Update []: Well Dweller has now launched on the PS Store, and I thought it would be worth highlighting that the well-received Metroidvania actually costs less than expected — especially if you're a PS Plus user.
For the next two weeks, subscribers can get a 15% discount on the game, bringing the price down to £13.59 / $16.99. There's also a demo available if you want to try before you buy.
Original Story: What if I told you a new PS5 game with a Metacritic rating of 91 and an Opencritic score of 90 is coming out today?

Silent Hill: Townfall and Control Resonant are not officially releasing until Thursday, so what could it be? Well Dweller is that game, a Metroidvania experience from single developer Kyle Thompson.
You may remember his previous effort, Crypt Custodian, was a favourite of mine, and we named it the fourth-best indie game of 2024 in our GOTY deliberations that year. Thompson is now back with Well Dweller, and it is receiving so much critical acclaim that it's ranking as one of 2026's highest-rated titles.
After 16 critic reviews on Opencritic, it's got a score of 90 and 100% of reviewers recommend the game. In the website's chart, it's the fourth highest-rated game of 2026 so far. On Metacritic, Well Dweller has a rating of 91 for the PC version, though this is best on fewer verdicts.
Here is Well Dweller in action via its release date trailer:
The game is priced at £17.99 / $19.99 and launches for PS5 today. "Well Dweller is a dark fairy-tale metroidvania, full of charming characters living in a wretched kingdom. Play as Glimmer — a tiny bird armed with a matchstick — who must burn the wicked queen to save his family."
Loot Level Chill - 9.5/10
Well Dweller is one of the most polished and captivating Metroidvanias I've played in years, and even in this packed season it's a must play.
Worth Playing - 9/10
Well Dweller is an excellent Metroidvania. Its combat feels good thanks to enemy tells and defensive options, while the platforming is tight and consistently introduces new ideas. Exploration strikes a good balance without becoming overwhelming, and the abilities and trinkets provide meaningful ways to customize your approach. The adventure also hits a sweet spot in both difficulty and length.
Cubed3 - 9/10
A darker take on the metroidvania formula, Well Dweller combines quirky humour, rewarding exploration, smooth movement, and helpful tools to make completion far less cryptic than most in the genre.

This looks fantastic. The reviews I've read have mainly been extremely positive, and as its been mentioned its not too difficult, I might actually get somewhere!
As its on GP later today I'll try it there to download and try it, but if I like it I'll buy it to support the devs and probably buy it for PS5 (though I might show Steam machine some love).
Can someone teach me how to enjoy 2d games
@RomanRiz Got news for you bub, technically all games played on a tv screen are 2D. Every pixel is a two dimensional image whether it’s fooling your eye into thinking you’re looking at something 3D or not. So unless you don’t enjoy ‘3D’ games either, you already are enjoying 2D games.
Great news for the Developer, I haven't known about it long but really like what I saw in a recent trailer. I like dark fantasy and don't see it all that often in Indie titles. It makes sense that a Studio wants to play it safe and not out-mature it's potential demographic, I'm glad some still dare to be different. It looks like I have Crypt Custodian and never tried it, I need to fix that.
Nice! Interesting the Japanese title is Ido no Tori (well bird)
I believe it, Crypt Custodian was very enjoyable.
Well Dweller, well deserves playing. This looks like a fun metroidvania.
What happens when you leave the reviews of a niche game to reviewers with a special liking to said niche?
You get good reviews.
What happens when you roll the dice and let anyone regardless of taste or credentials do reviews of a tripple A-game?
The results are less conclusive.
Review scores and aggregates are indeed an interesting science and art form
I still remember Eurogamer let Katherine Castle review KCD 2 and in her review she specifically said she didn't understand/appreciate the immersive features. She didn't buy in to the central premise of the game. I might as well let my wife decide what I play at that point.
What is my point? I would, at most, give this game a 5/10 because it is only 2D!! In 2026!
@Balaam_ thanks Neil deGrasse Tyson
Ill be buying it a great single player game is a great game whether its indie or aaa
2D indie roguelites are guaranteed to get 90+ Metascores, hence why I dismiss the concept of that meaning anything anymore (along with aggregator sites and reviews in general).
Looks fun but my concern is the published, they tend to stop patching their ports after a while. E.g. Top Hat stopped patching Alisa, despite PC version getting updates.
I legit forgot the game released today. Guess I know what I'm buying later.
OMG this looks awesome! Has a Prince of Persia vibe to it! I’ll be picking it up for sure!
Lol just 5 critics. And an indie 90+ I believe is not quite the same as an AAA 90+.
Been looking forward to this. I've played 3 games from this dev, Kyle Thompson - Crypt Custodian, Sheepo and Islets - and they have all been brilliant, but he's also been getting better with each release. This has looked great since it was announced. Excited.
EDIT: What's with all the negativity. Gamers SUCK!
Kyle Thompson is so damn good at what he does!
I highly suggest all of his games, they run perfectly on a Steam Deck and are ideal for a handheld.
I cannot wait for another brilliant addition to his impressive collection of games.

