'It's a Relentless Onslaught': Wolverine PS5 Dev Responds to Unprecedented Criticism 1

I’m not exactly sure how and why it’s happened, but Marvel’s Wolverine has become the butt of all social media jokes.

Its crime? I’m honestly not entirely sure – it looks pretty good and the first round of previews have largely matched that sentiment.

But social media is awash with absolutely brutal commentary right now. And predictably, it’s not of the constructive kind.

One video, first posted in Spanish to 50k likes, and then amplified in English with the caption “God tier slander” for 70k more likes, compares footage of the new PS5 exclusive’s Sentinel boss battle to a sequence in PS2 game Ben 10: Protector of Earth.

Certainly, the Wolverine fight is not especially original, as a similar sequence has featured in various games, including all-time classics like the opening of God of War 2, where Kratos dukes it out with the Colossus of Rhodes. Hardly the end of the world.

Another video, with 20k likes, shows 15 seconds of footage of Logan running forward while someone holds a DualSense in front of the screen.

“Wolverine’s gameplay feels like that,” the caption reads, as the clip clearly shows the individual holding the up button on the analogue stick.

In a similarly reductive attempt at humour, a further clip with 42k likes overlays controller inputs on top of gameplay footage, with the player mashing R2 throughout. Who knew you needed to push buttons to play games?

I think all of these gags are trying to present the game as unoriginal and outdated with rote gameplay. I find all of them irksome, to be honest.

And it seems like it’s getting under Insomniac’s skin a little bit, too.

Veteran communications director James Stevenson wrote on X (or Twitter) that “the wild way” social media’s “algorithm amplifies and forces negativity upon you has me reconsidering my philosophy on telling devs to look or post here”.

He continued:

“It’s a relentless onslaught that I cannot believe is good for anyone’s mental health nor representative.”

So, what is happening here?

Well, I think this goes way beyond constructive criticism at this stage – there’s something much deeper at play.

It’s clear that Marvel’s Wolverine is going to be an adequate superhero adventure at its absolute worst, but these social media posts are attempting to frame it as a potential disaster.

Why?

Well, I think broadly speaking social media is intensely dissatisfied with PlayStation this generation, and Insomniac is taking the heat right now.

There’s a growing sentiment that Sony’s style of cinematic action game is getting stale, and whether or not you agree with that, I suspect some of that feeling is being used to completely misrepresent and undermine Marvel’s Wolverine here.

Furthermore, there’s also still anger at PlayStation’s decision to stop manufacturing physical games, and I think this style of humour is an attempt to downplay one of the platform holder’s biggest games of the year.

A quick look at the PS Store’s best-sellers list suggests none of this is having an impact, of course: it’s currently the third most pre-ordered game in the US, behind only GTA 6 and two versions of NBA 2K27.

I personally don’t expect Marvel’s Wolverine to be a Game of the Year contender in a crowded 2026 field. But I also think it’s absolutely fine for Insomniac – one of the generation’s best devs – to deliver a robust, enjoyable superhero story and nothing more.

If it exceeds those expectations, then that’d be extra nice.
