In what feels like a bit of an off-year for the FPS genre, the field of nominees for this year's instalment of the best PS5, PS4 FPS game of 2021 doesn't feel quite as strong. Nevertheless, we've still whittled down the best of the best to a top four. Selected by the Push Square editorial team, these are our picks for the best first-person shooters of the year.
Bronze Trophy: Far Cry 6
Far Cry 6 is just like all the other Far Cry games before it: solid but incredibly safe. As such, you likely already knew what you were getting yourself in for upon signing up for a trip to Yara. However, that Ubisoft formula also happens to include robust and satisfying shooting. Allowing you to source and customise your own arsenal, Far Cry 6 goes the extra mile by letting you approach combat challenges however you like. All guns blazing, stealthy, or somewhere in between. You decide, and it can be a right laugh.

Silver Trophy: Call of Duty: Vanguard
Many curse Sledgehammer Games taking the safe route once more with a return to World War II, but at the end of the day, this is yet another rock-solid entry that'll surely satisfy fans for the year to come. The team delivered a good campaign that we hope is built upon in future instalments, and the multiplayer is packed to the rafters with content. Loads of maps, a ton of modes, and consistent support ensure there's always something new to see and do. You already know if you're into Call of Duty or not, but it's undeniably good this year.

Gold Trophy: Back 4 Blood
Everyone loved a bit of Left 4 Dead back in the day, so it's no surprise to see the original creators try to resurrect the concept years later in Back 4 Blood. The setup is incredibly similar: four players try to battle their way between safe houses in order to complete campaigns. However, there just so happens to be hordes of zombies and special infected standing in between them. Crank the difficulty up a little and this becomes one of the most intense experiences of the year. If you've got a group of friends itching to take on the undead, you can't do much better than Back 4 Blood right now.

Platinum Trophy: Deathloop
Deathloop is far and away the most creative game on this list — perhaps of the entire year full stop, actually. Developed by Arkane Studios, it's an immersive sim that anyone and everyone can enjoy, and first-person shooting just so happens to be the most efficient way of taking down your targets. With powers and abilities to go alongside it, your arsenal of unique guns has incredible perks equipped that can completely change how they're used. With many different areas of the island to explore as well as various times of the day you can visit them at, Deathloop is a great FPS that only gets better as add to your build with powers and knowledge.

