The latest game from Nioh studio Team Ninja, Rise of the Ronin is a PS5 exclusive, complete with Sony's backing. While it does continue the developer's run of creating challenging action RPGs, Ronin is set within a sprawling open world — which is a first for the team.
Critic reviews have been slightly mixed. In our own Rise of the Ronin PS5 review, we praised its satisfying combat system and historical setting, but bemoaned its dated open world design and surprisingly unimpressive visuals. "Rise of the Ronin isn't a bad game; it's something debatably worse: completely forgettable. With dated open world design and a monotonous narrative, the cracking combat of a Team Ninja title is left to try and pick up the pieces," we wrote, awarding the game a 6/10.

Nah, not for me this one, I was tempted but reviews put me off.
Might be one to pick up down the line in a sale and when I am short of things to play
It kills me to say it but I haven’t had a chance to start it yet. I really have come to love Team Ninja games over the years so I’m almost certain I’ll enjoy this.
Will begin it tomorrow after I've finished Infinite wealth...which should be tonight
I hated Nioh, couldn't play more than 20 minutes. Loved Wo-Long, platinumed it with a friend. Hopefully Ronin is like the latter, then I'll probably pick it up.
@Reveluv curious as to why? I was the opposite: loved both Nioh games, but I bounced off Wo Long. I think it was the emphasis on parrying in the combat. Maybe I should give it another chance?
I'm so tired of these "good enough" gimmicky/ arcady/ supernatural Ubisoft type checklist games where the worlds just aren't dynamic or immersive. They're just full of artificial stuff made for the player. Tsushima suffered a lot from this as well.
Praying for the day Rockstar makes an openworld samurai game with the quality of RDR2. Slower, grounded, immersive, dynamic world/ NPC's, no climbing towers BS or whatever. Just an actual world, not a game world.
Other devs just cannot do it. The sadder I get about all this.
We have yet to have an amazing DBZ adventure game, an amazing Spider-Man game (that isn't written with garbage characters and actually is funny and actually HAS physics and gravity), an amazing Avatar (both IP's) game, an amazing Superman game. It's all just mediocre bleh
Absolutely not. DD2 all day.
Picking it up tomorrow from amazon pickup. Tho wont be playing for a while. Only just starting rebirth. Infinite Wealth and ff remake intergrade took longer than expected XD
Yeah I finished the prologue of it yesterday, haven’t been on it today though as I’ve been playing VII remake Rebirth and P3 Reload.
Been playing Returnal a lot recently as well which I got the second act of yesterday, gonna be taking a break from that for a bit now though.
Also got DD2 day one but I haven’t started yet as I still haven’t finished dark arisen yet probably will start it after finishing that and Rebirth
I've had it pre-ordered for ages now. I might play it before DD2 depending on how I feel, but right now everything is on the back burner until I finish FF7 Rebirth l.
I’ve always felt Team Ninja games were sort of just ok, you know? This one looked more interesting to me than their typical stuff, but everything I saw since the Game Awards looked sort of backwards facing as a Sony exclusive. The visuals in that TGA trailer, I remember thinking, “this looks older than Sekiro and Ghost.” And then, as we got more about the game, and it started getting compared to Ubisoft, I was like, “Ok, this could be different, but I hope it’s not a checkmark game, but more a mix of gameplay.” But I just never saw something that was actually promising about the game beyond Sony publishing it. I was hoping I was wrong about how it looked to me, but seems my instincts were right, given the reviews. I think I’ll pass on it for now and hope Sony’s publishing a more interesting title later this year. If the second half of the year doesn’t pick up, I might get it down the road. I mean, we don’t know if ANY big games are coming to PS5 (or Switch, for that matter) in the second half of the year. Right now, it’s looking like Wukong, Avowed, and Indiana Jones (and potentially Dreadwolf after years of troubled development) are the only big releases the second half of the year. If that doesn’t bulk up, yeah, that could work in Ronin’s favor. That line-up is a bunch of question marks to me, outside Indy, which may or may not actually land this year, given what we know, What a weird year in gaming to follow the heavy 2023. Smallest wishlist I’ve perhaps ever had in a year as of right now.
I can't wait to play it, but currently there are 5 other games between me and Rise of the Ronin:
Helldivers II, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Bulwark, Dragon's Dogma II, Unicorn Overlord... Rise of the Ronin.
Plus I've started reading epic fantasy novels again so it's probably going to be July before I start this game.
I went through the character creator last night though and really liked it.
Nioh 1 and 2 were both awesome games, but I've never been quite as sold on this one. Maybe one day but no rush to pick it up right now
I'm really enjoying it. I'm not burnt out on the Ubisoft style of open world games, so I'm having fun doing everything on the map.
Nope, it looks like an Ali Express version of Ghost of Tsushima.
