The rebooted, new-look Saints Row is here, and we quite liked it ( we even wrote a whole Saints Row Collectibles guide!) — but the game's received plenty of criticism elsewhere. As such, it's quite difficult to judge just how well this latest open world romp will resonate with players. It's got the advantage of launching at a time when there's not much else happening in terms of the release schedule, but will that be enough to make it a commercial success?
One of our trademark polls should give us some insight into the situation, then. Are you backing this new take on the Saints? Cast your votes, and then tell us all about your plans to conquer Santo Ileso in the comments section below.

Yeah i had it pre-ordered, bugs and issues aside its good fun and i feel once they patched them out and hopefully boost performance it should be a very fun solid game. End of the day its Saints Row though and its always been a mess technical wise and the writing has always been cringe that relies heavily on dumb humour and pop culture references so what did people expect? I went in wanting dumb fun in a big open world doing stupid crazy things and i've got that so i'm happy.
I was actually planning on grabbing this for my partner, as she loved the series back in the day, but after seeing how terrible it is at release she said nope.
If you watch some extended gameplay from those that have it, you can see just how a mess this game is, and how in all honesty, the critic reviews were being overly kind. I am genuinely bummed, because any form of NON-Ubisoft open world comfort food sounded like a fun pallet cleanser.
This just isnt it.
I’ll be waiting until it’s heavily discounted or on PS+, and only because I was a fan of the original games, else I wouldn’t bother with this at all.
I hated it from the moment I saw the first trailer. Possibly the worst marketing for a game, maybe ever. There’s nothing less cool than a bunch of middle aged people trying desperately to appeal to college aged kids. So bad!
But… I rented it anyway and (dare I say) it’s actually quite good. I’m surprised just how much I’m enjoying it so far. Gameplay is fun and customisation options for character/weapons/vehicles is huge. There’s an app on your phone lets you change your clothes and appearance at any time (when not in a mission).
Far exceeded my expectations honestly. I’ll probably go for the platinum.
I love the over the top action in sr3 and 4 and was hoping this was as ott and as much fun as those 2, but seeing in almost all reviews that it's a technical mess makes me skip it until a deep sale or game pass / ps plus
It looks so bad
Got it and it's good fun, granted I only have 4 hours but it's been fun so far.
Had it pre-ordered as there's nothing else to play at the moment, got to play something.
It's not that bad.
I will get it soon.its a fun video games franchises.word up son
I had it preordered and first impressions I was disappointed but now the main map has opened up I'm having a blast.
@Lavalera the only bug I have right now is when I buy clothes from a shop, it resets my equipped outfit back to its default colour (every time). A minor annoyance which I hope they fix soon. But I haven’t encountered any other bugs at all in the 6-7 hours I’ve played so far. The game is way better than I expected.
I was thinking about it then I read few reviews and some of thoses were mixed so I watched some streams, this is hard pass for me I think looked terrible, the best part was character creation says it all really.
Unless it's at a substantial discount I won't be playing it any time soon.
I did the same with Agents of Mayhem and I'm glad I did.
It’s like buying GTA if GTA was made in Bali. Hard pass
Haven't played since Saints Row Part one!
I have to be honest, even though I think the hate for this game is way overblown, and has been since it was announced, I was probably never going to play it. I'm not really a Saint's Row fan. 4 is the only one I liked, and that's mainly because it's the closest this to Prototype 3 that we're ever going to get.
@BritneyfR_ee OK good to hear. It's so weird to read user impressions here saying it's not that bad while every reviewer said it's a big mess. Was there like a huge day 1 patch or something that you know of that they might not have?
The first 2 games were my favourite and real GTA competitors if you ask me.
Then they decided to go over the top with humor. It's probably a good decision from a business perspective as to distance themselves from being a GTA clone. But man, I loved the style of the first two games and the idea of building and customizing your own gang.
