Hello. I apreciate you guys takig your time to read my post. I have recently bought a playstation 5 console. I have tried to google this but i am getting a bunch of differnt information i do not know what to belive. How long can you run your ps5 for before it needs to be shut down. I know if it gets to hot the system will shut down on its own but on average how long can you game on a ps5 before it needs to be shut down to cool.

I am mainly asking because i have had system in the past that have either shut down or just stoped working after only a few hours of gaming

How long are you planning to play for in one session?

@Kagenomure My guess is that the reason you’re seeing so many differing opinions is because there are many variables to account for. I am no expert, so take what I say with a grain of salt, but I’ll give my thoughts —

Assuming the PS5 is in a well ventilated space out in the open, and in a room that’s at a reasonable temperature, and that the unit including the fan and heat sink is clean and free of dust and debris — then you really shouldn’t have a limit to how long you can leave the unit on. I would think it could theoretically run indefinitely, only limited by its own inner components wearing out (which should be after thousands of hours I suspect)

However, the other variable is what game or software you’re running at the time. Definitely some games run the unit hotter than others. I’m always curious to compare and I’ll reach back and touch the back part of the console where the power supply, heat sink, and fan output blows and feel the difference in how hot it gets between different games. Obviously more graphically intensive games and those with more demanding high fps performance computing requirements seem to run it hotter. So I have heard of games out there that will overheat even a perfectly functional and optimized PS5 that’s well ventilated, but that should not be happening if QA on the game occurs properly.

I also think that just because the PS5 can run for dozens of hours constantly doesn’t mean you should do that. Again, I’m no expert, but there’s a lifespan to the liquid metal component that transfers the heat, as I understand it and although it’s more effective than the thermal paste from the PS4, it’s my understanding that like thermal paste the liquid metal can degrade over time. I assume that prolonged time at an high temperature accelerates its degradation, but I’m not sure. And obviously other components degrade when overworked as well.

So, I don’t think you need to set a concrete number limit to how many hours you run your PS5. But I think you should give it (and yourself) breaks throughout long play sessions. Your brain has limits as well… as does your bladder and stomach. 😂

I’d be curious to hear from forum users of what some of the longest uninterrupted play sessions with running their PS5 has been, just for curiosity and comparison’s sake. For me, I believe I’ve probably had up to 8 hours constant use, where I just pause a game for a bathroom break or a quick snack but don’t turn the unit off. But usually I try to limit sessions to about 3-4 hours before I put it in rest mode while I go out and let my eyes see the sunlight for a few minutes. 😄 But I’d be willing to bet there are many users who have had their PS5 running a game for much longer than that. 12 hours? 24 hours? We’ll see who’s willing to admit they gamed for 24 hours straight. I’d be curious to know if anyone noticed drop in PS5 performance after a certain number of hours.

i personally like to game for as long as i can when i can. I would like to go for around 5 hours each session but im so used to 3 hour because of my old system

@Kagenomure You can definitely keep it running for five hours uninterrupted, no problem. Again, provided it’s in a well ventilated space.

@Th3solution it is. I have a stand i made out of 2 crates i have it sitting on and my room i game in is a good size so it has room to breath
