Konami unveiled official in-engine footage of Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater earlier this week, in a bid to show off the remake's technically impressive visuals. Crafted with Unreal Engine 5, this yet-to-be-dated revival is clearly hoping to wow in terms of graphics, but the reaction to said footage has been a little more divided than we expected.
From our comments section to social media and sites like Reddit, there are Metal Gear fans who think that the remake simply doesn't remain faithful to the original game's style. We've seen it be labelled "soulless" and "generic", which is perhaps a little harsh, but we can kind of understand where the criticisms are coming from.
Metal Gear Solid 3 certainly had a distinct visual style, but we also need to remember that it was a PS2 title. We never really expected this remake to recapture that exact look when it's being graphically rebuilt from the ground up.
Still, we'd love to know what you think of Delta's graphics. Does it really look "soulless"? Or do you think it looks really good? Vote in our poll, and then tighten that bandanna in the comments section below.
What do you think of Metal Gear Solid Delta's new graphical style? (1,413 votes)
- I love it, it looks great
- I think it looks pretty good
- It looks fine, no big deal
- I'm not sure, we need to see more
- I'm not sold, something's off
- I think it looks bad, too generic
- It looks terrible, misses the point completely

Looks awrite 👍
Soulless is a good descriptor, it lacks an actual art direction. MGS3 is hazy on purpose, it’s similar to what we’ve seen of the Silent Hill 2 remake in that any ambience is replaced by crystal clear ‘realism’.
All the games in unreal engine 5 so far have just looked so samey. It just looks like everyone’s trying to turn up the detail with barely any considerations for anything else.
@nessisonett yep And there is something going on Snake face...it's not him.
It looks really good.the graphics looks fantastic. Word up son
Absolutely love it.
Can't come soon enough.
It looked incredible from a visual standpoint. I would imagine the people saying it looks "soulless" are probably referring to the fact it's just a remake. Every remake is going to feel at least a little soulless and I say that as someone who is excited for this game!
It looks like one of those hd remasters people make and put on youtube, it looks like it was made with no love for the original
I have no problem with the graphics, I do find them a bit "generic" but that's to be expected, it lacks something that I can't quite pinpoint. What I do find unsettlig is the motions, it looks quite janky, like a game made in Unity or even Dreams, where the stock engine gives everything this robotic lifeless motion. The way he leans into trees or stars walking looks awful.
Yeh I think it looks cool graphics wise. I like the environs, Dead Space with its lighting and particle effects might be the most fantastical thing I have ever goofed off at so paying attention to these remakes now
Environments look good, Snake looks bad.
It lacks something ..... I don't know..... But something feels OFF....... movement looks like Sniper Elite games
@Super_Pine_89 Absolutely my thoughts too. I would like to see a redesign. Right now he looks nothing like Kurt Russell or Sean Connery. Unless they are planning to remaster the whole series I cannot see how either Solid/Liquid/Solidus can be clones of him or how his appearance in either MG2 or MGS4 parries with this.
There is no debate, IT IS soulless and generic, the animations all look off, the gameplay from what we’ve seen looks more Subsistence in terms of animations etc so I highly doubt its going to have MGSV style controls, which lets be real in 2023 a MGS game needs.
Snake just looks meh, level geometry is still the same PS2 geometry with zero changes and the fancy graphics dont hide that, its honestly really low effort.
MGS is my favourite franchise of all time but a Soulless 1-1 remake of 3 really isnt needed given MGS3 is available on modern platforms anyway, MG and MG2 need remakes that is all.
Good lord, people are hard to please!
I think they look fantastic - especially for a work-in-progress!
Looks decent. Could be much better I think, ( hello RE2/FF7)
I'd have preferred they put the effort into the master collection instead of just mgs3
So sadly I expect Vol.2 to be just as lazy
Looks amazing, I wish the Tomb Raider remasters were getting the same treatment
They should have just remade it in the fox engine with the controls like the phantom pain. Looks pretty good though, except for Snake's face!
It looks fine.
People complain about the lack of haze in these PS2 remakes, but a lot of that was there to compensate for the tech limitations at the time.
That said, I don't trust Konami to give us a worthy remake of MGS3 on its own.
@Exerion76 i think the issue with realistic graphics nowadays is that they have no stylized aesthetic to them anymore , like @nessisonett said, they’re just plain and crystal clear with no ambience. it’s the same thing with the re4 remake compared to the original
@nomither6 That was my main criticism of the GTA3 "remaster" such as it was. Liberty City went from looking like a genuinely dark and dirty looking place to somewhere that actually looked quite nice. Even the litter was gone. It doesn't look "lived in" anymore, much less America's seedy underbelly with water so toxic it poisons you in seconds.
Same thing as the SOTC remake, really. Some of that PS2 dreaminess is inevitably lost. It’s ok, though. No way those animals will look as good as they do in game, I bet.
Find the critique slighty bizarre actually. Not sure what the expectation would be... A remake of a 20 year old game that somehow maintains a PS2 aesthetic?
That seems like an exercise in futility to me.
My only comment is that Big Boss' face is going to take a bit of getting used to! Seems altered, rather than remade.
