Our Game of the Year coverage continues with the Best PS5, PS4 Developer of 2022, of which a top four has been put together by the Push Square editorial team. This category crowns the best PS5, PS4 developers that have excelled this year, whether that's through multiple releases or fantastic support of their current line-up. At the end, we will list a few honourable mentions.
Bronze Trophy: Player First Games (MultiVersus)
Many new live-service titles seem to crash and burn nowadays, so much so that a successful one outside of the household names feels like an anomaly. MultiVersus from Player First Games was one of the few games to make a breakthrough, and the studio has continued to support the experience throughout the year. Many balance patches, events, and new characters have been implemented into the game, making what is a great fighting game even better.
Silver Trophy: CD Projekt RED (Cyberpunk 2077, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt)
Throughout 2022, Polish heavyweight CD Projekt RED has been working to bring its two biggest games up to the standards we expect on PS5. Cyberpunk 2077 is finally in a state worth playing after so many patches, and then the PS5 version came along to make it look and run so much better for current-gen users. It then did the same for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, giving it a nice facelift on PS5 and bundling in a bit of free content themed around the Netflix show. The abysmal launch of Cyberpunk 2077 will never be forgotten, but CD Projekt RED is working tirelessly to right its wrongs.
Gold Trophy: Roll7 (OlliOlli World, Rollerdrome)
Releasing one game is difficult enough, so how about two in the space of six months, one of which was also supported post-launch with two pieces of DLC? British team Roll7 had an incredible 2022, releasing two of the PS5's best-feeling titles within touching distance of each other. OlliOlli World revitalised the 2D skateboarding series, and then Rollerdrome paired Tony Hawk's Pro Skater with guns for fantastic effect. A really impressive effort from the indie studio.
Platinum Trophy: FromSoftware (Elden Ring)
Elden Ring belongs in the same pantheon as titles like The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild as it successfully breaks away from the typical mould of open world experiences to set a new standard for exploration. All thanks to FromSoftware, the Japanese team created wonder and intrigue around every corner and inside every cave through its outstanding commitment to unique visual designs, both in the environment and the enemies that inhabit those locations. The Lands Between is varied, beautiful. It could only have been crafted by a masterful team like FromSoftware, cementing it as one of the industry's greats all over again.
Honourable mentions: Epic Games, Guerrilla Games, and Square Enix.

This was Square’s year and next year likely will be too.
Asobo took it for me in 2022. Honestly... it's criminal how Asobo and A Plague Tale Requiem have been ignored for GOTY awards.
At least CD Project Red got a nod for Witcher 3 in something.
I'd probably say Hello Games should get a quick mention. The free content for No Man's Sky keeps on coming.
No Santa Monica studios?
Santa Monica studios. From software winning is a crime. I know their games are good but technically they are train wrecks. Played demon’s souls loved it. Than tried BB again but it’s so choppy…
Edit: Demon’s Souls was remastered by bluepoint
Are you guys for real?
Santa Monica created one of the best sequals in gaming history: "Sorry bro"
CDPR makes two ports: "Amazing"
Kudos for including Roll7. Amazing that they launched two great games in just one year.
@somnambulance square is in fire right now
Roll7 released two gems this year so glad they’re getting recognition.
Yeah I gotta give this one to Sony Santa Monica. The cards were seemingly stacked against them as many wondered if they could even follow up on a game like GoW 2018. And despite the odds they somehow actually managed to pull it off with a game that I believe to be even better than GoW 2018, as debatable as that may be. Elden Ring on the other hand launched with some pretty significant technical issues I recall. It didn't even run at 60fps on either of the next gen consoles and had some pretty horrible pop in
Santa Monica Studios not even amongst honorable mentions. After making a GOTY for so many people. Basically managed to squeeze two games into one and still delivered best story of this year. I truly believe you are picking up winners by throwing darts at spreadsheets now.
No Santa Monica or Square Enix? But cd projekt red re releasing cyberpunk in a state it should of been on release gets in 🤔🙃
Removed - inappropriate language
CDPR?! Really guys?!
A couple of updates to old games should not get you on the podium.
(Plus they're a bunch of lying scumbags)
CDPR shouldn’t be on here for a port, and cleaning up their mess.
It’s good they did those things but to put them on the list for best developer and not Santa Monica is laughable 😂😂😂😂
(They didn’t even release a new title this year just two current gen upgrades)
Lol how's Santa Monica not on here...
I know CDPR being on the list will make some heads shake but I'm happy to see them here. Cyberpunk had a redemption arc I don't think anyone saw coming with the PS5 version and Edgerunners turning out as great as they did. They also announced a whole slate of Witcher/Cyberpunk sequels along with new studios and deals with third party studios. Witcher 3's next gen port turning out as good as it was was just the cherry on top.
It's true they had simply a terrible time from Cyberpunk's launch to its PS5 port but they had big year this year both in current game development and outside of it so I got no problem with their inclusion personally.
CDPR taking 2 years to fix a game.
tw3 has issues o all platforms.
pushsquare really needing clicks over xmas huh.
Jokes aside with CD Project Red being on the podium but no Square Enix???
They’ve absolutely killed it this year & next year will be even better.
When I see dev teams of the year, I expect it to be for titles made and released in 2022. Not for someone publishing a remaster and patches!
FromSoftware winning and randomly CDPR in the list but no mention of Santa Monica...
Elden Ring is def getting push square's game of the year.
Including CD Projekt Red on this feels a little off since the games they list next to them weren’t REALLY developed this year. They’re older works that have been improved upon or polished up. And where the heck is Sony Santa Monica?!?! Something is DEFINITELY off about this list…..
Rose-Engine takes the award in my book for Signalis. A team of two releasing a survival horror that can keep up, and partially surpass, the best the genre has to offer.
And while you all discuss the obvious bigwigs that have received enough accolades, it's a shame this gem and the talent behind it is being generally overlooked.
I know most people are saying Santa Monica because the game they released is phenomenal, but I think they deserve it due to their openness with GoW—at least when the marketing push started. At first you still had the devs talking about it and the experience making it on twitter. However, since the second trailer they’ve been consistent with developer uploads detailing every aspect of the game, going into both the creative process and the actual features. They even made another thank you video for ragnarok’s reception, which I haven’t seen any other dev do. Santa Monica definitely was one of the most open developers when they were allowed.
CDPR screwed over everyone 2 years ago, including reviewers. They also did that deliberately and cynically.
And now all is well and you give them a damn trophy ahead of Santa Monica and numerous other devs because it was a long time ago and because they've convinced you it wasn't really like how it was?
Shameful.
Guerrilla only gets an honourable mention even though DF was singing praises for them & Santa Monica isn't mentioned at all?
Booooo!
I do have to admit, I’m becoming a From Software zealot. I’m still a smidge annoyed at the cult-like following they have, but after playing Demon’s Souls Remake and Dark Souls Remastered this year, I’d be lying if I didn’t say I’m quite impressed with the genius of their game development and systems. And I haven’t even played Elden Ring yet.
Other, namely Polyphony Digital! GT7 baby
@Sanquine "crime" "train wrecks". Jeez, talk about exaggeration.
@dschons It’s your game of the year so I would expect you finding my opinion an exaggeration.
1. Elden Ring
2. Horizon Forbidden West
3. Steelrising
4. God of War Ragnarök
5. Syberia The World Before
(not counting TLoU) would be my list.
@Sanquine Except this isn't about that at all.
