PS5 pack-in Astro's Playroom was a taster dish, teasing players with a short but sweet experience; Astro Bot, then, is the full three-course meal. Developer Team Asobi has been delivering brilliant 3D platformers since PSVR's Astro Bot Rescue Mission, so it should come as little surprise that this latest entry in the young series is among the best games PS5 has to offer.
Building on the already strong foundation of its predecessor, Astro Bot weaves in the core premise of Rescue Mission; rather than tracking down PlayStation-related artefacts, your main job is finding the little robot's crewmates, all scattered throughout each level. It's a perfect recipe for a 3D platformer, encouraging you to explore every nook and cranny in search of those adorable little droids.
The mothership — a PS5, finally filling a role it's always looked designed to play — crash lands on a desert world at the centre of several nearby galaxies. These systems house the game's stages, where you'll spend most of your time, but you'll also regularly return to the hub world, which evolves and expands as you progress. It falls into a great rhythm of exploring each galaxy and its stages, then returning to the hub to drop off your robot buddies and discover new things to see and do.
While there's plenty to like about the hub, which we'll get into later, the main attraction is the game's range of levels, which are as varied, playful, and fun as you'd hope. Each galaxy contains four or five main stages, a boss, and a special last level themed around specific PlayStation franchises. On top of that are numerous shorter challenges — tougher platforming or combat trials to test your skills — and a selection of secret stages to discover. It's a generous package, and what's most impressive is the sheer variety it offers.
Many themes are unique to a single stage; Sky Garden's flamingo paradise is never revisited, nor is Construction Derby's building site. You'll also explore a giant singing tree, a vibrant casino, and the inside of a giant hourglass — all one-and-done ideas. It isn't just the level's themes that are varied; many have their own gameplay ideas as well. One later stage involves swapping from day to night, changing the geometry of the level, while an underwater planet adopts a more open design — and equips Astro with a power-up unique to that stage. While there are some recurring themes and mechanics, the overall variety meant we were constantly excited to see what was coming next.
Speaking of power-ups, our robo-hero makes use of numerous new toys throughout the game. Some appear more than others — the frog gloves, which let you hit enemies from afar and swing from poles, come back a few times, while some one-off mechanics are our favourites. One allows Astro to shrink in size, while another turns him into a sponge, able to soak up and then eject water. All these power-ups combined with the varied level design make for a game that never runs short of ideas, and it's brilliant.
The power-ups flesh out Astro's move set which, on its own, is fairly simplistic. However, while his range of moves isn't particularly deep, they're executed excellently. Jumping, hovering, punching, and spinning all feels spot on thanks to tight, responsive controls. The true test of any 3D platformer is whether it feels fun to simply move around, and Astro passes handily. It feels great to hop around each stage, and Astro is often augmented with new abilities, so we never felt like he needs more moves.
Those PlayStation-themed levels we mentioned are some of the highlights, too. After defeating each boss — each one a fun fight, by the way — you'll meet an iconic Sony character, such as Kratos, and they'll open a new stage based on not only their worlds, but their mechanics. Continuing with the God of War example, Astro will use the Leviathan Axe to attack enemies, and just like Santa Monica's action games, it can be thrown and recalled, freezing enemies and helping progress through the stage. We won't spoil the others, but PlayStation fans will be delighted with these Astro Bot renditions of some favourite franchises.
These are far from the only references to other games you'll see. Of the 300 bots you need to rescue, over half of them are dressed as characters from some of the most iconic games to grace PlayStation over the last 30 years. While a lot of them are based on first-party properties, like The Last of Us, Shadow of the Colossus, and Ape Escape, there are many more based on third-party titles — some of which are amazingly obscure. There are one or two surprising absentees, but on the whole it's a remarkable selection that had us grinning with every character we recognised. It's all delivered with so much affection that it's hard not to love it.
Going back to the hub, where all your collected bots congregate, it slowly opens up to reveal new areas to explore and more features to enjoy. Puzzle Pieces are another collectible to gather, and they unlock new rooms, with one of them being the returning Gatcha Lab. The prizes you get here, earned by spending the coins you've collected, more often than not, are attributed to one of the bots you've found, like a specific weapon or object that gives them a fun interaction in the hub. Other prizes include cosmetics for Astro himself and his Dual Speeder, letting you customise his look with some iconic outfits. You can also unlock the Safari Park, a special zone to hang out in, but it also gives you access to a simple Photo Mode, then usable throughout the game.
The whole game is wrapped up with great presentation, too. The image quality is superb, showing off the vibrant and detailed worlds wonderfully. While it doesn't have the graphical heft of other first-party titles, it's incredibly visually pleasing thanks to clean, consistent art direction. On top of that is silky smooth 60 frames-per-second performance, with not one hitch spotted in all our time playing. Oh, and special mention must be made for the soundtrack, which is just excellent throughout.
We need to give a shout-out to the DualSense support here, because as you might expect, it's best in class. Team Asobi asserted dominance in this area with Playroom, but the range of effects delivered here through haptic feedback and the adaptive triggers outshines it. These conditions do drain the battery, but the implementation is too good to really worry about that. There are even gameplay mechanics that utilise the haptics in ways we haven't seen before, like feeling particular walls for a rough texture to reveal a secret. It really shows what the DualSense can do like no other game before it.
Conclusion
Astro Bot is a stunning 3D platformer, and easily among the best games in PS5's library. It fully delivers on the promise of Astro's Playroom, building on the rock solid core of tight controls and inventive gameplay and turning everything up to 11. With tons to see and do, almost endless fresh ideas, innovative use of the DualSense's features, and truly charming presentation, it's a confident and cohesive experience that players of all ages will love. To top it all off, it's a perfect game to celebrate PlayStation's 30th anniversary, reflecting on the myriad series that made the platform what it is today.

Hey everyone! As usual, happy to answer any questions about the game and the review Thank you for reading.
I’ll be truthful I skimmed, because I want to go in as blind as possible.
Wanted to check mainly for bugs (didn’t expect any tbh)
Guess this is tomorrows purchase and space marine gets pushed back.
Looks like congratulations to team ASOBI is on the cards. Look very much forward to playing.
More of these kinds of games please Sony.
Fair play, will preorder now.
Hope my copy arrives quickly tomorrow along with the dualsense. So excited!
Wow, I'm not surprised but still, what an impressive achievement from the Asobi team. I've not had a chance to play yet but I can't wait!
Holy *****, this is bound to be one the best games of the year. Hope it sells well to see a continuation. This is what everyone wants sony to focus on not some mindless live service games.
Ooooh boy, lets goooo. Admittedly I did scroll straight down to the score. I'll actually read the review now 🤖
Is it tomorrow yet?
Wow wow wow. As expected. It’s been a long time since a game score 10/10 on this site lol. Gonna finish Wukong first
Awesome. Glad to see it turned out well! I am excited!
I've already got this installed and just waiting for tomorrow. This is the first PS exclusive I've been excited to play for a couple of years as I absolutely loved the PSVR game and the free PS5 game.
