The phrase “consumer friendly” gets tossed around a lot and is rarely ever true. All companies want to extract money from your wallet at the end of the day.
But there are scales to this sort of stuff, and some organisations tend to be fairer than others.
PlayStation is often criticised as being the most anti-consumer gaming company of all; this is a sentiment that dates all the way back to the PS3 era, when the console’s $599 price instantly became a meme.
Before we dig deeper into this article, we’d like to underline that Sony still makes a lot of questionable decisions, and there are no shortage of things to criticise.
However, as the Internet explodes over the Switch 2’s high software prices, we figured it was worth rounding up some of the ways the PS5 is a touch more tolerable than its newest rival right now.
For Starters, Party Chat Is Free

When the Internet started speculating about the Switch 2’s mysterious C button, many wondered what kind of functionality it would offer.
It turns out, it’s just party chart.
Here’s the kicker, though: in order to take full advantage of the C button, you’ll need an active Nintendo Switch Online membership. There will be a free trial available for first-time purchasers, but beyond that, you’ll have to cough up.
To be fair, Sony does lock some of its community features behind PS Plus: the oft-overlooked Share Play, for example, which lets your friend take control of your console and play “local” multiplayer games over the Internet is a paid feature.
But the core, basic social functionality of party chat – it’s free on the PS5, and has been for over a generation now.
Honestly, Upgrades Seem Fairer
Sony has attracted enormous criticism from all corners of the Internet for its emphasis on remasters, but its approach – while not perfect – is much fairer than what Nintendo’s announced thus far.
Ever since launch, backwards compatibility has ensured many games play better on the PS5 than on the PS4. Some, like Days Gone and Horizon Zero Dawn, got free updates unlocking their frame rates and boosting their resolutions.
This is similar to what Nintendo’s offering with The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, although it’s bundling in some superfluous mobile app features and charging $10 for the privilege. To be fair, in the case of the Zelda games specifically, an active Nintendo Switch Online subscription will get you the upgrades for free.
But when Sony’s charged $10 for upgrades, it’s offered full-blown remasters. We still haven’t seen enough of Days Gone Remastered to know if it’ll be worth the upgrade, but past attempts like Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered and The Last of Us 2 Remastered have delivered seriously impressive overhauls. The former in particular completely transforms the presentation with more than just a mere resolution bump.
It should also be added that many of these $10 upgrades on Sony’s side include new content, like the roguelike mode in The Last of Us 2 Remastered. Comparably, Nintendo will charge you $20 for the new content in Super Mario Party Jamboree and Kirby and the Forgotten Land.
PlayStation’s not completely perfect, of course. The Last of Us: Part 1 and Until Dawn, both full-blown remakes, were flogged without any upgrade option. While the platform holder would justify that by saying it completely rebuilt these games, for the purposes of fairness, we figured it was worth pointing out.
Full Games Tend to Be Included on Discs

Let’s get the obvious caveat out of the way: almost all games in this era have day one patches. We don’t love it, but due to the lag between a game going gold and landing in your hands, developers will often spend additional time refining their games while they’re being manufactured. That means you will often have to download patches for your latest physical games.
However, it’s extremely rare for a game to ship on the PS5 and not be playable out of the box. Are there examples where it’s happened? Yes, but it’s not common in the slightest.
Nintendo is introducing a new model with the Switch 2 named Game Key Cards, which allows developers to offer a physical product, but it’s one you’ll need to download.
While it does still allow for resale and trading, you simply won’t be able to play your game if you haven’t connected to the Internet and downloaded it first.
This raises all kinds of preservation issues: what will happen to your software in the future if Nintendo ever shuts down its servers? What if it ceases supporting the Switch 2 eShop like it already has with the Wii U and 3DS stores?
It’s not something you should be worrying about as an early adopter, we suppose, but in the case of physical PS5 games, at least you know your disc will pretty much always be available to install in some capacity.
First-Party Software Is Cheaper (For Now)

$69.99 is a lot of money for a first-party PS5 game, but it’s cheaper than the new standard Nintendo’s trying to introduce. Mario Kart World costs $79.99 new, and in Europe, you’re looking at €89.99 (~$99) for a physical edition, which is frankly absurd.
To be fair, it seems like Nintendo’s adopting flexible pricing, and the new Donkey Kong Bananza game will match Sony’s first-party offerings at $69.99. But if you’re not upgrading the likes of Super Mario Party Jamboree and Kirby and the Forgotten Land, you’ll once again be spending $79.99 for the Switch 2 Editions outright.
It’s also worth mentioning that Sony tends to discount faster and deeper than its Japanese rival.
While its sales have certainly gotten less compelling over time, Tears of the Kingdom has never gone lower than $49.99 on the Nintendo eShop – and that was just once. A comparable exclusive, like, say, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 has reached lows of $39.99 on the PS Store on at least three occasions now.
In defence of Nintendo’s approach, its reluctance to reduce prices does keep resale values higher, which some may appreciate.
And to be fair, Sony’s no angel here. Most recently, it’s jumped on the trend of charging extra for early access. If you want Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, for instance, it’ll cost you $69.99 – but in order to play it as early as possible, you’ll need to cough up $79.99.
Yes, it’s better than Nintendo’s recent announcements, but we still must admit it’s all trending in the wrong direction.
Retro Games Can Be Purchased Outside of Subscription

This is a minor one, but it does also matter: if you want to play The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker on the Switch 2, you’ll need to be subscribed to Nintendo Switch Online. But credit where credit’s due, if you want to play Ape Escape or Dino Crisis on the PS5, you can purchase a digital copy outright.
Some would argue Nintendo has a stronger back catalogue than Sony, with more desirable retro software than you can obtain through PS Plus Premium. It’s also cheaper to sign up to the Switch’s membership than PlayStation’s top tier (although Sony offers a lot more for the price).
But this doesn’t change the fact that the likes of Resident Evil: Director’s Cut, Sly Cooper, and Everybody’s Golf can all be purchased separately. Many of these games feature full Trophy lists, too, which makes revisiting them from a modern perspective much more compelling.
Sony’s far from perfect, and there’s plenty of poor moves it’s made over the course of the generation. We suspect commenters will be eager to point to the PS5 Pro’s $699 price point, and the frequent price increases the platform holder has implemented.
