The first four minutes of the ludicrously titled Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin set the scene perfectly. There’s a cutscene of a dark knight annihilating a platoon of soldiers while he carries an unconscious princess on his shoulder. Then you’re in a boss battle against a multi-headed creature without context or justification that begins with a man shouting “Bring it!” and ends without resolution. Next there’s a scene of a man walking through a cornfield while Frank Sinatra’s My Way plays only for it to cut out right before he sings “My Way”. And then, finally, a tutorial where you learn how to hit a goblin with a big sword.
That’s the first few minutes of the game: no explanation, no reasoning, just a bunch of stuff that doesn’t really make sense all thrown together. We had to watch this again after we’d finished the game just to make sure we weren’t having a stroke or something, but no this is how the game begins and it only gets sillier from there. Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin is an unholy mess of a game, a spectacular car crash of befuddling ideas, nonsensical design choices, and an approach to taste and common decency that would best be described as cavalier.
Stranger of Paradise is a Team Ninja developed spin-off to the original 1987 Final Fantasy, a game that released while actor Ronald Reagan was President of the United States, shoulder pads were in, and video game stories were slight. In that game the villain Garland was little but a handful of sprites cobbled together in the image of a knight, the final obstacle in an 8-bit Japanese role playing game, devoid of rhyme or reason or meaningful backstory. Stranger of Paradise tells an original tale featuring a mostly new cast of characters that attempts to set the scene for Final Fantasy by giving its villain Garland context.
Do we need to know why Garland is a baddie? Like finding out that Willy Wonka's dad was a cruel dentist in Tim Burton's ghastly retelling of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory or that Darth Vader was an emo kid tricked into literally upsetting his wife to death, sometimes we just don't need to know. Sometimes, the mystery shouldn't be looked upon as a hole in the narrative, but rather an infinite opportunity for us to fill in the blanks ourselves. But hey, that’s just us, and Square Enix has other ideas.
The story of Stranger of Paradise is weapons-grade nonsense from start to finish. There are parts that make Kingdom Hearts look like an episode of The Wire. It’s all told using characters that are walking tropes sporting Final Fantasy™ haircuts talking absolute twaddle about chaos and crystals with about as much fervour as the speaking clock. And it’s given to us entirely straight-faced, full of melodrama, without humour, without any appreciation for how laughable the material is, like a Zack Snyder directed Devil May Cry movie.
We’ve yet to mention how hideous looking Stranger of Paradise is so let’s talk graphics. When you begin the game you’re given the option of prioritising framerate or resolution, but this is basically a troll since the framerate chugs regardless, and the visuals are utterly foul in either mode. There’s jagged edges galore, appalling lighting issues, and a blurriness during gameplay that has to be seen to be believed. It’s like watching an old VHS on an 80 inch television through a glass screen door. Even if you squint your eyes this still looks like an early PlayStation 4 game.
Without hyperbole we can say that this is honestly one of the most visually upsetting video games we’ve ever reviewed, so much so that the blurriness – more pronounced in outside environments – actually started to give us a headache. Pictures don’t do it justice – in motion Stranger of Paradise is genuinely abhorrent at times, an all you can eat buffet of aesthetic awfulness on practically every conceivable level and then some we’ve probably yet to imagine.
Better is the music. There’s the aforementioned Frank Sinatra track, a little bit of nu-metal, some pulsing synths, and a whole lotta choirs going AHH AHH AHH. It’s all pretty rousing stuff, and one particular classic Final Fantasy motif is given special reverence during the story in a way that is really quite endearing.
Combat is similar to Team Ninja’s Nioh series only nowhere near as difficult. It’s third-person slice-'n'-dice action in which you chain together standard combo attacks with more elaborate finishers and attempt to build up your enemy’s break meter – once you do enough break damage the enemy will collapse and you can finish them off in one hit with a simple tap of the circle button.
The bigger, flashier moves in combat require MP and at first you only have two bars of the stuff. But finish off enough enemies by breaking them and you’ll gain MP which means more flashy moves, more mayhem, more MP. You can build up to six MP bars in total, but if you die you lose MP bars as punishment.