This is the kind of game that reminds me why I have this hobby and whilst I've had to rely on Nintendo for such a long time for these kinds of games, it's great to see Sony with Ratchet and Clank and now this
I didn't read the review but will after playing a bit tomorrow, but read the 10/10. Brilliant, can't wait to play!
Wow, love to see it! Cannot wait to play this
Mine has been dispatched this afternoon. Hopefully the controller and game both arrive tomorrow! Can't wait for this. The win Sony desperately needed
Knew it would be phenomenal, love me some Astro bot. Can’t wait to play it tomorrow. Would not be surprised of this gets the highest overall rating for a game this year. Also nice seeing Sony making a platforming game. Astro’s Sonys version of Mario.
Excellent as expected, can not wait to play tonight!!
Thanks for the review!
My copy arrived today and it's just SO, SO, SO good so far. I'm in love.
What, no special one off score of 11? 😛
Score only here as well. I've been looking forward to this. Of course my kid is sick so my PS5 is probly gonna get kidnapped....RIP.
It's time people to vote with our wallets. What playstation fans need.
I’m so hyped for tomorrow!
94 on Metacritic based on 74 reviews. I honestly did not expect that but I'm really happy to see that
Well damn. Wasn't actually that bothered about it but seeing the reviews i may have to pick it up now.
I'm surprised by the overall scores the game has been getting. I was expecting an average of 8s, but almost all reviews I saw are 9 and above. Excellent surprise, and congratulations to Team Asobi! I'll be getting the game in the near future, for sure.
I'm really excited to play and enjoy this.
Playroom was exceptional and to see it expanded and improved in this way is a joy!
That's what I figured!! It looks so, so good.
And FINALLY something that's not ultra violent, or a walking simulator.. or one of these stupid live service games..
Sony NEEDS to cash in on more smaller titles/platformer titles like this. I can't wait to get going on this adventure!
Astro to the rescue!
I'm so glad this one turned out as good as many of us hoped.
And who is surprised? I am not reading the review since I want to see everything for the first time on my own. Waiting for tomorrow on my end. I also just got SMS that my controller will arrive tomorrow. Full steam ahead !
People can call me crazy, I don't care, Astro's Playroom is still one of my top 5 favorite games on PS5 and I had very high expectations for this. Have to play it to find out for sure but I'm very encouraged by these reviews as it's grading ahead of even some of Nintendo's best. Not that I had any doubt the team would deliver. Rescue Mission was also great.
Pah, I'll stick with Concord.🙃
Woohoo! Delighted it's so good =D
Sweet this and then Zelda at the end of the month! All I need now is time to play them 🤣
I still wish the game had a VR Mode but after watching lots of footage of it to help me make a purchase decision I'm willing to overlook that. This being said I can only hope that if this game does well which I think it will the developers will hopefully make a VR Astro Bot game next time.
My body is ready!!! I have been wanting a way to reward the developers for their awesome work with Astro's Playroom and this is it!!
My copy got sent out today so il definitely be giving Visions of Mana a rest this weekend.
Let's go rave review 🤪 😆😆😆😆😆
@Dodoo Ohhh I forgot about Zelda.
Get Hiroki Totoki in front of this to see all the Sony IP that could do with dusting off given his recent comments that playstation has a lack of ip. There is loads of forgotten ip Sony should be looking to bring back in some capacity:
Resistance, ape escape, killzone, medieval, patapon, uncharted, syphon filter, motor storm, days gone, infamous, Gravity rush, wipeout, Sly cooper, infamous, puppeteer, Parappa, jak and daxter, siren, little big planet, Socom, Siren, warhawk being just a few examples that spring to mind.
Massive congratulations Team Asobi on knocking this out of the park.
Astrobot is here to save us all!!
@Rob_230
You listed inFamous twice, but I am down with that because we REALLY need a new inFamous. Marvel took over the superhero stuff for Sony, but I think there is room for Sony's original stuff, too.
I’ve grown out of platformers as I’ve aged, but this looks to bring me back! I think I’ll actually buy the game now because it seems absolutely wonderful.
Now I just want this game to cross 5-6 million units so that Playstation see that there is an audience for these games (I've pre-ordered mine but there is a storm so I cannot pick it up before Monday)! A lot of people talk about Japan Studios but very few actually bought their games! Now it's time to let money talk.
Well this has convinced me to buy it, which is good becaue I've got next week off from work!
Ah 10/10. A breath of fresh of air 😌
@Rob_230 Totoki comment about Sony lack of IP's kinda reminds back when Jim Ryan said why would anyone wants to play old PS1 games like GT 1 and 2
https://www.vg247.com/why-would-anybody-play-this-says-sonys-jim-ryan-about-backwards-compatibility
It just reeks of ignorant and disconnect with PS history & fanbase. I fear with Totoki we got another Jim Ryan...
Hoping my preorder arrives tomorrow. I’m at work all day, but I’m hoping to get stuck in when I get home!
@Oram77 Epic week incoming!
the game on ps5 i've been waiting for since i got one basically... the switch has remained my most played platform after all these years because of the lack of games like this, for me the essense of gaming... blue skies...
Nobody is asking the only question that matters.
Can I dress my Astrobot up to look like Kiryu from Yakuza?
I've already pre-ordered the game but I'm still shocked at how high the scores are (not only from Pushsquare). Team Asobi is indeed the true successor to Japan Studio ❤️
Let's roll! Astobots!
So painful to watch the timer slowly count down until I can play it. Pure torture 😂
Also, great review!
See Sony - not everything needs to cost hundreds of millions of dollars in motion capture, voice acting, and script writing.
Sometimes just pure gaming joy is enough.
Nintendo does it all the time and pretty much everything that company produces turns a profit of some kind.
@RubyCarbuncle These developers and this franchise are now the newst and shiniest jewel in Sony's crown. Ain't no way their future projects will be gated behind the floundering VR platform.
I have the game downloaded and ready to go. I hope the controller gets here in time.
I had no doubt. Looking forward to it.
Removed - unconstructive feedback
@The_Wailing_Doom Haha, good spot! I completely agree. I don't see why it should be one or the other with Sony and superhero games. The InFamous series was excellent and arguably there is more freedom to really experiment and go wild with the formula if not tied into marvel licensing. For example they could make a much darker game to balance out the lighterheartedness of marvel content. Second son released 10 years ago, so something new is long overdue (and it doesn't even need to come from suckered punch necessarily as I appreciate they are deep into development of the successor to the wonderful ghost of tsushima)
@Quintumply How long is the game pls? Give or take.
thanks!
A game that truly does the PS5 justice!
Here's to it being the GOTY this year.
And to seeing more awesome new games from PS Studios!
The preordered Astro Bot controller arrived today, 1 day early o_O
The game itself should follow in a day or so.
It's gonna be an awesome father and son gaming time this weekend - we both can't wait to dig into it!
I think this is clearly the frontrunner for game of the year now and it doesn't look like there's anything upcoming that has a chance of dethroning it. PS5 desperately needed this, now they need to reveal the big games 1st party is working on alongside the Pro and 2024 can be saved.
