@Mortal "Square Enix put the target on themselves, to be fair, by releasing their own statements indicating that Rebirth hasn't met their expected sales figures."
I don't think they've released a statement on it. Do you have a link because I can't find anything official from them?
@Yorozayu Don't waste your time. That profile was created on April 1st and has mentioned either Xbox or gamepass in a 1/3 of the comments they've made here so far.
In other news, Rebirth is a great game, and although the numbers are by no means terrible, it's a shame more people haven't given it the support it deserves.
@GamingFan4Lyf No need to apologise, I didn't take it personally, you've never been that type of commenter.
I think applying a PC lens to console gaming hasn't been applicable for 40 years and still isn't comparable today. A lot of games often release completely unoptimised on a range of configurations, with the budget ones priced comparatively to console often performing horribly or being excluded entirely. It's also a completely different ecosystem with it's own unique challenges, the biggest financial one being piracy. It's impossible to apply a differing price structure to that platform or charge more with the disparity in performance.
"Despite liking the exclusives that have come to PlayStation, I do feel like Sony abuses its power as the market leader to nickel and dime its customers."
They absolutely do in some cases, you'll struggle to find a market leader in any field that doesn't do the same. I don't believe $10 more for a better version of a game is an example of that though, especially one that releases years later.
@GamingFan4Lyf I'm not defending anything. To put it simply, you believe extra work should incur no extra cost to the consumer, or in some cases, should be free. I believe the superior version of any product, one that takes more time to create and incurs most costs to develop, is perfectly reasonable to charge slightly more for. I don't care what anyone else does, it doesn't factor in to my opinion on that.
You're saying I've been conditioned to accept these "things". I'd suggest, being the Xbox fan that I know you are as I've called you out on your blatant bias in the comments here in the past, that you're projecting. Gamepass has conditioned gamers, particularly the xbox community, to not want to pay for anything, so your position doesn't surprise me.
@GamingFan4Lyf "Ghost of Tsushima Directors Cut was literally a cash grab because there was zero difference between the PS5 version and the PS4 Pro version running in backwards compatibility. It was literally $10 for the ability to use DualSense."
Not true. The PS5 version is 4K whilst the pro version is 1800p. The PS5 version also loads faster, even though the load times were already amazing. It supports 3d audio as well.
"God of War Ragnarok had no content differences, only looked better (sorry, but improved game settings aren't a reason to charge extra in my eyes). $60 for PS4 and $70 for PS5."
That's cool, maybe Sony can use that as an excuse to not pay the devs for the extra time it takes improving all those things.
The game not only looked better, it ran better as well. The pro versions framerate is all over the place in the 40 to mid 50 range, PS5 is solid 60.
"Even this site noted that 70% of physical discs bought in the UK were the more expensive PS5 version despite paying less with PS4 and upgrading. In my eyes, Sony charged you a $10 convenience fee to not go through the upgrade process (no thanks)."
And what percentage of that 70% were fully aware of the upgrade but wanted to own the physical PS5 version instead of a digital copy?. I know I was one of them. It was worth the extra $10 to me because I could do what I wanted with it when I was finished.
@Cutmastavictory That's different. I'm not talking about situations where the customer is told they'll receive something, I'm talking about instances where the automatic assumption is I should be entitled to this for free because I bought it once.
@GamingFan4Lyf There's been conflicting issues on the store for years. I don't have much hope in them ever addressing it.
The charged upgrade path I'm not against. I don't know when this mindset began with people who think because they bought a version of something years ago, they should be entitled to any future version of it for free. Improvements to framerate, assets, resolution etc, all take a significant amount of dev time and money. $10 for that is nothing.
@GamingFan4Lyf "I wouldn't put it past Sony to simply ignore that version because it's an "expired" way to have the game and force people to either subscribe to PS Plus Extra and claim it there or buy the game outright."
@GamingFan4Lyf It does suck, that has been evident for years, but let's not pretend that you weren't trying to imply it was a deliberate decision by Sony to restrict the upgrade for people who received the game via the collection.
Almost every game on the list is a successful established ip they bought. Unsurprisingly, only 1 of the 7 listed began development under their ownership.
