The rumours and leaks might have spoiled the surprise, but the next game from Santa Monica Studio is official: it'll be a Faye-focused God of War game called God of War Laufey.
The studio revealed the new PS5 instalment in a 23-minute gameplay showcase, all of which you can watch above. In a PlayStation Blog post, it's said the title is "coming soon" and is available to wishlist now on PS5.
Here's the story setup:
Death was supposed to be the end, but for Laufey (Faye), warrior and wife to Kratos, a new adventure is just beginning. Awakening unexpectedly in a strange land after her funeral, Faye discovers the plans she put in place to protect Kratos and Atreus are now at risk. To save the ones she loves, Faye must fight through the afterlife of the gods — the Everywhen — where ruthless gods from across mythology vie for power in a land overflowing with dangerous magic.
As for the combat this time around, it's described as "intimate" and "brutal". It's been designed to feel like any other God of War experience in its fight scenes, but Laufey takes on a more movement-based and fluid system.
"Combining the movement and fluidity of the Greek era with the Norse era’s approach to world-building and close ties with characters — we’ve crafted an experience that has given our team incredible opportunities to take exciting creative swings, while staying true to the pillars of the God of War series," is what's said on the PlayStation Blog.
The voice cast is as follows:
- Faye — Deborah Ann Woll
- Phranque (the cube) — Jack Quaid
- Rue — Perlina Lau
You can learn more about how Faye came to be the main character of God of War Laufey in the video below:
"On behalf of everyone at Santa Monica Studio and all our partners working on God of War Laufey, thank you so much for watching the announcement video. We appreciate all the support fans have shown this series over the last two decades and hope you enjoy what we’ve got coming next!"

Sony Santa Monica are just so so good at making games.
Everything from the art design, to the combat, to the character models to the soundtrack were just top class. This looks sensational
Also, I wish this never got leaked. I blame myself for clicking on the articles but having this as a full on surprise would have been so much better.
Mid 2027 is my guess.
Great first showcase of the game. Enjoy the fact all this appears to be happening simultaneously during God Of War 2018 & Ragnarok
Ok i'll just get this out of the way....GoW without Kratos is like Tomb Raider without Lara or Metroid without Samus 😐
Absolutely sucks that this got leaked. No wonder Barlog was so annoyed.
So the game looks good but at the same time this doesn’t look like God of War to me. Nothing from the original series is here anymore. From the gameplay style to the tone and writing, even the main character is different now. It’s become the Triggers Broom of Siony franchises.
Deborah Ann Woll though 😍😍😍 Looks fantastic though not sold on the writing with the cube and sword characters. Combat looked incredible though and the visuals are a massive leap from Ragnarok.
heh. kinda wished I hadn’t bailed when the presentation started. Will watch later.
I know this is fantasy but my brain is still struggling with that cube! Looks good though...
At first I was optimistic but the more I see the more I got the "WTF!?". I hated the cube especially. Art design looks weird(main two enemy was great). Combat doesn't look very fun too.
Maybe when I get the chance to play it grows on me but as a first impression I can't believe this is Cory Barlog's new game and the reason Ragnarok was not as good as it could be. Jeez.
Finally: Name sucks.
Like the combat, the graphics and art design. However, it is 5 min of gameplay followed by 10 mins of cutscenes and qte events. And the vibe is of Marvel’s Thor movies. It seems it will retain the problems of Ragnarok…
Removed - unconstructive
This is exactly what I thought the game would look like after the leak (complimentary) it's great to see jumping and aerial combat make a comeback.
@ShogunRok Totally agree. The beginning with the story of GOW 2018 shifting to Faye would have broken the internet.
What does soon mean, though?
@Jireland92 Its a spin off dude relax. We're getting remakes of the OG Trilogy and God of War 6 is no doubt coming next gen. Kratos is going no where, hell he's even in this game in some form.
I think this would’ve hit harder if the leaks hadn’t come out beforehand, but the game still looks amazing. It’s a day one purchase for me.
Is Jack Quaid the cube??? Sounds very like Hughie from The Boys. Looks gorgeous and that game play looked fantastic. Wasn't overly hyped for another GOW atm, but that fast paced combat got me
I can't wait the combat looks f....great prefect game to end a top tier SOP
@Lembit Bet you can't even tell us what Sweetbaby is and does.
