Microsoft did its big annual E3 shindig today. Of course, it’s not E3 because that’s in a graveyard somewhere being pointed at by industry know-it-all Jeff Grubb. But unlike Sony, the Team in Green has decided to retain its Sunday evening summer showcase slot, so if you ignore the fact this was a pre-recorded livestream – there were no Maseratis or Keanu Reeves on a grossly expensive makeshift stage – it kinda felt like E3. A little bit. Where were we going with this?
Oh right, yeah! So, the showcase targeted titles due to release in the next 12 months, but there probably should have been a big fat asterisk next to Starfield because, um, yeah. We’ll believe it when we see it. Other games included a beautiful new Forza Motorsport, the forthcoming Arkane co-op shooter Redfall, and some updates to existing releases like Sea of Thieves and Grounded. The platform holder did break its “coming in the next year” condition for an announcement with Hideo Kojima, but we suppose that’s fair enough – even if it sounds like the cloud-based project is eons away.
All in all it was a perfectly respectable showcase with a selection of good if not mind-blowing titles. There was plenty of gameplay, a mixture of first-party and third-party content, and we’d argue a reasonable smattering of budgets and scopes. The best-received announcements appear to be the ports of Persona – no word on whether those will come to PS5 or PS4, by the way – but we’re talking about a title first released on the PSP in 2009 and another that launched on the PS Vita in 2012. Y’know!
Anyway, our big takeaway was that everything is on Game Pass – or almost everything anyway. They really, really hammered this home. Like, to the degree where every single trailer ended with a “Play It Day One on Game Pass” ident and we now see it every time we close our eyes. But, if it wasn’t already obvious, it really put into sharp focus just how much of an uphill battle Sony has with its new PS Plus tiers. Reminder: the revamp launches in North America tomorrow and we still don’t know whether the PS1 games will use NTSC ROMs or not – and we definitely don’t know the full lineup of All PS Plus Games.
Sony, of course, sees its business a little differently. It’s ambled aimlessly about the “virtuous cycle”, and how it’s concerned that releasing its first-party games day one into a subscription could hurt the quality of its content. (Well, the Sony developed MLB The Show 22 aside, anyway!) This is almost certainly all true, but at what point does consumer perception begin to furrow its brow at a $69.99 copy of The Last of Us: Part I when the competitor is giving away everything for free*? Said competitor may have pockets that are trillion dollars deep, but that’s not really the point, is it?
Now, to be fair, we’ve yet to see what the flow of content will be like for PS Plus Extra and PS Plus Premium – it’ll be a few months before we can draw any firm conclusions. And, while it seems like Microsoft’s business is booming, it’s not like this is a zero-sum game: the PS5 is doing brilliantly well, too, aside from the fact you can’t buy one of the bloody things! Maybe the Japanese giant will find a happy medium between adding big first-party releases in a timely manner and still registering huge full-price sales – a kind of best of both worlds that satisfies everyone, including the shareholders.
But another Xbox showcase down and we kinda come back to the cyclical conversation: the games were fine, but the services are doing the heavy lifting. Can Sony compete with that, considering its parent company has a much smaller kitty? Or is the impact of a rival’s business model being exaggerated? It’s certainly going to be an interesting generation; the industry looks likely to be unrecognisable by the end of it.

Sony can't rely on this new service like Microsoft does though, take away gamepass from Microsoft and then there's no reason to own an xbox console, it's literally what every xbox gamer relies on these days.
I don't want sony to become like that
Though they could do with some third party AAA and indie day one drops, and keep the first party games as buy only
And you're forgetting one important detail, Microsoft have billions to throw away, Sony don't!
The last three games I've gone through - Citizen Sleeper, Eiyuden Chronicles and Octopath Traveler - were all via GamePass, and also the three best games I've played in a long time. Sony hasn't convinced me they're going to do anything close to comparable.
Great article
High on life and Wo long looked great for me
PlayStation have absolutely nothing to worry about on that showing if I'm honest. I'm surprised they didn't show Stalker 2, that means it's either over a year away from release or Microsoft are not putting much stock into it.
I agree and I think it's a super easy to solve this. Just make deals with AAA studios, we don't even need Sony's own exclusives on the service for it to compete. We need more indies and AAA games on the service day one, it's actually quite simple.
There are A TON of great indie games coming, just make deals with the devs and you will have a nice game to add every single month.
Also, MS conference was terribly mediocre, just like Starfield looks, imo.
Sony already is starting to put day 1's on the service as they've already put Shadow Warrior 3 and Stray will also be there. I don't want them to put everything on the service day one because it will absolutely suffer in quality. The only great looking game in that entire bloated overlong conference was Starfield. The reality is Gamepass costs Microsoft so much money they don't even detail Xbox's profit, which means it's in the negative. People can keep subbing if they want to save money, but just don't be surprised why there's so many f2p live service games.