We’ll continue to hold the company accountable for its more questionable moves, make no mistake of that. But sometimes it’s worth acknowledging the good things, and to that end, PS5 does have some more agreeable elements that are worth celebrating in comparison to the Switch 2 at this moment in time.

More of a case of lesser of two evils. Im not into Nintendo myself but as long as they dont chase the live service dragon they'll always have that in their favour.
One of the things I feel people rarely acknowledge is that Sony have on three occasions recently given major DLC expansions for free. Legends mode for Ghost of Tsushima, Ascension for Returnal and Valhalla for God of War. Those were all pretty substantial updates, better than most paid dlcs these days.
You very rarely see any major publisher give updates like this out for free.
I'm getting a Switch 2 day 1 hopefully but jesus christ talk about one upping Sony and MS in being ant-consumer.
I do very much get fed up of people online stating discs have no data on them and you're just using it as an unlock to download a game. Why are so many people thinking that's the truth?
I've seen it here, and I've seen it elsewhere a LOT like on Facebook.
PS5 has a welcome game that's free, PS5 also has a reward system for playing games whereas Nintendo just got rid of their gold system. Dualsense is cheaper than the new Switch 2 Pro controller. Games are cheaper but also have more discounts throughout the year.
But there's benefits with Nintendo, more exclusives and at a decent release rate. Cheaper online subscription, better customer support, can play games handheld and on TV both natively, cheaper to expand storage.
There's pros and cons to both systems, it's just down to what people see as necessary and things they can live without.
Something also to note is that Sony still has it's legacy storefronts available, while both Microsoft and Nintendo have abandoned them.
Sony became a lot better from the consumer point of view in the PS4 era.
PS5 though, and the PS3-eque attitude reared up again. And on simple things as well, such as if PS4 saves can be backed up on a USB stick, why not the PS5 saves? Simple, more money from a PS subscription.
@ChrisDeku Blows my mind Valhalla was free as they could off easily charged £15 for that and we would have happily paid it.
"Nintendo is introducing a new model with the Switch 2 named Game Key Cards, which allows developers to offer a physical product, but it’s one you’ll need to download."
Doesn't affect me in any way (I hardly ever replay games I've already completed) but yikes!
One things for sure.playstation always have a sale.nintendo is notorious for keeping the same price for a very long time Word up son

Im still getting a switch 2 day one as my secondary console, im just gonna rent games from gamefly cuz im not paying 80-90 dollars
And this is why when I see discourse around Sony, I roll my eyes.
Edit: I completely agree with the up grades section, they get so much stick for them, but every one I've personally played have been with the price tag, whether that's £10 or £40.
@BecauseBecause Like Sammy suggests in the article, I think it's just a handful of examples that colour the whole conversation.
Game discs having no data on them whatsoever do exist, but they're definitely in the minority (for now). A lot of people see the headlines and then they just assume it's the new norm (which it isn't... for now!).
Basically charging for the use of a physical button? Imagine Sony locking the create button behind PS Plus, they would be relentlessly mocked for 101 years.

@Randinator123 I'll get one but not till end of the year. It seems like a really solid console so far. A very good upgrade over the original Switch idea. Just have to stick to Amazon discounts or second hand games. IMO it's a lot better then the PC handhelds, I've got a Steam Deck OLED and it's pretty underpowered for modern games now, Switch 2 will replace it I hope, maybe I'll get a Steam Deck 2 if they make one but it needs to be MUCH more powerful. Then again it may be best to just get PS6 when it's out.
The whole presentation and pricing put me off buying a Switch 2 for quite some time! Yikes!
@UltimateOtaku91 Oh dear God they didn't... why should Xbox fans worry I mean most of their games will probably end up on the Switch 2 anyway...
This site has taken a weird turn this week. Nintendo has always done things that were less consumer friendly and/or obtuse, and Push Square had never devoted like a dozen articles to it in 3 days. Nintendo is going to do what it’s going to do, and if you want to play Mario, Mario Kart, Zelda, Smash, or Pokémon, you’re going to deal with their BS. But to act like there’s an air of superiority from Sony with its own history of high priced consoles and peripherals is a bit of a stretch - especially when GTA 6 launches at like $100 and we’ll all pay it.
I am still thinking of getting Nintendo Switch 2 as my secondary console if I can manage to get a discount on it. As for the games, I just play the Legend of Zelda, 2D and 3D Mario platformers, and Bayonetta. If there are, let us say, alternative ways to get their games for discounted prices like what happened with the year 1 original Nintendo Switch, I will do that if you know what I mean as just a reaction to their greed.
@S1ayeR74 Christ what is with the sudden insecurity of this site??? A massive influx of articles of how 'PS5 is better than Switch 2' is INCREDIBLY fanboy ish and quite sad and pathetic. You lot come across as feeling rrreeeeaaaaallllllyy threatened by it. And as for consumer friendly? I put Sony and Nintendo BOTH in the same boat on that topic, Valve and Microsoft embarrass both companies when it comes to that topic.
Well you said what i was going to say nearly word for word so my work is done here. I would only like to add this website takes Jab after Jab at Xbox. Then turns around and writes a million switch 2 articles. It’s as if they don’t want to talk about the Last of Us remastered 4 times and Day’s Gone remaster. Oh wait they don’t cause Sony is giving next to nothing lately to talk about outside of they sold and shipped over 75 million units. I used to love this site, but it’s been cringe lately.
Console market is about to get really expensive with only the PS6 and the Switch 2 being the viable options amidst Xbox’ suicide.
I’m fully expecting Sony to follow suit on everything anti-consumer Nintendo came up with this week, no need to keep flaming users with these articles.
It's been a bit disappointing to see so many articles stirring the console war flames on this site in recent days. Generally speaking, a site gets the community it caters to and deserves, and with the tone of recent articles, that doesn't bode well for future comment sections.
We all love video games, don't we? Can't we all just enjoy them in peace?
I'll say similar to what I said on the Pure Xbox version of this one..
"Great, I'll play the new Mario Kart on PS5 then"

@IOI Sony and Nintendo are battling each other with the anti consumer practices. Only gamers can push back. Look at when Sony went to PC thinking they would all just make PSN accounts. That didn’t last long. Cause the PC market is more mature and will simply say no and not do what they want. Sony bent the knee quickly. But on the console side gamers complain but not force change. Xbox will look really good next gen with more store fronts, nice blend of open PC options but a little bit of closed options to still make it plug and play console. It’s sounding better and better. While it won’t outsell the other 2, is that really the point in video games is to only care what sales more? I am not saying you are saying that but many take that idea and run with it and then wonder why they sit in that boat.