Astro Bot is the light at the end of the Concord tunnel
@PuppetMaster it is concerning. They just need a brief look back at their lineage and history. Money sitting on the table.
Sony seem to misunderstand and think everything needs to be a 100 million, 60 hour epic in order to sell. They could easily fund 3 or 4 quality 20 hour titles (see uncharted lost legacy, Miles morales) for a fraction of the cost and at significantly reduced development times. This is what Shawn Layden called for all those years ago, but he seems to have been ignored. It's so daft.
They could immediately reduce the risk associated with many of these games, and they would no doubt be better off for it. Astro Bot getting the rave reviews it's getting today is the PERFECT example of that.
Sony themselves said not to expect any major titles this year, meaning that they don't consider this a tentpole release. Yet I bet Astro Bot does significantly better than many titles that have spent years in development and cost double the price to make.
@nicc83 I would say around the 12-15 hour mark if you just do the main levels and that's it, but if you want to see and do everything, likely 20 hours or more. Obviously it depends on how much exploring you do and how much you're bothered about collecting everything — it's a very meaty 3D platformer in my opinion and a really nice length.
Sony: Concord? What's that? Anyway, here's Astrobot, enjoy!
No but seriously, congrats to Team Asobi!
Let this game be a sample to Sony that we don't need a formulaic, generic live service games.
Astrobot is the game we need more of, Sony
I have always said that Play Room is the best PS5 experience and I am glad this is living up to it. Will definitely pick this up at a later date when it is a little cheaper. Can imagine there will be hundreds of copies in CeX in a month (thanks to the Plat and Sell crew lol)
@truerbluer
A crazy rollercoaster ride the last few days. The Concord disaster but then this gigantic W. Hopefully the PS userbase shows up to support it.
@Quintumply Came here to ask exactly this — thanks
Hmm, didn’t expect the “for all ages” bit. As a 40-year old I saw it more as a cool tech demo than gameplay I could enjoy for more than a few days.
Perhaps I should give it a chance anyway.
Let's goooooo Astro!
So refreshing to see something a bit more niche, and a potential resurgence of a 'genre long-since forgotten'?!
As much as I adore the likes of Elden Ring, Hades etc... the gaming market right now seems to be over-saturated with Souls-like and Rogue titles, alongside Metroidvanias. Nothing wrong with those games, and I personally enjoy them all, but I also want to 'see something new'!
Nintendo seems to be the only contender in "the big 3" that still focusses on 3d platformers, so I'm delighted to see Sony back in the game also. Hopefully AB sells well.... could lead to a new Croc? Spyro? .... Jak?!
I guess I could put down Dustborn for a few minutes to check this out
I cannot wait to get my hands on this. I was hoping we'd get another Astro Bot game after Playroom, and I'm glad it delivers.
@MrPeanutbutterz I wouldn't call it floundering but it needs to do better and there's always PCVR along with the Quest as well even though I doubt it would make its way to Meta Quest, PCVR however is another story.
I knew this would be amazing having played Astro's playroom. Can't wait. Dropping everything I'm doing as soon as it arrives tomorrow
@AlexPorto
Mid-90s is a little surprising but not totally out of left field. Rescue Mission did finish at 90 on metacritic.
@Darude84 I would say, regardless of age, if you have any interest in 3D platformers at all, I can't recommend this highly enough.
@Rob_230 The impression I'm getting is that ever since Jim Ryan took over, Sony considered 2013 to be the beginning of Playstation rather than 1994.
Astro Bot Rescue Mission on PSVR was a top 3 PS4 game, so I’m not surprised this is a 10/10.
Preordered and preinstalled, ready to go!
Got this on preorder and can’t wait. Can’t be 10 without VR though.
Edit: yes, I can confirm now having played it, a platformer without 3D depth is just inferior to VR platformers. Not to mention not having the sense of scale and wraparound play. Just not as accurate, fun, or engrossing.
8/10. Which is the max a pancake platformer can get for me.
Significantly inferior to the wonderous Astro Bot Rescue Mission. At this point I’d just settle for a PSVR2 remaster.
I just watched the ACG review on YT and this game looks phenomenal, lots of things that remind me of the Mario games and lets be honest, there is not a better platformer out there to take notes from. Also the advantages or lets say unique features this game has over the Mario series are way better graphics and for Playstation gamers all the Bots that remind you of well known games.
I preordered on Amazon, since they sell the game for only 50€. My niece and I will have so much fun with this one.
Can NOT wait.
Just noticed something quite funny, if I look in the Amazon App on my orders, my latest order (Astro Bot) shows the cover of a game called Concord, anyone ever heard of that one?
Sounds like a very easy GOTY then.
Cannot wait to start this, and share the excitement with our kids. Maybe this will get people in the mood to give Psychonauts 2 and Sackboy the love they so deserve!
I never preorder or buy day one unless it’s Nintendo….. but I preordered this one bc it looks so cool and I want to support this kind of game. Very excited!
@Grumblevolcano That's just not true, though, is it?
I've had it preordered for weeks and I can't wait to get into it. The pre-installed AstroBot still makes the best case for the DualSense, so I'm looking forward to seeing if this lives up to or surpasses that.
These games are a celebration of gaming - specifically PlayStation gaming.
Bring it on.
@GamingFan4Lyf This is actually harder to pull off successfully because it requires real talents and creativity.
That's why many studios try to compensate by pouring money into those other areas. Hence, we get so many Ubisoft-like, pretty but bland games.
@Quintumply Thanks for answering the time question.
I read the review, not worried about spoilers in a platformer, and I’m wondering how many of the different one off play mechanics felt gimmicky? I really like platforming but going back to Playroom I really hate that climbing gyro mechanic, doesn’t feel fluid or natural at all. My wife and I enjoyed It Takes Two but some of the one off I was glad to get rid of. My kid on the other hand hated how you kept learning new stuff only for it to be dropped and never return again, just like this review, and I was getting this for them for their birthday.
I would have played it even if it was a 3/10! Just patiently waiting for tomorrow, it will be one of the few games I buy on release day as it deserves all of my attention and money 💯
@RubyCarbuncle There's around 60 million PS5 consoles in homes vs. 2 to 3 million PSVR2 units. At one point Sony apparently halted PSVR2 production in order for the backlog sitting in retailers to sell.
Astro Bot is now looking like Sony's best reviewed game this generation, being called "as good as the best Mario games", has become the mascot that they've been looking for for a long time.. again, there ain't no way that these games going forward are gonna be bespoke VR titles.
@mariomaster96 Still 94 on Metacritic but now based off 99 reviews with over 40 perfect scores. The hype is real!
@Quintumply
One quick question - does it include the PS5 Pro design as an esster egg?
(I have tried not to look at other spoilers as i didnt want other parts of the game spoiled)
@themightyant
Was just looking at that 5 mins ago too with a big smile.
Hey that’s great man. Move over Mario and Sonic et al
Can't wait for it!
I love Super Mario Galaxy, but this game blows all the other Mario 3D games to bits.
Astrobot have raised the bar for 3D platformers.
I really hope this is a huge seller.
We need more FUN games like this from Sony.
