In the past couple of years, developers have attempted to reclaim the term "expansion". Arguing there's a difference between traditional DLC and fully-fledged add-ons, the likes of Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty and Horizon Forbidden West: Burning Shores have been used as poster childs for the movement. Whether there really is a difference between the two is up for debate, but if battle lines had to be drawn, Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree would laugh off claims it’s "just a bit of DLC".
FromSoftware has returned to its open world masterpiece with a gigantic add-on that borrows the Andrea True Connection hit as its prime descriptor: “More, More, More.” Shadow of the Erdtree doubles down on all the hallmarks of the 2022 base game in a new location, complete with extra boss fights, fresh NPCs and quests, and so much more gear. It's an extension in the 15 to 20-hour range if you stick purely to the main path, but set in the Realm of Shadow — where half the entire map forms optional content — critical progression only scratches the surface.
Having fulfilled the requirements to enter the new area, you'll be presented with a landmass on roughly the same scale as Limgrave, the Weeping Peninsula, and a bit of Caelid combined. It's a sizeable expansion of the world that brings back the same structure as the original title: select Sites of Grace direct you along the main path, Legacy Dungeons represent grand locations to explore off to the side, and further optional catacombs, caves, and pits densify the map. It's more Elden Ring, which is both a fantastic and ever so slightly anticlimactic thing. Magnificent in the sense you have the chance to return to one of the PS5's all-time greats with new content, but it's hard not to shake the fact you're just going through the motions again.
New locations are what thwart that unfortunate feeling most of the time. Following in the footsteps of Miquella, the DLC spans towering castles, lush ancient ruins, sinister woodland, menacing mountains, and more. It manages to offer much more visual variety in a smaller space than the base game does, making each zone distinct in both look and feel. Some of the most enthralling places in the Realm of Shadow are entirely optional and take considerable effort to even reach, so venturing off the core narrative path will prove just as rewarding as overcoming any mainline boss battle.
And what a set of boss fights awaits. FromSoftware has dialled its encounter design up to 11 in Shadow of the Erdtree, with new shape-shifting villains to eliminate alongside a fresh set of accomplices that populate the side dungeons. The brutal difficulty returns — Shadow of the Erdtree is very much endgame content despite the fact you can access it before slaying the Elden Beast — coupled with new things to consider like elemental shifts and projections. While you'll have a better understanding of how the game plays based on years of experience at this point, the DLC makes up for it in the sheer damage numbers these bosses can produce.
One way to boost your own stats beyond normal level-ups is to engage with a new feature introduced in the expansion: the Shadow Realm Blessing. By collecting Scadutree Fragments and Revered Spirit Ash across the open world, you can increase your attack power and damage negation with the former and improve your spirit summons with the latter. The upgrades form a critical part of upgrading your character beyond their normal means as the standard levelling system will only be offering the most minute of enhancements once you're ready to enter the DLC area.
The system works well, providing reason to thoroughly explore new places. However, it's also emblematic of the expansion as a whole: Shadow of the Erdtree provides considerable amounts of visual newness, but never does it change the way the overall package actually plays. While there are new weapon types to experiment with, your build from the base game will remain more than viable from the start to the very end of the DLC. Only a single new armour set proved objectively better than what we had equipped going into Shadow of the Erdtree, and our Lordsworn Greatsword was never bettered.
Of course, gear acquisition in Elden Ring is about more than sheer stat developments; you can spec towards a certain damage type, become the most fashionable Tarnished possible, or customise for a certain weight load. However, such is the sense of familiarity coursing through the expansion that you never really feel the need to change things up or approach the game in a new way. It's still the same Elden Ring of 2022 in a big new playground. That's going to be music to the ears of some returning fans, but it's difficult not to feel like you're simply doing the same things over again. While there might be so much for the eyes to see, your button presses never differ. It just feels a bit too familiar, especially coming more than two years after the base game.
That sense of familiarity somewhat carries over into a few small technical drawbacks. Texture pop-in is once again a slight problem — particularly for grass out in the open world — while, rather strangely, it's incredibly difficult to see sometimes when the in-game clock is set to night. It's tough to say whether this is a glitch or intentional, but some of the visual backdrops (across the Scadu Altus especially) simply aren't there when you leave a Site of Grace. Yet they will be if you fast travel somewhere else during the same time of day.
Conclusion
By doubling down on what made the base game so sublime, FromSoftware has crafted an Elden Ring expansion that's just as great as it is familiar. Shadow of the Erdtree delivers more of the same style of content you loved two years ago rather than introducing new ways to engage. That's enough to consider it a fantastic expansion, though it's hard not to feel like you're just going through the motions again. With a new land to explore, a fresh set of bosses to fight, and extra lore to consume, it's so much more Elden Ring.

Yep I am on board. Very excited. Elden Ring is by far my favorite From Software game after playing them all. In fact, it was my favorite game of all time until Baldur's Gate 3 knocked it down to number 2.