Also, how about stop dunking on the Switch 2 for a day and actually inform about PS5-related stuff like the last TLOU 2 update breaking progression for the roguelike mode…

Thanks for launching Astro Bot at $60 Sony. Fantastic game.
@HonestHick luckily PX is being just as cringe for you this week!
@Ainu20 Thank you for saying that. Video games have become the most toxic hobby i have. No one is ever happy and god forbid you like a console or PC over the other one. They bully you into thinking you are an idiot for having choice and different tastes for products in the same industry. This site i think is having a hard time convincing people PS5 is all that great this gen with more cancellations than releases and remasters for games that don’t need remastered. It’s gotten so bad and it’s a shame cause this industry is about fun and excitement. If this is the attitude and attention it get’s from the fans how do these people survive in the real world with a mean Boss or teacher? I’d pay to see that HAHA
@PsBoxSwitchOwner they had a few Switch 2 articles, one saying Switch 2 did Xbox one moves and i ripped into that too. That couldn’t be further from the truth. Sure there is some comparisons. But still. So for the record i ripped into that. I don’t play favorites.
Nintendo have always been kind of dodgy in this way. They tend to get away with it. Like BotW has pay-to-win in the sense food, weapons and arrows etc are limited resources but you can just get them daily with an amiibo. You can pay for the best horse. Pay for a wolf companion who fights for you. Pay for armour that detects korok seeds for you (with no normal way of detecting them). The remaster of Twilight Princess has only one truly new thing, an extra dungeon. And that was locked behind the Wolf Link amiibo. Oh, and the wolf bodyguard I mentioned before? He has levels and you can only level him up by also buying TP and playing through that dungeon I mentioned.
I said they get away with it. Well they do in America (and Japan, though it seems they're still more besotted with mobile gacha) but internationally they're still seen as more of a kids' toy manufacturer. I know that's contentious online (where there are lots of Americans) but IRL it's just a given. I think most parents aren't aware of the aforementioned stuff or just think of it as typical cash grab stuff that kids' products do all the time.
Sony does anything slightly wrong, gamers kill them. Other companies don't receive nearly the same criticisms.
@HonestHick I love consoles but PC is sounding like the logical step for next generation, however I really, really dislike Windows and SteamOS still isn’t compatible with many games, if the next Xbox does indeed have Steam I’d get it and get all my games from there, but I honestly doubt Microsoft to actually deliver on that, and I wouldn’t buy anything at all from the MS Store anymore so I’m just waiting to see how next-gen shapes up, for now I’ll just keep my 3 consoles (and get the Switch 2 bundle whenever possible).
Well what’s this.
The sell preservation society
On here now.
I actually think its a good article - Sony has been given a lot of flak for some of its policies, some deserved (PS plus for game save backup), some definitely not (I still think the £10 remaster charge is a good price given the extra work they usually put in).
It will be interesting to see if that same level of outrage will now be leveled at Nintendo.
However, I think the real point here, is if it is not, and the media gives Nintendo a 'pass' for some of this (or we don't get articles like this), will Sony look at some of this and go 'well it didn't cause an outrage when Nintendo did it, so we will do it too'!
At least with Mario kart world and Donkey Kong Bananza
Nintendo believe in generations
Now what company said that and some of those on here that had an outcry when it didn’t happen with god of war and horizon forbidden west.
Those were the days 🤣🤣🤣
This isn’t much of a victory.
@UltimateOtaku91 I take it you havent seen the price of Micro SD Express cards 😀

I think Nintendo’s higher prices on games are structured so it can now do more frequent sales and possibly lower prices as a title ages. Everyone knows that their first party titles (almost) never go on sale. Maybe this is changing to align with PS, XB, Steam, Epic, etc by having a lot of frequent sales.
Agreed with all of this. Most publicly-traded companies get greedy as they perform better, and Nintendo has shown they’re getting greedier than other companies in many ways with the Switch 2.
I will say, there are some pro-consumer moves. All old controllers will work on the new system, so there’s no need to spend $200+ on a set of 4. There’s also a lot of “free” content for users who already have the online plan. And the system, while not cheap, is fairly priced given the competition of other handheld devices like the Steam Deck and RoG Ally. Remember, you do get everything you need to plug it into your tv/monitor, plus a controller for TV use.
That being said, it still isn’t cheap. It’ll surely price a lot of people out, and I’m curious how they’ll make things cheaper when generation 10 Pokemon releases. It’ll be hard for young kids to convince their parents to get them an $450 console before tax. And that $80 price tag for Mario Kart is ridiculous, imo. And making the tech demo PAID is a literal joke.
In short, both companies do things a bit better than others. I’d argue PS5 is a bit better with this at the moment. But it’s also been out for 4 and a half years, and inflation has only gotten worse.
It’s lame but I’m still kinda thankful considering games used to be like $60-$80 back in the 90’s, which would be about $110-$155 today. So prices are high… but still somewhat affordable, for me personally. I’ll just be way more selective on which games I get and wait for certain titles to drop in price. Still love my PS5 and I’m looking forward to the Switch 2.
@Jrs1 No I haven't, now I'm scared to 😂

I might be the only person who actually likes the Game Key Card thing. Thing is developers that opted for this would've released codes in a box otherwise. Being able to re-sell digital games is actually a massive benefit compared to traditional digital distribution.
Just a reminder you are defending a company that charges £700 for a PS5 Pro that does not even come with a stand or a disc drive.
Looks like the Switch 2 is going to become even more expensive in the US, this will make the PS5 look more lucrative.
https://www.nintendolife.com/news/2025/04/nintendo-delays-switch-2-pre-orders-in-the-us-amidst-new-trump-tariffs#comments
@frankmcma you really think Nintendo is making their games cost more at launch so they can be intentionally put on sale? 1st party nintendo games rarely go on sale for more than 30% off
Removed - discussing moderation
@SMJ I mean, the article literally says Sony aren't perfect, It's funny that it is always Sony fans that have no awareness, so does that mean the other two are good as gold, food for thought?
It blows my mind how gamers just refuse to own all console brands. never seen a demographic of people that like a particular hobby shackle themselves so much.
