Author Profile

As the Editor of Push Square, Sammy has over 15 years of experience analysing the world of PlayStation, from PS3 through PS5 and everything in between. He’s an expert on PS Studios and industry matters, as well as sports games and simulators. He also enjoys RPGs when he has the time to dedicate to them, and is a bit of a gacha whale.

I've been passionate about video games since I was at primary school, printing off Nintendo-themed newsletters to share with my pals on the playground. I love the escapism that only video games can provide, and I enjoy sharing my passion for the industry with anyone and everyone who will listen!

Experience

Sammy founded Push Square as a personal project while studying Business and Computing at Birmingham City University in 2009. Although he’d made several websites in the past, he wanted to create something more contemporary to demonstrate his abilities to future employers.

He enjoyed working on Push Square so much that he was able to turn it into a full-time job after graduating, and when the site was eventually integrated into Hookshot Media in 2012! As Editor, Sammy is responsible for the day-to-day running of Push Square, and he continues to contribute news, reviews, guides and features to the site.

I love sharing my passion for video games, and specifically PlayStation, with the rest of the world. There's no other entertainment medium that gives me butterflies of excitement quite like gaming does, and it's a dream come true to be able to engage others and share my enthusiasm with like-minded fans.

Timeline

  • 2009: Launches Push Square as a personal project while studying for a Business and Computing degree.
  • 2012: Begins working with Nintendo Life’s Editor as Associate Editor, helping to transition Push Square from a personal project to a fully-fledged professional website.
  • 2013: Becomes full-time Editor of Push Square, responsible for growing the profile of the website and increasing the footprint of its team.

Qualifications & Awards

  • 2011 - BSc 1st Class Hons Business Information Technology with Multimedia (Birmingham City University)

Expertise

Sammy’s gaming journey began with the Super Nintendo and SEGA Mega Drive consoles, both of which his family owned during his younger years. The first console he personally owned was the Game Boy, followed by a long line of systems from the Nintendo 64 right through to the PlayStation 5.

Sammy’s favourite console of all-time is the Dreamcast, thanks largely to its timeless games. The PS1 remains his favourite PlayStation though, due to its expansive library and the path it plotted from the 2D to the 3D eras through iconic games like Resident Evil and Crash Bandicoot.

I have many favourite game genres, but I'd say I enjoy the Action RPG above all others! I like the sense of progression that RPGs provide, and I enjoy action-based gameplay with fun combat systems that feel satisfying to play.

Sammy’s Favourite Games

Shenmue 1 & 2 (PS4):

I played these games first on Dreamcast, of course, but was delighted to revisit them in high definition on the PS4. These two titles proved to me that games can have engaging narratives, and I remain obsessed with its life simulation elements - the fact that you can explore the world, go where you want, and use your time in any way you like.

Resident Evil 4 (PS2):

I’m listing the original PS2 release here, but of course the PS4 remake is excellent as well. This Capcom masterpiece changed the third-person shooter forever with its taut gunplay and great controls. It’s also just a fantastic adventure, with tons of iconic moments and set-pieces.

Shadow of the Colossus (PS2):

Again, I’m listing the PS2 original, but the PS3 re-release and PS4 remakes are also outstanding. While Shenmue proved to me that games can compete with movies when it comes to engaging narratives, this game showed me it’s possible to tell stories in a different way. Team ICO’s classic conveys emotion through interaction, and it’s a unique experience for that.

From the Archive

We asked Sammy to pick out his three favourite pieces of work from across his personal archive, and tell us why he picked them!

Feature: Exploring Taiwan's Underground Gaming Scene:

I'm obsessed with video games and find ways to incorporate them into everything I do. Writing this piece about Taiwan's very unique underground gaming scene was a joy, and I was so overwhelmed by the feedback I received.

Feature: Tokyo Game Show Was Everything I Expected, And Somehow More:

I'd read about Tokyo Game Show in magazines, but actually getting to physically attend was a career highlight. I was really proud of how I was able to sum up the sights and sounds of the event in this article.

GTA Online Guide: Your Ultimate Wiki and Walkthrough Resource:

I spent hundreds of hours learning the ins-and-outs of one of the PS5 and PS4's most popular games in order to produce this GTA Online guide. I think it provides a great starting point for anyone looking to get into the multiplayer sandbox mode.

  • E3 2017 LocoRoco 2 Remastered Rolls to PS4

    Tilt time

This is one of those E3 2017 stories that slipped through the cracks. • News Sony's Ready to Sell You a PS4 Pro at Long Last

Platform holder drops neat new ad

Have you noticed how Sony’s actually started talking about the PlayStation 4 Pro like it’s not embarrassed about it anymore? Last year’s reveal event was weird, where the platform holder almost played down the very real advantages of the platform – and it hasn’t really said a whole lot about it in the...