Far cry 6 on Ps5 is dope. Playing it atm. 8/10 for me 👌
I mean mine is Halo Infinite but yeah…aside from that weak year for the genre.
Resident Evil Village can classify as an FPS in my book.
Far Cry 6 is a pretty great game, so it’s great to see it listed here with best of the year, oddly not seeing the game hit a lot of year end lists. Looks and plays amazing on PS5, tight and fluid combat, Dani and other characters are likable and well-written, tons to do and discover. Weirdly I somehow missed the Far Cry games, New Dawn was the first one I played. FC6 I’m only 15 hours in, but having a blast.
I beat Deathloop last night and the ending actually felt right to me. I know some had issues with it. Great game though. Back 4 Blood was kinda terrible imo, the difficulty was unbalanced to the point of just not being fun at all and the card system didn’t really feel all that interesting either. I’d rather just play Left 4 Dead 2 again!
Far cry 6 is amazing. I vote for that.word up son
@kingbreww its fair dopey alright can we include remasters of the year? Opinion stranding, maybe but I know what my fave was
Haven't played dishonoured 3 yet as waiting for it to hit gamepass before trying it, and back 4 Blood had been awful so far and I can't even find a team to join me on gamepass. So far cry 5 got my vote
I would have put Splitgate above most of these entries, but Deathloop was really solid… However, doesn’t Village technically qualify as an FPS?
Only other fps I can think off was necromunda (which released in a poor state) and Hell Let Loose.
Il have to vote Deathloop. It was one of the more enjoyable games this year despite the overmarketing. Colt and Julianna were great characters and kept me engaged in the story.
Far Cry 6 gets runner up. Mainly because its still a solid shooter tho Giancarlo was wasted in this. Gave a great performance but had no material to work with.
Only other FPS ive played this year was Terminator Resistance Enhanced. Not something I can recommend but wasnt awful either. However i remember a few years ago movie tie in games were getting good with Alien Isolation and Shadow of War. Seems like they are regressing.
Far cry 6 felt like a just cause clone. Recently bought deathloop is a load of fun but trying to clear some backlog so not played a lot of it or fc6
Anybody else not like Deathloop?
I actually really enjoyed Far Cry quite a bit this year and I even ended up really liking the dlc even though it turns Far Cry into a Rogue-like. I tried Hades and really didn't care for that one but surprisingly it worked with Far Cry 6 really well. Maybe it was because of it starring Vaas who's whole thing is about the definition of insanity so doing the same thing over and over again didn't bother me as much? I don't know but anyway looking forward to the Pagan Minn dlc next year!
@stefan771 Deathloop got platinum?! How? It's rubbish. Kite the dumb AI through a door or gap and kill with impunity. Glad i didn't buy it and only borrowed it. Skillup nailed this game with his review. It's awful compared to Arkane games like Prey and Dishonoured 2.
Was in trolling mood today so I voted for Battlefield 2042 🙂
@Integrity The AI got improved via a patch. It’s actually rather difficult to stealth your way through the levels.
Just started deathloop - guess I missed the early release and dumb AI as I'm dying quite a bit. Liking it so far, very stylish, looks nice, good haptics, but after reading up I'm not alone in the disc sounding awful when it's spinning in the ps5
@stefan771 Deathpoop you mean lmao. Yeh, hated it. Games on a time loop are a serious yawn
@nessisonett when was that patch available mate? It was pants when I played it and it must've been pants when it was launched and reviewed yet somehow it got plaudits. I can't think how, they were so braindead it made things far too easy. If they patched the AI then clearly they knew it was a problem. How this got 9s and 10s I can't fathom.
@Integrity Dunno. Got the game last month. I’m sure it was all some massive conspiracy that it got plaudits though, and not the fact that people played it and enjoyed it.
@nessisonett what's with the snark? Considering I played it when the AI was bad, and that was a common opinion before it was patched I'm sure, and you only played it after it was patched, it's the reason I can't understand how it got such high scores. You see it differently having played a better version which is fine. No need to be condescending.
@Integrity exactly. 9 or 10/10 means near perfect and perfect. No way is Deathloop anywhere close to near perfect, even if you did love it. If you review objectively that is. Fun doesn’t equal greatness without the sum of all its parts sharing excellence
Out of the list. Deathloop is the only one that I hav’nt played. The art style, gameplay loop doesn’t do anything for me, so that’s a game I won’t be playing. Far cry 6, I felt was a let down. The characters were boring & I wasn’t a fan of the story. Gameplay was fun tho & traversing the game was nice aswell. Back 4 blood did nothing either for me- so I ended up playing more left 4 dead instead. Vanguard campaign was ok, nothing special-looked amazing tho. Fps have been poor for me this year. My biggest letdown was halo infinite-imo terrible game.
@Integrity Maybe it got the review scores it did to wind Xbox owners up as they can't play it for a year. Not played it but I started Prey this year but couldn't get into it. Maybe I'll give it another go one day.
@kingbreww yeah, it was far from perfect. I liked the Julianna invasions which added some much needed jeopardy but there was so much health to pick up I hardly ever felt like I was in any real difficulty. Maybe the patches have improved matters, I don't know, its not something I ever want to return to.
@Integrity i played it before the patches and I cant say that the AI bothered me too much. Then again I play stealthily as I'm not huge on FPS so it felt good to sneak around like a pro. Also turned off map markers so I needed to read and pay attention to clues and the level design instead of following a quest marker. Really of the humble opinion that Arkane should have made that the default setting and left markers as an accessibility option
I heard Deathloop had crappy enemy AI, did it get better since September?
@sonicmeerkat - I haven't played it myself but SkillUp's review only hit last week and the AI in his footage is hilariously bad. If it's improved since launch I dread to think what it was like originally.

Far Cry 6. Easily one of this years best games. Absolutely love it and enjoying the DLC.
I’ve platinumed Deathloop, Ratchet & Klank, Returnal, RE…Deathloop was fun but does NOT compare to Returnal.
I liked Deathloop. A lot of people seem to hate on it, for the AI. It was bad at launch, but really that is the least of that game's issues.
First, and foremost, Deathloop was sold as a kind of murder puzzle shooter game where you use your wits to kill all your targets in a single day. It is not that. It is not a puzzle at all. You just collect s**t until you get linear missions to complete the game the ONE way it is meant to be completed. The story, humor, characters, and gameplay loop really saved this game for me, because I was under the assertion that this game was MUCH less linear than it was meant to be. It being a murder puzzle game was a straight up lie.
I will say the party is a lot less linear than everything else, but THAT'S really it when it comes to killing your targets. That's just pathetic.
QUAKE 👺
(No, FFS, I don't have anything else to say)
Apparently I just don’t get Deathloop. I thought it was mediocre to the core and I actually had to force myself to finish it.
The shooting is average at best, the stealth is broken and the story was meh. Colt and Julianna banter was the high point.
I really enjoyed Deathloop and Far Cry 6 was the usual mindless fun which was good for what it was but I preferred 5!
