to see if it is real, and then see what PushSquare think of it!
I’m ready for it.
I remember secretly loading Worms to computers in middle / high school. We would have large groups of people gathered around watching. Good times.
Only worms game I played was the multiplayer one what was free on plus around the time PS5 launched, was actually a lot of fun.
It would be really cool to see Worms make a comeback, I really enjoy a lot of the older games in the series.
The best 3D Worms so far is, for my money, not a Worms game but Hogs of War on the PS1. Great fun, same anarchic UK spirit. Was a bit complex to play compared to the immediacy of Worms though. (The best Worms game I'd take Armegeddon or World Party, both great. And Open Warfare 2 on DS is up there with them!)
This is taking a different tack to Worms 3D and Hogs of War, but that might help bring back the ease of play the 2D entries have? Either way I'm excited, Worms feels like it's been on hiatus forever!
Worms sucks in 3D - the 2D classic layout is still by far the best, like Worms 2: Armageddon on the PS3.
For me the best Worms so far has been WMD.
I would love to take that formula and add more dynamic landscapes with different materials acting differently depending on how they are interacted with i.e. grass and trees blowing depending on the wind direction, block based walls with Angry birds style destruction physics, rock face landslides or snowfall avalanches. Please also bring back the water from Battlegrounds but enhance it with a more modern game engine to include things like tidal waves triggered by high yield weapons.
Lastly individual customisation for team members.
Yep that would be a good start but it doesn't sound like that' what we gonna get.
@Grackler Hogs of war was brilliant, and Rik Mayall really put his all into it. I do like the sound of this new Worms game. Worms mixed with XCOM sounds like a match made in heaven
Best Worms games imo, just 2:
Never liked the 3D games, the 2D titles were the franchise's best (and still are).
Worms 1 I got with my PS1 in 1997 and me and 2 brothers stayed up from 8pm till 4am playing the game against each other the ninja rope was banned though.
Worms Armageddon was the pinnacle of the series with the Holy Hand Grenade and Concrete Donkey
Loved all the Worms games, to various extents. The Worms 3D titles got way too much hate - they were amazing (but different).
Few games today even attempt the level of destructible landscape that's always been a mainstay of Worms, 2D or 3D.
Another Worms game, fair.
After looking at the series was surprised how many there are.
I haven't bothered to get into them but they seem for strategy games and party game fun. As much as they offer in them really.
When will Sony bring back Lemmings?
Still Worms has a place
Now, also the title was leaked:
Worms + Rabbids
Given we are unlikely to ever get an xcom 3, anything vaguely xcom-like will have my attention.
I'm always interested in any turn-based tactics game, but I find that very few of them really scratch the xcom itch.
I do have a soft spot for Mutant year zero, gears tactics and even the first Mario + Rabbids (it's breezy fun and gets extra points for having co-op). All three I felt had a strong identity and played to their unique wrinkles rather well.
I'd imagine a Worms tactics game to lean more towards the casual end like M+R, which would probably make the most sense and seems to bear out looking at those screenshots.
Still, the one I'm really looking forward to is the Star Wars one.
Love both, but hope the difficulty shows mercy.
Haven't played a worms game in years but have fond memories of the 3D ones on PS2. Used to play with my friend and turn up the modifiers so weapons were more destructive. I liked to wait until one of his worms was in a tower or on a tall hill and fly a worm over to him on a one way trip and drop a holy hand grenade, good times.