You can switch jobs on the fly which offers another tactical element to combat – if you’re in battle with a boss that is vulnerable to physical attacks then you might want to be a Warrior, but if you get low on health and you’re out of potions, switching to White Mage might save your life. Combat is generally quite fun, but the boss battles are where the game shines. These sometimes multi-part encounters against classic Final Fantasy monsters are big and bombastic and quite challenging at times.
And so there you have it: Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin. It got a bit spicy in parts, that review. We had to get the old thesaurus out a couple of times. But can we shock you with a twist ending? Honestly, despite all the problems, the graphical horrors, the insipid dialogue, and the bizarre tone, we actually liked it quite a bit. Maybe Sammy will take us out back and bury us with all the other reviewers who've lost their marbles over the years but we gotta call 'em like we see 'em.
Hear us out: there’s something earnest about Stranger of Paradise. At the start of the review we compared the game to a car crash, and we stand by that and all of the criticisms we threw at it. But you have to remember that some people like watching demolition derbies. Some men just want to watch the world burn. And so while we might have been laughing at Stranger of Paradise as often as with it, we genuinely had fun in our 35 hours playing. It’s utterly ridiculous, and a total mess, but for what it’s worth, it's a fun mess.
Conclusion
Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin thinks that it's Daniel Craig's James Bond but it's actually Austin Powers. There's barely a moment in the game that isn't stretching credulity, be it the absurd writing, bewildering story, or inane characters. There's a host of technical issues, too. But somehow, despite everything, it manages to fail upwards and be a pretty good time. Maybe we've lost the plot but we liked it.

Looks boring since the first gameplay videos
All of the negatives bar the graphical issues look like positives to me, looks like a buy for me😂
i think for their first attempt at this genre , they did well enough.
7.5 for me
Going up against ER and HFW and others must be really hard if your game isn’t amazing.
This is probably a fair review but I have a feeling I'll enjoy this a lot
The game's ugly AF but the demo was a lot of fun.
@GorosBat Same, I actually ordered it today
This review encapsulated everything I expected the game to be, and despite the messy visuals, I’m going to enjoy the hell out of it, and play it myyyyy wayyyyy.
I'm honestly very tempted to get this.
If anyone has any questions about this game then let me know and I'll do my best to piece together an answer.
For me it's 7.5 from demo, never understood that people take one review as gospel. Best too get a few reviews to judge or try for yourself lots of times have not agreed with reviews.
Then a must game after been updated, fixed and heavily discounted.
You got me at "an approach to taste and common decency that would best be described as cavalier."
Sounds chaotic.
@Voltan If you think this is for you then it probably is. This game has cult following written all over it. It's so dumb, and has a lot of problems, but then so do Jean Claude Van Damme movies and I still watch those.
@Futureshark You're not prepared for this. There's one scene in particular which I was going to mention but it was too spoilery so I didn't and it actually made me laugh out loud. I've seen actual comedy movies that didn't make me laugh like that.
I want it, but I might cancel it for now and get Deedlit in Wonder Labyrinth or something instead. I'll wait for the price drop on this one.
@Ultrasmiles What? This is an action game made by Team Ninja, and they've been making such games for decades. Far from their first attempt. It's like saying Mario Odyssey was Nintendo's first attempt at a platformer.
eh i might try it out when its much cheaper later on but after trying out the demo i was never too excited about this game. all i want is to hear some news about a release date for 16 and a offical announcement for r7-2
This will be a fun game to pick up for 10 or 12 bucks during a Black Friday sale.
You made me want to buy this but I don’t have time!
I´m sold, sometimes its good to play a bonkers game. We have to thank the japanese, the western games are sometimes too serious.
Seems like can wait for the price drops. HFW is keeping me busy still. Shame its coming out after such a busy month!
So basically a severe price drop is needed before I get this
It's a case of looking past its many, many flaws. The core combat was SUPER fun (and surprisingly deep) from those demos, but the visuals and overall presentation is pretty ugly.
For people that are turned off by the difficulty presented by Soulsborne games, this literally has a "Story" mode where you just mash the buttons without any real consequences.
Eh.
Imma skip this and I don't think I'll buy it actually.
Square has been dropping in quality lately. At least ForSpoken was delayed because that looked to be another meh game.