@DennisReynolds Of course I'm not, I'm just pointing out the absurdity of it. You're saying they should have focused on a more powerful console 4 years ago instead of this. Had they done that it would have been more expensive anyway, which you probably would have been complaining about back then as well.
You're also saying we're being "conned" with the release of optional hardware, a product that won't impact the standard PS5's function or userbase in any way. Is every manufacturer that provides a more powerful version of a product conning the customer?
@DennisReynolds That extra "raw power" of the Series X has been negligible in every 3rd party comparison since launch. Not only would matching it have been pointless, but it would have cost us more, or lost them more on each one made.
What gets me the most about products like this is the unnecessary negativity around it. You're under no obligation to support this if it doesn't interest you, but why complain about it. If I spent my free time complaining on the internet about things I'm not interested in, I'd never get anything done.
@DennisReynolds Yeah good point. They should have released a £700 console in the middle of a pandemic, £250 above the price of the Series X, and £450 above the Series S, I'm sure it would have done fantastic at retail.
Anyway, I'm expecting this to be around £599. If they go above that they might struggle considering the small improvement to the cpu.
@Vault_74_Guy I understand. I'm not sure what the issue is but there seems to be some conflicts at the moment with the PS4 version running on a PS5. The update supposedly has a bunch of bug fixes along with graphic and fps improvements so it's worth waiting.
I believe the PS5 version is a separate download as well, so you'll have to reinstall it all anyway.
@NightshadeNL Evolve literally means to develop gradually. The responses here are focusing on bug fixes and disregarding everything else they've done to the game. A complete overhaul of mechanics and stats, of the skill tree, of cyberware, of combat, of vehicle controls, of the police system. They introduced vehicle combat, added a ton of new weapons, made changes to stats and perks on existing ones, added finishers for melee. Along with a massive amount of QOL improvements to multiple different systems and features in the game.
I could go on and on listing everything they've done, and it would be a completely separate conversation to one discussing bug fixes and performance alone. If they wanted to, they could have just fixed the bugs and framerate issues and sailed off in to the sunset with their millions. They stuck it out and delivered a vastly superior experience to what the game was at launch.
Nobody is celebrating or encouraging how this game began, they're acknowledging what it's become over several years.
@Deoxyr1bose I don't think this award is encouraging the notion of a comeback, and it's definitely not promoting the idea that things can just be fixed later. It's an acknowledgement of a team who spent 3 years working their arse off to correct their admitted failures. Should it have released the way it did, absolutely not, but they've "evolved" what was the most heavily criticised release in recent memory, in to something that's now received a lot of critical acclaim.
@MikeOrator You're not wrong, but with it being only 2 weeks away they'd be crazy to omit that from todays announcement. You've also got to wonder how that would even work. 4 isn't as good as previous entries but there's still a lot of fun to be had with it. It's on sale at the minute for £3.99 if anyone's interested in playing the upgrade, and all 6 dlc's are currently on sale as well until the 24th, separately or as part of the season pass.
@MikeOrator I would guess it's all of it, would be very strange of them to not upgrade the dlc.
@Cloud39472 I'm guessing you just missed the zero, but that number is over 50 million.
I agree though, none of these polls mean anything, particularly when they can be influenced by trolls. It also feels like certain people are currently working overtime to downplay the importance of framerate because of a certain upcoming 30fps game.
I've given it an 8 despite my frustrations with how poorly it runs, and I'm being generous. I don't see it getting better any time soon and will probably sell it on rather than hold out for further improvements.
I thought the demo was good, but it was the preview and boss challenge at the end that sold me. The skills from the challenge mode give a great sense of how much better the combat gets. I'm really looking forward to this.
@thefourfoldroot1 Same boat for me. I had one develop drift after years on the PS4, but so far so good on my launch duelsense. It has developed a couple of other issues after three and a half years though. The battery doesn't hold its charge as well as it used to, expected, and the spring in the R2 failed. It still works but it's a hair trigger now.
@HonestHick You're right, they did mention that. I can't recall exactly what was said but it would have caused conflicts with older titles.
@NEStalgia True, if we're being specific the only comparable example is the PS4 pro. I don't know the figures personally but I know it wasn't flying off the shelves.
