First announced in 2022, the next-gen version of Fallout 4 is finally here — and it's no coincidence that its release roughly aligns with the arrival of Amazon's Fallout series. The post-apocalyptic property is once again a big deal — almost a decade after Fallout 4's original release — and so we want to know if you're returning to the wasteland this weekend.
The native PS5 version promises a 60 frames-per-second performance mode, 4k resolutions, and more. Oh, and it's a free upgrade if you already own Fallout 4 on PS4, which is always a nice touch.
So, whether you plan on replaying Fallout 4 years later, or whether you're entirely new to the franchise, vote in our polls, and then watch out for super mutants in the comments section below.

If they added more content than I would have checked it out
No tried 3 back in the day and just couldn't really get into it so saw no reason to try 4
That's the plan. After Rebirth, Dragons Dogma and Phantom Liberty. So many games, so little time.
Never understood why I love the elder scrolls games but not the fallout ones.
Just downloading it now. Been itching to play it again thanks to the show.
I actually tried playing it a few months ago (never played the DLC), but honestly I think this type of game design has passed me by. Felt the same with Starfield as well.
I've watched the first couple of episodes of the show but it's Fallout 3 I'm craving. I've downgraded my sub to Extra though so I may have to dig the PS3 out
If I’ve got the PS5 version and addons are showing learn more instead of purchase does it mean I did buy the bundle when I thought I did and it’s bugged or not?
Bought Fallout 4 back then at release because I enjoyed The Witcher 3 so much and wanted to play other western RPGs (I only play japanese games for the most part). It was such a huge step back compared to TW3, stopped playing at after about 6h
I've come to the realisation when it comes to Bethesda games. I enjoy them for about 40 hours, then I get sick of it so I do the main quests and factions to get to the end. Every time I try to revisit any Bethesda game for another replay years later I get bored after a couple of hours. Something about their games where revisiting them just doesn't do anything for me.
I own it and can't get upgrade
Nope - it may sound silly, but with the current climate here in Europe it just feels wrong to play this one.. Especially since it MIGHT actually happen in real life if things go extremely sour.
I'm happy just playing Ratchet and Clank for now.
Since I’m mostly playing P3 Reload and VII Remake Rebirth at the moment, have a few other games I want to continue on with, still have a few to start, want to finish DD Dark Arisen then start DD2.
I don’t think I’ll playing it till at some point during summer time
Starting it in a few hours. Looking forward to it. I haven't played it since it first came out in 2015.
38% of readers are playing the Fallout 4 upgrade? Why do I get the idea that these polls are fake?
Hahaha, I can't play yet what I haven't downloaded, so no I'm waiting for it to install 😕 gonna be a while hey ho 😅
I'm not playing it anytime soon since I just started Fallout 76 (much better than I played it last) and Stellar Blade arrives tomorrow.
@KillerBoy they have, although it's bare bones and a new quest at least
@Moonmonkey probarbly the same as me. Its the drab aesthetic of the game mixed with the geys/browns colour pallet. I would play through skyrim/oblivion again no problem as the bright vistas are catching to my eye. Fallout just looks boring to the eye. In my opinion, of course.
I bought it at launch and never played it....fool! This will be a good driving point to finally give it a shot. If I ever finish FF7:RB.
Nope! I forgot I sold my copy when it came to PS+, now that versions not eligible for the upgrade. Off to cex in the morning!
I just want a Fallout game with good RPG mechanics like New Vegas but it seems like Bethesda sucks at it
I thought the show was just okay but it did ignite an interest in me to play the games again. I'm playing a ton of 76 and planning on doing doing yet another playthrough of 4 or new vegas soon.
I only just started playing 4 for this first time last week. But already, this PS5 update is so much better.
Absolutely, thanks to GamePass
Remember getting super bored of Fallout 3 on fatty PS3 back in the day, never again. Give me a tense Last of Us 1 or 2 or Days Gone kinda experience over Fallout any day
I will play it.but not now.my backlog of games is huge.too many video games to play.word up son
Would have played it if the ps+ version got the update. Fingers crossed they make it available
I dunno, I’m sorta hooked on Dave the Diver, but do wish there was a new Fallout to accompany the TV show. I always felt Fallout 4 was a bit of a letdown compared to 3 and New Vegas, but I mean the release schedule is super light this year, so I might go back
I downloaded it, transferred my save and played for about an hour before a bunch of super mutants blew me up and I lost half of that progress so I rage quit. It was really nice in 60fps and I will play more over the weekend.