Sammy alludes to this in the article, but I think it's worth highlighting just how... Game Pass-y a lot of the games were in the Xbox showcase. I don't think any of them looked particularly bad, but none of them blew me away.
Game Pass as it stands is fantastic value — there's no denying that. But so many of the games on show today were very ordinary, and if that's reflective of what it takes to stack a subscription service like Game Pass, then I honestly think it's a bit of a worrying trend.
While I understand that not every game can have a AAA budget, it does make me wonder about the direction that Microsoft is trying to take gaming, kicking and screaming if necessary.
Quality over quantity and all that.
It’s a nice idea but I swear MS have been promising new games for the last 10 years and we have yet to see any of them (outside the usual suspects, Forza, Halo etc.). Meanwhile, Sony have been releasing a steady stream of first party games for years now. I know which business model I prefer and it isn’t Microsoft’s.
@AFCC I agree about Starfield. Couple the rough gameplay with Todd Howard at the helm and I want to stay away from that game until they squash the Starship Troopers sized bugs that will inevitably plague the game months after release.
PS Plus isnt trying to be game pass though. Sony dont want to compete. They want to stick with their exisitng model of $70 dollar games, and its still working for them so what is the incentive to change. If they start to see a big impact on their bottom line, only then will they emulate game pass.
But they have been very clear that a game pass service will not sustain the types of games they want to make - and so far there has been nothing released to game pass that does anything to combat that view.
Sony has a massive problem, but its not Game Pass. It is PR and Comms. Quite frankly they stink and at this point ive almost had enough. Its boring now. Its not mystique. Its arrogance.
On the subject of PS Plus, lets be frank. Its PS Now with half the content missing, which they are charging a similar price for. They have tried to fluff it up with a few PS5 games and hope no one notices.
Imagine MS sliding $500M into Kojima's pocket to make PT for Xbox 😜😜😆😆 I mean guy's going round talking about "making something he always wanted to make."
@zhoont Thanks for reading!
@Deadhunter maybe you need to play better games.
😉
As for Game Pass, it's quantity not quality that rules. Most games shown look alright, nothing must play about them. For some people that's fine, after all most of the stuff Netflix produces is ok or average at best but drop enough new content and the peasants will be happy.
Stray is coming to the new Plus, I'm sure that won't be last game that releases day one on this modified subscription service.
Apart from Starfield and Forza, none of the Xbox games can rival the AAA releases that Sony specialise in. For now anyway.
Sony will be fine, give the new Plus time to grow and evolve. Expecting it from day one to be the same as Game Pass feels a tad naive and also self-entitled.
...and it a few more days, Microsoft has another 90 minute show with even more news. I can bet it will be more Game Pass announcements.
I am shocked there hasn't been a "PlayStation When?" article about Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty here; especially given that it's being led by producers Fumihiko Yasuda (Nioh) and Masaaki Yamagiwa (Bloodborne).
Pretty high PlayStation exclusive pedigree for a Day One Game Pass game.
@TheArt he also said that he wasn't interested in another horror game
Sammy barker. The resident playstation hater.
Xbox are all in on quantity over quality right now. It feels like Sony had more of an impact in a 30 minute SoP then Xbox's 90 minute show. The highlights for them were Redfall which I'm sure will be good but that type of game is a bit long in the tooth at this point. The Kojima game isn't a big loss since he's doing something for PlayStation anyway. And Starfield just looks like No Man's Sky with a bigger budget.
Great, balanced article. I actually enjoyed Xbox’s showcase quite a bit despite probably not being able to play most of the games. Starfield really appeals to me too! But I bought a PS5 so I’m mostly focused on what I can play there. As it stands, there are plenty games on the PS5 that I want.
@Razrye888 Hates it so much he's spent close to his whole adult life writing about it!
@PoopScoop yes they do
https://dotesports.com/business/news/xboxs-2021-revenue-set-record-high-exceeded-16-billion
@GamingFan4Lyf Well we're trying to find out if it's coming to PlayStation or not. We don't have PR yet.
Really think we'll all have a better idea how comparable the two services are a few months into Sony's revamp. Just hard to say at the moment.
Sony did say that 1st party games wouldn't be day 1 but as shown by Stray, some 3rd party games will be day 1. XGS day 1 on Game Pass so far for 2022 is:
Not a strong lineup.
I was not impressed with this showcase at all and actually am happy that Sony doesn’t forgo any quality by putting all there games in a subscription service.
@ShogunRok There was plenty of “quality” in the Microsoft showcase. And I think it’s ridiculous that you as a writer here are saying “quantity over quality”. I have lost some respect for you saying something fanboy like that.
How does Forza Motorsport for instance, look “ordinary”? It looks way more next-gen than GT7 with ray tracing even on the track.
