EA is closing RPG studio BioWare.

The maker of Mass Effect and Dragon Age will shut down as EA cuts "around" 400 roles within the company, which will include roughly 50 at BioWare. As a result, the next Mass Effect game has been cancelled.

Earlier today, a letter to EA staff was distributed by chief operating officer David Tinson and chief studios officer Cam Weber. In it, the firm states it's "taken a hard look at our business", and some projects have been cancelled as a result.

The next Mass Effect title, which was said to be "early" in development, is included in the cuts.

A message published to the EA website reads: "We've made the decision not to move forward with this development, which means we’re closing the studio and our Edmonton workspace. BioWare is a legendary studio that helped define the role-playing genre, and we do not take this decision lightly."

Projects that will continue include the sports games, Apex Legends, the third Star Wars Jedi game, the Iron Man title, Battlefield, and supposedly a new Star Wars: Battlefront entry.

A new instalment in The Sims has been cancelled, and the team working on Skate has been downsized.

In a post to its fans, BioWare said on social media: "What generations of BioWare built together is something to celebrate and remember. These games became so much more because you played them, debated your choices, fell in love with the characters, and made these worlds your own."

"From all of us at BioWare, thank you for being the most meaningful part of our story."

Formed in 1995, out of Alberta, Canada, BioWare made its name with the Baldur's Gate and Neverwinter Nights series. Over the decades, it also made hits like Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, Jade Empire, and all the entries in the Mass Effect and Dragon Age franchises.

Earlier this year, EA was bought out and taken over by a consortium that includes the Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund, Silver Lake, and Jared Kushner’s Affinity Partners, worth $55 billion. Whether the purchase and EA's new owners have influenced this decision isn't confirmed.