Too familiar wouldn't be a problem if the base game didn't quite obviously run out of steam a bit before the end credits. It's a great game of course, but it is at it's very best in the earlier sections. If it is going to drag on, and then serve up another 20-30 hours of the same loop, it's a fair comment.
8 out of 10 is more like what the main game should have got for a score back at release. Elden Ring is definitely a 10/10 Soulsborne game, but to me, it was just Breath of the Wild, a real 10/10 game, with more crying...lol...

Push Square has the current lowest Shadow Of the Erdtree score on Metacritic as of the time of writing with an 8.
I remembered they also did the same with Armored Core, having the second to last score on the same page currently.
Exactly the same happened with Sekiro.
Only Demons Souls has a great score coming from Push Square from the recent releases, in comparisson to other sites.
But certainly PS is not among the fans of From Software apparently.

Please read the review rather than just looking at the score. It makes very clear that if all you want is more Elden Ring, then this is absolutely essential.

Also going through the review, it seems perfectly ok from the player pov. 8/10 is not bad and in this world of gaming reviews it requires a brave heart to give contrasting opinions especially for very popular games like Elden ring.
I have myself given above 200 hours on elden ring enjoyed most of time not all(due to repetitive nature, lower difficulty than expectations etc. many points same as there are many points to praise). I will give myself the base game 8-8.5/10 any day. Though still waiting for dlc and might play it on first day
Did re download the base game few weeks back, i was in middle of new game+ had totally forgotten what i was doing, so might just start a new game and see if i can finish again then move to this dlc, although the thought of some of the bosses again from start is daunting.
Review made me want to play it, but I know better. After 2 years I can barely remember a single thing about it, I'd need like 20 hours to get myself reacclimated. Plus I can't b/c no PS+ and I relied on the help whenever possible, it was my "playable" mode.
May try to convince my kid to hook up their laptop to the TV so I can watch a bit though. Hope their laptop can run it, it's 2 years old, and PC games tend to like to push the envelope.

I am just surprised that based on this review it didn't earn more considering it is a DLC and not a full game; and that usually these reviews are on the low-score end compared to others.

Since Elden Ring is a game stuffed to the gills with variety, “more of the same” is just what the doctor ordered.
Compare to Burning Shores which was a poster child of samey content and stale gameplay. Sure, Forbidden West was a pretty good game but the difference, compared to Elden Ring, is that after 200h of H:FW the last thing you want is an expansion. After 200h of Elden Ring I was begging for an expansion.
I’m not sure the author of this article understands what a DLC is. It’s a continuation of an already created game. It is not supposed to be a new game or play-style. If that were the case it wouldn’t be a DLC it would be a new game!!!

I'm going to go ahead and go against the grain here and say that "more of the same" is a very fair, and valid criticism. Particularly so in this instance, and especially when considering the amount of time it even took for SOTE to actually come out. 2 years is an incredible amount of time to wait for a DLC. You have to remember that back in the day that Dark Souls 2, Bloodborne, AND Dark Souls 3 all released in the span of just 3 years. And from the same developer no less. So for a simple DLC expansion (even if it is a rather large one) to take almost as much development time as 3 seperate games and to not really shake up the formula in any meaningful way, is a bit of a letdown to say the least. Even if at the end of the day it is good in its own right. And besides, an 8/10 isnt even a bad score. Not everything has to be a "10/10"
I started playing Elden Ring last night for the first time. I was on performance mode and it still seems to run inconsistent. Anyone know if there is something else I can do to get it to run smoother?
@Contimaloris I've heard others say if you run the PS4 version on PS5 it runs smoother. I never had any issues with how it runs though with the PS5 version

Holy smoke it's more of the same? Say it ain't so 😭. All joking aside 8/10 is a decent score and I didn't expect it to get more than that. I'll be buying this as soon as I actually have time to sink my teeth into it because I don't think it's the sort of thing I'll be content with just blasting through the main quest line..I like to discover everything in my own pace.
I do not care about the score, it is often just so obvious, that reviewers in the pro/contra section write something down, only to fill a quota. And in this case it makes very little sense to criticize that it is more of the same.
What I would appreciate is, if the main PushSquare reviewers could write down their philosophy on reviewing a game to get a better understanding in general.

@Contimaloris Check that you have the HDR mode activated, which turns on the VRR with your TV. Game is unplayable for me without this mode, but super smooth with it.