I'm a bit confused. I own it on PS4 but if I go to the PS5 version page it wants to charge me about £15. Do you need to own all DLC to upgrade?
Will play later on PC for the first time, after Fallout London mod is released.
@gipsojo 38% of people who responded, not 38% of readers.
There's going to be some bias too, since people who are playing or plan to, or have some feeling about it, are likely the ones who would visit the page/poll in the first place.
I already own the game but it's asking me to pay $20 for the upgrade, sigh. PS Store license confusion issues I guess. Would have bought it for $5 during the sale that ended yesterday if I knew I would have needed to in order to get the upgrade. I don't recall seeing anywhere that there were different rules for who can get the upgrade free or not, just that it was a "free upgrade".
EDIT: Just read that supposedly Bethesda said on their Discord that this was a mistake and PS Plus players should get it too, so, fingers crossed!
Looking forward to playing as sarcastic Nora again.
Im not playing next gen because I havent finished the original and I dont want two trophy lists. Lol.
Downloaded and found transferring my previous save over a breeze. Ready to go. Looks nice but switched over to performance mode and it's that much smoother.
Will play more over the weekend.
The worst fallout since it went first person. Would have been way more excited for 3 or new Vegas to get this treatment
Absolutely loved Fallout and Fallout 2.
Really enjoyed Fallout 3 and New Vegas.
Fallout Tactics was okay-ish.
For whatever reason, I just didn’t care for Fallout 4. It just did not feel like a Fallout game to me.
@gonzilla Their Discord says you get it if you're an Extra subscriber. Looks like they are asking people who have the game via PS Plus Collection or PS Plus Essential to pay up, even if you paid for all the DLC.
I'll just focus on FO1/2/3 when I need a fix. I was thinking about diving into 76 but I am just so sick of Bethesda after Starfield and now this
As soon as Sony lets me upgrade, sure.
I booted up my PS4 saved games, from almost EIGHT years ago... "story" is completed but I think I've 70% of the map to explore yet. 60fps is amazing, and load times are quite fast, around 5 seconds, I remember those being quite slow back then.
Graphics are showing their age mainly talking about lighting... this game would be awesome with real time global illumination, everything is so flat that it hurts.
@VaultGuy415 Well that stinks 👎 I purchased the game on disc (the Pip Boy/Collector's Edition no less) at launch, and the season pass, then got the PS Plus version years later just so I didn't have to use the disc anymore, and gave the disc to a friend. I guess the penalty for opting for convenience after already having spent hundreds on the game is to be expected to pony up another $20 for the upgrade, when others get the upgrade for free after buying it for $5 recently. Good times!
I don't support publishers that agree to let a console maker buy them out so nope.
I remember getting the platinum for 4 back when it released. I remember how horribly buggy the settlement stuff was so getting the platinum was a pain, and once that shiny trophy popped, I haven't touched the game since.
I have it on my Steam library so I should install it and play it again for the hell of it.
Figured I'd give it another whirl as I never finished it the first time around
I've just started a game for the first time in about 5 years, and it does look nice - but compared to Cyberpunk, the people's faces are strikingly poor. I can live with that though; the slight crapness is quite charming.
I was going to play it but the download size is bigger than I thought it would be for PS5, maybe I'll just play the PC version.
Will play in time. tomorrow belongs to Stellar Blade
Can it be played in third person view?
@Dobbos Yes. Press the touchpad to switch from first person to third person.
I downloaded and fiddled about but the lack of trophy auto pop is going to make me stick to the ps4 version of fallout 4.
It's nice that they did this but Fallout 4 is my least favorite of the Bethesda era titles. Other than some of the companions I found 4 to be kind of forgettable. Far Harbor was also pretty awesome.
Once I'm done with a game I'm done. Especially if the game experience really resonated with me. I loved Fallout 4 first time through loved the decisions I made. That story and experience is done for me now. It's a bit different then rewatching movie/tv where sure you could pick out or notice something new but largely the experience is the same everytime. Unless it's an MMO or other type of never ending game I don't really have the desire to go back.
For those jumping back in hope you get tons of enjoyment on another go around.
@Moonmonkey the setting probably. I love rdr games but I can’t stand gta games
Was playing and then quit. Why? Take a guess. Preston Garvey is still broken in When Freedom Calls.
I’m speechless. I know Bethesda is incompetent but…wow.
