And just like that, another annual Evo event is over. Just in case you had no idea if was happening, Evo 2023 took place over the weekend, welcoming thousands upon thousands of fighting game competitors and spectators. Most of the tournaments were streamed live online, with the finals for Marvel vs Capcom 3, Tekken 7, Guilty Gear Strive, and Street Fighter 6 all wrapping up on Sunday (or Monday, depending on where you live!).
Evo 2023 also played host to a number of intriguing announcements, spread across multiple games. Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising finally got a release date, for example, a new Under Night In-Birth was announced, Fatal Fury's revival looks cool, Tekken 8 got two cheeky character trailers, and Johnny is coming back in Season 3 of Guilty Gear Strive. Exciting times for fans.

Until this article, I didn't even know it was a thing. There's a lot of esports events out there, can't know them all.
Actually that should be a poll option.
Casting a biased vote because I worked on the GGST finals intro
@Voltan Oooh, congrats!
I didn't watch but that MK1 trailer was great.
Changing the format to Top 6s was a great idea because it stopped tournaments from going on too long. Also doing announcements before the matches is more appealing for those that just want the updates.
The way they hyped up the SF6 finals was all sorts of hype and adds to the overall feel good factor that the franchise is in right now.
Also kind of mental that Evo has the keys to the city of Vegas now, shows you how much it has grown, plus coming back from the unpleasantness of 2020.
As for the announcements, there wasn't any of the "OMG, WOW" reveals for me but decent stuff.
But Marvel and Capcom need to wake up, 200 to 300k watched the UMVC3 finals. People still care about the franchise, at the very least give us a comprehensive collection from X-Men children of the Atom to MVC2 to get everyone back onboard.
It was ok, though it was let down by half the grand finals being Mirror matchups.
@ShogunRok Thanks! It was a super fun project.
Seriously though - The finals AND all of day 2 for Strive was super hype.
I'm yet to watch the SF6 finals because I couldn't stay away unfortunately but having the Capcom band play player intros live on stage was a nice touch!
Also, before SF6 finals, Rick teased EVO coming to "somewhere new" besides USA and Japan in 2024 and I gotta assume that means Europe. If that happens, I'm 100% going!
@AdamNovice Yeah I was sceptical about the change to Top 6 but think it worked out well.
Didn't watch as much as I wanted tbh, more dipped in and out. I didn't expect Leffen to get past Noobie or Umisho, so that was a bit of a surprise.
Good to see Marvel on main stage as well, wonder what else they'll bring back.
One thing I noticed, all winners (bar MK11) played on stick. Interesting to see in the era of as optimal controllers as possible, as stick is supposed to be the least optimal. Another case of play with what's comfortable to you.
@DrClayman Yeah I used to believe that sticks would make you better but really it comes downs to lots of practice and a setup that suits your style.
I thought it was one of the best ones put on so far. The venue seemed really good for the live fans, the shoutcasters were on point and the competition level was high.
Very well done event and a lot of fun to watch.
NinjaKilla taking out the twins for a comeback victory was great to watch. That was some crazy high level fujin play.
How did I not know TMNT stuff was coming to Street Fighter 6? I may actually have to buy some.
Best part of this years EVO was and I’m not being sarcastic here the fact every games grand finals I’m pretty sure outside of SF6 AND EVEN THAT COULD HAVE BEEN A KEN MIRROR MATCH were all mirror matches. Certain ones like MVC3s Zero May Cry is like whatever that games never getting patched and adjusted. But with certain ones like KOFXVs King Of Khronens it’s like yeah he’s been dominating competitions since launch it would be nice if next EVO was run by like a squad of NADJ, SYLVIE, and KIM. Overall tho a excellent time overall and honestly it makes me proud that alongside my single player games I have installed like TLOU1 and SpongeBob that I have basically all the next gen fighting games installed: KOFXV, GGST, SFVI, DNF Duel and soon to be MK1 or M1K. Of course I’m also looking forward to adding Tekken 8 there hopefully soon. And to cap it off I’m very excited to dive back into these games with all the DLC announced in the coming weeks like NAJD, and Johnny and everything else. I LOVE FIGHTING GAMESSSSSSSSS.
The Street Fighter top 6 was amazing! I was rooting for Punk, but AngryBird really rose to the occasion. It was awesome.
I don't follow Evo much other than for the announcements of any new DLC or games. Was disappointed we didn't get an official release date yet for Tekken 8, which is easily one of my most anticipated games, but the new character reveals were cool. Also liked the SF 6 DLC announcements and a new Fatal Fury is very good news.