It makes sense. They were perhaps expecting new mechanics or updates to existing ones. Maybe an update to the Ash of War system to have switchable skills or new weapon categories with completely new movesets for example.
If what's avaliable are weapons still using movesets from Dark Souls 1 like the base game of Elden Ring...yeah I can understand why some people would find that lacking. It's the reason I find Elden Ring overall quite lacking despite enjoying it. After several games of the same combat and same animations, it's time From Software does something different because they're beginning to remind me a bit of Bethesda where eventually we'll all be saying whatever new game From Software does is "just Dark Souls but in [insert setting here]".
Elden Ring is already that, Dark Souls but in an open world setting complete with the same combat, lore, quest design and exact same writing. Even the overall plot still is technically Dark vs Light with an undead curse.
Maybe that's amazing to new players but it's been four games of this and even the majority of the characters in Elden Ring are just retellings of Dark Souls characters. I imagine even the new characters in the DLC.
Sometimes Push Square reminds me the IGN tactics when Metroid Dread was released: give a relatively low score to a universally acclaimed game that collects 10/10 everywhere, so that you stand apart from the mass and everybody will talk about you. A 8/10 to Shadow of the Red tree, like a 7/10 to SMTV... there is something phony here.
Personally, I'm looking forward to more of the same Elden Ring in the DLC. Whatever FromSoftware makes next in the souls formula will be more of the same too, and I'm happy with that.
@TruestoryYep From's last game was Armoured Core 6, Sekiro was a big shake up and has had a massive influence on action games, Bloodborne was a also a big shake up and despite what you think the shift to an open world was huge for From with ER. As for the expansion well it does add a new weapon type and it does add new systems and features.

@Kidfried How many Undead Nightmares are out there? That was an exception not norm. Shadow of the Erdtree does shake things up world wise though as it takes place in a darker more twisted version of the main world. Played the Artorias of the Abyss expansion for Dark Souls? Its kinda like how that feels compared to the main game.
The problem with this review is it feels like they were going in expecting Elden Ring 2 rather then an expansion to Elden Ring "1".

I don’t want to be perceived as overly critical but for me “more of the same” doesn’t really apply to DLCs the same way it does to sequels. We are buying it because we want more of the same… I was perfectly satisfied with FF16 dlc and it was precisely more of the same, and I’d gladly buy more of Stellar Blade if I could.
@Kidfried Are they an exception because the DLC is sitting at 95% on MC so if anything 8/10 is the exception. Anyway i don't care about the score hence i never brought it up, my issues are with the review not a score.
I think the issue with you is the need confirmation bias, its why you're praising and defending it because its telling you all the things you wanted to here going in. Of course checking out the other reviews and you may find PQ's opinions are not shared by all 🤷♂️
This reviewer really thinks that none of the 100 new weapons in this DLC are better than the Lordsword Greatsword? That's how you know this ain't serious.

HDR and VRR are two separate settings both on your TV and on the PS5. You can have HDR on and VRR off without problems...
HDR are manipulating the colors to give you the feel for more natural lightning on the graphics while VRR (if your TV is a 120 HZ tv and supports it) takes a 40+ fps game and runs it in 120 hz.
So, you should ask @Contimaloris if he/she has a 120 Hz TV and if so, activate 120Hz Mode on it together with VRR in the PS5 settings. If he/she doesn't play Elden Ring on a PS4 that is, then you should suggest to play it on a PS5 instead

@Fudo Yeah, that sounded elitist by the reviewer. Guess he was afraid to change up his build too much to work with the new weapons?! My *****'s Stars build is running circles around any Lordsword Greatsword build I can make, so it's all about using the runes most efficient for the build you want to make, I'm sure the new weapons will be great with the right setup.

The comments section of push square was once a fun place to read and comment on games and articles. These days it’s just a constant barrage of criticism and toxicity. Kinda sums up the modern gaming industry and gaming community in general.

But I agree, I have heard so much negative things about No Man's Sky, Nioh 1+2, Rise Of Ronin, Horizon FW and so on here and on another forums but I just gave up and shut of my brain for most haters. Poor review. By anybody's standards FromSoftware have quite clearly knocked the ball out of the park with this enormous DLC. Saying "8/10 is great" is weasel words when some throwaway indie tosh that was knocked up in a couple of afternoons will get 10/10s. Despite the rhetoric there has always been a bias against these games going back years to the original Demon's Souls.

I’m getting this dlc eventually but I’m not optimistic about it improving the quality of the final stretch of game. I’m not a fan of how From have ramped up the difficulty of the bosses, so much so you have to choose cheesy builds or memorize a dozen untelegraphed moves to defeat them. Dark Souls 3 had the perfect balance of difficulty and fun.

This site literally gave 100 score to REMASTERS and has the courage of giving Shadow of the Erdtree an 80 for "being more of the same", you cannot make this up

@Arnna It's extremely laughable to think gamers can afford every single game releasing, try them out for themselves before deciding if they like it or not. When reviewers get them for free and give you a fair idea before making a purchase.

I don’t care how hard this is. High difficulty suits the style of game. The people that complain about FROM difficulty don’t bother to experiment with builds and using different weapons and armour. They just sit on metacritic and whine like babies about a game that might not be suited to them. There’s always Assassin’s Creed or Ghosts Of Tsushima of God Of War for those gamers.
This is easily a 9 or a 10, the DLC is bigger than most full games and it's very intricate and well designed.