I've really been enjoying my time with it so far. Nioh combat in a setting I always enjoy, plus beautiful ost 👍 What is there is fun. The open world isn't overly bloated either which I appreciate.
Such a shame but the reviews put me off.
We need Sony studios back with big AAA single player campaign games to make the PS5 sing and dance yet again and perform at its top level.
Dam shame they have disappeared until April 2025. Sounds crazy that but seems to be true.
Maybe one day, if AC Red hasn't come out by the time I get around to this
Probably when on sale, but I never buy games Day 1 anyway.
I enjoyed FF Origins Stranger of Paradise, so I will probably love this. The only thing that bums me is the lack of suppernatural enemies. Only human enemies could get borring in a 60 hour game, just like Ghost of Tsushima.
Planning on it and have my copy already. Dragons Dogma is too busy stealing my time though.
@Bentleyma This is how it goes for me too. I don't play the annual open world stuff from the likes of Ubisoft, so when other open world titles come along I have a great time because I'm not burned out already.
I’ll pick it up when it’s dirt cheap one day. Going to take quite a while to get through Unicorn Overlord and Dragon’s Dogma 2 anyway.
I'm loving the game. I don't mind a Ubisoft type checklist game. I'm too old and time restricted to worry about aimlessly looking for collectibles or solving complex puzzles. Plus give me an open world feudal Japan game any day and I'll play it Fr weeks on end.
@bestuardo it felt closer to Sekiro for me, and nioh was too clunky and too complicated for me.
I was disappointed with all the press around this and Dragons Dogma 2.
The frame rate issue in DD and the general disappointment in RotR with the story and gameplay loop.
Decided to buy neither and just work on my backlog.
Then both arrived in the post, guess I preordered them both at some point. RotR first, then I'll play DD after. Hopefully a few patches will have hit by then
I do plan to play it at some point but again my schedule is full. I'm still trying to finish Rebirth and then have Unicorn Overlord and Hi-Fi waiting on deck.
Never played a nioh game yet, mainly stick to j-rpgs though have dabbled in elden ring . Generally not a fan of open world gsmes as map is usually cluttered with repetitive tasks and story is stretched too thin
Bought dragons dogma 2 and this and loving rise of the ronin. Love the combat and the characters and the story! I’ll go back to dragons dogma once this has been completed but this one gripped me more. I think dragons dogma will take a bit more time to get into it
The gameplay is like a mix of Tenchu and Way of the Samurai. The open world is like an ubisoft game. The combat is brilliant. The graphics are good once you tweak the graphics, turn off motion blur etc. 8/10 so far
I will play rise of the ronin.not now. but my backlog of games is huge.and im having a lot fun with my backlog of games.word up son
RotR will probably be a Plus Extra game for me down the road.
I got this and have sold it already. Looks awful and the cities are laughable they’re that dated. So disappointed with this.
I'm playing it and it's not bad! I'm enjoying DD2 more and I honestly presumed it would the the other way around. The performance FPS wise isn't great considering it genuinely looks like it came out in 2014. It's not the mass market game I think a lot of players presumed it would be hence the lack of marketing. Even on the easiest dawn difficulty it's more akin to a challenging normal mode combat wise for those who don't enjoy souls like games. I'd rate it a 7.5 so far and may an 8 if the story has a good ending.
I'm just not a big team ninja fan anymore.
For me they peaked at Ninja Gaiden, I played the hell out of those games back in the day.
Give me a top tier point a to point b skill based ninja gaiden game like it was and I'd be down.
Way to many open world games these days which aren't that special anymore.
I'm sorry but open world games have become stale for me and if you want my attention for that sort of world you've got to bring something special to the mix instead of just fetch quests
Apparently I'm getting it as a birthday gift in a few days, so I held off on buying it. Looking forward to playing it then.
As for the second question, big Nioh fan - Nioh 2 especially. Haven't gotten around to Wo Long yet.
@Specky what's wrong with Kakarot?
I have it downloaded and ready to go. I am going to wait until I finish FF7 Rebirth, which I thought I was going to this weekend, but chapter 12 said no to those plans. The game opens up in a massive way. Hopefully, I’ll jump into it next week.
I’m enjoying the game so far I stop playing it to try get farther in dd2.
@Dudditz09 soooo you are not playing it?
@Danloaded so No?
@Cherip-the-Ripper
It's cheap and nowhere near the potential DBZ can meet.
Flying around feels like PS2 controls/ limited direction in comparison to flying in Arkham games.
Then you have those stupid collectibles just floating around in the air to just scream "hey! This is a vidyagame!" as if you're playing trash Sonic game, collecting rings.
Single A at best
Mabey somepoint but started forspoken over the weekend and really liking it.