Also, it feels weird that Johnny Gat isn't in the remake. If he was in the game I would probably have bought the game at launch.
Yes but on PC. Performance is okayish, it’s holding a steady 4k60fps on Ultra but there’s ghosting, some pop-in and low texture in places… it’s good fun but the world feels incredibly empty.
Am I missing out on some cool DualSense functionality though?
@Lavalera there was a big patch when I installed the game yesterday morning so that could be a reason for the lower scores? But most games launch with day one patches these days. It would be a shame if it was marked down because of that. A lot of sites delay publishing their final score when there’s a multiplayer element - I think day one patches should also be taken into account when sites publish their reviews. Or at least have a disclaimer stating they played the unpatched version (and a day one patch is now available and may fix whatever technical issues they experienced).
Got a feeling this will be a freebie on EGS before long.
@BritneyfR_ee @Lavalera I mentioned this in the review comments but Saints Row did get a huge patch during the review period that fixed so much stuff. Before that, the game was a mess, absolutely packed with bugs and performance issues.
If I had reviewed the game before the patch released, it would have been a 4 or 5/10. Would definitely be a shame if that's what some other reviewers did, because that's not the version that actual consumers will end up playing.
I'm a fan of the series but something about this one felt off from the start. I passed. I might get it on the cheap down the road.
@KundaliniRising333 the animation and movement is worse than saints row 3 too , i never played any other ones after 3 , but SR3 had fluid running and camera shake that made it feel more natural , but that’s gone in this game . the shooting and physics were all better .
what the hell happened , i for the life of me don’t understand why games regress or get green lit passed obvious problems .
I think it’s a good series but didn’t buy this one. First the general characterisation and tone put me off, then the poor (compared to previous series) character customisation tool sealed it.
i ain’t buying this for no more than $15 or if it’s a free way for me to play it . it gets brownie points from me though for the main poster girl , love short haired women . 😁
I bought it and I love it
Despite the very mixed reviews, they all mention that it's actually fun to play. I'll probably pick it in a sale sometime. £70 for any game nowadays is ridiculous.
I got everything I need to know from ACG and Skill Up to not buy this heaping pile of crap
Love Saints Row series. Won't buy this unless it's like 5-10 dollars.
@thefourfoldroot1
I got the Boss creator thingie (whatever it was called) and man it was such a dissapointment.
I’ve played about 4 hours so far, i’ve had a lot of fun but man it it’s not finished, bugs, visual glitches, turning on adaptive triggers flips movement controls, and so on. Game needed a couple more months in the oven. plus there’s no nipple color slider and female body hair options which is deeply disappointing
I liked Saints Row 3 & 4 and I bought this one and I sort of disappointed. The game looks dated and the guns sound terrible. plus when aiming and trying to shoot with your guns it feels very stiff plus the driving is ass in the game. I do like they gave us the option to customize our character and walk around nude.
I bought it but just because I pre-ordered on Amazon probably 5 months ago and totally forgot about it. Showed up yesterday and it was the first game ever where I was UPSET it arrived.
I had every intention of buying it day one as long as it was as good as 2 or 3, but reviews said otherwise.
I’m going to buy it but it will be when it’s on sale. If it had launched at 40$ I’d bought it still day one. Now though, by November I’ll only buy it for 25$ or less.
I only ever played SR 3 and 4 and certainly enjoyed them for all their silly humour but after the hideously mediocre Agents of Mayhem I was wary about Volition plus I’m more than busy enough with replaying The Witcher 3 (Pretty much finished for the 5th time after 200 more hours takes me to about 850 hours overall!) and God of War not to mention trying to get back into my frequent movie a night routine so I waited for reviews and thankfully avoided a potentially catastrophic purchase. From what I’ve seen and heard I can’t see myself picking it up until it’s under £10-15 and I might even skip it altogether. Here’s hoping GiW Ragnarok doesn’t slip and gives me a top tier game to see the year out. Still feeling.a slight burn that after nearly 2 years there are way too few unmissable PS5 only titles as this could have been a contender but quite clearly is anything but …
The dialogue is what kills me though. Like I don't mind some cringe dialogue but my god, it really is just horrible. Don't know if I can stand it for a full game
I would buy this for $20. Maybe.