So this was the reason Ragnarok felt so rushed with mystery boxes sprinkled throughout, the mask seems to be central for this narrative, and while gameplay looks amazing I find it hard to be overly excited for 2028 games…
@DennisReynolds the article says this is the next mainline title.
Looks good , although nothing we haven't seen before. Kinda sad there are no Sony franchise with male lead as of now, outside of Marvel.
@Lembit
Oh dear god, I just can’t…
@ShogunRok
I'll admit if this didn't leak it would still have a big shock value.
@Lembit here we go again with a woke bs I literally said this some days ago
Go touch some grass intergalactic and now this
This guys literally see Female MCs like the plague is so sad
I hate Nate for leaking it. Looks absolutely awesome.
Looks absolutely stunning. Expected a focus solely on Egyptian mythology but a mix is just as interesting (if they pull it off). The combat looks incredible. I wonder how involved Cory is, since Ariel Lawrence is noted as Game Director.
Looks great and I didn't know it was leaked so I was surprised.
I thought the combat looked pretty good, game looks very solid overall. The Cube seems entirely out of place, kinda wish it wasn't there, maybe i'll be won over.
@Jireland92 Yeah but its still a spin off focusing on Faye. Think like how Star Wars Rogue One is still a mainline SW film but is also a spin off focusing on other things.
@SuperSilverback He is! Confirmed in the PS blog post.
Proof greed ruins everything. Zero reason to shoehorn this into the GoW franchise. Could have easily been a new franchise to build. 🙄
@SuperSilverback yeah I also thought that was Jack. I also agree with all those mentioning the leak. This would have had way more impact without it.
I think this looks amazing.
And it's clearly a spin-off.
No wonder Kratos fall in love to her, Now i am in love too, I love all the family, Wife husband and son.
@Swandivetotheasphalt you can't expect more from this ppl
@DennisReynolds Not a good comparison, we’re getting this instead of another Kratos game not in addition to, I’m not saying it’s a bad thing but we’re definitely not getting another game with Kratos for a long, long time, perhaps why they decided to start remaking the OG trilogy earlier this year.
@Swandivetotheasphalt some people just dont seem able to enjoy good old fashioned games anymore can they. Always has to be something doesn't it.
Loved it, would have been a jaw-dropper minus the leak. I hope soon means soon
@DennisReynolds that doesn’t make any sense. How can you be a spinoff and a mainline title at the same time.
If this takes place in the Afterlife of the Gods.....will we see the Greek God's i wonder
It looks great and I get to play as a bad ass Deborah Ann Woll. Sold.
@Moby I mean, we dont know what the story is. The fact its his wife probably means it ties in with everything else. Could be what leads kratos into the Egyptian timeline of gods with one of them in there.
Edit: The Egyptian God of War no less.
I’m completely sold. The direction, the music, the combat, the imagination…the talking cube and ribbons 😄 Day one buy.
I want to melt that stupid cube and incinerate the sword ribbons for their voice direction and writing. Tonally jarring doesn't even cover it.
That aside, it looks promising. I like that Faye's combat toolkit seems to feel pretty distinct from Kratos, while still carrying a familiar flow and weight to it.
Not at all interested in a God of War game without THE God of War.
I was so relieved to see this, why? Because the game isn't about Atreus 😮💨 thank goodness I will definitely play this on day one!
As a hardcore God of War fan. I simply can’t get into this color palate and the cube. It’s just odd. GOW 2018 was one of my favorite PS games ever. I gave it a 10 out of 10. But i just ain’t feeling this one. Wolverine looked fun and bloody so i have one game to buy on my PS5 Pro in 2026 at least. Happy to see so many like it tho, that is good for the health of the franchise.
@Jireland92 Because its the next entry with the same type of budget of a Kratos lead game but its spin off in that its focusing on another character away from the core games. Kratos is the lead of the series unless you seriously think they have dropped Kratos in favour of Faye?
@crossbit A talking ribbon isn't new to Norse Myth.
@IllusiveMan We're getting remakes of the OG games, had a Kratos prequel spin off this year and God of War 6 is no doubt coming next gen for PS6 with a new Myth.