When it works then probably dragons dogma next
Too busy playing Helldivers for this. Isn't everyone?
Yes I'm playing it...loving it too. Finished chapter 1 and 100%ed the first region. Put over 20 hours in this weekend 😅
Ghost of Tsushima set the bar so damn high for this type of game, that this looks like it was developed as a generic Ubisoft title by comparison.
I just started playing "Ghost of Tsushima" last week, does that count? 😂
Once they optimise frame rate, i will probably get this - it will only depend on how long this takes them, and whether I see any articles to say they now have it fixed.
@OldGamer999
I read an interesting comment somewhere (cannot remember where) which proposed that Sony are holding off all big 1st party major releases of the big budget adventure type until after Pro is released so they can use them to show off the system. Makes sense, even if im not sure what they could have had ready earlier.
I went with Dragon's Dogma. I'll go for something with more flavor every time. I've said it before, but this just looks incredibly bland. No shade to anyone enjoying it though! I'll probably grab it on sale down the road. I'd love a game like this or Ghost of Tsushima with a darker vibe, like Tenchu.
I returned my copy of DD2 that performance was broken and garbage. I will never trust these same reviewers ever again, going to get Ronin during the week. Every time I see people playing it they saying it's good.
@Specky that's how I feel about RDR2? Shrug.
It was tough for me to stomach how restrictive the missions were in a big open world that was so incredibly well-realized.
Also, one of the reasons I'm not interested in RotR is because it has no supernatural elements, so not sure how you mean.
Nah I'm not playing another open world game with checklists. That's just not a good open world game to me. Playing DD2 and it's just a much better immersive experience.
"Mom, can we have Ghost of Tsushima?"
"No, we have Ghost of Tsushima at home."
Ghost of Tsushima at home: Rise of the Ronin.
Started this RotR yesterday and I'm enjoying it so far. I had to drop to the easy setting pretty quickly though, as I'm getting too old to have to replay boss fights 20+ times to progress. I loved Ghost of Tsushima and played Tenchu to death back in the day. RotR feels a bit of hybrid of these classics, though not as smooth and beautiful as GoT it has more weapon options and the switching between allies mid combat brings something new.
The skill progression is not explained very well, but that seems to be a common issue with many games these days, requiring multiple internet searches for explanations and advise on priorities. That being said the new skills I have got thus far have been of clear benefit. Still early days but I would give this 8/10 so far.
I like the game looking like 7.5-8/10 around that area for me. The parrying is not as hard I thought it was going to be.
@DixyViking totally agree with the Tenchu vibes. Glad someone can see it.
I´ll get this down the line in a sale, doesnt seem like a game one needs to play day 1 so better to get it cheaper and fully patched
Definitely planning this for as soon as I can. I have no problem with 'ubi style' maps and quest markers, many of my fave games do this and I enjoy it fine.
Tem ninja games have always appealed, but I tend to struggle to get through them (old man reactions). The fact I can adjust the difficulty a bit gives me hope I can get through this one.
Lots of people who's opinion I value are enjoying this game for what it is, and I want to be one of them!
Waiting until a sale but definitely want to give this one a try.
@Specky
You are adorable if you think Rockstar is ever going to make a new IP. They are making way too much from GTA Online and Red Dead Online to bother with anything else. The old Rockstar that was all about making new games is dead.
This game is so generic that is brings nothing new to the table and is in no way pushing the PS5 makes this a hard pass for me
@Rich33
Think now that has turned around, with PS5 Pro maybe not shipping this year 2024 and maybe next year to have some games ready in 2025.
So games are late not PS5 Pro.
I can not vote in the poll because no option fits me.
I bought the game and played for around 8 hours and now i don’t want to play the game anymore.
Waste of money, i got to get better at reconizing if the game is for me or not 😭😅
Too busy with other games, gotta finish Rebirth and then start Unicorn Overlord, hopefully managing to finish the latter before Stellar Blade is released
@GoingTheDist
Definitely they're a bit disappointing. Their online stuff especially.
But my point is more that other devs/ publishers need to implement Rockstar philosophy
This game is getting a lot of negative media towards it and as someone who would always stay away from a game that isn't good I am very pleased with this one. Sure the counterparts to inspirational activities or gameplay may have "done it better" but so what that doesn't mean a game can't still be good! There is so much to do that leaves me feeling like I have plenty of choice in how I play or customise that time I'm playing. As well as the fact that these things people are hating on are actually in 1 game for the first time! I can't tell you how many games I've played that I constantly said "this would be so much better if you could just do this" and this game delivers that and more.
All in all I am loving every minute of this game and leaving no stone unturned (except treasure chests to get better end game loot!)
I made the mistake of pre ordering and am disgusted by its technical shortcomings so probably won't ever play it.
