The very first game Sony chose to market its upgraded PS5 Pro console alongside during its short reveal video was The Last of Us Part II Remastered, which at the time, felt like a double-edged sword. Its outstanding quality means hardcore PS5 owners are always open to a replay of the Naughty Dog game, but from a visual perspective, it already looked pretty incredible on PS4. It also already looks pretty incredible on PS5 thanks to a native PS5 remaster at the start of this year.
Placing the focus entirely on visuals without any hands on time with a controller, The Last of Us 2 Remastered on a PS5 Pro could be emblematic of the "They're the same picture" meme from The Office. You are looking for the more minute details in any particular scene to notice any proper difference over the standard PS5 version. Yet, combine those stellar visuals with the smoother gameplay of 60 frames-per-second and everything changes. The Last of Us 2 truly shines on a PS5 Pro by marrying the best of both worlds: it features both peak performance and graphical quality all at once.
Sony's enhanced PS5 Pro system allows The Last of Us 2 Remastered to run in a new graphical setting: the Pro mode. It renders natively at 1440p, but PSSR (PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution) then upscales the resolution to 4K while targeting 60 frames-per-second. This setting essentially takes the Performance Mode of the original PS5 remaster and works on the resolution through AI upscaling. It retains the steady 60FPS and improves the graphics further to make for an even better playing game.
Having played through roughly the first 90 minutes of the campaign over again, what really stands out the most are the smaller details. From the wrinkles on Joel's hands to the individual freckles on Ellie's cheeks to the smallest snowflakes landing on Dina's coat, tiny elements of a scene are more noticeable in this higher resolution. Previously blurry or tough to notice, the PS5 Pro brings every detail to the forefront.
Given the experience already looks so sublime without visual enhancements placed on top, a seasoned PS5 owner isn't going to spot many sweeping advancements. However, with the finer elements put in focus within a smoother, more responsive experience, this is the definitive way to play The Last of Us 2 on console. While the settings menu claims the PS5 Pro can only "target" 60fps, it achieves it virtually all of the time. From spectacular cutscenes to the more intense combat encounters, the game never hitches or takes a nosedive in frame rate during an action-heavy sequence. It's as flawless as flawless can be — an impressive achievement to see graphics and performance so perfectly synced with one another. No longer does one need to suffer so the other can thrive.
The Last of Us 2 Remastered, therefore, has to go down as one of the premiere PS5 Pro launch games, proving how the console can be seen as the best of both the Graphics and Performance Modes of the past. By combining the two base PS5 modes through PSSR, the Naughty Dog masterpiece has never been better on consoles.
What's even more exciting, though, is the PlayStation heavyweight achieved this visual and performance splendour with a PS5 remaster of a PS4 game. What will it manage when developing a title natively for PS5, now with knowledge and experience of already working with PS5 Pro? Give it a few years, but its next PS5 Pro title could be the one that justifies your purchase. The Last of Us 2 Remastered isn't bad either in the meantime.

I honestly think that we have different expectations when someone is talking about "game changer"
This game looks amazing. Even on a standard PS4 it's still right up there. Loving the results on PS5 Pro here!
Wooooow, a PS4 game runs good on a PS5 PRO. Who would have thought that.....?
No thanks, it runs with 2K and 60fps perfectly on my PS5 Slim. There are VRR options on some games, no need for a Pro model.
No, no. Needs a remake.
For me it´s a game changer to be able to enjoy high quality visuals in 4K without resorting to 30 fps. Very satisfied with my Pro. And if you think it´s enough with the regular PS5, well none is forcing you to buy the Pro 🙂
All these articles about the awesome graphics in games launched on the PS5 PRO could become better with actual comparison between the both PS5 and PS5 Pro — make some screenshots on both devices, shoot the same fragments and film some videos to compare all the details and frame rates.
Otherwise I read all these stuff like "beautiful games look more than just beautiful" or "run better than ever".
New console designed to improve graphics and performance actually improves graphics and performance of games. Yes, we get it.
@Tomato_Goose You need to see the games on an actual decent tv to see the differences. The main differences i see with the pro are kinda like a phone screen with a screen protector on (ps5) and then a phone screen with protector off (ps5 pro)
It's a bit underwhelming that what was originally a PS4 game, albeit an amazing looking one, still isn't getting a completely consistent 60fps. It seems consoles are doomed to not have 60 across the board. It's a shame they don't offer more specific graphics settings so you could tweak something and get it to stay at 60.