Chinese combat (animation) style for a Norse character, a talking jelly cube!! The only interesting thing about compared to the last 2 GoW is jumping and aerial attacks but not feeling it!
This is the 3rd game with non stop talking side character as a comedy relief!! Ragnarok was a huge downgrade comapred to GoW 2018 (it wasn't the best) when it comes to writing and I don't think this one will fair better!
@LivewireCLS I'm really curious about that as the two writing leads are in the video, and I thought Corey was main writer/creative lead?
EDIT: I've noticed that other video stating Ariel Lawrence is the Game Director (not watched the vid as it won't play for me). Corey is described as Studio Head of Creative. So now I'm curious if 'his game' is actually something else being done at the studio or he isn't directing a specific game himself anymore and just overseeing all projects at the studio.
@Yor-sama
Why do you assume I have a problem with the MC? I dont. I do have a big problem with the made-up weird godfall smelling setting and jello cubes as sidekick that bumps enemies in their behind.
@DennisReynolds
I could but my comment would just be removed. Ask your nearest chatbot
It looks great. No wonder Kratos fallen in love with Faye. A redhead who looks gorgeous and also can fight? Kratos you lucky b*
The Everywhen setting also looks interesting. There's Egypt goddess Sekhmet and Mongolian god of war Begtse. It feels like it opens up to a lot of potential for future GoW games.
But...the talking jelly cube kinda pull me out from the serious vibe when it helps Faye in combat. I mean, i get it they want some companion that works similar to Atreus. But a talking cube? 😂
Nonetheless i'm still quite hype.
Removed - inappropriate
This is what Karen does whilst Matt Murdock rots in prison
This game really intrigued me.
Maybe I am missing something, but I was expecting this (long rumoured) game to be based on the time period before she met Kratos.
The fact it runs parallel to 2018 interests me far more, but it does introduce lore pitfalls.
As someone who loved GOWR, I'm optimistic, though the weird jelly cube looked really out of place - hopefully their is something more to this character.
I can't even put into words what happened to God of War...
But slowly, I'm starting to realize why they announced the GoW Trilogy.
If I wanted a companion cube, I'd play Portal.
(I'll see myself out.)
It’ll be great, but it’s also another third person melee action game. We need more differentiation between big budget first party games. Also: terrible name.
But in all seriousness, I avoided prior GoW games over the included s*x stuff, so I'm not sure if this is par for the course, but the intro felt like a contemporary Marvel/super hero film with the dialogue, VA, etc. In general, though, good for them in trying something different, though.
She looked good like; reeeeeally good til she start leppin about with a square lump of jello sidekick aide
@DennisReynolds Never said it was, mate. It's how the ribbon's talking that's grating, not the fact that it can.
And then we have such mythological figures as Laufey and Sekhmet...
...flanked by the talking jello-cube, FRANK. Urgh. Melt it.
I hope this ties into an Atreus centered follow up, because there was a lot left unfinished at the end of GOWR, and Ragnarok felt like a passing of the torch game.
Game looks awesome, but the name is not doing it for me.
@Lembit So you can't tell me because you don't actually know what they do and are just going by what you're fav grifter Youtuber told you to think?
Holy ***** just watched the whole thing that looks amazing. Sony single player games are just on a different level compared to pretty much everyone else in the industry like god damn
@MasterChiefWiggum Terrible name why? Laufey is her name.
I thought this looked like a bit of a dud. It doesn't help that I wanted Santa Monica to do something - anything - else, but even taking the fact that I was disappointed by the leak, I felt more disappointed actually seeing it. It just looks like a slightly faster God of War with more hair.
I just want something new. Like the first time we saw Horizon. A new idea. New characters. A new story to sink our teeth into. I'm sure this will be fine but it didn't move the needle for me at all.
And I know I'm not alone in this one - what the hell is going on with the talking sword and cube? It's like they've wandered in from another game. Cringed more than once. Dreadful stuff, and actually derailed an already quite boring trailer for me.
@Lembit lool says the guy that brought sweetbabyink into the conversation in the first place
Not a big fan of this direction. This looks like more ragnarok and ragnarok just did not hit as good as GOW 2018 for me. Happy for those who are excited to play this, but personally i'm only interested in playing as Kratos.