But seriously we all like different things, maybe you'll never like them... but if you want an honest answer i'd advise trying some of the very best 2D games based on what genre you might like e.g. Hollow Knight, Hades, Super Mario World, Tetris, Terraria, Stardew Valley, Slay the Spire, Inside, Ori 1 & 2, Celeste etc. If you can't find any enjoyment there then maybe they just aren't for you, that's OK.
There's just too many good side scrolling metroidvanias. When you've played one, you've played them all.
Can't get excited for these anymore. They all play near identically.
Good art n it flows I shall get 👍 nice little samhain season sidescroller for the portal
-ops there’s a demo try that first.
@RomanRiz Find one that resonates with you. For me it was SpiritFarer, I'd just lost someone and that game deals with that topic, it was better than any therapy session I'd had to try to deal with it. Rivers of tears came out during that game, 2D or 3D didn't matter, it did something so unique and became unforgettable.
Other games like Dead Cells were experiments in a new genre and it then became a kind of 'this game is impossible' to 'but it's not going to beat me'. It gave me something to push for then other similar 2D games followed. The only time 2D didn't hit right for me was after playing Unicorn Overlord (one of the best games ever made) and then deciding to try the Developer's other games. I landed on Odinsphere and it wasn't a good match, or I was really bad at it, which happens.
I'm at the point now with games where 2D/3D are something I don't even consider, I go by recommendations and tend to really enjoy each title. Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night is another recent example, I wanted to try Castlevania without trying Castlevania, it was recommended and I couldn't put it down. And don't even get me started on Vampyre Survivors, I don't even register reality when I hit play, I'm just in that zone and grab any survivor-like I see now, most of those are 2D too.
@AhmadSumadi Are you feeling any better after the weekend? did gaming help?
Ohhh you're right - I did not know about this. It looks great!
lets not get carried away it has 5 reviews all on pc..
@RomanRiz No, it's your problem to find something enjoyable or not.
@GirlVersusGame I just feel like I cant get immersed in them due to the 2d nature. Feels very video gamey and that just takes me out
@TheArt I have had cheap games that left a deeper impact on me then extremely expensive ones. Jeanne d'arc on PSP, Dark Cloud these are some simple smaller games that left a bigger smile on my face then GTA or RDR fun is different for everyone.
@RomanRiz Then I'll tell you what I told someone who turned their controller into pieces after they started playing Fromsoft games because everyone else was playing them. You don't have to like every style/genre and forcing yourself to want to will only frustrate you to no end. Keep doing what you already enjoy, I treat every new genre as an experiment. If it hits and it fits then great and I try more of the same thing, if not I try something else.
These games get more fanfare and love from gamers than “It Happens On PS5” games.
Maybe it’s the sheer love for the medium and the joy of playing fun games?!
@GirlVersusGame Best reply to Roman's comment so far--kind, thoughtful, and constructive.
The rest of them, not so much.
@RomanRiz They tend to be simple yet challenging, with some of the more contemporary ones attempting to expand on the simplicity of their 80's and 90's counterparts, which I grew up on.
Some of these games are fantastic while others tend to rely more on art rather than level design or gameplay.
Blaster Master is still my favorite 'metroidvania.'
This looks great but I can't in good conscience purchase it when I have Silksong unfinished 🤣