I moved my Pro from the living room TV to the HDR TV in my bedroom. Booted up Jedi: Survivor and even my wife who says it all looks the same was able to comment on how much better it looks.
I choose PS5 Pro over PS5 Poor
its amazing how last of us 1 looks on ps5 pro , crazy it was a ps3 game.
@Lup It needs a remake of the remastered remake!
There are dozens of games with PS5 Pro improvements PushSquare can make articles of. God bless Sony!
Shame they shoehorned that god awful rogue lite mode in to the remaster. I’ll be avoiding that slop like the plague and stick with the PS4 version with its superior trophy list.
Does it fix the terrible betrayal of the story?
@dskatter
And then you need to wait for the PS6 Pro to finally run the game as it was intended!
Literally me when looking at PS5 vs PS5 Pro screenshots
@riceNpea Nah, luckily the story was incredible on day one.
@riceNpea Boooo! Boooooooo! 🤣
@riceNpea couldn’t understand the story eh.
£700 console makes 4 year old last-gen game look better. Well I never.
I'll get the PC release, which will be "the best of the best" version of this game.
@Matroska So you clearly don't read articles you reply to?
"still isn't getting a completely consistent 60fps."
Article states:
While the settings menu claims the PS5 Pro can only "target" 60fps, it achieves it virtually all of the time.
Just someone looking for something to moan about!
The saltiness in this comments section is just... Wow.
Anyway, I think Ragnarok on the Pro looks just as good as this. It's comparable to a high-end PC, it's that spectacular.
As per DF during preview stage, this update appears to only really be using PSSR, ie no changes to other settings which would require the additional GPU power Pro has.
Quite an impressive update (and showing for PSSR) if this is still the case.
@Balaam_ Yeah nothing says "superior trophy list" quite like "mindless collect-a-thon that requires zero skill".
@AhmadSumadi your wife could tell the difference? She’s definitely a keeper 🤣
@Atreus97 that’s good to hear. I’m running through stellar blade on the pro atm but Ragnarok will definitely be next and cant wait to check it out!
@Lup no, no, no. Needs a remaster of that remake. THEN it will be alright.
@Dodoo she’s a day 1! lol
Excellent new console, excellent game and excellent upgrade. I'm loving it.
Yeah so amazing to look at random compressed pictures and without any comparison pictures that show nothing special at all.
@Titntin "Virtually all of the time" isn't the same as "all of the time". Look at the meaning of the word. It means "almost": https://dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/english/virtually
It's that choice of words that I read in the article that made me say what I said. If I hadn't read the article I'd have assumed it was a consistent 60 since it's first party and originally on PS4.
I fired this up yesterday because I had heard about the Pro enhancements being insane. I'll go ahead and say that I was really impressed with it. Some scenes look photo realistic, especially at the beginning when they're riding the horses into town.
@riceNpea Now THAT would be a game changer.
So many comments on articles now just going I don't see any difference on a static image and but, but, but it's a PS4 game. If u don't have any interest in getting a Pro why click on articles about the improvements it makes and then complain about it? It does improve games, you can deny it but the people that own a Pro know ur talking out of ur ...
I've been playing this on PS5 Pro and whilst it's one of the trickier games to show the difference with, sat in front of my TV it is much sharper than the standard PS5 version. From the brief amount of time I've had the game bar up on my TV, it runs around 80fps as well in this mode.
As someone with a 4070ti in my PC, The Last of Us 2 on the Pro is easily up there with the best looking games I've played
A PS4 game (that's been remastered already) looking good with a graphics bump on a console 2 steps down the road, game changer 😂😂😂
Love a good dose of hyperbole to keep the slow Mondays alive.
Can't imagine why my visits here are less common with game changing articles about every pro game
I'm gonna wait for the PS6 remaster.
what game has it changed
@Rjak they’ll probably decide to remake it for the PS5 Pro exclusively first, and maybe remaster Part 1 right after
@Toot1st it has changed THE game
Played up to arriving in Seattle, running on Fidelity Pro Mode with VRR on a LG C2 and it's probably the most beautiful game I've ever seen on a console. According to the TV it seems to be hitting between 85-90FPS at 4K. I don't know how accurate the Frame tracker is on the TV but it looks so smooth, but with all the detail that has me stopping to jump into Photo Mode to just obsess over the set dressing.
Biggest complaint I have so far is the amount of options there are to choose between to ensure best output. I don't know if the options I'm running are the best and I think it'll be up to jumping into Reddit threads to figure out the correct configuration.
