Uh oh! It appears the upcoming Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis has used some AI assistance during production, and naysayers of the tech aren't best pleased.
This is a remake of the original Lara Croft adventure from Crystal Dynamics and Flying Wild Hog, and it's now due for release in February of next year.
After the Steam page was updated with new details, a disclaimer about AI usage in the game has been discovered. It reads as follows:
"AI-assisted tools were used during development to support some early exploration and temporary development content. Any AI-assisted assets were either replaced or refined by humans in order to maintain the creative and artistic vision of the development team."

So, while it stops short of going into full detail, the statement makes it clear that AI tools were put to use, specifically in the early stages of development. Further to that, anything made using AI will be "replaced or refined", so the amount of AI stuff in the final game is likely to be very minimal.
However, generative AI in particular is very controversial when it comes to artistic endeavours, and I expect Legacy of Atlantis will catch some heat for this.
It's worth saying, though, that AI tools are commonly used in game dev for various tasks, and many studios are experimenting with the use of generative AI to varying degrees.
I think you're going to see more and more AI assistance in game production, at least for a while. That doesn't mean you have to like it, of course.
Hopefully we will hear a bit more about exactly how the team utilised these AI tools, to provide a bit more context beyond the fairly vague statement.