@HonestHick I meant it more sarcastically because PX is full of stupid switch articles too.
But console wars are (sadly) the only thing that drives traffic on PX. - and here we all are driving it on here too!
@Oram77 Sony is as bad as Nintendo IMO, pricing may be different in some areas, but not in others. However Sony force you to accept to lose your rights to a refund as soon as you download a digital game, and Nintendo don’t give one either.
Yet both Microsoft and Valve have NO problem with it, they just have a set criteria like limited play time before you ask for one, and a time limit you can ask for a refund in like 2 weeks from purchase.
I am sure it isn’t a coincidence two are American companies and the other two Japanese ones.
SOME of these are fair criticisms. But a few aren't quite the full story.
I guess all those worried about money and rightfully so, go speak to President DT over in the USA 🇺🇸 because other items etc will go up as well like that have been and more now probably.
Take the UK business national insurance has just gone up so businesses have to pay more national insure per employee.
You think none of that will get passed on to us the public.
Sony does what Nintendon't ?
@BecauseBecause Because people are dumb and believe what they see Random Internet Guy say.
Or they see the “downloading” when a game is installed from discs on their PS5 and think “iT MuSt Be fROm dA iNtErWEbZ!!!”
Either way, it’s very aggravating that these doofuses keep regurgitating the same line over and over again.
@OldGamer999 cough Metroid Prime 4 cough
Yeah, Nintendo totally believes in generations wholeheartedly.
Both, both do their best to be anti-consumer. Anything they can get away with to make the numbers go up up up.
@dskatter
Thought someone may say Metroid prime a game that’s has been in development for the Switch for four years.
Not the same as HFW or GOW. That’s was originally meant to be PS5 as Sony said we believe in generations as a marketing stunt to get at Xbox.
And now a word from our sponsor
Highlighting party chat as a feature, that isn’t even free, in 2025 when the competing brands have had free chat features for almost 2 decades, and much better at that, is hilarious.
@OldGamer999 Oh, MP4 has been in development for darn near the entire time the Switch has existed. I’m still shocked (and pleased!) that we’re finally getting it and I’ll absolutely have it on my hopefully-preordered Switch 2!
I just felt the need to toss that in there for full clarity! After all, we also got BotW on Wii U and Switch during the Switch launch. It’s like Nintendo is legally required to release at least one cross-gen title per launch for some reason…
Is there such a thing as a pro-consumer corporation to begin with?
I'm also wondering where all those commenters here who said they were ditching PlayStation for Nintendo because of the PS5 Pro are and how they feel about these recent happenings.
I find it really hard to see the current Switch as a console. I use it for travel and not much else. I know it is a console but I've only ever used it as a handheld. I like Nintendo for it's nostalgic games roster but rarely buy any of their games. Sony seem to always have some kind of sale on, those sale prices are more representative of what we probably should be paying for a game in the first place.
Either my timing is bad or Nintendo don't seem to offer sales/discounts half as much. I don't know if it's true but someone just told me the Switch 2 pre-orders are going to be delayed in the USA, I'm cautious with most internet chatter. I still don't even know what the full specs are of the Switch 2 so I can't really compare it at all, there's a lot of speculation.
The laugh is, even with all the backlash - and the power to do something about it in our very own hands (ie NOT buying it), people will still end up making a purchase. Think it's a cultural thing, as both Japanese companies (Nintendo & Sony) and the most anti consumer you can get. But Nintendo has always been about the money - they will reskin a game as many times as they can and resell to make another dollar.
If it had free cloud saves, that would have been better. But no free cloud saves.
And also sucks that both platforms require subscription to play online.
PC has free online play and cloud saves, so PC is more consumer friendly.
@IOI couldn’t agree more. I am building my PC now, first ever by the way, so exciting and scary all at the same time you know? Haha but i too am not a big fan of windows. Been using Mac for over 15 years now. But the next Xbox has a lot to get right but if they do, it could be a killer machine for the more hardcore gamer market. The funny thing is i actually like my PS5, I didn’t like PS4 all that much and PS3 was a train wreck with a few good games. The only thing stopping me from playing my PS5 is the same problem since PS1, Sony has the worst controllers ever for my play style and desire of comfort. I like everything else about the PS5 minus no killer games from Sony yet. Switch 2 like i said i will get it at some point. It pairs nicely with a PC. That combo plays everything. Good luck in what you decide for the future, as long as you are happy and having fun you made the right choice.
If you’re a Sony fan best be prepared if you’re living in America… Nintendo have delayed pre-orders in the US only to ‘review pricing’ because of the tariffs. So it could go UP in price there, and if the Switch 2 goes up I bet anything so will the PS5 go up. Imagine a PS5 Pro costing 800 base! Or even 900!
@CutchuSlow Sony doesn’t have free cloud saves. Neither does Nintendo.
@SMJ Thank you friend. Think about it in 5 years this generation has now seen 2 price hikes to software. Sony came into 9th gen with $70 and now Nintendo enters 9th with some titles being $70 or $80. It’s been a wild ride to say the least.
@HonestHick All I will say here is I am glad you agree, I agree too. Think that should be safe..
@dskatter
Cross generation is ok to a point.
But glad MKW and DKB are switch 2 only.
Nintendo know how to play this game they been at it for decades.
@dskatter
Correct but Nintendo if you are part of a family gives cloud saves to the family group upto 8 family members. But of course you pay.
Sony you have to all have your own PSN subscription to have cloud saves even family members.
Xbox is the free and best cloud saves
Nintendo second
Sony third and really creaming the money.
@PsBoxSwitchOwner every website is pushed by fanboy articles it seems. Tells me the games aren’t as good as they are being reviewed or they just like stirring the pot. Likely it’s a bit of both. But it hurts the industry as whole. Story time but a good lesson i learnt as a young adult. Hope it helps.
When i got out of high school my first job was selling cars (hard Job) and the area had 3 car dealerships all on the same street. In certain cities that is popular to see. On days we were slow making no money as it was 100% commission we would all say look at that other dealership they have customers today and my boss would always tell us its not a bad thing that they have customers cause that means people are in the market for new vehicles and in time will come to look at ours, just be ready. He was more upset if no one was looking to buy anywhere. Point of this is the video game market is so not like this. If Xbox is not going well, all you see is they should leave the market, instead of hey they should try to win back marketshare, same with the Wii U, Nintendo should put all their games on PS and Xbox, etc etc etc. gamers should be happy to have choice and happy to see other platforms doing well. It don’t hurt to say someting nice about people and products, in the end it could be what brings better things to you.