I’ve played both Fallout 3 and 4 to 100% completion on the trophy stack and that’s enough to last me a lifetime for Fallout games. They’re aight but overrated IMHO.
@VicerExciser Its really strange they won't lift it when the PS5 version of ARK doesn't have restrictions, you can even download a Steamboat Mickey skin mod on ARK for instance on PS5.
I'll take another go at it. I played the PS4 version for about 15 hours and moved on. My backlog is insane though...
I bought it when it came out, quickly fell off it by the build stuff feature, if I knew sooner I'd never have bought it.
Learned then to wait for reviews before taking an interest ie.. if 5 has the same mechanic I'll not buy.
I played it on the PS4 back in 2017. It was an awful experience and I quickly shelved it. It pales in comparison to Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas.
It's quite baffling to think it's been surging in popularity recently, but it must be correlated with the Amazon TV series.
WTF.... there is NO Adaptive Trigger support, nor is there Dualsense Vibration as listed as features on the PSN Store. It's all still just regular PS4 controller mapped to a PS5 controller with NO new bells or whistles. I hope they actually patch it in. That or I hope they get nailed for false advertising
@jmads thanks for that. Might try it . The TV show was great ...my opinion .
Did not really care for it the first time around (bad story, bugs, little interactivity with the plot, terrible shooting, okay companions, horrible dialogue and VA Work) so it is a no from me.
The player animation is better running around. But it's no next gen. All I've noticed so far. Compared first half hour on PS5 and steam deck.
@itsfoz I had to re download 2. Of the DLC’s. Believe they upgraded them too.
They call me the wanderer, oh the wanderer. I ROAM AROUND AROUND AROUND AROUND.
put a couple hours or so in, with a deep into the game save, With the necc mods available. It's a noticeable bump in framerate indoors, but in the open world it's less distinguishable from the 30 fps mode in terms of fluidity.
Aside from that, it's a 9 year old Bethesda title on an engine already archaic at the time. So temper your expectations, as aside from the framerate bump it's a barebones upgrade. Combat, movement, and visuals all janky/clunky as hell.
Make sure you DL and enable the graphical improvement mods to at least help somewhat.
Enjoy exploring
I had a brief go this morning exploring my unfinished Batman themed settlement from years ago, my character is level 82 with pretty much everything done so I may start a new file and trophies don't auto pop either

Fired it up late last night — switched to performance mode just to see how it fared; tbh I never found framerates that much of a dealbreaker, but it's decent. What really felt like a gamechanger though was the loadtimes. While they're not as instantaneous as I'd expected for a game from 2015, they're noticeable enough to make fast travel much less of a slog.
Yes, I'm playing it for the first time, had the PS4 version in my back log for a while and when I heard of the PS5 upgrade I decided to promote it to the next game in the list, still trying to decide what kind of build to create.
Loved Fallout 3 (wasn't keen on NV) but Fallout 4 just left me cold?
I got the GOTY edition when it was cheap on the store (twin pack also included Skyrim, I think) so maybe I should try dipping my toe in again.
@ShadowofTwilight I guess you didn’t buy Spider-Man then?
Gonna download it this weekend .
I played it at launch but wasn’t too into it at the time, the show reignited my interest though.
Too bad 3 and NV aren’t on PS5.
@HeeHo
Not on PS4 nope, why?
Ive got it on disc and not sure if i get the PS5 upgrade for free but i wont be playing it again ive had my fill
Fallout 4 killed my interest in Bethesda games generally. They're no longer RPGs in my mind, as they've taken player agency out of the story and questing (and, to me, those are more central to being an "RPG" than simply having character build options).
'Bethesda Games' are their own thing at this point, to my mind at least, and that's fine, I just don't find them that interesting compared to something that allows you to influence the story and world through your choices.
I wish it was a better game they'd chosen to give a little touchup.
I'd take New Vegas, I'd even take 3. 4's such a bummer of a game, I wish it was better
@LordAinsley I'd love a 3/NV 4K 60 bundle
@Terra_Custodes the dream
@LordAinsley aye but that's what it will remain I fear. We never got a Morrowind or Oblivion re-release either it's sad. I can't afford PC gaming anymore, so my memories of those great games are all I'll have.
4 wasn’t my favorite fallout. The show has tempted me to play one again though
@Terra_Custodes they are on Xbox could get a series s
I played the main game and the dlc upto Nuka Cola World... at that point completely fell of it. My ps5 tells me I've stacked up 215 hours, so I have little intention of going back to it, even after really enjoying the TV show.
