Re: Tomb Raider Developer Crystal Dynamics Hit with Layoffs as Embracer Crumbling Continues

Rob_230

@ATaco Pretty much spot on i'd wager. Embracer seems to have little interest - and certainly a lack of experience - in gaming and the lack of nurturing for once great studios like volition proves that.

Crystal is a victim of bad publisher decision-making throughout their history. Tomb Raider never really recovered from the exclusivity deal with Microsoft for Rise (despite how good i personally think Shadow was, sales didnt reflect that).

Square Enix didnt have developer wellbeing in mind when they sold to Embracer group, and since then Crystal have been batted from pillar to post with this partnership with microsoft on perfect dark, and the whole tomb raider/amazon thing.

I really do hope they fall on their feet. The soul reaver and tomb raider ip deserves better treatment.

Re: Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth Gets January Release Date Alongside Gameplay, Story Trailers

Rob_230

Lol. Obviously buying this as Yakuza is one of my favourite franchises. But is 2024 the year of the Segway? Not seen one in years and here they are popping up in Final Fantasy 7 and Like a Dragon.

It's the new grappling hook, bow and arrow trend it seems and i am absolutely here for it

Have fully caught up on thrle trailers and wow, they keep on upping the stakes with these things. Game looks absolutely fantastic. Day 1 buy

Re: Xbox Documents Reveal Staggering Cost of Bringing Games to Game Pass, PS Plus

Rob_230

For context, Sony paid $229 million for Insomniac so you can see why publishers are falling over themselves to buy developers rather than tying up AAA games for subscription services.

The more interesting story linked to these leaks is what some of the publishers like Sega, Nintendo etc make of what Phil has been saying in private emails @get2sammyb , do you think companies will give it much care, or do you think they brush it off?

And where does Sony stand on all this? How do they react. Its inevitable they have similar conversations behind closed doors (i.e the Yves Cheshire cat comments), but its really unclear what their relationship with 3rd parties really looks like. And whats the deal with SEGA. Something must have happened that we dont know about that has strained that relationship and contributed to the real risk of a partnership with Microsoft. I bet they are fascinated by some of the reveals though. Didn't slick phil say Microsoft were not going to have a mid gen refresh during the trial, yet clearly that is not true based on these documents

Going to be a messy few years ahead.

Re: Xbox Almost Flashed Its Cash At Warner Bros, Sees Nintendo As the Holy Grail

Rob_230

Really not a surprise this - and we already saw Microsoft's dossier of acquisition targets.

I wont be entirely one sided here. Lets not be naive and assume Sony doesn't have similar discussions and motivations. However i reckon a company like WB would have been much more attractive to Sony who tend to look for talent rather than ip in their acquisition strategy.

But people really need to start seeing through Phil Spencer. He is just another salesman who cares naught for anyone but his shareholders. Microsoft is an incredibly arrogant company who is completely out of touch with reality.

Nintendo have absolutely no need to sell out to anyone - and it would have to take a catastrophe of wii u standards 2 or 3 generations over to make them even consider it. I expect the play microsoft is now trying to push for will be launching a curated version of gamepass on Switch 2 to get that foothold into Japan - if Nintendo allow it. They have been cosying up for a while now.

I also dont see why valve would sell to Microsoft. Gabe may love the big M but a partnership- particularly if VR ever takes off, seems like a much more sensible proposition.

This whole thing is so exhausting now. I don't want to have to worry if my favourite 3rd party franchises like Final Fantasy, Persona, Yakuza, Tomb Raider etc are going to get released on my platform of choice. Its tiring

Re: Poll: Was Sony's Latest State of Play Worth the Wait?

Rob_230

@Shepherd_Tallon For me its not even the quantity. Spiderman, FF7 Rebirth, Like a Dragon, and Persona 3 alone are going to last me to next summer i expect 😅 im not sure how i'd be able to fit much more in. And thats not thinking about the likes of Assasins Creed Mirage, Phantom Liberty - plus the backlog! And anything else ive forgotten like Alan Wake

Re: Poll: Was Sony's Latest State of Play Worth the Wait?

Rob_230

Ff7 rebirth looks spectacular. The Golden Saucer 🥰 and RE seperate ways looks great. Resi4 vr looks impressive and ghostbusters looks fun (abit like the star trek bridge captain game). Spiderman continues to look fantastic.

Show zipped by which is a positive but i'd have liked to see more titles.

Baby steps looked like an octodad clone so i failed to see what was particularly innovative.

Overall an ok show, but with some big spectacular highlights (not intentionally a spidey pun). Sony continues to have significant room for improvement but i think that was much better

February continues to look like a very expensive month!

Re: State of Play Livestream Revealed for Thursday, a Focus on Indie and Third-Party Games

Rob_230

Possibly the first time i'll go into a show without any hype. The last showcase genuinely damaged my enthusiasm for the future of Playstation. And a lack of first party content again after the last showing is a terrible decision.