I haven't been able to play Elden Ring and GT7 as much so it's all good.
This is a game that I will be excited to ***** on if I can get it for ten dollars.
@JB_Whiting yeah the difficulty slider is exactly why I tried the demo and I loved it even though the graphics are meh. Who knows after a lot of practice I might even get in the real souls games one day.
@JB_Whiting Weirdly, story mode is actually the default difficulty. I played it on Action mode because I assumed that was normal and they'd made a mistake making Story default but who knows? On Action it's still easier than Nioh, on Story you can button mash through most encounters from what I tried.
You mean back at a time when games were supposed to be fun and the story took a backseat to the gameplay, and the story just had to be functional and somewhat entertaining? Sounds good to me.
I can't be the only one that thinks this and Babylon's Fall are the same game lol
At least, they are similar in quality!
@Gbarsotini Exactly, the western influence on storytelling having to be either serious or obviously attempting to be funny is annoying, and Japanese games can be refreshing in that sense!
Sounds like this game is pure....
...chaos.
🥁
@johncalmc Thank you so much for the review. The demo made me question what “quality” means. For as bad as I could say things are, I felt like it cut through that and spoke to me in sure a pure way. This is an example of a game that cannot be quantified into a number out of ten. It’s on a totally different scale and I personally am really excited for the full game. To quote my wife about the game as I was playing the demo, “Don’t you expect better out of a Final Fantasy game?” Absolutely yes and absolutely no, all at the same time
After playing all three tests, I'm so ready for this once it goes on sale. The gameplay was so fun for me and the negatives here sound like a breath of fresh air. The last beta test had me at Jack blaring not "Limp Bizkit" in a middle of a monologue.
Edit: Heads up, Best Buy has a pretty sick Steelbook for this game if any of you are interested in collecting them.
I attempted the demo and those first 2-3 minutes of the cutscene with Garland kidnapping Princess Sarah was easily the best thing.
Surprisingly brutal, nicely shot & made Garland rather intimidating and a force to be reckoned with in such a limited time.
Then it suddenly went to Jack and co and... Yeah It totally lost me.
Utterly nonsensical, it looks ESPECIALLY ugly with some horrific art direction/colours on a base PS4 (which it really shouldn't as Nioh 1 & 2 look great).
The writing was rather rancid as well. I only played about ten minutes of gameplay on "action" (which was very button mashy and not all that challenging) before deleting the demo.
I wouldn't play the game proper even if you paid me
@somnambulance The score on the end of this review is almost irrelevant honestly. I settled on it because five is bang average and I liked it probably 7/10 but the tech issues dropped it to 6. The 6 does not matter. It could by anything. If this is your kinda game you're going to love it, and everyone else is just going to be sat wondering if they're actually seeing what they're seeing or having some kind of acid flashback.
Stranger of Paradise is review proof. It's the sort of game in which most of the things that people are criticising about it are things that will sing to a small number of people. Stranger of Paradise - like Deadly Premonition or something - has its own review scale and our mere mortal numbers just don't apply here.
Definitely don't have time at the moment to play this, but I'm definitely intrigued to give it a shot sometime down the line. Reviews for this game are kinda all over the place. High is an 87 and the low is somehow a 20!
Team ninja after tomonobu itagaki: Yaiba ninja gaiden z, ninja gaiden 3 (practically killed a franchise that could have earned souls status if stayed consistent), dead or alive xtreme/ 5/ 6, metroid other m, dissidia ff nt and nioh 1/ 2. Why do they still exist.
This review made me think of Shadow the Hedgehog which is promising. I'll definitely check out the demo at the least.
@Baccaman
Different sites, different people, different opnions
@Grumblevolcano If you think "Shadow the Hedgehog" and the first thing you think is "promising" then I reckon this is probably the game for you.
@johncalmc so there was a lot of talk about it being a souls-like when it was first rumoured. Is this actually the case (corpse runs, souls, bonfires, short-cuts etc.) or is it simply an action RPG?
I still don't understand why AA games get slaughtered for their graphics, whereas 8/16 bit games get a pass. So what if it looks like a ps3 game? Those "retro" game look like NES games and most people (including reviewers) don't seem to mind.