Sony can't simply "eat it". MS is doing just that. MS can do that indefinitely too because they're a trillion dollar company who can make up any loses and still profit from like they they didn't lose anything in a quarter. MS seems more concerned with quantity. Treating games as a hivemind rather than individuals. And that's all I thought about as I watched that horrible games showcase today. Xbox has more studios than PlayStation and had more studios than PlayStation at the time even before they bought Bethesda. So what the heck is going on over there? This company had to nerve to launch a console with no 1st party games and years later show up like this. No PlayStation, don't do what Xbox is doing.
@AdamNovice that's the problem with running a subscription service, to keep people subscribed they need to constantly add new games every month otherwise people will lose interest, the only way of Microsoft doing that is by increasing their game output and shortening development time, which mean studios won't have enough time to make their games the best they possibly can and will focus on making live service games they can slowly update and single player games on the level of indie games. Gaming will be stale in 20-30 years time.
@Grumblevolcano There we’re lots of others that you failed to mention. From Pure Xbox:

@Razrye888 Yeah but the $$$$ could change a man's mind.
@WadeIsInsane This is a great comment!
It doesn't compare to gamepass. Microsoft just killed it. Starfield looks incredible. Not much out for xbox ATM but that's going to change. They will win this generation
Removed - trolling/baiting; user is banned
@Martsmall I said profit, nowhere in that article do they list profit. Xbox only gloats revenue which means nothing when your company is losing money and you have to fund everything from other parts of the conglomerate.
@awp69 Never said there wasn't any quality — just saying that none of the games blew me away. Big reveals like Resident Evil 4 and Final Fantasy XVI had a much bigger impact, in my opinion.
@awp69 I specifically mentioned XGS as day 1 1st party titles is the main thing that distinguishes Game Pass from PS+ Extra/Premium. Everything you listed except the 3 I already mentioned and 2 free updates (Fallout 76, Flight Sim) are 3rd party games.
@Sakisa The irony when the only game that looked great in that entire 90 minute show was the big open world Oscar bait game.
Sony (and Nintendo) will never copy gamepass completely when their games sell millions at £70. Also apart from few exceptions alot of there games on the xbox showcase looked very low budget comparison to what alot of sony studios produce. I think sony and ms have very different approach to gaming atm. Also am I the only one that thought starfield is very similar to no man sky haha.
@Grumblevolcano But they’re all coming to GamePass on Day 1. Games like the A Plague’s Tale sequel are highly anticipated games. So those bigger releases coming day one are still what distinguishes GamePass from PS+ Extra. Why does it matter if it’s first party if you are getting great new games on Day One?
And I’m totally on board with PS+ extra, happy to see games like Stray coming. I just don’t see how anyone can bash the GamePass line up either.
@get2sammyb Didn't stop y'all from writing an article about Persona 3, 4, 5 coming to Xbox and PC.
I am just busting your chops; I know there is a difference between a historically PlayStation game releasing on another platform than a totally new IP.
@ShogunRok beauty is in the eye of the beholder, I guess. Starfield, Redfall, Forza Motorsport, Wo Long Fallen Dynasty and Plague Tale: Requiem didn’t look “GamePass-y” to me.
@BritneyfR_ee
Totally agree, give me sack boy, miles morales, Returnal, Horizon Forbidden West
Any day over game pass offerings.
Then to come GOW2, Spider-Man 2, Last of us etc.
Other than Forza and Starfield all other games were meh. But boy,,,
i'm jealous about Persona trilogy on gamepass..How they pull it off? Guess money. There was no Persona game on Xbox before. Ofc i already got P5R, but only got P4 and P3 on Vita and PSP,
@PoopScoop the indies looked more interesting and all pales in comparison to Silksong so nah.
@Royalblues Sony is worth barely 100 Billion Dollar after the Stock market Crash while the only departments that make money are Sony Music and SIE. They are not rich at all lol, especially not in comparsion to MS which has infinite money.
Nintendo is in fact richer than Sony. Let that sink in.
I feel like PlayStation has a game pass problem about as much as Nintendo does. There’s room for all platforms to do their own thing and people can decide what’s the best value for them personally.
@Ssimsim are you crazy? It looks millions times better look at the video ign posted there's no comparison at all. It's a must buy. I'll buy an xbox just for this game thays how good it looks
I find it strange that so many sites want PS to go full Gamepass route, but you never see sites pushing the same thing on Nintendo. It's like PS has to follow Xbox for some reason when it makes no sense and they're each doing fine following their own route.
@ThatMusicFan Physical game sales don’t lie, but they also only tell a fraction of the truth. I do agree on Nintendo outdoing Xbox on output, but they’re also running laps around Sony in my book too.
Also gotta love being modded for calling Sony’s AAA output bland (which aside from Spider-Man I maintain that opinion) when far worse comments get made.
@Tharsman Well, three of them are from Microsoft-owned studios, so that makes sense. Plague Tale is great, but it's not quite the kind of AAA title most would perceive as a blockbuster — more 'AA', even if that's a bit of an outdated term.