From a gameplay perspective, this looks incredible. From a "what the hell is a talking cube named Frank doing in this game and also who the hell thought naming a game Laufey was a good idea" perspective, ....yikes.
I'm a fan of the God of War series but have zero interest in playing a game that doesn't star Kratos. Hopefully this is just a one off and it's back to business as normal for the one after. Unfortunately that's probably a good 5+ years away considering there's the remake of the original trilogy that really wasn't needed. It's cool but takes up time and resources.
Definitely looks interesting
@DennisReynolds I've never played the games, but that part seems fairly obvious? Faye... Laufey... I assume this was mentioned in prior games?
@Gamer83 I wished we had more god of wars game but with different gods Kratos is great I would love to play with Thor or Zeus
@wildcat_kickz that's her name 😒 duh
@SuplexingTrains Laufey in Norse Myth is Loki's Mother. The games shorted it to Faye most likely to hide the Loki twist. Kratos knows her as Faye but it was revealed the Giants referred to her as Laufey.
Looks great, looks better than the last GoW!
This also just proves leaks are usually for real!
@johncalmc here some talking swords from mythology Kullervo's Sword and Sharur
It looks solid but I'll probably wait for a sale. I'm just not really interested in GOW without Kratos.
@IronCrow86 I mean it does not hurt to at least try something new.
Looks incredible but im sick and tired of seing the real faces of actors and actresses in videogames. Use their voice and performances but please change the fcking faces man
Sold. Add to cart. ☑️
Looks great, hope this is out by next year and not later. Surprised not to see 2027.
I have zero problems looking at Deborah Ann Woll for many gameplay hours lol.
Why should all gods be humanoid? Something outside of our realm, outside of our understanding, should absolutely be weird. I genuinely love the swing with the cube and ribbon and can’t wait to learn more.
My prediction is that Kratos becomes playable midway through GOW: Laufey in a twist similar to GOW 2018 when we got the blades of chaos midway through.
@KawakiisaFraud
Nobody was asking for a remake of the original trilogy, though. The only way it makes sense to me is if all future God of War games will no longer be starring Kratos, which given how Sony is going with its legacy IP these days, wouldn't shock me.
This game will be a tough sell without Kratos.
Annoying talking sword and stupid cube following you. How can anyone think that was a good idea? I think you need an IQ below mustard to work there now.
The game looks cool, I'm all for playing as Faye and the story synopsis sounds good, just not big on the yapping cube and sword.
The game looks amazing, definitely a day one buy…
But the cube is a hard sell, it looks out of place. It’s likely to go through a redesign - maybe a cube that can transform into any form, including humanoid - before the game releases. The ribbons & sword are fine, no complaints🤷♂️
"Gameplay," eh?
It looks like a Saturday morning cartoon version of Forespoken with the patented Sony Third-person Ubergame walk and talk.
These baddies look like they're straight out of Pirates of Dark Water or Mummies Alive.
@DennisReynolds remember when AC Shadows got some architecture and historical thingies wrong, and the usual suspects got up in arms about just how crass and uncaring Ubisoft was? That is literally the type of thing a firm like Sweetbaby is hired to weed out, lol.
It is so tiring.
Meet the cast video
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=uKMCqyeBWmU
Didn't know the cube voiced by Jack Quaid aka Hughie 😆
@Gamer83
Actually, there's plenty of GoW fans who asked for trilogy remake and they were angry when last year Sony didn't announced the remake.
And Kratos definitely still as the main lead for future games. The only thing they will probably change is the voice / mocap actor. Christopher Judge is 61 years old and the time GoW 6 come out, he probably already retired from acting.
Why does she look so ugly I guess being made by a western studio she got the ugly treatment reminds me of Star Wars Outlaws.
Now this is definitely a good reason to save and pick up a ps5 pro😅 the games oozes quality👌🏼👍🏼
Really killer to see they got Deborah Ann Woll to play the titular character - she's AWESOME! And the gameplay looks absolutely AMAZING!! Not sure about some of the additional characters but this is a definite 'get' for me.
Calling that “Gameplay” is generous
@Justinbeebs Really good hair physics though.
