Author Profile

As the Editor of Push Square, Sammy has over 15 years of experience analysing the world of PlayStation, from PS3 through PS5 and everything in between. He’s an expert on PS Studios and industry matters, as well as sports games and simulators. He also enjoys RPGs when he has the time to dedicate to them, and is a bit of a gacha whale.

I've been passionate about video games since I was at primary school, printing off Nintendo-themed newsletters to share with my pals on the playground. I love the escapism that only video games can provide, and I enjoy sharing my passion for the industry with anyone and everyone who will listen!

Experience

Sammy founded Push Square as a personal project while studying Business and Computing at Birmingham City University in 2009. Although he’d made several websites in the past, he wanted to create something more contemporary to demonstrate his abilities to future employers.

He enjoyed working on Push Square so much that he was able to turn it into a full-time job after graduating, and when the site was eventually integrated into Hookshot Media in 2012! As Editor, Sammy is responsible for the day-to-day running of Push Square, and he continues to contribute news, reviews, guides and features to the site.

I love sharing my passion for video games, and specifically PlayStation, with the rest of the world. There's no other entertainment medium that gives me butterflies of excitement quite like gaming does, and it's a dream come true to be able to engage others and share my enthusiasm with like-minded fans.

Timeline

  • 2009: Launches Push Square as a personal project while studying for a Business and Computing degree.
  • 2012: Begins working with Nintendo Life’s Editor as Associate Editor, helping to transition Push Square from a personal project to a fully-fledged professional website.
  • 2013: Becomes full-time Editor of Push Square, responsible for growing the profile of the website and increasing the footprint of its team.

Qualifications & Awards

  • 2011 - BSc 1st Class Hons Business Information Technology with Multimedia (Birmingham City University)

Expertise

Sammy’s gaming journey began with the Super Nintendo and SEGA Mega Drive consoles, both of which his family owned during his younger years. The first console he personally owned was the Game Boy, followed by a long line of systems from the Nintendo 64 right through to the PlayStation 5.

Sammy’s favourite console of all-time is the Dreamcast, thanks largely to its timeless games. The PS1 remains his favourite PlayStation though, due to its expansive library and the path it plotted from the 2D to the 3D eras through iconic games like Resident Evil and Crash Bandicoot.

I have many favourite game genres, but I'd say I enjoy the Action RPG above all others! I like the sense of progression that RPGs provide, and I enjoy action-based gameplay with fun combat systems that feel satisfying to play.

Sammy’s Favourite Games

Shenmue 1 & 2 (PS4):

I played these games first on Dreamcast, of course, but was delighted to revisit them in high definition on the PS4. These two titles proved to me that games can have engaging narratives, and I remain obsessed with its life simulation elements - the fact that you can explore the world, go where you want, and use your time in any way you like.

Resident Evil 4 (PS2):

I’m listing the original PS2 release here, but of course the PS4 remake is excellent as well. This Capcom masterpiece changed the third-person shooter forever with its taut gunplay and great controls. It’s also just a fantastic adventure, with tons of iconic moments and set-pieces.

Shadow of the Colossus (PS2):

Again, I’m listing the PS2 original, but the PS3 re-release and PS4 remakes are also outstanding. While Shenmue proved to me that games can compete with movies when it comes to engaging narratives, this game showed me it’s possible to tell stories in a different way. Team ICO’s classic conveys emotion through interaction, and it’s a unique experience for that.

From the Archive

We asked Sammy to pick out his three favourite pieces of work from across his personal archive, and tell us why he picked them!

Feature: Exploring Taiwan's Underground Gaming Scene:

I'm obsessed with video games and find ways to incorporate them into everything I do. Writing this piece about Taiwan's very unique underground gaming scene was a joy, and I was so overwhelmed by the feedback I received.

Feature: Tokyo Game Show Was Everything I Expected, And Somehow More:

I'd read about Tokyo Game Show in magazines, but actually getting to physically attend was a career highlight. I was really proud of how I was able to sum up the sights and sounds of the event in this article.

GTA Online Guide: Your Ultimate Wiki and Walkthrough Resource:

I spent hundreds of hours learning the ins-and-outs of one of the PS5 and PS4's most popular games in order to produce this GTA Online guide. I think it provides a great starting point for anyone looking to get into the multiplayer sandbox mode.

    Bat crazy?

Yooka-Laylee is a collectathon at heart, so you're probably going to want to get all of its Trophies on the PlayStation 4. And fortunately it's looking like a relatively straight-forward Platinum to nab – you're just going to have to keep your eye out for all of those pesky pagies and quills. While it does seem like there's an awful lot...

  • News Sonic Mania Says Goodbye Spring, Hello Summer

    Bad Eggman

The Year of Dreams™ has taken a temporary blow, as Sonic Mania has been pushed out of its Spring release window and into the Summer instead. It's only a matter of months, of course – and should result in an overall better product. The delay was confirmed at SXSW earlier today, where SEGA also showed off the first footage of Flying...