  • News Well, May As Well Get the E3 2018 Tag Started, Right?

    Next year's show dated

The industry’s barely had time to put a full-stop on E3 2017, but already it’s time to turn our attention to E3 2018. Good god! • E3 2017 Sony Considering Gamescom 2017 Press Conference

    Platform holder pondering European show

Sony’s always been a big presence on the Gamescom showfloor, but it opted not to hold a German press conference in 2015 due to scheduling issues and again in 2016 as it placed increased focus on E3 and PlayStation Experience. But now PlayStation Europe chief Jim Ryan has hinted that it may hold a European...

  • E3 2017 Spider-Man Will Have Alternate Outfits on PS4

    Thwip

This is probably the most obvious announcement of E3 2017, but Spider-Man will be able to unlock different outfits in the new PlayStation 4 game. Insomniac Games hasn’t detailed exactly how you’ll get these – it’s probably safe to suggest that at least one will be available as a pre-order bonus – or what design they’ll adopt. We...

  • E3 2017 Tiny Trax Looks Like a Ton of Fun in PlayStation VR

    Round the bend

Sometimes the simplest ideas for PlayStation VR are the best ones, and Tiny Trax really looks like a smart implementation of the technology. The game essentially builds a slot car track around you, so you need to follow your car by physically looking around the track, but as developer FuturLab points out, it’s not going to cause...

  • E3 2017 Final Fantasy XV's New DLC Is Like a Different Game

    Yes, it's a third-person shooter

What the—? Well, we suppose nothing about Final Fantasy XV should surprise us anymore, but even after earlier reports suggested as much, this first trailer for Episode Prompto has caught us by surprise. It looks like the kind of corridor third-person shooter that you’d find on the PlayStation 2 – but in the...

  • E3 2017 Sony's Listening to Your Requests for PS4 Remakes

    Build the list

Sony may not be a huge fan of backwards compatibility – or is that just Jim Ryan, mayhaps? – but it seems to be going all in on PlayStation 4 remakes and remasters. The past few months alone have plotted the release of PaRappa the Rapper and LocoRoco, and both Patapon and Shadow of the Colossus are still to come. And speaking on

  • Reaction Curtain Closes on Ill-Tempered E3 2017

    Forgettable show has been feisty

Well, this one won’t live long in the memory, will it? E3 2017 has been fine, but it’s been far from vintage, and we’re struggling to think of any one announcement or theme that we’ll remember in the days to come – yet alone years. In fact, if there’s any one defining feature that’s really stood out,...

  • E3 2017 Days Gone Is a Deadly, Dynamic Open World Game

    Play your way

One thing you may not know about Days Gone is that it’s massively dynamic. This week’s E3 2017 demo may have looked scripted, but the game actually alters and adapts depending on the conditions in the open world. Sony Bend is showing off an “alternate” playthrough behind closed doors to demonstrate this, but it popped up on the...

    A new reality

Call of Cthulhu, the action role-playing game inspired by H.P. Lovecraft’s supernatural stories, has received a new trailer at E3 2017 – though it’s not the gameplay trailer you may have been hoping for. Instead the cinematic piece introduces us to Private Investigator Edward Pierce, whose perception of reality is being...

  • E3 2017 Take Off with 10 Minutes of Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown

    Fly away

Is this our first, unedited look at Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown? We reckon it is. Hot off the E3 2017 show floor, this gameplay shows off some impressive presentational improvements, including the canopy freezing at high altitude and the volumetric clouds. More importantly, though, the gameplay looks rock solid and the soundtrack is killer.

  • E3 2017 What the Hell Is Going on with Sucker Punch?

Yoshida updates us on inFAMOUS dev

We would have bet our life savings on Sucker Punch announcing its new game at E3 2017 – and we would have lost the lot. Despite being out of action for almost three years, the Seattle-based studio still has nothing to say about its new game, widely believed to be a brand new intellectual property for the...

Here’s a question worth pondering: is Sony’s own PlayStation Experience now more important to the platform holder than E3? • E3 2017 The Persistence Brings Brilliant Procedurally Generated Horror to PlayStation VR

    Dead space

Sci-fi horror hasn’t really had a champion on consoles since Dead Space, but The Persistence looks like a worthy addition to the genre. A procedurally generated title for PlayStation VR, the title sees you whisked away to a far-flung corner of the galaxy, where a black hole investigation has gone horribly awry. You’ll play as a...

  • E3 2017 Want Crash Team Racing? Buy N. Sane Trilogy

    Va va voom

This is our favourite sales pitch: if you want Game X then you must buy Game Y. It’s a teensy bit shady, but the fact is that it holds water: publishers are much more likely to fund games if there’s tangible proof that a market exists, so when Vicarious Visions suggests that Crash Team Racing could come to the PlayStation 4 if the