I agree on Wo Long, but that's one third party game out of everything. I think there's a good reason we don't see everything get put on Game Pass. Right now, Xbox is happy to flood it with "lesser" games to increase its perceived value.
I think it'll be very interesting to see where it ends up over the next few years.
@Postie85 your right ill always have a playstation for the exclusives & don't mind paying of they are worth it. I do think having games like starfield day one is impressive though
On another note, this article alludes to PS+ revamp being just hours away in the US. Anyone know if it will start at midnight? Or not be until sometime tomorrow?
@Royalblues i appreciate your point. One thing to consider though is that MS makes a huge chunk of their money from licensing software. They can run Xbox at a loss and still make a profit. However, no company will do that forever and most companies can't afford to do that even short term. That being said either ms is paying out a huge amount of money to subsidize putting day one titles on the service and/or developers are losing money on possible sales. I can see why Sony said no initially to this as games will suffer, especially single player story games. It will be interesting to see how it all plays out.
@ShogunRok “Right now, Xbox is happy to flood it with "lesser" games to increase its perceived value.”
This is again a ridiculous comment. There’s been plenty of AAA games including Sony’s own The Show 22 launching on GamePass. And even most of the indies have been great like Tunic.
“Lesser” is an unbelievably one sided fanboy comment that isn’t really looking at everything on GamePass.
In addition to the big games, I’ve played so many incredible games thanks to GamePass. Honestly think they do an outstanding job picking out games that they know will be good. Very few duds. But you believe whatever you want.
@awp69 I agree that calling those games ‘lesser’ seems fanboyish or at the very least pretentious. I’d play 10 games like Death’s Door or Hades before considering a game like Horizon.
Look at gran turismo 7 a decent game but costs £70 to add to that they increased the cost of microtransactions after release. On xbox they are going to offer forza a game just as good if not better for free if you gave gamepass! I have a good job & even I struggle to pay £70 for one game. You gotta admit gamepass is fantastic value!!
@ThatMusicFan We can agree to disagree in terms of quality then, different strokes, because I doubt minds will be changed on this. I get more out of Gamepass than I see Sony giving me in terms of stuff I would want exclusive to their ecosystem. But putting Sony games on a pedestal as inherently better rubs me the wrong way.
@Sakisa @awp69 I think my comments are being a bit twisted here, but nevermind. I used "lesser" as shorthand for the kind of games we just saw in the Xbox showcase. And I never said Game Pass was bad. In fact, my first comment says that it's incredibly good value — which it is.
I'm just trying to highlight the kind of games that have to be added to it in bulk in order for Microsoft to maintain the perception that everything is on Game Pass. And again, it'll be very interesting to see how it manages this over the next few years.
@Ryany yeah it looked alot better of course but hello games is tiny studio in comparrison. I mean more the extraction tool, the planet system, the ships, the moverment of suit even the UI looked very similar
@Ryany they've already lost the generation...they have NOTHING of worth to show until next year. The console is coming up on 2 years old. It's a shambles how little output they've had from their studios. Insomniac alone put them all to shame.
I got 6 months free gamepass with my new broadband this month, so trying it out on my laptop. Very very little worth playing for me, octopath traveller i am playing through, other than that, maybe forza.
I think everyone is bigging gamepass up too much, there was nothing of note at Microsofts press conference today, as shogunrok said, everything looked a bit cheap. i dont think so y have anything to worry about
Removed - unconstructive feedback
@awp69 We just don't know, annoyingly. Have to wait and see what happens.

@PoopScoop This is something I've mentioned many times in many articles to be honest. Sony is the only one ever dragged into this conversation, and I agree, it's weird. It's just how it is, though.
While I think it's good to have subscription services as a way to play a wide variety of games I don't think it should be a service used to only expect all the latest releases from all publishers. There seems to be a growing number of people that seem entitled to have every game as part of these services so they never have to pay full price for new games ever. The Xbox showcase today didn't exactly scream must subscribe to me but for others it might have done. I personally don't care if a game comes out day one as I don't always have the time to invest in every big release right away anyway and have used both PS Now and gamepasss as ways to play games I usually wouldn't play or buy myself. Relying solely on them though I could never do and think Sony is wise not to put all their games on day one.
Removed - trolling/baiting
@Ryany Google what Sony released in 2022 and you'll have your answer. That's not even mentioning the launch titles they had too.
Removed - discussing moderation
@daveofduncan I own a ps5 I know what games have come out. I just don't see anything like starfield that game looks unbelievable for someone like me who's into space. Lots of remakes, sequels on playstation Where's the original stuff?
I still don't think Gamepass is sustainable in its current form. Look how quickly Netflix went downhill as soon as it needed to turn a profit. And Netflix's potential market is much much bigger
Just a reminder: it's okay to post opinions, even if they're unpopular, but please don't try and drag other users into arguments, or your comment could be removed on the grounds of 'baiting' or 'trolling'.
