Update []:
Christopher Dring of The Game Business has provided a small piece of context for how well physical video games are selling in the UK.
If a game sold just 1,000 boxed copies in the UK last week, it would already be the ninth best-selling title. Last week, Pokémon Legends: Z-A was in that position while the new Star Fox remake was 10th. This provides us with a touch more context about how well even a newly released Switch 2 exclusive performed — it managed to shift 1,000 copies or less last week in the UK's physical market.
Original Story: According to new sales data from Circana director Mat Piscatella, only seven PS5 games have sold more than 100,000 physical copies in 2026.
In the week that ended 11th July 2026, just two PS5 titles managed to sell over 10,000 physical units during that seven-day timespan.
The two new statistics are eye-opening and highlight how poorly physical game sales are doing in the USA. They arrive as Sony announces plans to halt the production of PlayStation discs from January 2028, and provide further context as to why the company has made its decision and — at least so far — doesn't appear to be interested in backing down from it.
That is despite a very intense social media campaign from PlayStation fans that has seen all its posts bombarded with criticism and attacks — and now indie developers are getting caught in the crossfire.
Piscatella does not confirm what PS5 games have sold more than the stated 100,000 physical units, but you have to imagine some of them are the biggest releases of 2026 so far — the likes of Resident Evil Requiem, Crimson Desert, and 007 First Light.