I thought it looked great, looking forward to it.
The 'side character' idea is 'fine' the other mythologies is a cool idea.
The cutscenes are very drawn out, what we trying to compete with Kojima here? Just make MOVIES then, or make all the cutscenes a thing on streaming services as a movie. Like why is this a thing.
Long drawn out cutscenes, the odd QTE, attention spans are short apparently? Do devs/pubs/shareholders make any sense these days?
God of War is not a Quantic Dream style game, so why the long cutscenes?
I still never liked the strafe approach of God of War 2018 or Ryse Son of Rome started back in 2013, never have but if it works I guess.
The game has potential and it's their 'big IP' they have to push but I don't know.
IF the talking sword is good or the slime cube for puzzles/combat sure, IF they are just a walking talking waste of space then what a waste of a character. I'll continue to think up gameplay ideas, as the devs won't they want playable movies it seems.
Not like this medium wasn't built on 'game focused ideas' not fit in with another medium to be ',playable' and because many audiences are stupid so we had to dumb games down for them as they are too stupid, have the attention span of a fish and can't understand basic things told to them.
Still there was a fair amount in this despite how good it was and how some parts were a bit confusing or a bit too long and drawn out that don't need to be.
Also the Norse saga is one thing but the intro battle this will be, sigh, because we really need another 'tough boss' character, what they need to follow their own formula to a T too. XD Wow just like Star Wars and others they have to repeat the same pacing, not match the same level, but have the same story beats/pacing, wow how hilarious is that.
It's just sad to see games/movies/TV shows/books do that. Sometimes we want things 'on the same level or bit more to characters, the world building (if it justifies it not just 'more for the sake of more that's not even developed well yet/planned out') or more expanding of calm moments or other stuff' but no we need more high level moments apparently or the same formula. It really is sad.
I have no interest in this game anyways, but from what it 'offers' I think it has some fair ideas.
@Jireland92 There's more here from the original games than meets the eye. The ribbons on the sword seem to play similarly to Kratos' blades of chaos with their wide sweeping attacks, and the jumping and juggling of enemies is more reminiscent of the original games compared to the Norse games. The fighting design language is absolutely there. It's just adapted to a different, faster paced fighting style.
@SuntannedDuck2 I agree; the cut scene was way too long. It's about 10 minutes from the point Fey is captured to the point where you start fighting. Sure, there are a few button prompts in the middle to escape the cage, but it did stagger the pace a little too much.
The dialogue was my biggest issue , she sounds too much like something out of Marvel , wasnt she supposed to be a big reason why kratos matured and became wiser and calmer ? How come shes crazier than him ?
I’m excited about the faster combat. Looking at the back of Kratos’ bobbing, bald head as he plodded along could get tiresome after the 40 hour mark. At least this head will have hair to look at. Nice change of pace.
This just looked amazing! I love the character, the fantasy style, the art design, the combat, the world. Best 20 mins of any state of play. Ever! (Imo)
@Ultrasmiles There is a definite Marvel feel to things. Even the logo somehow gives one that sense (I’m not a Marvel guy so I couldn’t exactly say why).
@KawakiisaFraud That’s my suspicion too: give those players who don’t like this direction something to look forward to. Personally, I can’t wait for both.
judging by all the reactions i seen on you tube this god of way game will be a huge best seller..
@For-Kier wrong the opposite will happen
kratos will appear numerous times in this game but not as a playable character in fact he will appear in a boss battle vs faye..
didnt Santa Monica learn their lesson with god of war ascension that was a prequel that didnt do well and this is a prequal with a side character and not even the god of war i dont get it.
Tbh I am a little conflicted. I am looking forward to this but I guess I am disappointed that this is all that SMS were working on in the background. All those years of anticipation for a new IP or whatever for this? Welp time will tell.
@Bingoboyop It is odd, sure we could assume they only make God of War and the rumours of thinking they made a new game.
If to have rumours to mislead (either fans thought it or it was supposed to be and changed over time or to mislead, either of the 3 is possible).
Or they did and Sony said nope make it God of War branded. Like some Starfox Adventures type thing at the last second of Dinosaur Planet change it to have this branding/characters instead (compared to those that did and removing the branding/characters that others would have of licensed movies/TV shows/comics, etc). Like what is this?