Are you seriously going to write this exact same article every time Microsoft holds a show?
We get it. Microsoft has deep pockets and Sony doesn't. If you haven't hammered that point home by now, then what the point of this is.
We all know Microsoft will outbid Sony at every. You're not breaking new ground, you're just fishing for outrage clicks.
@BartoxTharglod "Video games, by their very nature, require much more of a time commitment"
It doesn't have to be. In fact if people on here are to be believed, they'd much rather have a 10 hour story driven game than an open world game.
@awp69 doubt the revamp will be live before noon eastern time. So like 18 hours from now.
Just want to say that I think PS+ Extra may not compete on day one as much but that doesn’t mean it can’t do it’s own thing and be worth the investment. Time will tell.
Why can’t both be great?
Sony don't need to do the day 1 releases, there exclusives sell millions.
Yea the amount of games being brought to GamePass are unreal. If I wasn't so heavily invested in my account with trophy hunting I'd definitely jump ship and just play Sonys exclusives as I see fit.
@Royalblues "worth" and "cash on hand" is something very different and Nintendo is massively undervalued. Nintendo was in fact the richest Japanese company last year while Sony not even making it in the Top 10. If one could effort anothet Gamepass Model it would be Big N lol, especially since their Games cost way less to develop.
@ShogunRok basically what you're trying to say is take away some of the first party bigger titles such as forza, Redfall and starfield, then your left with "lesser" games which means games that would struggle to sell a million copies or even get noticed if it wasn't on gamepass.
It's not hours away it launched in may lol just because it hasn't launched in the US yet doesn't mean it hasn't launched , America isn't the only continent on the planet 🤷♂️
After watching the xbox show today I now know not to keep my gamepass subscription after July not until 2023 when the big games launch, I got gamepass to play xbox's big exclusives and so far since I've had it I've played forza horizon 5 and halo infinite (for 5 hours), their third party offering isn't the best as its just full or indies and AA offerings that I just don't have time for with the amount of bigger games launching every month from now, that's the problem with gamepass that most users want to play Microsofts exclusives but they just don't have any until 2023 and then will struggle to keep a constant supply of them each year, there will be a lot of people subscribing and then unsubscrbing every month that a big games comes to it because there's not enough big new games to keep people constantly subscribed
Xbox fans screaming that Sony needs to put day one game on ps+. But if Sony did that, then almost no one will talk about gamepass anymore.
If gamepass is so great for developers why dont we see lots of third party AAA games day one, its mostly indies.
So the deal is, pay more money and get day one releases, which are unfinished, and which I won’t get to play for months or years anyway because Life? No thanks.
I literally was uninterested in just about everything in the presentation, and the triple AAA games looked like gamepass fodder outside of persona games. Also Gamepass is only around because microsoft not xbox can eat major losses year after year
@Ryany so sackboy, Returnal, horizon forbidden West, Deathloop, ghostwire Tokyo, Forspoken, kena Bridge of spirits, ghost of tsushima and ratchet and clank are all original stuff?
Removed - trolling/baiting; user is banned
Hopefully, Sony doubles down on quality. They are not a multi-trillion-dollar company that can just buy up every franchise that's popular and buy their way to the top by giving it away for pennies on the dollar.
Microsoft sucks
Sony sucks
Nintendo sucks
Corpo rats
Why don't we all ask the guys behind elden ring, cyberpunk, dying light 2, hogwarts legacy, callisto protocol, Gotham Knights, stranger of paradise, lego star Wars, evil dead, saints row, Gollum and Avatar why their games aren't/won't be on gamepass day one?
We all know the answer
@UltimateOtaku91 sackboy? Awful game I mean maybe for kids it's good but I wasn't impressed hzdfw I was disappointed at paying full price just mote horizon didn't feel much different to the first game & so much dialogue & I didn't like any of it. The characters, story just wasn't for me. Kenya also bought but feel like it's more for kids & returnal I just couldn't get into. Nothing has grabbed me so far. Elden ring is the best game I've played in years but that's on xbox as well. I even bought a switch for something to play.
@Ryany and you're saying halo infinite and flight simulator are better than all of those?
Removed - disrespecting others
@UltimateOtaku91 no absolutely not that's nothing on xbox out now but looking at next year it could be stacked. The one thing with xbox is day one games om gamepass not just exclusive games but lots of smaller games that cost 20 quid a go on playstation. Add that to games like starfield it's gonna be hard to stick with playstation seen as I only want one main console.
@Deadlyblack oh that's a Bethesda certified bugfest.
But the game looks like Outer Worlds 2.0 or No Man's Sky 2.0. There is nothing actually exciting about it! Not even the 1000 promised planets since I know for a fact most will be barren wastelands.
Removed - flaming/arguing
It was a good show. Nothing special or mind-blowing, but solid.
