If you can believe it, Skull and Bones is actually here. The Ubisoft live service project, which had been hit with so many delays over the years, is playable right now on PS5. The question, then, is whether you're eyeing the open waters yourself.
At the time of writing, we don't have a Skull and Bones review to pull quotes from — which makes this part of the article a lot more difficult — but we've seen plenty of split opinions floating around online. Some seem to think the game's fine, if a bit uninspired, while others are just dismissing it outright based on its development history and Ubisoft's seemingly eternal hunt for that live service cash cow.
So, are you playing Skull and Bones? Dare we ask if you've been waiting on this one, or has it simply arrived far too late? Have your say in our poll, and then raise your sails in the comments section below.

Turns out it's called Skull and Bones because that's what it is on arrival.
I'm too busy spreading hot lead-wrapped democracy.
This game is going to cost them big time. They should have cancelled it years ago, I honestly don’t know what they were thinking. Scratch that I do, they want those live service bucks.
Too busy blowing the s*it out of giant bugs.
@j2c They could not cancel the game as they made a deal with the government of Singapore. Were it not for that legal obligation it likely would have been canned a long time ago, as I can’t see how they will make anything close to their money back.
I really liked the naval combat in AC4, might give this a go if it shows up on PS+. It'll probably need the players.
No even if I was interested which I'm not Foamstars has 100% of my attention at the moment I'm addicted to it 😅
On a side note tho, how different are skull and bones and sea of thieves from each other now that has also been confirmed by our lord and saviour.
The poll results on this one must make grim reading for Ubisoft 😬
Nah I just can't. I'm not really too interested to begin with. I'm still playing Infinite Wealth with P3R and FF7 Rebirth waiting in the wings.
It's a real shame too. I love AC4 Black Flag but I just didn't want a multiplayer only version of just the ship combat. If it was a single player pirate focused (none of the AC lore attached to it) adventure I would have been all over this but alas.
Such a shame for the world's first AAAA game.
The beta was a complete dud, not even playing with my friends could make it fun. It's so bare bones I felt I'd seen everything the game had within a few hours aside from grinding for marginally better gear. It's actually impressive how Unisoft managed to mess up a game about pirates.
@Loamy did they call Calisto Protocol a AAAA game too? Only other example I know of is the Xbox studio The Initiative were called a AAAA studio (who are making the Perfect Dark remake)
I actually like Ubisoft games, but ship combat doesn't do it for me.
I only play one multiplayer game. Final Fantasy XIV forever! Though I am going to pick up Helldivers 2.
@Jayslow Yeah, Xbox is overhyping a game that is likely never coming out.
Why isn’t there a review of this game?
Of course I'm not. It looks terrible. I watched some footage and it looks like someone put "Ubisoft game" into an AI generator
This game is what we call niche. May it sink down deep to the bottom of the charts.
#5 on the UK Digital chart on release day, having also been available to download for free over the last few days = not so good.
@Kidfunkadelic83 In Sea of Thieves you're a pirate. In Skull and Bones you're a ship. They should have made Black Flag online and I'd be all in.
Nope it looks like boredom in it's purest form and besides even if I was slightly interested it has a Ubisoft logo so it will be half off in a couple of weeks.
I only like AAA games. 😜 Nah for real, I'll probably check it out at some point in the future when it's cheap.
I don’t think I have ever seen a good comment about anything lol
I’ll grab it when it’s free to play or on Gamepass in a couple months. The beta was fun enough, not going to be cynical about it, but it’s not a $70 type of game.
The beta was both much better than I expected and pretty boring. I may screw around with it a little more after some patches and a big price drop, because pirates.
I actually enjoyed the beta so might pick it up down the line. I only played it for an hour or so though so I’m not sure if repetition will start kicking in
I find it so strange how much hate Ubisoft gets. Sure their games aren't amazing, but I can't think of a recent game they've released that I'd consider bad.
Really enjoying it so far. Just built a ship this morning big enough to use a flamethrower so I'm excited to try that out when I get home. My friend and I tried to take in a tough boss fight in the beta and I got absolutely roasted by a flamethrower and my friend fled to the wind as my fiery screams echoed in the distance.
The first of many new AAAA Ubisoft games im very comfortable not owning
AAAA=$40 and I’d be tempted after the fun demo.
With that said… portals have been in stock for almost 24 hours on the PlayStations website. Glad I was able to snag one last night.
I would have maybe been interested if it wasn't £70 and live service.
If I'm paying £70 for a live service game then it needs to be a AAAAAA and not a merely AAAA game.
No, because I waited so much for this game, that I turned into skull and bones
Not shocked to see most people didn't know or didn't keep up with the release date....