At least it isn't some Retro studios 'we want to make other IPs, no your making Donkey Kong and Metroid and your other projects gets shelved. I don't think many studios in the industry or 1st party studios encounter that as much as they do.
Sony wanting a remake of the trilogy and the new God of War game to be there. Almost like Tomb Raider getting it's 1 remake (instead a trilogy) and a new game.
I think some companies want their cake and to eat it too. They want enough covered of IPs of games, other mediums, merch and more preference out there, that they know do well so they sprinkle as many options of them as possible around teams of a single studio or multiple studios to fit in, it's absolutely hilarious.
They all end up the same strategy and if we don't like an IP not just a direction we just look at them and go, so why should I support them then? Their strategies are all the same just if I can tolerate the IP or not. Sigh.
Jar-Jar-Binks-ass side character.
Why? Why did it need a Marvel comic-relief yapping Jello cube named Frank?
If Santa Monica Studios were to actually attempt to replace Kratos as the main protagonist—as some Fake Fans/Tourists on the internet have been demanding for years now—then I can tell you right now that Sony would lose its biggest IP. God of War stands or falls with Kratos!
Currently, the trailer stands at 138 likes versus 64K dislikes. While this isn't a complete disaster like Intergalactic which racked up over 300K dislikes it bears repeating: GoW is Sony's biggest IP.
As far as I'm concerned, one thing is certain: aside from Wolverine, Sony no longer has any real system sellers for the PS5.
Intergalactic, and Laufey have the potential to become the biggest financial flops in Sony's history of single-player games. And we all know that Nishino will show no mercy if these games fail to be financially successful.
@trev666 Ascension was a failure but Chains of Olympus and Ghost of Sparta was a success. So one failed doesn't mean they shouldn't do a prequel for Norse saga.
Beside, Ascension failed not because it's a prequel but because it didn't add much to the overall lore, some weird / questionable decisions with gameplay (lack of weapons variety and restrictive combat locked behind Rage meter), bad MP mode, and technical issues (bugs, bad camera angle, etc).
@kcarnes9051 those are pretty surface level things though, things that are in most action games. The things that gave God of War its unique identity just aren’t there imo. The tone is probably the biggest offender because it doesn’t feel like GOW at all.
@DennisReynolds oh I don’t think they replaced Kratos at all, I realise this is a side game like the PSP prequels. It’s just that this feels like the ultimate culmination of the GOW series becoming something wholly different than what it started as. Something that began with the Norse games. I didn’t like those, they weren’t the GOW I loved, and I don’t I’ll get it back. Those remakes might help but that remains to be seen.
@DennisReynolds excellent analogy! I wouldn’t have had a Faye spin off as my first choice for the main entry, but I still have very high hopes for it. Santa Monica don’t exactly have a habit of making poor games.
I hope its less open world, much less puzzles and the story is alot tighter and dosnt out stay it's welcome as much as ragnarok.
This looks a little mid for me but I'll definitely give ago at somepoint
GOW 2018 is still easily the best
OK I'll just stick to nomal God of War games on PS2/3...
Hopefully sooner rather than later. I liked GoW 2018 more than I thought I would, and I loved Rganarok - which I personally feel improved on everything from 2018 except maybe the tight elegance of the storytelling.
I´m planning to replay Ragnarok at some point near the end of the year, so it´d be lovely to have this come out not too long after.
@Jireland92 weapons like the blades of chaos and the ribbons are absolutely not in most actions games. Air juggling was an integral component to the original games, and hand waving it away because other games do it ignores that other games use that mechanic in large part because the original GOW games popularized it, iterating on what Devil May Cry did but bringing in sweeping attacks for crowd control. This isn’t a surface level element. It’s a huge part of the original games identity along with QTE style cut scenes in the middle of battle. Furthermore, a hit combo meter has returned, and this new game leans more toward relentless fast attacks and building combos, just like the originals. But please tell me how all of these core game principles central to the original games is just surface level.
While it looks nice God of War without Kratos is like Mario Bros without Mario. I'm more interested in GoW remake trilogy.