Sammy forgot to mention another positive note about Sony Retro games for PS5 (and PS4):
If you bought PS1 & PS2 classic from PS3/PSP/Vita store and digital PSP games then you can play those games again, the select ones that got released for PS4 & PS5, for free
I bought Wild Arms 1 & 2, Legend of Dragoon, Syphon Filter 1, Grandia 1, Killzone Liberation, Dino Crisis 1, RE Directors Cut, and Twisted Metal 1 from PS3 store like eons ago. So it's nice to replay these classics on my PS4/5 without rebuying them again. Not to mention some of the classics has trophies and pretty good QoL like save everywhere, rewind feature, multiple resolutions and filters. Hopefully Sony will release more classics PS1 & PS2 and PSP games.
Anyway. This is an informative article and a reminder that Sony did some good decisions.
sony games will always come down in price. nintendo games do not even years later..
Nintendo is very fair with its controller policy: I’ll can use my existing Pro controller and four Joy-Cons with Switch 2. For Mario Kart, Mario Party etc. this is perfect. And it already was back in the day with Wii and Wii U.
Sony doesn‘t allow to use DualShocks with PS5 games. And for Fifa etc. this would be more than enough for most of us!
@OldGamer999 'At least with Mario kart world and Donkey Kong Bananza
Nintendo believe in generations'
Are you for real? This Mario Kart number 9 and I've lost count of how many DK in another platformer this is.
I expect them to both be good games, but they are just another iterative n of what they always serve up.....
Where's the new Nintendo software showing the capabilities of its new generation? Nowhere... Unless you count game chat hidden behind a sub.
"Retro Games Can Be Purchased Outside of Subscription"
Wrong , we cant buy and Play the OG God of War , Killzone , Resistance , Infamous games
I Would say Sony isn't Afraid of Giving away Free Games Nintendo mean while has never heard of the word.
@gjronin They didn't mean ALL retro Playstation games, they mean the actual games released that are emulated and included in PS Premium, not the streaming only titles. Those titles haven't been ported yet afaik.
My daughter loves the switch and shes already put her order in with me for Xmas, I dont mind paying the 400 for the console, 90 quid for one game is ridiculous, she normally gets a couple of games for her birthday , but I'm afraid that'll have to stop.
You forgot the part where PS4 controllers don't work on PS5 games and they bumped up prices between their generations as well.
But I'm not going to sit here and argue which is less ***** than the other, when the only question that matters is if this product, game or whatever represents value to you
The prices would be easier to take if Nintendo games were discounted sooner. In many cases standard prices never goes down. It's kind of insane to pay full price for a 5 year old game. I usually get them on woot for $20 off.
@Titntin
I’m only having a bit of mediocre on this.
Actually it’s more about the three big boys and all the PR they come out with then U turn a bit and change things.
All in the name of sales and money 🤣
@Titntin
I will say though with DKB I’ve not world seen destruction and uses like that in a Nintendo game before not to that level and graphics.
As for MKW it’s just an evolution , I’m not sure what they could have done after the success of MK8.
Nintendo have always been greedy when it comes to pricing
@OldGamer999 All said and done, I'm still likely to pick one up by end of year, but hopefully Nintendo will have released a couple of other 'must have' titles by then. Playing cyberpunk at 720p @ 30fps with dips is not what I'm after 😀.
Meantime I still need my second ps5 pro and I'm not made of cash!
@Titntin
For me Nintendo consoles are always about Nintendo studios AAA not really third party, the Pro is best for that now.
Did I preorder a switch 2 yep, MK edition from Smyths toys delivery 5th of June and a switch 2 pro controller, why? I just can’t resist and I do like MK especially online racing and DKB looks good as well, also wind waker from the GameCube thing.
Definitely won’t be playing cyberpunk on switch 2. 🤣
@UltimateOtaku91 Nintendo are usually good at the file compression, youll be alright for a while 😀👍
the "C" button stands for creditcard
Like in the "For starters..." part you wrote chat as it might be pronounced in the home counties of England
Retro games being purchasable is a huuuge plus
Whos say is not perfect? The nintendofanboys dumbs?! Why those fanboys dont understand one thing: switch nedd change hes name to: "MARIOSWITCH!" IS the most crap console of all times. And im not a famboy of sonys. I care only with the games. Because is than that i play! Games! Not consoles. But hey nintendo only make marios and zeldas etc games
@HonestHick
Or the PS5 VRR stutter issues that Digital Foundry has confirmed this week. Any articles on that, rather than more why "we are better than Nintendo" ones...
@Ooccoo_Jr
Or it's own screen for that matter lol. I mean that's what's going on right, comparing PS5 to the Switch 2.
Removed - trolling/baiting
It’s not that sony is better, it’s just nintendo is worse. Why nearly every successful console usually followed by bad decisions after bad decisions 😕
I feel like the Switch's success has allowed Nintendo to become kinda cocky
The Wii U humbled them
To be fair, the online expansion pass gets you the upgrades for free - something PS Plus Premium is scared to go anywhere near. That Zelda app seems fantastic - RDR2 had a similar thing that moved in real time with you until Rockstar abandoned it.
Also - considering the parent company I’m surprised m/impressed this article was even allowed to be published! Unless you’re about to quit Sammy and wanna burn it down on your way out 🤣
Nintendo has always been anti-consumer; they just get away with it more because they're Nintendo, everyone's favorite childhood gaming company.
