PlayStation developer Bungie has confirmed it'll likely need until the first few months of 2028 to complete the unvaulting process of old Destiny 2 content it recently promised to bring back.
A new community update post shares a predicted timeline for the content unvault, with the studio currently at the pre-production stage. It expects to be at this point until January or February of next year, and then it'll enter full production for about 12 months, placing a finish line at the beginning of 2028. "It's a lot of content," said Bungie.
Right now, it's planning to bring back the following content:
- Red War, Forsaken, Curse of Osiris, and Warmind campaigns
- Strikes from the above releases
- Raids, and Raid Lairs from the above releases
- Menagerie Activity with reprised rewards
Once it's completed the unvaulting process for the content listed above, it's put together a list of "stretch goals" it'll also consider. Those include free roam destinations, seasonal activities, raid and raid lair weapon updates, and PvP maps.
Here is Bungie's progress bar, highlighting how it's currently in pre-production and what's to come:

The developer says it's currently "on track" to deliver the unvaulted content to the above timeline.
Between now and then, Bungie has lots of other Destiny 2 content and updates to look forward to. It teases a "Destiny 2 celebration" based around the community that helped bring it back, one that "provides new updates for you all to enjoy. More details to come!"
The team also talks of "Destiny Legacy", where Bungie talks of serving the "whole experience" to players. Some fans think this could be a kind of Destiny Classic version, similar to World of Warcraft Classic, where the original version of the gam is brought back to play.
Finally, there's a redacted event. Bungie just says "We're back" in relation to this tease. It sounds like more information on all three things will come in February 2027.
A lot of the blog post talks about Bungie attempting to regain the trust of its fanbase, and it ends with the following:
We're not going to forget the mistakes of the past, but it's time to learn from them and unify as one Bungie community. For us, the majority of our Bungie team is legacy Destiny, and we will all tell you that nothing can help bridge us into future more than for Marathon to rapidly evolve and become sustainable. As we head into our December and March updates for Marathon, it’s a formative period for all of us here at Bungie that will help determine the shape of our future, so please encourage each other and know that your support gives our team the energy to finish the fight.

Let them make a new Killzone instead.
It would probably be ready in 2027 if they didn't have to waste so much dev time on Marathon.
I read that statement of theirs at the end of the article, and I have to say, it comes across as somewhat desperate, as if all hope is pinned on Marathon, and right now, it's not looking so great. Bungie sound truly worried...
Pre production on recreating content that'll take 12 months. Surely it's just....on a server somewhere right? Expedite the process a bit? Or did they delete it all?
Not that I want this reality at all, but if they decide to completely abandon Marathon, that would probably free up a lot of their devs to expedite the unvaulting of D2 content.
I'll also continue to ask for a D1 remaster. I still think D1 is vastly superior to D2.
@Fiendish-Beaver Marathon is a thorn in everybody’s side right now 😆
I thought at worst un-vaulting would come summer 2027. That seemed like a long time to keep any kind of hype alive. But to think anyone is going to be excited for old Destiny content over a year from now seems... delusional. If I were a betting man I wouldn't bet we see any content at all. This does not read like high levels of confidence but high levels of cope.
…so why even bother at this point.
“Yeah, we can’t get to this till 2028. In the meantime, enjoy this other game that no one asked for!”
Marathon surely wasn't a golden goose they hoped for.
Content already created just use ai to implement it faster.
I’ve done my due diligence and read up on how the content being vaulted away was supposedly a ‘necessity’ due to engine/delivery limitations, but locking away content is pretty much the peak of 💩 mountain. Artificially manufactured fomo like how Disney used to sell certain DVD’s for only a limited time and then pull them from market. Anyway, not like I’m a huge Destiny fan (suffered through 1, never bothered with 2) but I’m glad for the fans that this stuff is coming back. Long overdue.
well i've got a long wait ahead of me
That statement reads as a not-so-subtle ‘please play Marathon because we won’t be here in a year to make Destiny content if we don’t have a sustainable income from Marathon’…
Would have loved a Marathon solo-offline game, because there’s definitely something great happening there. But I know that this isn’t what Bungie (or Sony) want(ed) from them…
“Red War, Forsaken, Curse of Osiris, and Warmind campaigns”
That is the best video game news I’ve heard in a while! I’m so mad those campaigns got vaulted and can’t wait to have them back.