@Arisen DmC was superb. Also Nioh 1 and 2 were very well received both by critics and gamers.
@colonelkilgore This isn't a Soulslike at all. I was actually pretty surprised because I hadn't played the demo and I'd heard all the talk of it being a Soulslike but then... well, it's not. It's a bit hard in parts and very occasionally you can unlock a shortcut and that's the only similarities really.
No souls/runes/bloodechoes/amrita and so there's no hunting your body to retrieve lost stuff. It honestly bares no resemblance to Dark Souls beyond being a third person action RPG.
@naruball I tend to agree generally - the problem here is that the graphics are like broken or something. There's something wrong with the game. At one point when I was outside a light shone, and I swear it was so bright I recoiled. It was like looking into the sun. Then a second later it was gone. The whole thing has a blurry look - I don't know what's going on. It's like they made it really low resolution and then stretched it out or something. It's actually horrible to look at in parts.
@johncalmc cheers bud… bit disappointed by that but at least I can properly adjust my expectations now.
Do you think you ‘may’ have liked it less than you normally would have due to the fact that you wanted to be playing Elden Ring but couldn’t as you had to be playing this?
I really enjoyed the gameplay of the demo, however the story was nonsense and Jack is edgier than Shadow the Edgehog, definitely a sale item, just for the gameplay
Been enjoying the combat in the demo, but yeah, this game is ROUGH!
@colonelkilgore Not really. I think... it's really hard to review this game, honestly. I could've given it an 8 or a 7 or anything right down to a 4. The NME review at 2 is an anomaly for me... I think they're having a mad one there. Everything else looks on the money. You could score it anything.
It's definitely one of those read the review, don't look at the score games. The 6 really doesn't tell you a whole lot. Some people will LOVE this game. Others will hate it. It's like a really dumb movie or a novelty song or a trashy tv show that you love despite all common sense telling you not to.
So mostly I enjoyed my time with it. First few hours are bit slow, but once the story picks up during the second mission when an actual pirate just turns up for no reason. From there it gets better as it goes on. It's a wild game. I recommend it to everyone and nobody. Like I said, it's review proof. There's something unquantifiable here.
It's not like That Last of Us where it's like, if you like story and third person action you're almost certainly gonna like it because it's like best in class at that stuff. If you don't then you probably won't. This is more like... Stockholm Syndrome. It wins you over and you have absolutely no idea how it managed it. Not everyone will get that.
Considering I seen other reviews give this game an 8 and even an 8.5, with this one being a 6. Reviews don’t matter for this game lol you’re either gonna love it or you’re gonna hate it and quite frankly I love it. 18 hours into the demo
@johncalmc thanks for that. This makes perfect sense to me. In such a case, graphics indeed become a serious issue.
Doesn't sound like a day one purchase, but when I eventually beat Nioh 2 I'll buy this for a laugh.
@GorosBat i was thinking the same thing ! so bad that it’s good! 🤣 definitely worth buying it
@johncalmc fair enough pal. I was surprisingly excited about this game (though never played any of the demos)… but having read your review, as well as finding out it’s definitely not a souls-like it’s tempered my feelings about it.
Will probably wait and pick it up for £20 or so towards the end of the year as a result I reckon.
@Reeneman you’re boring.
"Main character is an edgelord"
Ah yes, it's like we're back in the brown/grey color palette of the late 2000s/early 2010s.
@Ultrasmiles it’s not their first attempt at this genre lol Team Ninja made the Nioh series
@Ultrasmiles How do you score something you have not played through yourself?
@naruball dmc reboot was made by ninja theory not team ninja lol and nioh may not be bad games, not a fan of them myself, I just had to write them to their otherwise poor 10 year cv.
@Arisen Nioh 1 and 2 won many best action game awards.
What are you on ?
@Arisen fair enough about DmC, but you can't call their output poor and ask how they still exist while you are aware that they made two incredibly well received games so recently. Whether you personally like them is irrelevant.
I think I'm gonna skip this purely due to me being not too fond of Tetsuya Nomura's writing (I find it cringey/bad dialogue), and Jack being an 'edgelord'. I guess I'm just gonna read the story spoilers
@danzoEX could be true but I’m not for sale for 70-80 €/USD. I don’t have to be exciting
A 6/10 "Not Bad", and part of the Pros is basically "It's FF". That's....depressing but pretty much exactly what I expected.