Looking at the aggregate scores, this is a glorious triumph. Everyone, please buy this.
@Quintumply Noice thanks!
More games like this please Sony. And more Japan developed games.
@Rich33 Haha, it does not.
@rjejr I personally wouldn't describe any of it as gimmicky; if I could compare it to anything, think of Super Mario Galaxy. Mario gets various power-ups throughout the game and often they only feature a couple of times — it's like that. And it's the same in terms of level design as well, just a huge level of variety that means certain motifs and mechanics are explored only once or twice. In my opinion, the variety and constant new ideas is a big part of what makes this game great, but it sounds as though that might not align with your taste. If you liked Playroom overall, though, you'll definitely like this.
Removed - trolling/baiting
@Quintumply I don't play baby games and this is obviously a game for children.
I almost forgot which day it's coming out. Thought it was 9th, just turned on the download, says will be done in 1 hour. Happy noises
Smyths just sent me the pre-order bonus code.
The order for the game and controller just updated to Preparing for Dispatch.
Feck me I'm excited! Feels like Christmas Eve.
@jmac1686 Okay, thanks for letting me know!
N.i.c.e. astro bot is a masterpiece.glad its a excellent game.playstation needs more video games like astro bot.word up son
Not my kind of game but it's great to see well made single player games achieving success all the same.
Was never a doubt in my mind. Congrats Asobi! Sounds like it's a real banger of a game! Looking forward to it!
Pre-ordered as I have no idea when or what the next Sony game is I'll get. Will be playing this next week after getting through the Blops 6 beta this weekend. Also need to do all the extra stuff that was added to the playroom before starting.
@Quintumply
Thank you - they missed a trick here!
Aw man it's going to kill me waiting on this. Either until Christmas, or wait for a PC port to save it for inevitable VR. Too hard to wait!
Still sitting at 94 from 100 reviews on metacritic and I suppose this guarantees it a game of the year nomination.
That means Sony will have had a nominee for 10 years straight. Every year for the last decade is quite an achievement.
Not my type of game but great job by the developers. I still may buy it. They kicked it out of the park. I am glad to see the positive reviews. It is refreshing actually.
@get2sammyb At least there's been the classics line but you have situations like the only remasters/remakes greenlighted by Jim Ryan being 2013 games onwards and the only new games for legacy IP being from franchises that got PS4 entries.
Hopefully Astro Bot does well enough to convince Hiroki Totoki and Hermen Hulst that Sony has a gold mine of IP to pick from.
Are there any Concord Bots in it?
Great review. less than a day to play it. I hope my Astrobot controller will be delivered before that
Hopefully it's abit more challenging than playroom
Not exactly my jam - but it would seem this, like other games before it, are fun to be had by anyone.
A congratulations are in order for delivering something that can give people joy. That is why we game.
This review (let's be honest, metacritic too) has made me happy. Very happy. Tomorrow can't come soon enough. GOTY!!
@StylesT The main levels are pretty breezy but there are lots of challenge levels which can be quite tough!
I just have one question: is there a demon's souls robot in the game?
Well... this certainly adds to the excitement. Roll on tomorrow..
@MrMagic Yeah it's going to be between this game, ReBirth and Balatro, two of which are exclusive to Playstation. I'm sure HellDivers 2 will take a few awards as well.
So this game does not have a story in the way crash bandicoot, jak and daxter or sackboy have?
Sony should not release this game on PC. It doesn't make any sense. It's a homage to the PlayStation history, it's not a game for the PC people who sh*t on consoles 24/7 and want them to end.
This is like if Nintendo release Mario on PC, it wouldn't make any sense and it would kill his meaning.
This sounds delightful. I'll wait to see if it's going to enjoy a PC port at some point, though. The fact that they're already talking about it makes me think it's more likely to happen than not.
Concord aside (lol), definitely a pretty decent year for PS5 owners.
@Quintumply playroom was a fun little demo for the PS5 but I found it ridiculously easy. Does this game up the challenge much?
@kcarnes9051 The main levels I would say are fairly straightforward to get through without much difficulty. However, as you play through the game, many smaller challenge levels will become available and these amp things up, testing your platforming and combat skills with short gauntlets. Generally speaking, it's pretty easy breezy, but there are tougher challenges to find if that's what you want.
God bless Asobi, i really hope this gets the sales it deserves and Sony realise where their real strengths lie.
IGN gave it a 9/10 trust them to spoil the party, if they had their nintendo tax it would a 10/10 then......
I'm so glad this game exists.
It's been a while since I've played a game that just felt like a joyous experience. This appears to be everything I hoped it'd be. Can't wait to get my hands on it!
Removed - unconstructive
Just preordered it. Can't wait.
@MrPeanutbutterz Well we'll see, only time will tell. There is definitely an audience for VR and I know there are those that don't like VR but that doesn't mean they won't make a VR game. I'll definitely be there for it if and when it happens.
@UltimateOtaku91 Yeah I love Rebirth and Helldivers as well but I've never played Balatro.
Digital Foundry just dropped their Astrobot video, I haven't had a chance to watch yet but I think the title says it all.
This is awesome. Based on what I had seen I knew this was going to be a banger but a 94 on metacritic sheesh. FF7R is my goty but I’m bias. Won’t be surprised at all if AB wins though which is great for Sony! Give me more games I can play with my nephew please.
With this and Space Marine 2 it's feeling like the PS3 again...but a lot prettier! I know it won't last, but I shall revel in it whilst I can!
@jmac1686 Real men play COD eh lol
@Quintumply Thanks. Galaxy is the best 3D Mario game so that's a nice comparison to hear. I can't recall anything as "gimmicky" in Galaxy as moving the controller left and right to climb, even w/ the Wii's motion controls, variety <> gimmicky, but if you're going to compare it to the best I gotta believe you. When my kid wakes up I'll let them know.
@Quintumply Thanks for the insight!
It's been a winning formula since the VR Astro so no surprise here!
Won't be playing at launch, sadly. I've just bought Star Wars Outlaws and Space Marine 2 to keep me happy for a while but I imagine sales are going to be pretty impressive. At least I hope so... to see Sony delve into light-hearted platforming games again would be a win for everyone.
I'll be Astro Bot-ing by the years end 😁
@Quintumply Are the secret stages/hidden levels required to get the platinum? Are some of the cameo characters locked behind them? I am just curious if there's a steep difficulty barrier to get the platinum. I consider myself a decent platforming player, but I know my limits on having perfect reaction timing.
Finally!!!, The Playstation has come home.
@Acquiescence
You guys want actual fun games!? Without BS politics and pandering!?
What is this madness!?
-Sony probably
ACG review = worth every penny

Let's go Astro! 💪🤝
i never thought i see the day push square giving a ps game a 10 score ..
And my physical copy will only arrive on September 14. Oh well, wish you all happy playing.
I expected as much. It sounds incredible but Im seriously still SO deflated about this backstabbing PSVR2 owners. I need more time to process the betrayal but I'm sure I'll pick this up eventually.
From one of their biggest lows to one of their biggest highs in the space of 2 weeks, it's eventful being a PS fan for sure. I love Astro but am holding off for a PC release so I can play this baby in VR!