This may do worse, we'll have to wait and see, but I think they know what they're doing. I have a feeling this is more of an experiment with their own studios to see what the proprietary tech is capable of before a proper launch with the PS6.
I didn't realise warranties were that short in the US, I'm shocked by that. Electronics are two years in the UK. Sony will state 1 year in their terms and conditions but our retailers offer more, so as long as you didn't buy from Sony direct they have no option but to honour it.
@HonestHick Understandable, to be honest I am as well. From listening to the Digital Foundry guys it seems the issue was likely power consumption and that would of been too big of a mid gen overhaul. This is more of an introduction to their proprietary ai and upscaling tech.
In reality though, 60 has been an option on almost everything released this gen, both first and third party. What this machine will hopefully do is allow us to enjoy that without a significant compromise in fidelity. It's not going to make poorly optimised games run any better.
@NEStalgia I don't believe this is a question of optimism. I'm offering a point of view from personal experience. I would also say it's a lot more realistic then the possibility of a net neutral scenario. This isn't a new concept, Sony have released several iterations of their consoles in most gens, from fats to slims, bigger hard drives to pros. I'm sure they have a far better understanding than you or I on what could potentially "cannibalise" their market.
I buy 99% of my electronics brand new for several reasons, I can afford to, I don't want them to be handled by someone else, and I want the manufacturers warranty. Having worked in a retail position when I was younger that sold secondhand games and consoles, I understand why that isn't an option for a significant amount of people though. I'm obviously using friends and family as examples to draw upon as well, but the primary reason I've encountered with consumers using a secondhand market is financial constraint.
Again, personal experience. I'm not speaking for the market as a whole, I'm sure there are a lot of people who just want a bargain. I'm just saying you're overstating the impact those sales have.
@NEStalgia I think your logic is way off here. I would argue that a lot of people who buy secondhand do so because they can't afford or justify the cost of a new machine at retail, and as a result they were likely never going to affect the sales of the base unit. You're also assuming that resold base units are directly sold to consumers. Right now I can sell my PS5 for around £230 at CEX, there's no telling how long they'll have to sit on that stock, and as mentioned, if they do eventually sell it, it will probably be to a customer who wasn't able or willing to buy a brand new anyway.
For those like myself, not only are we double dipping with a pro, but our second purchase will likely be at a higher cost than the first. With that in mind, I'm not sure how you've arrived at a net neutral conclusion.
@danschae This is the draw for me. Devs who can already produce a stable 60 with the current hardware with be able to do so without the graphical hit we're currently seeing. I just got done with Rebirth, and whilst I don't think the image was as bad as people were claiming on performance mode, it clearly suffered as a result. Had the pro been available, I think we would of seen the same flawless 60 but with significantly better graphical fidelity.
In all seriousness though, Sony will be eyeing GTA as a huge pull to sell pro units. Rockstar will have these devkits for roughly a year before the expected launch, and with their long running promotional ties, I imagine Sony will be doing everything they can to ensure there's a pro version ready for it.

Re: Talking Point: How Do You Feel About the PS5 Pro?
@danschae This is the draw for me. Devs who can already produce a stable 60 with the current hardware with be able to do so without the graphical hit we're currently seeing. I just got done with Rebirth, and whilst I don't think the image was as bad as people were claiming on performance mode, it clearly suffered as a result. Had the pro been available, I think we would of seen the same flawless 60 but with significantly better graphical fidelity.

@NeonPizza I have great memories of Powerstone with my brothers growing up. How our mum handled us I'll never know.
Re: Talking Point: How Do You Feel About the PS5 Pro?
I feel like I'll be buying it on release.
Re: Xbox Planning to Release the 'Majority' of Its Exclusives on PS5
If devs are frustrated about developing for multiple systems now, imagine the headache when a rumored handheld gets thrown in to the mix.
Re: Rumour: PS5 Pro Is Up to Three Times Faster Than PS5 as Specs Surface
@Enigk Probably right 😄
In all seriousness though, Sony will be eyeing GTA as a huge pull to sell pro units. Rockstar will have these devkits for roughly a year before the expected launch, and with their long running promotional ties, I imagine Sony will be doing everything they can to ensure there's a pro version ready for it.

I'll be buying this just to play the best version of GTA VI at launch.