@HonestHick What a brilliant comment bud, you've restored a bit of my faith in America 👍
Removed - unconstructive feedback
Fair article but i never want to hear about the pro price again especially when it offers way more than a switch 2 for only 250 more nvm the fact it’s crazy a switch 2 cost the same as a base ps5 while being nowhere comparable in power
@eltomo you Nintendo fans have had a rough couple days it’s understandable lol
@GeeForce quit crying nothing about the article was a lie you don’t need to go to bat for a gaming company who doesn’t care about you
@S1ayeR74 I’m pretty sure there’s a 14-day window to get refunds for digital PS games, unless they’ve changed it for ps5 games
@Ooccoo_Jr yeah and for people who like tech 700 for a pro is absolutely fair especially when thats only 250 more than a freaking switch 2 lol
@themightyant who the hell is buying fortnite from somebody lmao. Idk if many people have bothered buying those dumb bundles that come with the in-game currencies and skins
@OldGamer999 both HFW and GOWR were also in development long before the PS5 was announced. I don’t think them releasing after the console dropped is really much of a point to make
@HonestHick only thing cringe is your comment holy crap it’s not that serious. Sony brings its customers plenty between third parties and their own studios. Sony is bringing DS 2,GOY and a heavily rumored GOW Miles Morales like game this year alone and that’s just what we know so far plus MLB the Show which just had one of its best iterations in years
@OldGamer999 and now that I think about it, that’s literally the case here for MP4 as well
@dark_knightmare2 so 2 games which is good, tho one isn’t made by their internal teams, the other is a yearly sports title with a fresh of the roster and a rumor. I mean hey if that floats your boat that is all that matters. Happy gaming and all.
Two wrongs don't make a right.
And make no mistake, Sony will follow suit, unless this blows up on Nintendo's face.
With that said, Sony is already learning with how the PS5Pro is selling less than the PS4Pro.
@Jrs1 i really appreciate that! Thank you. There is always reason to have faith in the Red White and Blue. For that matter there is always reason to have faith in most places as it’s the love you have for your country and one another that matters way more than fake media rants over things they know is a lie. Thats never and will never be the true representation of the people.
@GeeForce yeah the VRR on PS sucks and has since i bought it in 2021. I have a LG Oled that does 144hz and the Xbox’s VRR runs circles around PS5. But i rarely comment on it cause most people aren’t mature enough to handle any form of criticism of their plastic box of choice. The PS5 Pro at that price should be running WAAAY better than it does. Tho recent Assassin’s creed did start to show some promise. The Nintendo articles will die down soon and it will be back to what Xbox games are PS fans getting.
Good list, especially group chat and PS4 to ps5 upgrades have been handled better.
Apples and bananas. This is like comparing a good pair of sneakers to snow skis.
One money sucking gaming company is better than the other money sucking gaming company. LOL
Old school PS games not being tied to a subscription service and backwards compatibility in general is better on PS5.
Cope and seethe, PS staff, lol. 😂
@UltimateOtaku91 All of this basically, there's always pros and cons.
That said, I will be boycotting/protesting the Nintendo Switch 2 console for 3-4 years at the very least.
I also refuse to pay for $80+ Switch 2 games, that's just plain corporate greed in my opinion.
For starters, they actually address the public on serious issues. Doesn't mean every issue gets fixed perfectly, but they at least try with several.
"Want us to keep the older digital stores up? Alright. Horizon 2 was supposed to be crossbuy? Say less. PC players hate the mandatory PSN in Helldivers 2... Well, we tried to warn you and that's more on the devs for letting you all in, but fine, we'll work on that for the next year-- wait, ALL ports!? Also we won't shut down your tournaments. In fact, we own EVO now and we'll even have some scheduled online tournaments of our own. Here's some free DLC, avatars, oh, and some free games during Covid. Will the $10 upgrade path work for that copy of Horizon we gave you for free? Absolutely! PSN was down because of us? Here's some compensation. (Previously)Hacked terribly on our watch? Here's even crazier compensations and multiple public apologies"
"Oh yeah, we may have nudged some devs out there into bringing back or localizing some highly requested series previously found on our platform. ...what do you mean our -own- classics? Fine... we'll get someone on it."
Also VERY important:
If you've owned some of those digital PS classics WAY in the past(like PS3 era), you just flat out get them for free now. That's MAJOR. Had Nintendo kept their stores up, they could have done the same. Would they? Hell no.
@HonestHick "I used to love this site, but it’s been cringe lately." It's been this way for a couple of years now at least. I used to really like the articles and reviews but now the reviews are mostly a rough guide line for me and don't always to appear to have been reviewed by somebody who understands the genre the game is representing. I'm here mostly for the interaction with you guys and a fair few of you are now on my psn friends list and have messaged me through psn to discuss things that are not allowed here because it upsets certain sentiments or just calls out PS on their apparant double standards. They don't even have the grace to reply to any email you send even though they provide that option for feed back etc which to me is just plain ignorance. If it wasn't for the interaction I get to have with the community here I would have put PS on the ignore and forget list a long, long time ago. This is actually constructive criticism PS.
@Northern_munkey i agree with you 100%. You and i whether we agree on something or disagree are the reason i come here as well. Along with many others. Cause agreeing makes the experience that much more fun to share and disagreeing is good for seeing things from a different angle and learning how others view things. I come here for that too and to remind PS to make off set thumb sticks but i digress HAHA. I just don’t get the end goal they are doing here, slightly bashing the competition, not being honest with Sony’s up’s and downs. Telling people disc’s have 20 years or less until they rot, which to me was a total article trying to prefer for a disc less PS future. Just odd the choices they have chosen to me. I don’t trust to many sites or YouTubers for reviews these days. I am down to like maybe 2 and even those it’s only a strong guideline. Years ago reviews were important to me and more times than not right on the money. Let’s hope instead of them taking our comments down they listen and make the site more fun and entertaining even interactive. Instead of this. As always buddy i truly appreciate your time and friendship here at Push, i always look forward to your posts, idea’s input etc. thanks for being part of the fun! 😀
@QBertFarnsworth agreed. especially when you consider the fact the ps5 is sony's most underwhelming console generation by a wide margin. it's not even up for debate if we're talking sony's 1st party output and what they have brought (or didn't bring) to the table...
Just when I thought they couldn't out anti-consumer Sony, Nintendo comes in like....
@HonestHick and you too...fish on..
@Northern_munkey i might fish Sunday morning if i can. Weather here has been a mess so the rivers and lakes are likely flooded. But i sure would like to try! 🎣
I’m not there yet but the increasing prices of console gaming makes the PC, and by extension handhelds like the Steamdeck seem like the future.
You have a back catalogue of decades of releases, multiple storefronts, can store away your digital purchases, hoard free giveaways and emulate anything else.
@Matroska pay-to-win in BotW? What are you talking about? It’s a single player game for a start. Hey Ratchet & Clank had pre-order exclusive weapons, so I guess you had to pay-to-win there as you couldn’t wait for a sale? Ridiculous statement!