'3 minutes of gameplay' which sucks and is exactly the reason I couldn't finish ragnarok, all the exposition and cutscenes slowly wore me down. if it is the same here, that is an easy skip for me
I will play it day one. Period.
Anyone can have an opinion, of course, but blaming developers for trying to do something with high quality, while you sit in your couch and think of ways to roast others' work... come on, we as a community can be better than that.
Looked awesome to me. It's like if Hellblade went through a GoW filter taking all the best bits of human mythology along with it and put an awesome actress front and centre of it all. Yes please.
I like the set up of combining mythologies, but I hope they don't go too scattergun with it. It was great really getting involved with the Greek and Norse mythologies, I hope we get similarly immersed in whoever rocks up in this game.
The sword and cube are a little grating though, they have pretty grating VA's and writing in the video - but still keeping an eye on this one.
While I would have loved the God of War franchise to have Kratos do some clean-up in the land of the Nile, Laufey's story is a very good alternative too.
There are quite a lot of unexplained pieces regarding Faye peppered around in the first 2 games, that I think this new title will clarify (in 1 sitting or more).
Her journey starts right alongside Kratos and son, and takes place in parallel in this Everplace, and maybe there are ways to connect with the normal realm.
Hopefully she'll be traveling around in time too, and preparing/influencing Kratos/Atreus journey in ways only faintly implied in the first 2 games.
Maybe Kratos will help her for a while, during the time he was trapped in the light of Alfheim, and remember nothing but the vision we saw in the first game... Maybe they'll even show what she did in The Crater region in Vanaheim, and the battle with Thor... who knows.
They nailed her face animations this time around, she looked kind of weird in some scenes in God Of War 2018.
The updated graphics really show.
Anyway, can't wait, maybe "coming soon" won't be Q4 next year...
I hope it's a ~20h long game tops, and it releases in Q1-Q2 2027.
Felt nothing like GOW to me almost had a Disney feeling to it! That is not a good thing! Visuals were stunning.
@Mike1 This is a spin-off just like Mario spin-off where Mario isn't the lead such as Luigi Mansion, Warioware, Princess Peach Showtime, Yoshi etc.
I went into this without the leaks. I knew something existed but not all of this!
Looks fantastic. Can't wait to step into the world of GOW again!
This is super awesome! Very excited!
Also, I never looked into leak. Have pretty low opinion of this kind of leakers.
I'm hyped, can't wait for this!!
@kcarnes9051 ok, but what about the fixed camera angles? Those were integral to the original series identity and we’re still stuck with the over the shoulder view. It’s also bold to assume the ribbons are in any way comparable to the blades of chaos with the extremely limited gameplay we’ve seen. Also didn’t see any combo meter in the gameplay so I don’t know where you’re getting that from.
Look I’m glad they’re bringing back some stuff, but it still doesn’t feel like GOW to me. The setting and tone are still off, honestly I think them moving away from Greek mythology was a mistake, and we still don’t know how the full game will play out. Jumping is back, which is great, but will we get actual platforming sequences. I hope so but that remains to be seen.
Good lord theres some miserable sods out there. Game looks good and fun. What more do you want from a video game.
@Weebleman god forbid we let people express their opinions.
You know when Sony are giving us a great game when all the haters come out the woodwork. Game looked fantastic and hopefully it does well so that we get more spin offs in the future.
@johncalmc
While this game looks interesting and the combat looks like tons of fun I too can't help but think I want something new from Santa Monica Studio akin to Guerilla Games' Horizon series.
Santa Monica Studio is amazingly talented and I would love to see what they could create if taken off of God of War for a while.
I'm speechless. This is trully awesome!! Can't wait!!
Visually beautiful, but bored the pants off me honestly. I'm still looking for them, they're around here somewhere....
@DennisReynolds I think you you’re just digging your hole deeper. This is the direction this series is taking and will influence the narratives of all future games. Kratos is GoW not his wife or son. This stinks.
@Vovander it's the literal opening of the game, of course it's going to have some cut scenes. Also have you played the original trilogy? You want to talk about QTEs. The combat looks very much like the old trilogy mixed with the new. Can't wait.
@DartLOD Yeah, they should just make only games starring Kratos. If you watched the director interview, there is a Kratos game coming so no, this isn't the future of the series. They are allowed to spread their wings a little.