It's just not for me. It's going to bomb isn't it

No, thanks. I'll wait for the rumored remake of Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag if I feel like playing a pirate-themed game.
By the way, in France 700 Ubisoft workers are on strike since the past two days. Basically they got a miserable salary raise and were told to produce more, while at the same time the incompetent executives got plenty despite their poor management. I haven't seen an article about that on Push Square.
@Ravix It maybe finds it's niche somewhere in the Mariana Trench?
First time hearing about it to be honest. It’s going to sound mean but it means nothing to me. I have no reference and so I’ll just wait until someone recommends it to even consider reading about it.
I have 0 interest in this. I don't want to get used to not owning the games I buy, after all. Also, a Quadruple-A game is way too much of a novelty for me.
@Enuo
I was gonna say something, but this comment says it all. Well played 👏
DEMOCRACY NEEDS ME!!!!!!
It would be nice as a free-to-play game with in-game purchases. I know it's designed to be a multiplayer game but come on... For 70+ bucks I want a story-heavy, single player pirate game with a multiplayer section. It's joke as it is for that price.
$70 for the Assassins Creed Black Flag Pre-Alpha released 11 years too late vs $7 for the finished product from 2013. Easy choice.
Quad A Cluster F.
I feel I'm not worthy of playing a AAAA game so I won't! I would also have to be flinging poo insane and desperate to buy a Ubisoft game at full price when their games drop in price faster than any other publisher.
@Mattock1987 We got review code quite late for this one.
Not playing it, don't really have interest in it. I hope people that did picked it up are loving it though.
@ShogunRok not a promising sign. Thanks for the reply
Ladies and gents, just like Suicide Squad, I do believe we have a consensus.
Played the beta and I was surprised how much I liked it. I ended up preordering. The combat is amazing, good progression, and its solo friendly. Also, the game is beautiful. Remember your character is your ship, your ship is your character, this is the best way to approach the game. It's crazy how many people are going out of their way to bash a game that they've never played (not all people, but many).
@Foxhound What's this about not owning your games? I see this misquote thrown around every time Ubisoft comes up. Do people not actually read articles anymore and just go with what headlines say?
@Kidfunkadelic83 well Sea of Thieves is a good game and Skull and Bones is erm......
In all seriousness, in Skull and Bones you just drive a ship like in Black Flag. In Sea of Thieves you control a pirate and have to manually sail the ship at the wheel, control the sails, load and fire the canons manually, I find it way more engaging
What will end up on PS Plus/Game Pass first - Skull and Bones or Suicide Squad. Place your bets now!
Most people sound like they ain’t even played the game just jumping on the bandwagon of hate , the internet is a funny place
As far as Live Service goes… Hmm what’s the opposite of “You had me at”? Having said that I still play tonnes of GT7 so I’m a filthy liar
When I hear live services i know it means cash before all...no thanks.
I picked it up and I’m addicted and loving it. 👍 Rollocks to the lot of you. (Get it?) 😁😉
I thought this and Sea of Thieves were the same thing and it was F2P. £70? Um no thanks. Not great marketing, I thought it had already come and gone.
@Kidfunkadelic83 Pretty different. Despite its more cartoon graphics, sea of thieves is defo more of a complex 'pirate sim', where you need to fix gaps in your ship with wood, find treasure maps to find treasure, etc. And can play with up to 4 people in 1 boat (bigger boats need bigger crews, to hoist the sails and repair, fire cannons, etc.)
S & B has basically streamlined all of that to be viable for 1 player, making it look more mature, but play more arcade-y. I don't think there's combat off boat, either, whereas SoT has some limited action when you disembark.
(It's basically a better game).
Shout out to @ShogunRok for "No, and I couldn't care less" as I almost always hear or see "I could care less", which makes no gd sense lol 🙂
@GKT Hahaha, I'm glad someone appreciates it!
I don't have a PS Plus account. Can I still play the game without it?
Played the Beta for a few minutes and that was enough. Battles were not interesting and other than some explosions couldn't see any damage to the ship. Not even a minute into the game I got a sign on the screen telling me to get back in the battlefield area. Ships appearing out of nowhere. Uninstalled and reinforces my views of Ubisoft games
Saw some of it on youtube and it didn't look even remotely interesting.
Also, too busy with Yakua LAD now and FF7Rebirth coming up, plus the 100 games still sitting in my backlog.
This game will just go off my radar, i might try it sometimes if it's free on ps plus or something.
I am and I've been enjoying it
Mainly in Co op but still all good solo
@Bentleyma it's because it's a popular thing to do as of late