Also food and weapons are not limited resources. Not even remotely. It all respawns in an in-game day or two, which can be skipped ahead too with no negatives by making or finding a campfire and resting at them.
All that armour is optional and also part of the non-amiibo DLC. None of it is necessary, most of it is just throw-back armour with no extra functionality. None of it is pay-to-win. You say no way to detect Korok seeds? Except, you know, spotting all the puzzles and out-of-place items as is the intended gameplay. You talk like you can’t get Koroks without the amiibo mask and that’s simply not true it just makes them easier to spot.
Look Nintendo aren’t perfect but there’s no need to just lie about stuff? It just devalues any actual credible criticisms.
And I will say the wolf is probably a more credible one. You can’t get it any other way and levelling it in a different game is sucky. But you don’t need it. Not even remotely. It’s certainly not a pay-to-win level item, again it’s a single player game, and it’s it not like there’s not a bunch of other games on PlayStation that don’t sell armour and weapon packs etc.
@BecauseBecause I agree. Plus the benefit of being able to sell them on or give to friends once you’re done.
@Dudeitsme Certainly, I only keep maybe 5% of the games I buy, most games I don't tend to replay them, so I sell them on and get some of my money back or trade for credit at Cex.
Game Key Cards is the worst thing I've ever seen in my life. It's like release freak out of leash. On console heavily based on portable feature, and so, used there where is low or no internet, this is straight against purpose of this machine. And second, more evil thing, this gives free hand for developers to release unfinished products. It also brings back old annoying problem with storage management, where you constantly delete and reinstall (additionally redownload) games. This whole thing is huge step back and it's another nail in Switch 2 coffin.
"But when Sony charged $10, it's offered full-bown remasters" is quite simply not true. A lot for the remakes are sold as separate units entirely (Last of Us Part 1, HZD), and the examples you're listing are on par with what Nintendo are offering ($10 for framerate/resolution bump and new features).
Those Game Key carts are basically an evolution (and improvement) over the "code in the box" releases that came with a download code in the box. Now you can lend the carts to your friends and even resell it later (or at least that's what I understood).
The upgrades on the other hand seem pretty fair to me. I think those two Zelda upgrades are 10€, and not only offer substantial graphical improvements but new features as well.
One area where PS5 shines is Astro's Playroom. Great freebie that comes with the console. Nintendo doesn't have anything like that (although they do offer "free" games with the online subscription).
I own a switch oled and have probably spent more time playing it than my playstation
That said some of Nintendos practices are infuriating.
Switch online is terrible value and they have make consumers pay for the same games on multiple systems and then tell you it's now only available to rent.
I'll probably get a switch 2 eventually and was on the fence about buying day 1 but the prices have persuaded me to hold off for now.
While the system and games look good there was nothing about the software or hardware that made me think I must have this immediately.
Maybe I'll jump onboard when an oled model comes out and software is regularly discounted.
I definitely appreciate being able to buy individual games on ps5 vs the subscription only Nintendo option.
@OldGamer999 Yeah they're such staunch believers in generations that the two best games for Switch 2 at launch will be a Switch 1 launch title (BotW) and its sequel.
@MrPeanutbutterz
Very true but it’s very hard for any game on any console in the world to beat a game.
BOTW 97 METACRITIC SCORE.
Mmmmmm the PS5 been out four years a no Sony studio game beat that.
And many other Nintendo games to come to think about it.
Honestly the whole concept of what the Switch 2 is going after just isn't very appealing to me right now. Biggest problem is the simple fact of how the handheld gaming scene has changed significantly since the original Switch was introduced. Back then it was basically the most sophisticated handheld gaming option, but over the years we have seen the rise of the Steam Deck and many PC gaming handhelds and now the Switch 2 honestly struggles to look in any way impressive when compared to what's already out there. That and I simply don't play games on the go like I used to. It's exclusives are the only thing that could get me to buy one right now and the few it's got just aren't the type of thing I feel like I just have to play right away.
So as I've had a Steam Deck for many years I've got it loaded up with lots of games, many well beyond what the Switch was capable of playing, and the prospect of buying games I already got on consoles or PC just to play them on Nintendo's latest handheld simply isn't appealing to me, especially if they're going to be charging full price for them or worse yet the crazy prices Nintendo is trying to charge for games like the new Mario Kart. As a home console it's simply got nothing to offer over the Series X and PS5 I already got.
@Vriess This is such a fanboyish article. It read like an ad for the PS5. Is Push Square getting a kickback for this or something?
On the last point, Sony for at least some of the classics has honored your previous purchase from back in the PS3/PSP/Vita era & made the new PS4|5 version free, I got Killzone Liberation, Tekken 5 and Wild Arms for free, but not Medievil 1 or Twisted Metal 1. It would be nice to know what they're criteria is sure, but I'm not complaining as a bunch of those I had gotten free through PS+ or as Big Hack compensation in the first place.
One point I don't see being mentioned is that one of the reasons Nintendo don't reduce the cost of their games is they are generally complete on release and don't rely on mtx to make up profits. All their love service bs is reserved for mobile devices and funds single player games. You may not like the genres they aim for or the fact they iterate on the same IPS but a LOT of people do. I don't want the next mario kart to sell out and offer 6 thousand different pieces of outfit for individual prices just to save £10 on the purchase. But neither do I begrudge that some companies do have to do things that way to make the games they want to make. We can't have our cakes and eat them. The extra development costs have to come from somewhere
“ But when Sony’s charged $10 for upgrades, it’s offered full-blown remasters.”
So we’re just going to completely ignore that Sony was also doing the same $10 upgrade for next generation games like God of War and GT7.. and other title?
It wasn’t always offered full-blown remasters.
Microsoft is the only who didn’t screw anyone over with Xbox One to Series X
I like how you guys delete comments that call you out. You guys are so sad.
"Retro Games Can Be Purchased Outside of Subscription"
I will never pay of subscription fee for GameCube games. I want to buy them individually and own them so I can still play them after the service inevitably shuts down. The fact that I don't have that choice makes no sense at all.
@Kierant202 Yeah. But there's really no reason we can't have some Nintendo Selects at this point. Switch is going on 10 years old. Some of those games really should be discounted.
Game Key Cards is AWFUL I was hoping Nintendo would keep Physical alive but it seems not What a sad time it is
@DennisReynolds "I'm getting a Switch 2 day 1 hopefully but jesus christ talk about one upping Sony and MS in being ant-consumer."