I wasn't convinced by Diablo IV before this, but now I will absolutely be getting it.
Starfield had some very cool spaceship stuff, but other than that it didn't really wow me. It looks like something I've played already.
I'm a little relieved to be honest because I don't think I'll have time to play a game that big anyway.
The rest was good, but as you say in the article it was the Game Pass service itself that did most of the lifting. There will be lots of, "Oh I can play this game without having to pay extra," rather than, "That game looks awesome and I must play it."
Which is great for AA devs of course.
I think the key for Sony will be getting third party games to launch on Plus. They're off to a good start with Stray, to be fair.
Then again, what if putting third party stuff in Plus on day 1 makes people further question paying full price for first party games? 😂
fml
Of course we still don't know if Game Pass has reached 30 million subs yet. (Or do we? Correct me if I'm wrong please.)
But yeah, while I'm yet to subscribe to Game Pass and I probably won't based on this show, I came away from it with one new game on my wishlist. Evening well spent.
Edit: While I think it was a decent enough show, I think some of the other comments above make fair points about quality over quantity. Other than Diablo IV, nothing in this show had me excited to see a release date.
I'll pick up the Xbox dongle/stick for cheap, around 2030 and sub to gamepass 3 months for a quid. If any of the big hitters are actually out by then and if I'm still into gaming!
Silksong looks great though I'll get it on Switch and PS5.
It looks like Microsoft's strategy going forward is not to sell consoles anymore...but instead to sell Gamepass. They don't even want to sell games...literally just anything on Gamepass. As long as they can get you subscribed to service, does it matter what you play on? Another way of saying it is...if you're a developer and you aren't on Gamepass... you're probably not going to make much on the platform.
I feel like either this or next generation will be the last in terms of traditional Xbox consoles.
@UltimateOtaku91 I'd say gamepass isn't the only reason people buy Xbox consoles.
I got a Series X to partner my PS5 as I wanted to play old games via backwards compatibility with FPS boost, auto hdr and quick resume, none of which Sony are planning to do as they don't like legacy games.
The hype around gamepass Is the most impressive thing about gamepass, Sony should follow Nintendo’s lead and just do their own damn thing.
@ApostateMage you forgot stadia and Apple.
@DonJorginho The way Microsoft handles their legacy content vs how Sony handled it was one of the first things to annoy me about the direction Sony is heading. It’s telling how they’re playing catch up with that now and even then can’t do right by their PS3 legacy games.
I’ve been waiting for the XB showcase to show me why I need to buy a XB. Nothing shown today convinced me! There is a TON of games coming to GP day one but that doesn’t mean that they look like great games. Some look cool and some will come to PS 3 mths down the rd. Starfield was suppose to be the reason I need one. It missed for me. I don’t want to build anything and as far as space shooters go, Calisto Protocol and Dead Space remake look way better.
There were 2 games keeping me on the PS ecosystem. Persona games and Ghost of Tsushima. Now the last 3 Persona games will be on my Xbox and all of the other games I like I can get on my Switch. I have kept my PS4 as I am interested in Stray and may want to go back to GOT, but I can't think of any other Sony exculsive games I like. I have at least 5 or 6 Xbox games coming on gamepass which I can save a lot of money on.
Unless you like those cinematic type of games or Marvel stuff Sony doesn't do much else.
As others have said, nothing shown makes me think I need an Xbox right now but in a year or two time? That's a different matter entirely.
I'd rather just have the one console but a good game is a good game and it looks as if Xbox are building a decent library on Game Pass.
Those billions and billions AND billions of dollars spent look like they might be finally paying off.
😉
Still give me a Sony AAA sp 'cinematic' game over anything Xbox showed today, including Starfield.
Ok buy an Xbox then, if you love what they are doing so much.
Thats how the market works, if you dont like something buy the competitors. Sony doesnt have to give things away for free because you want them to.
This is how their business works, it’s probably how theyve built a profit. Microsoft has a lot more extra money than sony does. You wont see sony spending 70 billion for a company. Especially when people r complaining about spending money on a game, its makes it even harder for them to rack up the profits to do that.
Buy an Xbox. You wont though right ?
Being console agnostic, the titles I'm lukewarm about I play on game pass (most Indies, and western releases), while the stuff I'm absolutely into I play primarily on PlayStation or Switch (1st party, Action adventures, jrpg's, trpg's).
I think psplus extra will do fine if they frequently add smaller games like stray. People need to get there heads out of their asses about tripple A. The subscription model doesn't even pay if you play 60+ hours AAA games. Things like the quarry, resident evil etc are perfect with playtimes under 15h.
I was pleased with the Xbox showcase and can easily see myself buying a Series S for Hollowknight if it’s a timed exclusive for my kids.
I can also see myself buying a Series X next summer for myself after many of those games have released along with the opportunity to play older Xbox games I missed.