@Balaam_ You have no evidence the content was vaulted to create artificial FOMO. Not sure why people have so many unhinged conspiracy theories about video games.
@Balaam_ i think its to do with the size of the game and they are probably do working on file compression if i had to guess as destiny 2 as it is today is 179gb if they didnt take away that old content i bet the game would be north of 300gb and that would kill the games as nobody would install it and alot of people would delete it.
Didn’t they rebuild Destiny 2 and make everyone reinstall the game after some of this content was already gone? Maybe that’s why it’s gonna take a while because they need to reintegrate this into the newer build.
So if i get this correctly, Marathon is doing crap sales wise and player engagement is bare minimum so not much sell through potential for expansions being created etc.
Their solution is to win old Destiny fans over like me, based on giving back the content they stole from us, but making us wait at least 1 year and 3 months to do so. The have to take this long as they seemingly need to redevelop the content which is a cost to them but i am taking they are not selling this back to us. So what money is keeping them afloat as a business during all this time? Based on the type of game Marathon is, I have no interest in purchasing it but even had it been a new Destiny pve style game, no matter how much I love their gameplay and gunplay loops, I would not purchase anything from them until they had redeemed themselves and gained back trust. I cannot be the only former Destiny player who feels this way, so I have no idea how they can keep going without income coming in.
Also, I thought Destiny 1 could still be played?
Getting back content that was already paid for. Bungie is one of the worst devs when it comes to milking it's fanbase. The fact they tried to lie about that by blaming everyone else. It was never Bungie fault, Bungie where the "victims" of publisher's like Activision. Sony made a huge mistake buying Bungie
@nomither6 @Fiendish-Beaver Marathon is already in a Humble Bundle on PC. Pay £22.48 and you'll get Marathon, Xenonauts 2, Crysis Remastered, Crysis 2 Remastered, Crysis 3 Remastered, Ghostrunner, Ghostrunner 2, RoboCop: Rogue City and RoboCop: Rogue City Unfinished Business. That's more than 40% off the RRP and you get 8 other games with it. I feel Iike this doesn't bode well for Marathon.
I love the Destiny universe. I'll gladly wait and I hope that this is all followed by more decisions that keep the players and lore in mind. It was a massive mistake for them to bail on that world.
Why not make the Original Destiny Free to play like Destiny 2 is. And breath some new life into that game as well.
Being 100% Honest, I'd totally throw them $20-$30 to re-experience D1 from the beginning at 60FPS with a wider field of view. That game changed my life for the better.
The content should never have been removed.
@TheFakulty I haven't bought anything since they took content away. Destiny 1 is still playable.
Too little too late for me. I left when they took away our paid for content and put it in the vault.
Also, I see no mention of the Tangled Shore, I loved that destination.
@TheFakulty
My clan slowly disbanded before the sunsetting happened but I stuck around because it was so satisfying to shoot things. I don't think anyone has surpassed the feel of an FPS over Bungie games.
That said, I left for good with the news of the content sunsetting and I didn't even stick around long enough to see it happen.
Now I've been so out of the loop I'll never return. Far too many systems have changed and I would have no desire to learn them.
2028 LOL, im glad i have actually quit destiny 2
One last opp to squeeze the the last drops of cash from that dwindling community before they shut the whole thing down. No thanks Bungie.
@Areus What do you consider as "free"? I think it's free (over 100gb demo) to try but not free to play as you're locked out of most content by pay walls.
So nearly 2 years to wait - do they think the fanbase will hang around by then - I know I won't it wont hold any appeal for me in that space of time, tbh I stopped playing it when they took the servers down and moved on ... sure I'm not the only one - Now I've been so out of the loop I'll probably never return
I wish Bungie good luck and hope they are able to pull off a comeback.
"We need over a year to put all the stuff back in the game that we took out" is certainly something.