This is likely the exact reason the whole lot of them don't care. At some point fomo has to take a back seat to principle no matter the issue.
@KundaliniRising333 Dude its video games a luxury and hobby its really not that important. Sorry but i don't have much in the way of principles when it comes to entertainment products. As long as i'm having fun and enjoying myself i'm happy.
1) Party Chat - No friends no problem!
2) Upgrades - Doesn’t affect anything I’ve bought on Switch or plan to.
3) Full games on disk - I’m digital only now and do you not need to spend £100 for a PS5 drive?
4) Cheaper Software - I’ve got a few bargains on both PS4 and Switch. PlayStation used to do great sales but that’s not been the case for a while now.
5) Retro games - N64 and GameCube are the main draw and I’d have a sub anyway. Older systems are free on Switch.
Still torn on buying either a PS5, Switch 2 or waiting till PS6.
Most consumer friendly Xbox > PlayStation > Nintendo
Literally grasping straws here. 💀😂
@wildcat_kickz You can still buy a game on the PS3 store, which launched in 2006. Meanwhile, the Wii Shop has been dead for nearly a decade, and even the 360 store is gone now. That is still shocking to me tbh
1.Fair, not that I care but fair of what services are accessible enough to audiences.
2.I mean what for resolution/frame rate, sometimes a few tweaks. It's still early but some have content additions, others don't. Some PS5 upgrades are time limited too on Ride 4 or sports games. So it varies.
Others yeah updates for free do happen of additional content yes.
3.Jedi Survivor (compression, scale the project, nope they didn't care), Spyro Reignited (whether it was 'later' in other waves I don't know what to believe of it being true or not) would like a word with you they aren't all on the disk.
So some exceptions exist by publisher choice. Third parties on Switch are worse and larger number of examples exist out there no doubt, but it still happens on PS/Xbox platforms still. Ducktales PS3 was 1 month apparently not a disk then was a disk for reasons. Capcom then versus now with the many Switch 1 excuses, 2K, and many others.
Disney's Star Wars bundle of 7+ or so old games repackaged for a code yep.... Versus the 2 game bundles on disk. Yeah it's pretty bad.
4.We all know you get them immediately or wait to get them later once the gen is over so second hand market takes over. It's expected by now. Or just don't buy them and only third party software. I have no issues with that.
I don't care for PS5/Series X and not bothered at all by any 1st or 3rd party to pick them up/play them even with people around me that do care for PS5/Series X first party.
I only pick up the niche Nintendo IPs and neither of the niche on the other 2 because they just disappointed more and more over the years.
Prices as they are vary though, I'm not buying a Switch 2 prices or not the system really doesn't impress of gimmicks, I don't care about HDR/4K dock and all that stuff. Couldn't care less. It's either the mouse pointer is used well or I don't care at all for the gimmick compared to past consoles from either of the 3 companies still going.
I wouldn't normally but for the time they were I went for the niche Nintendo IPs to support them and because I genuinely wanted to play them. Rhythm Heaven will be, Another Code was Emio was. I knew I'd never see them. Cruis'n Blast is just go digital as that won't ever be easy physical again, I assume.
Besides Vita ports from third parties and odd Indies. That's it. I'm not a customer Nintendo could care for, I'm a bonus that jumped on with a few of interest but hardly effects them.
5.Subscription yeah. But then again, if a Deluxe user then yeah good luck with PS3 streaming not even accessible so got a PS3 for that as it is.
Then again the few GameCube games or 3DS ported to Switch 1 happened the rest they went eh were too lazy to so offer them on Switch 2 now.
PS1/PS2/PSP is nice to have though but the licensing, or cheap copies physical if come across them yeah..... that or emulating.... which sounds better then licenses that will never come to PS+ Deluxe/Premium, exactly.
It's a fair service and I'm glad they offer it and I have bought a few sure, but I mean like PS1/PSP/PS2 on PS3/Vita many never came to them digitally so might as well have emulated them because the licenses aren't going anywhere for many titles.
Like Xbox it's limited to what they can do with source code, what publishers care enough to renew licenses/support a series if they even care enough to, like we just have to deal with what is given, or second hand market or emulate it instead.
@Porco I love the performance of the hardware (it still looks like somebody sat on a cake). If you showed my 10 year old self Spiderman 2, his brain would break. The controller is my favorite ever. But as far as producing games I want to play, there’s 2, maybe 3 per year. That’s Wii U level. It obviously has 3rd party support the Wii U didn’t, but so much of it is annualized, ports, or remakes. Because games are so expensive, they play it safe. I miss when they’d gamble a little more, even if it’s small like Journey. Nintendo using PS4 horsepower with DLSS will be able to produce games for less, and thus, more of them.
@QBertFarnsworth agreed. the 1st party offerings are sparse and predictable. this is a problem for those who bought into the ps5 expecting it to live up to the ps4 in that regard. the 3rd party stuff isn't any better... same old sequels to the same old franchises in many cases... to be perfectly honest, i could spend the rest of my life as a gamer digging through the plethora of gems found on ps1, ps2, ps3, psp, nes, snes, n64, gamecube, wii, switch, gba, ds, 3ds etc... these days i spend more time doing exactly that, in addition to the great indie games that continue to fill a niche for "retro" gaming enthusiats. newer isn't necessarily better anymore when it comes to gaming so i'm in no rush to catch up with the latest consoles...
but you're right, it makes sense to keep the budgets smaller as nintendo is doing, rather than continue to fall into a black hole of higher costs and diminishing returns. as far as i know, tears of the kingdom was nintendo's most expensive game to produce at around $150m... sony is investing double that, if not more, for many of its games and they don't even sell a fraction of the copies in most cases. nintendo's software margins must be much, much higher as a result.
I despise playstation now. 50% of ps5 games are remasters of ps4 games you can already play on ps5 with ps4 discs, 40% of ps5 games are on ps4 as well and the 10% of new ps5 only games are hit and miss. Got my switch 2 preordered, only old switch games ima get is the £10 upgrades for botw & totk, after that it's gonna be switch 2 ganes. I'm tired of sonys constant ps4 remasters for a wasted console that should've been great. Just cause ps5 sold millions doesn't mean the ps5 is a success. Most ps5 owners lie to themselves to justify that their most powerful console on earth is worth the 500+ (i used to be one of them) despite it being a glorified PS4.