@Ogbert maybe this is where the industry is going though? Back to mid budget single player titles without all the heavy stakes attatched if it fails. Considering the industry is influx, it's not farfetched this will be the go-to again. Fingers crossed.
@Quintumply Is it possible to turn off the need to blow into the microphone? And to a lesser extent, the motion controls for your Dualsense speeder?
I have it downloaded in my hard drive and can't wait to play it. I still need to get the bots in the playroom game. Only have the monkey. We also need a New Sly game please.
@RubyCarbuncle Oh I don't doubt there's an audience for VR, I just don't see Sony alloting much time or resources to it for their new golden child (Asobi) with this sort of success on the vanilla console under their belts.
It’s a ten from Len! Fantastic, I cannot wait to get stuck in. Happy days ❤️❤️❤️❤️
I won't get my copy until Sunday.....Amazon being amazon.
I am very happy to see Astro Bot is such a polished 3D platformer. I can't wait to play it.
Thanks for the review, I really needed something positive after the bad day I had today.
@rjejr Don't get me wrong, it makes full use of all DualSense's features — you'll be tilting the controller and blowing into the mic (and yes there is a little bit of that climbing mechanic from Playroom, but just the one level).
However! Important to point out that you can toggle a setting that lets you move the left stick instead of tilting the controller, and you can also just mute your mic if you don't want to blow into it.
@Bluetrain7 Nearly every level has at least one Bot to rescue, including the challenge levels and secret levels. In order to get the Platinum, you need to rescue every Bot and get every Puzzle Piece.
I'd say your only potential hurdle is some of the challenges, as they can be quite tough, but broadly speaking the game is on the easy side.
@MrPeanutbutterz Yes — if you mute the DualSense's mic, any moments where you'd normally blow into the mic will just happen automatically. And there's an option in the settings to toggle off controller tilt, and just use the stick instead.
@jmac1686 A lot of babies here want to play it I'm one of them. What are you going to play a adult copy and paste game part whatever.
@Quintumply Fantastic, ta for the feedback. I play with my controller mic off by default, and I'd find lifting it up to my mouth to be immersion-breaking.
Let a new road to nostalgia begin! A game full of gameplay, no less! Reactions of people playing this game would be quite entertaining! If you're having a bad day, this game will help you out!
Well im in Germany today then off to italy for a week, and my 4 1/2 yr old nephew sent me a vid asking whens the new astro bot out? Can we play it when your back, u can bring your playstation over and play it on our tv, then heard my bro tell him to say, enjoy your holiday 🤣😅 which he then did, then straight back to astro bot 🤣🤣 bless him. Honestly cant wait to play this when i get back
Should be Playstation mascot really need to bring such a thing back
Astro’s Playroom was already the best game available on PS5. Nothing else has come close this gen. So it’s great to hear the follow up game is even better. I never had any doubts.
Who would have thought Team Asobi would become Sony’s best studio? What’s everyone else been doing for the last five years?
This and The Plucky Squire, September is going to be a good month for gaming.
I'm hoping this game's success will see Astro Bot Rescue Mission upgraded to PSVR2. Very excited to play tomorrow!
@MrMeeeseeeks Many of them are from the defunct Japan Studio that was shut down by Sony in 2021. Those devs are also real gamers with passion and vision who made tons of classic and unique games back then.
10/10, wow. I can't wait for tomorrow, this is going to be so much fun.
And I rest my case, pure videogaming right here. No ***** openworld, crafting, soulslike, roguelite. Just incredible level design. Playability, visuals, audio. And yes it gets a 10/10 wake up Sony, not all of us want the above genres I mentioned above this proves it.
"Playstation platformer." Bit of an oxymoron. Not a lot of games to compete with in that field, but I'm sure it's great.
94% on Metacritic is fantastic. Now let's hope it translates to actual sales.
@Jimmer-jammer 2 of my favourite games them. Can't beat a good 3d platformer
@TrickyDicky99 you'll be waiting at least a year then. Likely more
Great score. A week of contrasts for PlayStation then!
Let's hope this is a smash hit... and then learn the lesson Sony. Find your soul again.
This is great news for everyone who loves videogames. I hope it sells accordingly those solid reviews.
@rusty82 Agreed! Pretty stoked to be getting another good one 😄
Talk about dancing all over Concord's grave.
Maybe it'll make Sony realize that not every game from them needs to be a 70 trillion dollar budget game. Obvious hyperbole, but you know what I mean.
@TrickyDicky99 yeah you keep telling yourself that 😂
@RubyCarbuncle well glad to be of service reminding you! 😂
@Gamer83 you’re not crazy for loving Astro’s Playroom. There was clearly a lot of love put into it. I’m sure the sequel will be phenomenal
Is it good with cameos yes (not a graveyard indeed), is it good with core mechanics IT OFFERS yes, level design eh the themes are generic.
Does it look & feel probably great I bet it does. Does it have unique enough mechanics like older platformers nope. The ears look cool, no mechanic, small size theme/cosmetic, sigh. No Rayman heli mouse ears in that level I bet or wind for puzzles/attacks. Out of the box ideas. Gameplay first EVERYTHING.
People can want presentation, charm, graphics, whatever level design/easy mechanics, no puzzles (unless platforming related I assume), etc. Dualsense use are be fine, level design/movesets look done before.
But feel/out of the box (platformers/racing, arcade feel, floaty not heavy drops/jumps/tight I hate, I don't want realism/hate heavy feeling characters), uses (attacks eh, platforming items to puzzle solve/general moves matter A LOT) & does level design do something crazy cool. Most times to me. No they don't. Some platformers are really safe in their level design/movesets so you bet I'm critical.
I don't deny this game is great, his character with the beams with his legs/his charming character design/personality & visuals are great, but that's not enough for me.
Many push combat/dialogue/charm, I want platforming to be GOOD. Most times it's bland.
Splatoon 2 was good to me early this year, grapple/other details were simple but great QOL over 1 & the guns as grapples, etc. were fair & the level design was great. For modern it was good. No minigame/quest based crap.
I think it will have a lot of cool stuff no doubt, trailer shows lots of cool stuff (not watching reviews showing off levels I don't want spoilers), the grapple, and other stuff from past games, some fair new stuff I've seen in other footage. But is it THAT amazing no actually.
Many platformers have done a lot over the years in abilities/level design/marketing not reaching people, more dialogue/combat/other crap & level design/movesets taking a hit.
Many that the Indies even are inspired by all feel bland, & why because the level design is eh, the movesets are pathetic & to be honest they don't have the talent & their inspiration is just weak.
Here Astrobot has the talent & the polish but are the mechanics/moveset actually as good as the forgotten platformers nope. AA platformers I have no nostalgia & are still better.
Mario/Sonic/Ratchet kept being lazy to add anything that exciting other than keep up with themselves. Odyssey may be what it is but I've seen plenty of capture mechanics before and better done even if Odyssey's is the simplest.