Apart from starfield which looks like a cross between no mans sky ,elite and skyrim and it looks fantastic ,the rest was all a bit meh in my opinion, what happened to all these studios microsoft has acquired, looks like they've given them all a budget of a pound each and the rest was given to Todd Howard.
@Darylb88 doesn't make any sense, youre considering moving to xbox for games you already own as your a big fan of persona, they did the same thing with the ff games and the next ff game is a ps exclusive, whos to say the next new persona wont be
@UltimateOtaku91 There are some wonderful games that you can only play Xbox.
Not a problem when you’re in a different league.
Game Pass vs PlayStation Studios.
I know which i’d pick.
@ATaco this is what everyone has been saying since the ps4 trounced the xbox one ,microsoft wouldve pulled the plug on the console if not for game pass.
@__jamiie wonderful? Like ?
@UltimateOtaku91 most of the games on gamepass are absolute tosh ,xbox players will not play persona ,well they've been trashing them for years so I suspect they will,or maybe best games ever now 😁
@Jacko11 exactly. Sony is quality
no biggie. im good with Sony studios offerings, and am willing to pay for them
Seems gamers are happy renting games now ,somebody shouldve told blockbuster all they needed to do is get an employee to come round and download a mediocre game for customers ,maybe they wouldn't have gone bust.
I agree. The presentation really showed the value of game pass. I was excited the entire way through. So many games and a huge variety of games and genres. I appreciated they started the show by sticking to a year of what’s to come. Probably not with all of them but it gave us a scope. Game pass is a steal.
Removed - trolling/baiting
I'm honestly blown away that Sony doesn't offer a flat discount on first party titles if you're a certain tier of this new PS+. If they didn't offer their games day one, but you always had, like, a flat $10 discount on them (even during sales), it'd go a long way to quell criticism.
Microsoft's lineup is still so paltry compared to PlayStation and will be 1-2 years at least before Microsoft starts to catch up, what actually came out this year for big AAA Microsoft games? Or is coming the rest of the year?
@tallythwack where have you been for the past 30 years? Renting games has always been a big thing.
I've exclusively owned every single playstation console from PS1 to PS5. I'll almost certainly buy an XBOX for the first time once Starfield releases, and I'm not sure I'll ever buy another PlayStation. As a consumer having an Xbox is beginning to look like the better value.
@Sqush-Pare you're surprised they didn't show off a game whose developers were still based in Ukraine until like a month ago?
There might just be a method to Sony’s marketing madness. When you compare 1st party output, I think it’s a no brainer where the good solid consistent flow of games is coming from (and it’s not MS). But furthermore, when you look at 3rd party, most of the heavy hitters aren’t coming to GamePass. This fact has been highlighted by recent Sony promotionals like the recent Stare of Play.
So those games are starting to align with Sony, which highlights the fact they are NOT on GamePass. So games showcased like Street Fighter 6, FF16, RE4, Hogwart’s Legacy, etc. are the third party games that will really dominate their launch period. Sony having State of Play and showcases for these games will continue to underscore the gap in third party support for the day 1 GP games. A Plague Tale is about the only multiplatform game I’m excited about that GP has confirmed as day 1. Games like Elden Ring and Gotham Knights, etc — they are the 3rd party games I’m actually interested in and I believe these games will keep a far distance from GP (as far as day 1 release)for many years to come.
@BritneyfR_ee
Exactly! Also, what ever happened to the AAAA studio they bragged about?
Microsoft had an entire generation to bolster their 1st party studios and create new franchises. They didn't, and as a result, all they could do is throw their money around and push GamePass and buy massive 3rd part publishers to basically steal exclusives. 🙄
@Kang81 they're making a Perfect Dark reboot, but almost half the staff has quit in the past year due to slow progress and lack of creative control. Unclear if and when the game will ever see the light of day.
@WizzNL Your comment actually made me think — Sony has been putting a fair amount of third or second party games on PS+ at the game’s launch for quite a while now. As you mention - Bugsnax, Oddworld: Soulstorm, Maneater (not sure if it was day 1 but it was close), Maquette, Destruction All-Stars, and even games like Fall Guys, First Class Trouble were on PS+ day 1, I think. I guess people forget that Sony has been doing day and date third party releases for a while and just never getting credit for it.
It’s probably because the quality of these games is variable. Which is exactly what the GP library day 1 library is currently. A lot of day 1 releases of indies and lesser known products. Not that these games are bad, but probably not any better than Bugsnax, Fall Guys, etc.
The I've thing that cannot be excused or justified AT ALL is the state of communications or marketing. I can fairly say that this is by far the most horrible PR policy I've ever seen from PlayStation. To be honest even worse from 2005-2007 era.
At least they communicated whatever the hell was going on.
It's like things happening in random nowadays, or we need to rely on rumors or low level gossip to get any idea what's going on.