  • News February 2017 NPD: For Honor Ascends as Nioh Stabs Top Ten

    But industry declines persist

You've got to give credit to Ubisoft: it may not make games that get NeoGAF giddy, but it sure knows the market well. For Honor has climbed straight to the top of NPD charts in the United States for the month of February, with Ghost Recon: Wildlands surely the frontrunner to pull the same party trick in March's report...

Full-blown Sonic set to release 2017 on PS4

Sonic Forces! That's the name of the game previously referred to as Project Sonic 2017 which was announced during that sh*tshow of a livestream last year. And the first gameplay footage shown at SXSW earlier this evening is looking… Pretty rad. It's a speedy, set-piece laden sequence – but the visuals...

    Telltale will remember that

Telltale gaffer Kevin Bruner has reportedly stepped down from his position of CEO this week, according to sources close to Kotaku scribe Jason Schreier. • News Is Emma Stone Going to Star in Death Stranding?

    "That's a lovely rumour"

At this point, we can probably safely say that Hideo Kojima has been given a blank cheque by Sony to make Death Stranding. The auteur not only has one of the most stylish indie game offices in the universe, but he's also busy snapping up hot Hollywood talent like Norman Reedus and Mads Mikkelsen to star in the game. And one...

  • News Guerrilla Already Hard at Work on Expansion to Horizon's Story

    No rest for the wicked

Horizon: Zero Dawn has sold incredibly well, becoming Sony's biggest new IP launch of the PlayStation 4 generation and Guerrilla Games' largest ever debut. But buried inside the celebratory press release is this little tidbit from managing director Hermen Hulst: "We're thrilled that Horizon: Zero Dawn has been embraced by...

  • News Horizon: Zero Dawn Has Been a Huge Commercial Hit for Sony

You're looking at the birth of a massive new PlayStation franchise here: Horizon: Zero Dawn has sold 2.6 million units in the two weeks since its release. Those numbers represent copies of the game in consumers' hands, rather than shipped to stores. It makes the game Sony's...

  • News Shenmue III Clears Some QTEs in Cruddy Dev Diary

    Changed my mind

Shenmue III's supposed to release this year, but we'll save you the disappointment of a delay right here and now: it's not. Ys Net has uploaded its first developer diary in months today, and it's basically two minutes of next to nothing, as the team laugh and joke their way around the company's distinctively pokey office. There is a...

  • News Mass Effect: Andromeda Has Some Pretty Funny Scenes

But we don't think they're intentional

We jumped on Horizon: Zero Dawn for that cut-scene pretty quickly, so in the interests of keeping things fair, this Mass Effect: Andromeda clip that's doing the rounds probably deserves a post. If nothing else it had your humble host in stitches of laughter, so maybe it'll brighten up your day:

  • Review Dying: Reborn (PS4)

    Tonight, Mathew

Dying: Reborn's one of those games that, as a reviewer, makes you feel a bit rubbish. It's not a good game – in fact, it's pretty bloody bad – but you can tell that a tiny studio has tried its very best to make something cool. Also available on PlayStation VR and the Vita (either individually or as part of a three game bundle),...

Starting from 17th March, you'll be able to kit...

  • News Everything Is Down Vote Bait for PlayStation's YouTube Channel

A game with one million years of gameplay

To be honest, we wrote that headline prior to looking at Everything's fulfilment bar on YouTube, and we're both surprised (and a little delighted) to see that it's been received fairly positively by PlayStation's five million plus subscribers. The game – which is part of Sony's awesome Spring-based Play...

  • News The Disney Afternoon Collection Brings Childhood Classics to PS4

DuckTales! Chip 'n Dale Rescue Rangers! TaleSpin!

Phwoar, this was unexpected: Capcom has announced The Disney Afternoon Collection which, despite its frankly atrocious name, actually sounds super cool. Essentially it's a PlayStation 4 compilation of six classic games updated with 1080p visuals, and it's launching on 18th April for £15.99 in Europe...

  • Review Clicker Heroes (PS4)

    Tap happy?

The humble clicker will eventually kill productivity here at Push Square Towers. Following in the free-to-play footsteps of AdVenture Capitalist is the kinda crumby Clicker Heroes, a tap-'em-up in which the primary reward loop involves ever-increasing numbers. Its gameplay loop is about as entertaining as punching numbers into a...

Rain World! PaRappa! Full Throttle! Edith Finch! More!

    Surprise attack

Ubisoft has once again proven that it's the master of sleeper hits, as its Ghost Recon: Wildlands has secured the largest launch of the year so far. • News PS4 Firmware Update 4.50 Massively Improves PlayStation Move

    Shake it off

Perhaps the biggest criticism that's been levelled at PlayStation VR since launch is that the PlayStation Move controllers just aren't up to snuff.