Sonic going open 'zone' was fine. Insomniac just pissing on the floor with Rift Apart over Crack in Time's built up dramatic change of the formula & pathetic rift feature that Crack built up as a start on an HDD. 2021 with staff changes just annoys me with current gaming. RA was as story piece of slop, & boring gameplay wise.
Same with racing, my favourite racing games are from the past because modern ones suck.
Puzzle PS1/PSP not Tetris/Match 3 games, obstacle course ones.
Astrobot does a great job but even if I am fine with the few that gave 10s then the 9s of those going oh it's not game of the year material.
I wouldn't/I wasn't that interested. Gori/Akimbot were that bit more.
Older platformers ideas WERE experimental, STILL ARE FRESH/UNIQUE in the genre, no one wants to copy them, expand on them, make their own mechanics like them. That's my problem.
Good to know!
now bring back sly, ratchet and clank with multiplayer again(YES, MULTIPLAYER LIKE R&C3) , Jak & Daxter games, Sackboy, Playstation Allstars, Modnation racers, Ape Escape, Etc!!
edit - hell, even infamous ! i want another infamous!
This is, in my opinion, a very good game.
I decided last minute to go ahead and pick it up. Kind of been content to just wait for a sale or something but between the unanimous praise and just seeming like something I'm into figured why not.
Hijacking this comment section just to add. Astro bot Rescue Mission (VR ONE) is still the MOST transformative game I've played in my adult life. If you've become jaded or gaming bores you, it'll legit make you feel like a kid playing games for the first time again. That feeling that desentized adults have to take drugs to feel, I kid you not. No word in the english dictionary can describe THAT feeling.
I'm sure this'll be amazing, creative and win GOTY (it's a lock at this point I think). But VR transforms the experience and Astro elevates it.
Just picked up the digital preorder and decided to buy a Portal again.
The game is pure and glorious fun. Loving it❤️
I very rarely buy games on release. Actually the last one was probably last gen. I’m going to get this. I loved Astro’s playroom and I have no doubt this is gonna be an experience up there with Mario Odyssey.
Everyone buy it! Then hopefully Sony realise that fun, original, innovative single player experiences have a place in today’s world.
Yes, I’m also voting with my wallet and getting this today. Hopefully, Sony gets the message.
Whole family, from the five year old to my wife, are all smiles. That's basically nirvana for me, so thanks Sony.
MORE of this, please. More joyous celebrations of the bizarre!
I’m still so livid this isn’t couch coop. Would scratch mine and my wife’s Sackboy itch
My copy is installing as I write this, really looking forward to getting stuck into this tonight. That's if I survive my bolegnese leftovers for dinner!
Can't wait to get through the next 8 hours of work and go play this. Already getting the good time vibes!
I bet you could fry an
Egg on the download servers. 88%!
@ThorsHammer I certainly hope so! I know I have nostalgia for that period but I do try and look at it with a critical eye too, and I have about triple the number of PS3 games than I do PS4 and PS5, plus the portables.
Also it seems to be exactly what Nintendo are doing and they're thriving at the moment.
You are not lying. I am loving it. It's up there with the Mario and Spyro on PS1 as one of the best platforms ever created.
@TrickyDicky99 Horizon Forbidden West was indeed on PS Plus in that timeframe as an experiment - and it killed the sales of the game stone dead. Hence you could get it for 20 quid used as well.
End result - that particular experiment was a failure and we haven't seen many high profile Sony games hit the service since.
@NeonMullet I'm playing that game on Quest 3 right now. It's just like Astro Bot Rescue Mission but dare I say somewhat better.
@MrPeanutbutterz I don't think they will either tbh seeing as they've made a pig's ear of supporting PSVR2 so far. Can't see that getting any better anytime soon. I have Quest 3 and Valve Index for my VR needs anyway and when I don't feel like playing on them I still have the great Library PS5 has to offer VR or not.
@Archius9 LOL 😂😂
Astro bought! 😎 can’t wait to play it with my daughter this evening.
Digital foundry was stunned by the technical achievement of astrobot, so it beg's questions about the purpose of a ps5 pro.
no battery issue. i upgraded to 2650 batteries, and i play some intensive games on 4 meter usb-c to usb-c cable
Maybe because im my late 50s is the reason this doesn't grab me at all. It's a glammed up platform game at a minimum of £60. I don't have any children to let play it, and I'm pretty sure my wife would be none too happy if spending £60-£70 for gameplay that lasts less than most days I work and then would say why am I playing a kids game.
Sorry Sony this does not make up for Concord. For £60 I want a game I can invest time in to enjoy for at least 2 weeks with a script and story that I will sit and ponder and go "wow" like the original horizon zero dawn or the last of us and remember for years.
I expect five minutes after finishing this it will be gone from your long term memory never mind your hippocampus.
Are you all so desperate for a new game to play that you over hype a children's game so highly? That cheapens the achievements of the better games that proceeded it.
The dev that was interviewed even said specifically "I only make kids games" which is confirmed by the age rating of 7.
Astrobot doesn't tick any boxes for me, nice try, but no cigar.
Hopefully Space Marine 2 will be more interesting.
I am playing now with my daughter and I find something that team Asobi are geniuses. They made it like save game memory cards of ps1. So she can play and i separately with separate progress. This worths praising. Those guys are geniuses.
@zebric21
Digital Foundry are owned by IGN who gave Concord a 7 and Black Myth Wukong an 8 and have given Astrobot a 9. I will let you come to your own conclusions on that.
They are used to seeing the PS5 struggle with unreal engine 5 games, so a platform game that renders low quality cartoon textures at a fast rate but only occasional dips below 60 was a surprise.
I am in gaming heaven…I feel pity for gamers and non gamers alike who will never experience the pure joy of playing Astro Bot. It is a privilege to own this game. I literally have burst out laughing out of surprise and genuine mirth on many occasions and I am only a few hours in. Team ASOBI have created a Sgt Peppers moment in 3D platformer gaming. I want to call friends to gather them round to enjoy and share this experience with me. My Grandson is going to love it too. What a day to be a gamer! Now if only DPD can get there finger out of there arse and deliver my Astro dual sense to complete my gaming utopia I will be truly complete!
I’ve only spent an hour with it, so far, but I can already say there’s a good chance this will be my GotY. I was smiling like an idiot the entire time and loving every second of it and its charm.
@WanderWhere Screw it i will bite
1. Chances are this game is going to be played by more adults than kids. Something doesn’t have to be gritty and blood soaked to be fun…when you hit 18 did you just suddenly decide that the only way you could enjoy something was if it was sweary and violent?
2. Sony doesn’t have to “make up for concord” to you. If you bought the game they are refunding you. If you didn’t buy the game (which I’m guessing is the case) they don’t owe you anything.
3. Everyone’s idea of what a £60 game should be is going to be wildly different but its probably an 18 hour campaign if you breeze through and then significantly more time if you want to sweep up collectibles and secrets, of which this game has MANY. Not to mention the challenges and speed runs they will be adding in the next few months. I have bought £70 games which have bored me within 3 hours and £15 games that I play for years. Price point is fine and if not it will be on sale within 6 months…no one is forcing you to buy it day one or at all for that matter.