I liked The Third but am not really a fan of the genre. So maybe I'd play it on the cheap in a couple of years.
As someone who played and got all the trophies for every Saints row game prior to this one...I'm passing on it. Not because of the "usual" complaints though but rather because it's mechanically a PS3 game. Saints Row hasn't evolved with the times...I don't know why they waited so long to release another one if it was just going to be the same thing again.
Debating getting this on PS4 Pro. I'm not bothered if it's 30fps. I just want it to be stable. Might wait for patches and a sale.
I bought the original game not this trash reboot lol
Bought it, love it. Needs some finishing work, but I've yet to encounter anything that wasn't solved by a save file reload.
I've noticed a TON of actors not looking at the actor they are speaking to. I don't think it's intentional, I think someone missed a few "actor look at" commands somewhere. But overall, it's good, and I'm really enjoying the camaraderie between the four.
The Outrun Synth radio station is my favorite, very reminiscent of Surviving Mars' excellent soundtrack. Tumbleweed is good too, kind of akin to K-ROSE from San Andreas.
Just look at that harmless looking crew of baristas.
@Lup
Indeed. Couldn’t make the characters I was used to making even from IV
No, its not for me. Ive got rollerdrome and two point to last me until tlou part 1 comes out. Might get it on the cheap if they sort it out.
Tried it for free and I am glad I did. Average game at best and not worth more than $20.
I had planned on buying it, but ended up building a mini-pc for emulation and media streaming a few weeks ago, and got it free with my gpu.
I'm only a few hours in, but I'm having fun with it.
The first game was really good and I remember enjoying the second and then it got weird.
Though, I will say, Gat Out of Hell was actually really good and I enjoyed that massively, but it wasn't your typical Saints Row game.
@GagaOooLaLa i think that many haters desided right there when they first saw the first trailer and stuck with that hate. dont understand. i bought it , and i cant wait to play it with my girlfriend. it will be sooo much fun. i know it. video game is about having fun. thats why goat simulator is so popular.dumb fun. its not about the story or how realistic tha game is. sometimes you just want to relax and enjoy yourself.
Might play it when it comes to plus.
@nomither6 uuuh, i did not like the camera shake when you are running in saints 3. i could not stand it, felt dizzy.
@bigmike102477 turn down deadzone to 1 and turn down the sensitivite. the controlls will feel a lot better. not so stiff.
@stefan771 good for you. i am going to play it too. i am creating a lot of characters now =) the character creator is great.
The current plan is to pick it up cheap to play with a friend, shame that it's only 2 player but c'est la vie.
Saw someone stream a bit of it, made me want to replay 2 and 3, maybe grab this for $20 in 6 months.
@MattBoothDev SR1 was the origin story of the saints and their rise to power in Stilwater. SR2 was about the saints getting back on their feet and regaining control of the city. SR3 was pretty much the same thing but with the added bonus of getting revenge for Gat. SR4 was about....aliens I think
In any case it was a wild ride watching the saints go from humble beginnings of forming to protect their neighborhood to fighting aliens in a simulation. I'm not sure what this reboot is about, but I've heard it has something to do with student loans?
This game will be forgotten within 2-3 more days it's so bad. Zero plans on ever getting it. I'd be down for a sr1-2 remaster though if they don't screw that up too.
After seeing the trailer, I wanted to play GTA.
I haven't bought the reboot yet, waiting until the price is below $25 New.
@kenshin4ever that was just too bad for you then
@ryanburnsred Biden has written off $10,000 in student debt for millions of people. Looks like the Saints are saving America once again 😂
I have not bought this game yet. I'm still semi hyped, but I don't want to pay full price now, having read some things, and also with the chance of bugs making it an even worse an experience. As I want this game for relaxing mindless madness, not frustration and disappointment.
