The original release of PSP's Ridge Racer 2 could be criticised for being almost exactly the same game as its predecessor, only with a few more tracks and modes. However, that doesn't really matter today, especially now it's one of the rare Ridge Racer titles playable on modern consoles. With its one blemish now moot, what we're left with is some of the most joyous, stylish, and satisfying arcade racing available — if you're a PS Plus Premium member.
Essentially a series "greatest hits", this game cherry-picks courses and music from previous entries and features dozens of increasingly speedy vehicles to whip around all those sweeping corners. For fans in 2023, this is about as good as you can hope for — all the classics are here, and it's presented with crisp upscaled visuals, though it is a slight shame some elements remain untouched.
Ridge Racer's core appeal lies in its emphasis on over-the-top, beautifully smooth, endlessly fun power-sliding, and it feels just as good now as it did back in 2006 on PSP. There's nothing on today's market that provides such instantly rewarding arcade racing — it just feels fantastic to play. The boost mechanic also made its debut here, adding a small but appreciated extra layer to the action.
Its structure is very simple, with a series of World Tours comprising two or three races which require you to zoom from last to first. However, in an age where many racing titles are pushing open world extravagance, the stage-based approach is refreshing. A handful of other modes let you play single races, elimination, and time attack, and aside from gradually unlocking new cars, that's your lot.
Sadly, any multiplayer options have been stripped away, and so have the prizes for completing each World Tour, which rewarded you with things like opening movies for old Ridge Racer games. The only other frustration comes from AI drivers, who can be tricky to overtake. All in all, though, this is easily among the best classic games on PS Plus Premium. This is a timely reminder that, at their peak, arcade racers can easily rank among the most enjoyable video games you can play.

One of the few games that makes having Premium worthwhile for me personally
A fantastic game as Stephen says, but I'll need at least a few more reasons to sign up to Premium. Bit of a shame it's locked behind a subscription completely.
I owned the first PSP game digitally, but this one was disc only, I did have the disc, it but would have been nice if it was digital to play on the Vita. If I could buy it without subscribing, I probably would. I actually still boot up my PS3 for Ridge Racer 7, it still looks great in 1080p and 60fps. The one other arcade racer I really want to return is OutRun 2, even a port of 2006 would be great, but due to licensing it wont happen.
@ShogunRok you say that, but its what 15 to upgrade from extra? for about 400ish more games
if this was a stand alone release it would be 15+ on the store.
I don't need trophies or a platinum to enjoy a game but it certainly helps. That's one of the main reasons why I don't like premium much. I get the fact that there's plenty of gamers who really don't care about trophies but 2023 ain't 2006 just sayin. We've now had more PS consoles that have had trophy support in comparison to PS consoles that haven't
Is there any difference at all between the PS4 and PS5 versions?
This is a good one but nothing will top Type 4!
This game is amazing, easily in my top 5 for last year
@stvevan agreed yes I spent the £15 to upgrade just for this
@RevLimit no
@Ristar24 will they let us buy this at some stage or leave it as insentive to upgrade?
@JudgeDredd This was my favorite Ridge Racer as well. Probably the best looking racer on all of PSX. And it ran great. Granted, it wasn't nearly as ambitious Gran Turismo.
No trophies, huh?
This is the best Ridge Racer to release since 7.
I really want a Ridge Racer 8.
Edited: because Google keyboard replaced Ridge with Fidget
@dmk1198 Guess depends on their agreement with Sony, if was a digital release I'd buy it. Its quite good that I am able to download PS1 games I bought on PS3 'for free' with these new releases though.
@AndyKazama or even a compilation of previous games would be great, such a classic series. I'm still waiting for OutRun 3!
I do not have Plus (whatever tier is needed, naming is way confusing) and apparently you cannot simply buy the game. This is way inconsistent. Some classic games are shown as free to me since I bought the PS3/PSP/Vita versions ages ago while others, regardless if I have the old version or not, are offered only as part of the subscription.
How do u get the free games if you bought already on PS3? I'm not seeing that option
Playing a bit of this every time I boot up the ps5, before GOW…brilliant, and very nice remaster
Not interested in a subscription, this game should be available as a buy it now option.
@dmk1198 It's think its on select PS1 games on the new service. I dont subscribe to PS Plus, but was able to search and download PS1 Resident Evil and a couple of the PS1 Abe games if I seached for them on the store on my PS4, as I bought them back on PS3.
100% completed the first one on psp, loved it. Couldn't get into this one though. Think that's because it was so much of the same again. Will give it another go now at some point.
@Loamy I agree! Would love to see a remake of Ridge Racer 7 for PS5. At least in the mean time Ridge Racer 6 is playable on XBSX.
Enjoyed a lot of the RR (Rage+Ridge Racer) games on PSX, PSP (still playing the first one), PS2, ... Would love to see it come back this generation (+ other racer Motorstorm)
I just want a remaster of R4: Ridge Racer Type 4. By far one of the greatest soundtracks of any gaming genre.
One of the greatest racing games ever made.