4. I don’t think anyone is “desperate” for a new game. This year alone there has been some first class games released all over the shop. Could it just be that all the critics are right and this is a good game? Not overhyped, not over exaggerated, just a bug free, well made bit of fun.
I would have thought someone in their 50s would be better at not judging a book by its cover…I learnt that when I was like 10
@GeeEssEff
A good game is a good game yes, but a game that may appeal to one person will not appeal to another. However reviews and scores you would think would then be balanced. A 9 is almost perfect, a 10 is perfect. I disagree that a platform game, however good, is a perfect score. Bug free and fun does not meet a 10 score, which I was perfectly capable of assessing at age 10.
The fact that it is rated so high for the limited type of game that it is, just tells me that the review scores are unreliable and steers me away from it because it is scored so high. For reference, Baldurs Gate 3 was also given a 10 by Push Square, and there is literally no way this game is of the same calibre of a game that is the best RPG in living memory.
Also almost forgot, there are 2 negative points listed in the review, but it still hits a 10
@WanderWhere You have contradicted yourself. You say one game might appeal to one person but not the other and then start making blanket statements about what reviewers should be scoring games. Platform games obviously don’t appeal to you…that doesn’t mean that they can’t appeal to other people. When someone scores a game they have to score it for its own merits and take it for what it is, not compare it to every game that has ever existed. BG3 is exceptional and I couldn’t agree more it’s a 10 but it’s not comparable to Astro Bot in the same way it would be dumb to compare Gran Turismo 7 and Alan Wake 2. If games only got 9s and 10s based on how big they are and how much freedom they offered then most indies would never score higher than a 4. If these things are what you look for then fair enough but to suggest YOUR metrics for liking a game should apply to everyone else show a lack of empathy and frankly symptoms of being a sociopath. Also a 10 is not “perfect” as perfection doesn’t exist.
At the end of the day I can accept you saying “this game is not for me” and moving on but passing judgement on it when you haven’t played it and even worse, passing judgement on the people who enjoy it is just childish. Can’t believe I’m having to explain this to a 50+ year old who should probably be setting a behavioural example to others. Grow up!
@GeeEssEff
The review policy states:
10/10 — Outstanding
The pinnacle of a given genre at the time of release, these titles raise the bar in virtually all critical categories. You can be sure that a game awarded this score has the highest quality presentation and expertly honed gameplay, but also breaks boundaries and pushes the industry forward in a meaningful manner.
I use reviews to decide if I will buy a product and also check the review criteria they use. When it does not look to my from my interpretation of the various reviews that it doesn't match that, then I question.
In my opinion, while the game looks well done and may meet the expectations of people who like platformers, I have not seen anything in Astrobot that breaks boundaries and pushes the industry forward in a meaningful manner, and so, as I said, in my opinion while the game may be good I do not find the review scores justified.
However by your comments because I questioned this, you feel that you are justified to make various comments above. I will let other people and the moderators consider if this was justified. I mentioned my age to explain the reasons for my lack of appeal for the game, not to provide spurious ammunition, and in hindsight being honest and forthright appears to have been a mistake.
@WanderWhere ok. Have a great rest of your day.
@WanderWhere Don't go there. Sometimes a game is just what people need in a specific timeframe and that's enough.
Well, whaddya know! It’s like while Sony was making games as a service, they were also making what potentially can be “one of the greatest (single player) platformers of all time”. Unbelievable that they’re capable of doing two things at once. 😱
So looking forward to play this. Sony have always been brilliant at platformers. Now bring back Jak and Daxter, Sly Raccoon and Ape Escape please.
@WanderWhere
You’re really overthinking the number at the end of the review. Read the review, research what the game is, decide if you want to play it or not. The number at the end is , like any review, someone’s opinion and TBH borderline irrelevant.
Also age has nothing to do with it. I’m 47 and think this looks great.
This game’s got some heavy lifting to do
That moment when you're one hour into a new game and you realise you're playing the game of the year 🙂
Buying at Full Price for £55 to support more of these kind of games.
I will sound old, but kids today don't understand how games like these would probably create much better gaming experiences and fun memories than most modern, grindy, live service trash.
I bought it day one, off course.
As a matter of fact, I sold Elden Ring (which was a horrible experience for me - but I'm glad some people are enjoying it) to buy this little gem.
Just replayed Astro Bot Rescue Mission on PSVR, two weeks ago. Team Asobi just know to make a great game. Those guys are so talented !
@NeonMullet I feel you, friend.
I was sunder the impression that Astro's Playroom especially blew their minds to people who never played the actual VR game.
And same here, maybe. Because, in Rescue Mission, you've got genius ideas everywhere AND one of the best uses of VR I've ever played.
Now it's just genius ideas. No VR. But it's still genius.
Anyway, I bought it, to support the team, and I'm eager to play it.
But I will also buy Max Mustard. Because Astro-clone or not, this one is in VR
Completed the main campaign last night (After steadfastly refusing to move or out the controller down!) and adored every last minute of it. Really reminded me how amazing the Dualsense can be and, alas, how few companies truly utilise it to its full. Loved the “themed” levels and the remixed versions of classic music (Uncharted and Zero Dawn) were magnificent. I was left wishing it had featured more if those levels like, say, a music based Parappa level but ultimately felt that whilst it’d be fun it may end up feeling like too much nostalgia and the developers just relying a bit too much on other game styles and mechanics …
… so, just got to clean up the final trophies and those surprisingly tricky challenge levels and I’ll be done but I can definitely see multiple playthroughs plus multiple visitors being sat down, handed the controller and forced to experience the fun and creativity of the game instead of thinking I “just play games”
Oh, and the final level made me smile when the “battalion” were revealed in the hull of the PS5 hull!
My only question now is how does a sequel improve upon this and when is it out?
The psvr is wierd when he wears it. Surely psvr2 would have made sense
An excellent game and a well deserved score. Just like Astro’s Playroom, this brings back original PlayStation era vibes. Well done.
I'm enjoying every second of this masterpiece 😍
Good game but nothing is like Ori or Mario. The added plus 2 because the PS5 needed it.
@WanderWhere Same here. Sorry for big comments. But I think this all the time with videos I watch/games I play/research and end up with large comments like this.
I think the game has great personality, has cameos/PlayStation characters which is 'fine' rather then more bots or original characters, done before themes and the cosmetics are fair for being in each themed level but not all are mechanically different either I assume, but does it break new gameplay ground nope.
I saw the screenshot of the mouse ears and went hmm helicopter like Rayman with his hair, maybe a sense of hearing, maybe something else because your small, but I haven't played the game but I can already guess it has nothing that mechanically in-depth for it. Balan wasn't great but each suit even for 80 to me went yeah I can sense each has a fair purpose even if not implemented well of the use cases, it still has a use. Like Rayman 3 did with it's suits which is why I bought Balan, I still got my fun out of it besides how bad it is for sure.
I think Astro is overhyped. The creativity is there no doubt and people wanting a break or something to mix in from the cinematic games or just something to play in depseration. But people do seem to have overlooked things for sure.