@Arisen Hyrule Warriors is really good (if you like this type of game), and dont you dare talk about Dead or Alive Xtreme.
But seriously, in my opinion they're good to great developers, with a few flops along the way (just like others companies), so i still trust them, the last games they made were great.
@johncalmc
Have too agree it's hard to score this, very niche/Marmite. That NME seems like someone peaed in the reviewers conflakes, comes of more edgelord that Jack.
@naruball Personally, I cannot bring myself to like team ninja ever since tomonobu's departure. Most gamers today don't remember, know or care about it but it was huge for fans back in the day. It's a very similar situation to how kojima left konami and people hated on them and metal gear survive.
@Dr-M it may not get fixed. I honestly wouldn't be surprised if they deliberately wanted this to look cheap, grainy and play out like a Z-list Movie
Honestly really wanna play this because of how bad it looks, the cheesy dialogue and hilariously bad cutscenes are all right up my alley.
Reading this cracked me up. It sounds like one of those games that is so bad I would still enjoy it anyway and get a good laugh out of it.
Give me this over that Chocobo's GP garbage any day and that's not saying much.
I’ve been playing the demo. The gameplay loop is really addictive.
But man this game is ugly. I think saying it looks like an early PS4 game isn’t accurate. This game looks worse than some late release PS3 games.
There’s no anti aliasing solution in the game. At all. And the environmental textures are just awful. No definition; it looks like a low budget Japanese PS3 release.
The character models are decent, though.
@RubyCarbuncle
I’d say give the demo a try. The gameplay loop is actually pretty satisfying.
This is one of those games where the core gameplay is very, very good. But it’s ugly as sin. Like one of the ugliest games I’ve seen out of a major developer in a long time. The presentation looks like it was made on a 360/PS3 budget.
I could see it becoming a cult classic down the road.
Seriously, how did we get to this? What happened? How has Final Fantasy gotten to this point? Its so sad.
Fantastic review! Made me laugh a lot 😄
The game sounds awful. I'm in 😁
I'm not even interested in the game but I saw that John reviewed it so it was defo worth a read.
'There are parts that make Kingdom Hearts look like an episode of The Wire.'
I can just imagine Mickey Mouse and Pluto doing that 5 minute investigation scene where they say nothing but the f-bomb.
Need to play the 3rd Demo.
For what I played on the last demo I would definitely play it as a Rental at some point.
HARD PASS, awesome review
Sounds fairly appropriate considering what Final Fantasy has become since the release of XIII.
I might grab it on sale at some point if the gameplay is good fun. Sounds like it'll be easy enough to enjoy in a 'bad movie' sort of way where you laugh at the lousy visuals and amateurish writing.
It looks shockingly bad but the demo did sorta endear me to it. And yes, I’ve completed Shadow the Hedgehog. Christ, I’m probably going to enjoy this.
Don't care about Final Fantasy but I love Team Ninja. This game looks like it's a lot of fun.
Tired of all these generic action RPGs coming out lately so this is going to be an easy skip for me.
@usaislie
So what if they won awards Deathloop won best game etc blah blah, doesn't mean for example like me, I lasted 2 hours playing hated one of the worst games I've played in awhile. Awards and reviews are nothing but a slight guideline these days nothing more, trust yourself and your gut,
"Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin thinks that it's Daniel Craig's James Bond but it's actually Austin Powers."
I would always rather watch Austin Powers over a Daniel Craig bond film.
I cant bring myself to play this mess when there are so many far better developed games ive yet to play. Im only tempted as it sounds so bad id like to experience it for myself.....
Not my cup of tea but I think ppl will appreciate the effort of trying something new with Final Fantasy.
Isn't final fantasy supposed to be ridiculous & weird
“Main character is an edgelord”
“The other characters are rubbish”
“Story is nonsensical”
This gon be the greatest game ever made
This could be a funny thing maybe not so bad.
@Would_you_kindly No not really fantasy does not mean weird and ridiculous. Final Fantasy 7 and 8/9 where quite good.