Im sure if we see more FF7 rebirth i will get excited nonetheless. Lets see what they bring. Based on recent reveals, Stellar Blade will surely be getting a release date

Re: Reminder: Last Chance to Stack PS Plus Subscriptions Before Price Rise

Rob_230

I stacked an extra year of essential to take me through to late 2025. Whilst i dont play online often, i have years of PS3, 4, 5, and Vita games through the IGC i want access to, and i value cloud saving. I will say this has been the most thought ive given to dropping my sub completely but ive not quite been driven to it yet.

Tbh, buying a 50 pound psn voucher on ShopTo for 42 pounds did help the decision

Re: Reaction: Has Sony Put Together the Worst PS Plus Month Ever?

Rob_230

No its not the worst month and this is hyperbole. In the dying days of PS3, and when Sony gave no cares about Vita, and the PS4 was still young we saw some horrific months - sometimes for consecutive months at a time. At least in Saints Row there is a potentially passable title.

With that said, its a bad look on a day when they are yet again nickel and diming consumers. Its not a coincidence the line up is poor at the same time they put out a statement claiming that they need to increase costs in order to subsidise quality of games.

This was always going to be an issue with Sony fragmenting the Plus community with 3 different tiers. Im not best pleased about it as i have no intention of upgrading from the essential tier given i always have a huge backlog of titles to play, without adding to that with ps plus extra, yet it feels like i am having to subsidise those higher tiers.

Im not surprised at all to see them try it on though, particularly since stats show subscriber numbers on plus and game pass are falling off a cliff. Its a difficult balance to make, but increasing prices by 20% is obscene and months like this wont have people queuing up to resubscribe

Re: Rumour: God of War Ragnarok DLC Expansion Deep in Development for PS5

Rob_230

Makes complete sense - not necessarily as dlc, but as a standalone shorter adventure like Uncharted Lost Legacy. Clearly they want to do something with Atreus and this is an opportunity to do that without the backlash they would get for releasing the next mainline god of war title without Kratos.

I can well believe this rumour is true

Re: PS5 Fans Note Very Fast Start to 2024 Release Schedule

Rob_230

I just started Lost Judgement which will no doubt take me 60 + hours (given i have kids this will take several months to get through) and have a gigantic backlog so the rush of new games will largely have to wait (spiderman and FF7 are day one's though).

Re: $50 for Red Dead Redemption PS4 Port 'Commercially Accurate', Says Publisher Take-Two

Rob_230

Whilst i hope this flops as its clearly a cynical move by take2, the fact is, it won't. First time on switch will encourage people to buy it. And dropping a physical release close to Christmas will see big sales from well meaning family members etc as gifts. I'm sure there will also be people who justify the purchase as they will argue it is no longer 'locked to PS3'. Fact is, the backwards compatible Xbox version is the best, and most cost-effective way to play this game. Heck, you could probably buy a PS3 and a copy of RDR for less than the cost of entry here.

Am i going to buy it? No, despite absolutely loving this game. This is a greedy move. How much say does Rockstar have in this? I don't know anymore - but what i do know is that i've lost alot of faith in Rockstar games over the past decade and i won't be buying GTA6 untill i have seen clear evidence that the single player experience lives up to the standards i expect from them. If it turns out the experience is a throwaway secondary thought to the new version of GTA Online, i won't be getting it.

Re: Red Dead Redemption Out on PS4 This Month, Not a Remaster

Rob_230

@ShogunRok Yes. Rockstar is clearly no longer the company it was back on PS3 when i felt anything they touched would turn to gold. Now the creative heads have all left, they seem to be geared up only to make money on past glories (RDR2 on PS4 still had the involvement of what was left of the creative team).

This port comes as absolutely no surprise - particularly at that price point.

People do need to manage their expectations for GTA 6 imo. I hope i'm wrong, but i am worried about it!

Re: Poll: Will You Be Muting Your PS5's Beep?

Rob_230

@KilloWertz i get what you're saying, but my argument with this is always that i am sure Sony are working on the big issues people want fixed, but they are more complicated and so take longer to implement. Whereas this is a small thing they can roll out fairly quickly.

Alternatively, perhaps i am giving them way too much credit 😅

Re: Star Wars Jedi: Survivor Is Being Ported Backwards to Decade-Old PS4

Rob_230

'I felt a great disturbance in the Force, as if millions of playstation 4's suddenly cried out in terror and were suddenly silenced. I fear something terrible has happened'.

I'm sure EA can get this running on PS4. But it doesn't mean they should. Get the next gen versions running properly before looking back at last gen. The Xbox VCR will surely implode running this

Re: Hands On: The Expanse: A Telltale Series PS5, PS4 Gets Off to a Strong Start

Rob_230

@Netret0120 Exactly. The episodic format is absolutely fine if they develop it like Life is Strange True Colours and drop all episodes in one go, but i dont think having a gap between episodes works any more. I dont think people will forget the fear that they wouldn't see a finished series with the walking dead part 3. And then there is also the risk that you put the game down and then forget half the key plot points when the next episode drops.

So i'm like you. Im very much interested in playing the expanse (and wolf among us 2 when they get to it) but i'll definitely be waiting for the finished product