Many of us with backlogs probably don't feel it that's the thing. We are happy playing PS4, other PS5 or any older gen games, coming up to a compelling PS5/Series/Switch/PC/mobile game and then going back to the other or moving on to the next.
I remember a lot of average games I've played but I was also excited to play them as well usually more than the AAA ones I have no interest in or that got more focus as you do with a collector looking at those left behind, do they still stand out just didn't get sales/marketing or noticed among the competition.
I'm excited to play Astro sure but I also have researched/played older games I find are more mechanically compelling (platformers, shooters and racing besides a few hack n slashes, with better mechanical competition of ideas in older gens, many left behind because no one cares, marketing or not moving forward mindsets these devs have or whatever comes to mind even though I can make comparison to some like Nightingale is similar to MystCraft in it's realm cards for example) with FAR more compelling mechanics we never see again, because we never see them again and no Indies or AAA look to the past that deep, always the surface level, always recycling or whatever.
Part 2:
I don't see many B grade platformers ideas replicated or same level. Their quality differs but their mechanics were still unique. Yet any youtuber that looks at them would say yeah it'd be great if we see this again or ideas from this game. But we never do. Were glad to experience them us collectors but that's it. No one looks at them if they are a developer, no one looks at them not to copy paste the mechanic but get inspiration from them for something else which is what I do when I play them and see modern games and go this could have this here and here based on what cores they have, and what they miss (in my opinion/the ideas I have come to mind).
Other than say Ride 4 having a Forza Motorsport 1&2 region mechanic expanded upon I can't say I've come across similar in the racing genre or many others as many devs just copy and paste to compete.... even the rewind system for the genre, same studio (not same staff) did that rewind system, had RPG elements, Grid 2008 dumbed it down to 5 uses of rewinds and cut the RPG stuff, Forza Motorsport 3 dumbed it down to infinite and whatever it detects as a rewindable spot, and it's been that way from 2009+. What a waste of experimenting dumbed down so far and stagnant. Now the racing genre is just race, time trial, drift/elimination if your lucky. Forget unique modes, slight changes to be like 3 different drift modes or last man standing. It's all licensing these days, tracks/cars. Even Wreckfest we can't even have Flatout style (predecessor) flinging the driver target practice. It's just derbies and wow buses/motorised sofas. Cool but hardly changes up the gameplay. I can go to TOCA 3/V8 SUpercars 3 or DTM 3 or whatever for PS2 and DS/PSP/PS2-Xbox-PC are all different. DS/PSP have missions, console/PC has it's content. It's not just multiple car classes, it's challenges, modes. We don't get that anymore it's all stale. Even a project by Behaviour the Dead by Daylight devs (me I know fro Scaler/Wet) had a car in some sci-fi worlds. No idea what's come of it besides concept art. The fact things are so simple these days that that's amazing because realism/simplicity of using things.
I can't even say hey this Sega Rally like Indie should have more to it. Because the audience of players are too nostalgically stupid to care. Too emotionally satisfied.
I'll stick to enjoying Sega GT's car parts mechanic (not cosmetics, not parts to buy I mean a car building mode and using other cars chassis) that I think WRC 2023 did.
Cover shooters varying of moving around walls in certain ways. You get the idea. Creativity has just gotten weaker.
Part 3:
(many MP shooters modes, boring environments, where is the Ironsights of moving environments with shipping containers, sure it's a Black Ops clone but the maps move, most games have static maps, it's boring and my problem with MANY games having to be PERFECT not allowing the Infamous 1 dynamic decisions but easy gameified points to enter a story mission of Second Son, we just don't see it anymore, where is the The Club being a modern shooting gallery, we don't get this kind of unique take on things anymore, too safe, those games just came to mind that's all) or whatever comes to mind but still ends up very safe and done to death. As a few examples of games.
I am annoyed I can come up with animal abilities for better navigation/quest access in BIomutant, oh no we have gliders (other features, a merchant like BOTW I'll never find again) and vehicles but why can't I dig, fly, swim? I have to do a quest to get a jet ski? Like why? Why can't it be I have animal abilities and if someone doesn't have that ability they can still use the Jet Ski. Why can't we have more options not 1 option? Does it make the Jet Ski redundant not completely it may be faster and still relevant. You play as an animal that can walk on their legs, pees on checkpoints and 4 legs sprints in an apocalypse because animals that anthropomorphize but THAT's TOO FAR when it has gas immunity for 5 gas types. Why else do you think I came up with the abilityi aspect, if Sims can have it for human/pet traits or I can see Space Station Silicon Valley have robot animals with neutral and ignore you or aggression to other robot animals and they have their abilities of a fox that launches itself with a burst of speed for gaps, gorilla climbs vines/swings, etc besides using a mouse that a dog won't attack a sheep like logic. Like some of these developers I swear have little imagination, enough but not broad enough for the gameplay, just the bare minimum. For audiences to be 'simple' or devs really are just those types of people with no good ideas to think deep up to prototype them. Their skills, their time, their visions, their publisher demands, whatever the case.
Part 4:
Why can't we have taped, magic infused or fibre tightened weapons in Nightingale or more tools/weapons, or an understanding of what survival games do right with quality of life, general world features to make players compelled, whether they grind Iron farms in Minecraft or use mods with machines, players stretch the limits of games, developers don't anymore.
But oh it's fine in Ark because it fits the cave people putting things together. Why do devs have so little imagination is the kind of question i find myself asking a lot these days.
Foamstars has 2 done to death modes yet I can think of a surfboard mode, a foam clean up mode, chemicals to mess with the foam, traps and more. They barely come up with anything that useful to use the foam for. Who prototyped that game long enough. They just don't have that mindset, too much money focus then to be creative with the worlds/core mechanics. It's just sad. It annoys me with modern gaming, money, graphics, basic mechanics and bare minimum ideas. Or fair stories but the gameplay still is basic.
There is prototyping for games, and there is what Astro does is pull inspiration from the games...
(like many Indie platformers and why I've not been impressed by them either, they either don't have the talent which is understandable or they just don't get the genre, they go oh presentation of characters, basic movests, sometimes one cool one and the rest is just weak to the flow of gameplay or FUN factor in it, they don't need minigames but I can still enjoy a Spyro 1 with more fair pacing of new moves and level design/secrets, some are unfair but I still get tested, many Indies or modern games are just that, modern, empty feeling at times to be too simple but I find myself bored with them, still finishing sure but still bored and disappointed with them)...
it does but that's just recycling mechanics or aspects from those games, it's not that original, it doesn't fill in gaps those games don't offer either regardless of platformer then horror, RPG or open world contexts.
Sorry so big.
The temptation is to play this with the PS5 controller speaker doing its thing, but I played the game on a good pair of headphones before and, oh my, the audio is really superb in this game, so much depth of sound that I'd missed playing it the regular way. It really is great pumped directly in to your head 😁

Agreed. I never buy new games digitally.
This sounds absolutely amazing. The original is one of the few games I have the Plat on. I’m not a trophy hunter and usually just move on after it gets grindy. That being said, I will buy this for sure, but I won’t spend a penny over £30. Will pick it up on offer in a year or two.