@pumpkin_head “ That seems like an exercise in futility to me.”
you could’ve just said you didn’t care from the beginning instead of this -
“ Find the critique slighty bizarre actually. Not sure what the expectation would be... A remake of a 20 year old game that somehow maintains a PS2 aesthetic?”
which is not what anyone is saying at all
@nomither6
Stand by the point completely, I could have maybe said partially maintains a PS2 aesthetic, but that wouldn't have made much difference.
I can't see the logic in being critical of the art style in a AAA remake (of this nature) in this way.
The point of contention, if that's the opinion, needs to be with there being a remake in the first place - which is absolutely not what people are saying (unless I am mistaken, which I might be!)
Metal Gear is my favourite series, I'm looking forward to the remake, but accept that it will probably be different in many respects.
Feels a bit like negativity for the sake of negativity...
Visually it looks pretty darn good. I just feel like my excitement is dampened slightly by the idea that this looks like a 1:1 remake. I'm guessing there will be some interface changes, QoL updates, etc., but the map areas so far look 1:1 to the original, just prettier.
I think remakes, especially when we're talking 3 generations ago should bring something new, strike that balance of recreating the original but modernizing it, improving it, etc. Like I want to play MGS3 and experience something new and better than the first time I ever played it. I'm worried this is just gonna be exactly the same game but just with great visuals (not that it's a bad thing).
Loved them. Games are bordering on photo realism now. The bird in the trailer is just sensational! Outrageous even..
I want to like it badly but I dont..
It looks great, but I think I would like to start seeing more stylized game visuals rather than photorealistic visuals. Games with photorealistic visuals are starting to blend in with me. Not saying every game has to have some sexy cartoon shader or anything, but I would like more distinctiveness in games of this generation.
@pumpkin_head ''Feels a bit like negativity for the sake of negativity...''
This is a hardcore PlayStation fansite. By its very definition few of us here are going to be casuals and thus are going to have strong and passionate opinions on gaming. By which I mean, we are going to be nitpicky at times, we are going to focus on things that other people will not care about. This is not negativity for the sake of negativity, this is the expression of love that we have for our favourite franchises and characters. We want to see it done right - we just all have a different idea of what ''right'' is. And for me, ''right'' in this context is all about atmosphere, and I am not yet convinced I am seeing it.
@LifeGirl
Don't doubt anyone's right to an opinion, passionate or otherwise. And I'm on here because I share the same passion, obviously.
I just don't understand how you get to the opinion some are offering. It's a remake, twenty years, and three generations down the line. The atmosphere is going to be different by definition. Beyond that, I don't think it's possible to draw the conclusions people are drawing from the limited exposure thus far. I'm not convinced of much of anything about the game yet, other than it doesn't seem like overt dud/disaster. (Although it still might be!)
Think it's also worth mentioning that the site ran an article yesterday saying they thought it looked sick, and in this very article they are surprised by some of the backlash. (Which is too strong a word but you know what I mean).
Looks like MGS5 and that's no bad thing as even now its stunning. Honestly its visuals aren't my concern its everything else and i'm concerned without Kojima it will lose what makes the series and especially MGS3 so bloody good.
I mean... yes, it looks good. But, i'm not interested.
I think it looks great but it’s weird having these graphics but not having a more open world. This kind of area/level/section thing going on with 3 worked on PS2 due to the console limitations but it’s going to be weird with these next gen graphics. Like everything will look so real but you won’t be able to walk on it or interact with it. I’m not saying this or all games need to be open world but it’ll be strange. I wonder if they’ll make it so that every area flows seamlessly into the next without the transition screens. Maybe the area name just pops up onscreen.
I also think the game looks like a fan-made tech demo. Like the Super Mario 64 what-if Unreal engine trailers. It also weird without Kojima…
I’m going to watch this closely and I’ll probably buy it but it intrinsically feels wrong, me being a huge Kojima fan.
Technically it looks impressive but there's something a bit too plain about it, like it's missing artistic direction
They just need to put the classic yellow filter on rather than the European city filter, which looks grey and lifeless.
Just wack your tv onto the warmest setting and tweak colours yourself, I guess. It will help a little.
As for the game's soul itself. We shall see 🤔
It looks good there's no denying that.
There are some caveats though:
So take this showcase trailer as just a nice thing to see, don't raise any expectations that you'll be experiencing it when the game launches, you'll only be disappointed.
As for the "soul" of a game: you won't determine that from a few disconnected scenes.
It won't (and can't) look like the original, if it was meant to be a Remake, and not a Remaster. The gamers that are mad over this change in graphics can still play the original if they consider it such a masterpiece, no need for pointless drama imo...
I think it looks good, but not great. Of course, this is pre-alpha footage, so take it with a heavy grain of salt. Though Snake looks off. He no longer looks like Kurt Russell.
It reminds me of those videos you see on Twitter every now and again, where someone has made Mario in Unreal Engine.
I just dont see the amazing graphics what some people are seeing and what push Square have said.
When we have had the resident evil series brought back to life in what seems a total from the ground up remakes of the classics.
Dead Space being made from the ground up, even going as far as redesigning realistic sounds.
Demon Souls an absolute master of a remake visually but with the unique controls what made demon souls.
This just looks like they've taken mgs 3 and literally put a 4K filter over the top. Yes the environment looks good but those character models, are straight out of mgs3 with a 4k sheen over them.
Looks amazing, but those look like PC graphics, not PS5 graphics. I could be wrong but I doubt it!
