The Witcher 4 Cyberpunk 2077

Cyberpunk 2077 may have gone on to become a commercial juggernaut, but it took the open world RPG years to get there, having finally overcome the damage that had been done by its brutally botched launch.

As you'd imagine, developer CD Projekt Red really doesn't want to repeat that mistake with The Witcher 4 — to the point where it's actively pointing out the company's 2077 failings.

In what was a surprisingly candid on-stage interview for Knowledge, joint CEO Michał Nowakowski reiterated that the team was "heartbroken" after seeing the initial 2020 release be torn to shreds.

CDPR's immediate response was to try and salvage its own reputation, which Nowakowski stated was its "biggest asset" — something it had built up over years of launching increasingly popular titles, like The Witcher 3.

Of course, the developer would spend the next several years delivering major updates for Cyberpunk, massively improving the experience before the arrival of Phantom Liberty, and version 2.00, which effectively transformed the game into something special.

Still, Nowakowski has strong feelings on the topic. He admitted: "I'm not 100 per cent convinced we went through the full redemption arc [...] I'm convinced that we lost the faith of some people indefinitely, and that's a fair thing."

He continued: "But I do hope we will be able to make it back – if not with The Witcher 4, then with whatever comes next."

While I am of the belief that CDPR did an awful lot to restore its reputation across the full Cyberpunk saga, I do think Nowakowski's right; there are people out there who simply won't have any faith in the studio's next game — at least not at launch.

The Witcher 4, then, has to hit the ground running. The last thing any developer needs is to be saddled with a reputation for consistent cock-ups.

To some extent, I think this is kind of what's happened with the likes of Bethesda — although not releasing a proper Elder Scrolls of Fallout game for well over a decade certainly factors into that argument.