20 minutes of cutscenes, with a few moments of gameplay.
And I already hate that damn cube.
I would have prefered, if she used ranged combat, instead of a sword. I'm bored of these cinematic games...
@YaFo Thank you. Jesus. People act like the studio is only allowed to make Kratos games. And a Kratos game is coming. They are just expanding the universe a bit.
Game looks good! Laufey is just as bad ass as Kratos
@Jireland92 QTEs were a staple of the original trilogy. You just want them to keep making the same game over and over?
@DartLOD We had a Kratos game this year, we're getting full remakes of the OG Trilogy and GoW6 has all but been confirmed. You're just salty you have to play as a woman, if this was a Thor game we all you would be hyped as hell. Cory has also said they aren't dropping Kratos they just wanted to explore something different, his quote was 'Kratos is the trunk of the tree while this game is a branch from it". I have facts and quotes from Cory backing me up you have nothing so maybe stop digging yourself.
@DennisReynolds lol I think you’re in your feels a little too much. I’m not salty I just think this game looks terrible so won’t be buying it. At the end of the day Santa Monica wants my money and all the other people like me’s money too. They aren’t getting it and it’s a problem for them not us.
@mvhess I agree with your first sentence.
Ha Huey from The Boys is the cube, that's one hell of a character change!
I'm here for the story so this is gonna be day 1. It will be nice to have a story from Faye's perspective because while she is spoken about in the previous games, we only have the perspective of Kratos and Atreus so I look forward to getting some context on Faye from Faye's perspective.
@PuppetMaster nope chains of Olympus sold about as well as ascension and ghost of sparta sold a third of what Olympus did
@DartLOD Nah you're salty otherwise you wouldn't make up rubbish. Me? I'm happy we're getting a great looking new game with Deborah Ann Woll as the lead.
this will not sell as well as a mainline god of war entry would have
I was worried about a GOW game without Kratos, but what was shown yesterday really sold me. This game is going to be great.
The dialogue felt very off to me. Like too modern and the characters pause too much when they speak. They also don't sound "present" in a dangerous situation, more like unrealistic internet comedy (i.e. when the ribbons speak and say "Wait! Not a good idea! Bad idea!" ... in a real emergency you don't speak that much and that 'cute,' you simply scream "STOP!!" over and over and hope the person stops).
@Jireland92 god forbid people realise they aren't forced to play these things.
@trev666 Chains of Olympus and Ghost of Sparta has much lower budget as a PSP game compare to Ascension as a PS3 game. Hence why Sony counted Ascension as a failure.
War of the Cube is going to be amazing!
@mvhess no I want the series to end. I’m at the point now where I’d rather see a series die than become something it isn’t.
@Moby Do you know why games and movies make nothing but sequels and reboots, despite all the people who constantly clamor for new and original IPs? Because a few times a year they make some truly new and original stuff and no one goes for it. Consumers are stupid and lazy, and therefore marketing must follow.
@dwayne91 You mean like Saros that just came out.
@Justinbeebs Ah yes Brad Pitt over here judging someone looks. In any case she is Deborah Ann Woll and looks exactly like her in real life.
You originally said “Nothing from the original series is here anymore.” I outlined multiple things that are being brought back from the originals that were absent in the Norse Saga. And now you’re like, “but what about the fixed camera angle?” Dude, your original statement was about NOTHING being present from the originals. That’s what I was addressing. Not every single element from the first games.
This game incorporates elements from both the Greek and Norse sagas because it’s in the afterlife of the gods and will likely have characters from both pantheons. It’s basically guaranteed we will see members of the Greek pantheon that Kratos killed, so put that in the column of similarities, as well.
Admittedly, I may have read wrong about the combo counter. But aerial juggling and combos are demonstrated as being present and the developers themselves have said that they’re pulling from the past games for combat.
This game is actually closer to the original games in combat than the Norse combat.
Fast, fluid combat style, ranged sweeping attacks, comboing and aerial juggling. It’s all there from the originals, just repackaged into a different character with her on uniqueness layered on.
This is an evolution of both sagas combined in gameplay principles.
@pharos_haven Saros isn't a franchise, so no I don't mean like Saros. I mean Sony's tentpole franchises.