@AhmadSumadi haha that exactly what I thought! 😂
@KilloWertz it sure would 😔
@Lofty1985 you're right. I couldn't understand how horrible it was.
The upscaling makes a big difference. I assume if you can't tell you either have an eyesight issue or you're being disingenuous. Of course the game looked fine on PS5. There's no need to upgrade at all. It just looks better on the Pro, and the difference is very noticeable, but it doesn't make it more playable somehow.
Removed - unconstructive
I’m actually playing TLOU Part 1 on the PS5 Pro. To me, it looks really damn good. There’s some tearing in ground textures, but it looks sharp otherwise.
@Czar_Khastik lol 😂 you always have a something funny to say

Does it do anything for the God awful story? At least that 'special' scene will be in glorious enhanced ray traced 4K 60 lol...
No need for the pro in my house. We have a lg g4 65 in the lounge the wife and kids tend to watch movies on that 24/7. Portal for me and I guess pro would be pretty redundant while using that to game on
I have not yet played the remaster, but I did pay the $10 upgrade fee to get it. I have it installing on my PS5 Pro as we speak. I'll give it a go some time after Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth, which is the game I have decided I must use to christen my Pro. I also have both Horizon games installed to also play.
@S1ayeR74
What God awful story?
@Atreus97 Playing that on my OG PS5 seeing how good it looks it's a game I'd like to see on a Pro with my own eyes, but without soending £700 lol.
@Nexozi
100%
You sure said it.
@The_Wailing_Doom Oh yes dreadful rubbish story. Stabbed part 1 in the back a goodun.
The (passive) aggressive tone toward PS Pro reminds me of reaction to Portal lol. So weird…
Definitely a weird time we're in now. This game came out 4 years ago, and yet we've already had 4 different "look how much better it is here" comparisons.
I get these games are huge budgets and it makes sense from a business point of view to milk over a longer period of time. But it's a bit nauseating to see the same handful of games over and over again
I put it on just to give it a try yesterday and it is amazing looking, albeit it always was.
My only complaint was the film grain was so pronounced that I found it distracting. I didn't really see the point of it. Fortunately you can turn it off.
It looks and runs gorgeously. I was most impressed with clothing textures but above all the foliage. There's some moss on top of the school in Seattle that looked completely photo-realistic but completely 3d and natural to the scene. If you want to jump around and see how things are looking I suggest playing some encounters.
@Lup Pfft. Peasants use the PS6 Pro. I’m holding out for the PS6.5 Pro Max!
Please, no more photos of I don't know which is the normal version and which is the PRO version if you don't put the little sign.
@Tomato_Goose Unless you're comparing the differences on a 65" Tv the differences in detail aren't really going to be noticeable. Most people aren't watching the YouTube videos on this site on a large TV screen. So if your request to see comparisons was fulfilled you still wouldn't notice much of a difference if you're looking at them on a small screen.
@Rjak I'm with you,
I don't get it, is it just the Performance mode being upscaled to 4K really well or did Naughty Dog actually used higher Quality mode settings at 60fps?
Does Quality mode even increase the graphics settings, aside from just outputting at 4K, in this game?
At first I was annoyed too because of all the pro articles. But now I really have to laugh every time I see one, so it actually makes me happy.
But „game changer“ is a bit of a stretch here right? It‘s just sharper, I would assume it won‘t run on ultrahigh settings now
I actually forgot I had TLoU2Remastered (had never played it) - and put it on my Pro a couple of days ago. Wow! I was blown away by how good it looked/ran - genuinely a jaw dropping moment.
Sony lets have some NEW AAA games then maybe ill buy a pro until then no thanks.
@AhmadSumadi It doesn't make sense for people who are (supposedly) fans of a platform to be offended by optional products, and then even more offended by them apparently succeeding! Good for a laugh, though.
I wouldn’t want to be a party crasher, but on the screenshots posted above, I don’t find that game looks good. Even enhanced, it still looks old gen. I would rather be curious to see what a masterpiece like Plague Tales Requiem looks like with the enhanced hardware.
It’s pretty bs that in this gen were struggling to hit 60 fps. Priorities are not where they should be.
Can't wait for this on PS6.
This isn't for people who want a huge difference. This is for gamers who want to run quality mode at 60 frames per second. I'm pretty happy with it.
Ps4 game runs well on ps5 pro
Just stop Sony, where is the New GAMES?