This is the one game that has made me pause on buying digitally lately, as normally I wouldn't be able to wait. The annoying thing is, digital sales are pretty rubbish on PS Store for new stuff. But every so often you can luck out. I suppose it being a non PS exclusive is a good thing in that regard
Recently played the third one and really enjoyed the wacky characters but not sure if I'll get this. Probably a couple months down the line once it's patched and it's not so buggy
Liked SR2 back in the day. But after playing so many Ubisoft games over the years. I would rather avoid the game as I am kinda sick of this style of openworld tbh.
It looks like a 360 game, the dialogue is awful, the characters are utterly inconsistant... there's no way they don't take a big old bath on this..
I loved the old games at the time but from what I've seen this one really stinks of "how do you do, fellow kids" tbh. I might play it if it ever goes cheap enough but my expectations are very, very low.
SR was always peak "f*** it lol shoot dat grandma", intentionally stupid, offensive, take nothing seriously, over the top millennial humour. It was amazing - then. It should have stayed there. Nostalgically wishing everything was still like that, vs still behaving as if it is even though everything around you has already changed are very different things. Obviously that kind of game wouldn't be received the same way now with good reason, and sad as it is to have to move on, it's right that they didn't try it. Personally though, that says to me let it rest, don't dig it up and try to force it into something it's not, that just comes across as really pandering and cash grabby. Even if all you care about is the gameplay, it's prolly not gonna be all that good in a game made for such corporate bs reasons.
Will play it once it inevitably comes to PS Plus
Was hyped for this but glad I didn't pre order! From various reviews and my own hands on experience this reboot is a massive failure, which is a real shame.
I pre-ordered the game as soon as it got announced. Then I changed to the notorious edition. Me personally I kind a lile the game as its a proper rebeet ro how the saints became the saints. So far I'm loving the game and I will keep playing it. I will be playing it over and over again doing all of the campaigns I started on entrepreneur so I will be doing the others as well I can't wait to continue the story.
It's a $15 pick up for me. I might even be able to wait for it to be $10
If I want to play Saint's Row in the future I will buy Saint's Row 3 for the Switch, but I have no intent on getting Saint's Row 2022.
I've been a saints row fan since the first game. I know saints games aren't innovative or graphically stunning but compared to the other saints games this one looks amazing. I noticed alot of pop-in on 1080p but when I put it on 4k it works well on the PS5. Glitches & bugs are another thing tho.. some are funny & some are so frustrating to where I'd have to start missions over. It's still a fun game & I hope future patches fix the bugs. But I'm loving it so far.
I bought Saints Row 1 on day one and loved it, more than GTA. I loved it.
2 was a day one buy and I loved that too.
3 I didn’t buy - I was really disappointed by the change of tone and didn’t want to support it.
4 I bought on sale and loved it. I thought I’d probably hate it but would at least have a bit of fun driving around. It was silly but once I got used to it I think I liked it as much as 1 and 2 for different reasons. It was ironically a great superhero game haha.
The new one doesn’t look like Saints Row to me and I haven’t bought. I might pick it up in sale but I’m also thinking to just skip due to bad reviews and what looks like a bad direction. I’m older now and have less time to play games so I don’t really want to waste money on something that might not be good.
I would buy a good saints row, I’m just not sure this is a good direction. I think I’d rather try 3 on PS5 so I could give it a fair chance honestly.
@ryanburnsred i skipped 3 because it was such a change in direction and tone, I remember being so disappointed in hearing it.
But gave 4 a chance while sick from work and on sale and that was funny as hell! It’s about the boss of the saints becoming president and defending the USA from an alien invasion haha
@nomither6 too bad for me? why? i like the game.
@kenshin4ever That is crazy that we have to do that. I just returned it and got my money back for the game.