@Grumblevolcano Why not Shadow the Edgelord a missed opportunity.
@suikoden Same here. The game is way better than I expected.
I disagree this game is a solid 8/10 and I enjoyed this more than the boring slog horizon forbidden west good god aloy is a boring character lol
Sounds to me like a missed opportunity to make a great Final Fantasy souls-like game.
Tis a shame it went in this direction...I'll be waiting for Holiday sales.
At least this clears up my money to be spent only on Kirby now, so hooray.
@Uromastryx i meant for the "why do they exist" situation not the player review or whether they like it or not.
@Reyren I am pretty sure that you're okay offline because I am pretty sure I was offline at some point playing it. I can't see why you'd need always online. It's not like Dark Souls with invasions or messages or anything. The only online bit is that you can open a room and a friend/random can take over your other party members for a dungeon. It's very much a single/multiplayer split rather than a mix of the two like Souls or Watch Dogs or something.
@LazyLombax Sorry Lombax, but you only get a few words in the pros and cons section per line. I'll try harder next time. I will win your approval if it's the last thing I do.
@MFTWrecks played all betas and my first impression score is 7.5
@Matroska @danzoEX i thought the game was co developed but it seems only team ninja .
@johncalmc As I was reading this review, I was wondering who on earth wrote this spectacular piece… but by the end I knew this had to be yours. Brilliant review, John. Not only effective to entertain me for 5 minutes, but also useful to save me $60.
@sonicmeerkat But even Austin Powers had style and Tone-in cheekiness. This damn game however looks like it has none.
@Ultrasmiles That's like saying you saw all the trailers for a movie and can decide whether it's a rewards contender. Asinine.
@LazyLombax
Does anyone know how long the load times are in the PS4 version of this game? 🤔
@MFTWrecks i played all available jobs and experienced enough to know what in getting into
We need more so bad its good games and this looks like it's the gaming equivalent of a bats--t insane 80's fantasy movie I would have watched late at night on TBS like 15 years ago.
This same reviewer was too harsh on Monark too so I feel I can ignore this opinion.
This review is complete CHAOS!
Well, this review was indicative of a feeling for sure. I’d rather not want to waste my time if the game is half as cringe as the writing here…. Ouch.
It's not a bad game it is rough around the edges but I find Jack's Japanese VA to grow on me.
In short, from playing the demo i can say the game is rough and hastily cobbled together.
I mean... things like there being the ability to talk to townsfolk but inability to actually walk around town is jarring. Messy menus as well.
But, the combat and class systems are fun.
I wasn’t a fan of the demo, but I ended up getting the full game for free and it’s growing on me. I’m going to play through it in co-op with my brother which I’m looking forward to.
I wanted to like it and was willing to buy it but the demo shows that the game pukes loot at you in a bad way. It's not just overwhelming, it actually makes anything you earned in the previous dungeon pointless.
The rpg elements feel unnecessary , too but if they had made it a straight action game or made your loot matter, it would have been a great game, to me.
this just goes to show that the fanboys are incapble of differentiating the good games from the bad. s-e threw another turd at the wall and it did not stick! it's no wonder there was $0 dedicated to marketing. forspoken is next in line, except that game will be a financial loss of AAA proportions. in the next 6-12 months, we are likely to see s-e hit its lowest stock price of the past 15 years and if that happens, a buyout is imminent.
edgelords rejoice! a game you can finally call your own.
Ill wait until Final Fantasy Stranger of Paradise's price goes down for sale or clearance at Walmart.
i just bought WWE 2K22 to keep me busy and entertained anyway
Im hoping for a patch that adds a (mini)map and some more sorting options for inventory. In general I think the areas are way too dark. Also hoping for more quality content to come with the season pass - Id Love some legendary super bosses like Omega ^^ apart from that Id Score the Game between 7 and 8
I'm about ten hours into the game (via PS+ Extra) and I really like it. The characters are not interesting and the main character is indeed an edgelord, but the gameplay is great. The graphical and performance issues are all gone at this time, so the experience is not hindered at all by that.
I like Dark Souls and really like Final Fantasy, so trying this game was a no-brainer and I'm glad I did.