@tallythwack I wouldn't presume that P6 will just be coming to only PS, esp now we know MS are not messing around with moneyhatting. Plus worst case scenario it will come out on PS4 even in 2025 in typical Atlus fashion. I guess I just don't have a reason to get a PS5 but I had a reason to get a Series X. The Switch covers the rest of my JRPG needs and probably exceeds what Sony can offer tbh.
Don't get me wrong I enjoyed my PS4 a lot but I just don't see the kind of variety of games I have now grown to enjoy. Just my own preference.
What is this revamp you guys are talking about?
@GusBH the new ps plus tier system. More specifically the top tier premium which they say will have expanded ps3 games for streaming, PS2 and PS1 titles. Although from what Japan has it appears to be a hardly anything at launch with ps3 offerings looking like just a watered down PS now
Well thanks to gamepass now my main console is xbox series x with switch as a portable system, and ps5 only for exclusive. Although sony is really active porting their games to pc so maybe in the end I didn't need ps5 afterall 😕
And also I just upgraded my sound system to dolby atmos and it seems ps5 didn't support it and only xbox series x that support it.
@Rmg0731 Oh okay. I have hong kong psn so I’m already subscribed to the highest tier, I thought there was more stuff coming
@GusBH yeah this is just the north american release
This is a dumb argument. Sony can't compete with Microsoft. Microsoft can take a loss on game pass for over a decade and still come out fine on the other side. When PlayStation is their main bread and butter, Sony can't afford to make mistakes. I think enough people care about owning discs that this won't be a problem in the foreseeable future...

Gamepass gang rise up who's playing shadow run next week?
@Martsmall
this is revenue, not net income. It's totally different things.
Boo! Yall are a joke lol, all my friends told me to get an Xbox and playstation sucks and game pass is the goat! Guess what???? I own both now and game pass and it's not God tier like all yall wanna think it is. After playing all the halos and gears games and forza isnt my thing it's just racing lol there's nothing. A bunch of Indies I got to try and not really care for and not bought and the other exclusives should've been on ps4 they would've actually done well like sunset overdrive and quantum break and recore xbox users didn't support them cuz they only care about online MP. I still game 90% of the time on ps and my game pass xbox is sitting there collecting dust lmao. It's used for fortnite to play with My fiance if that tells you anything. And Sony right eventually all these games for free will reduce the quality of then. I'd rather support the great games of God of War and horizon with my money then free lower quality games on gamepass. Why do devs have to try if they get a lump sum of money from Microsoft and put on gamepass day one. Watch years from now it won't be great or consumer Friendly lol
@IonMagi
Very curious about where you got that view. Doing a quick view of the marketcaps, Sony has a market value (as 1st June) of $111.57 billion, making it the 113th largest company in the world. Nintendo's market value (as 1st June) is $49.6 billion making it the 310th largest company in the work. Both pale in comparison to Microsoft which is worth $1.9 trillion.
I'm glad I picked up an Xbox recently with Game Pass. Definitely been happy with the service and it's only gonna get better.
As a long time only Playstation fan, I've grown disillusioned with the platform. PlayStation this generation can be summed up as: Pay has no Limits
@Royalblues
That's a bad take. Sony as a company would be on life support if they drastically slashed their PlayStation profits by providing their games day one on a subscription service. Microsoft won't even notice the losses or even if the Xbox division were to disappear.
@Darbu Like I said, Nintendo is extremly undervalued. In the end the Cash on hand and Profits count
https://www.thegamer.com/nintendo-officially-named-richest-company-japan-2020/#:~:text=According%20to%20Risk%20Monster%2C%20Nintendo,USD%20as%20of%20this%20year.
And like I said, Sony missed even the Top 10
Im a gamepass subscriber and day 1 doesnt mater to me either on PlayStation or xbox.
I like the way EA does it about a year after release it goes on EAplay and doesnt leave so they get game sales in the first year and you know when it goes on and stays on best of both worlds
@NomNom sony cant compete with microsoft? They have been for decades granted not always on top but they have been extremely competative as have nintendo..sony didnt need a game pass model but have decided to cater for those amongst us that wanted it..as always there is a choice to buy into it or not to..sony and nintendo will always be competition and strong competition to boot..
If Sony keeps doing what it does best it will be fine. The Xbox showcase was a constant 7/10 the whole way through: nice looking games but nothing earth-shattering.
Sony is the one making blockbuster narrative titles. Microsoft's games are designed to keep people paying for Gamepass and whilst devoid of IAP mechanics, they still work by way of seasons and services.
Sony should seek to compete in this area but not at the expense of the very reasons the PS4 sold so well.
they showed 40 games, more than 20 were gaas, 10 indies, 4-5 single player games that are probably multiplatform, and some racing stuff. Nothing to be excited. Sony's state of play last week, was far more interesting. If gamepass means gaas and indies, then Sony, please dont.
@Cherip-the-Ripper Considering it was originally penned in for a release this year you think they would have something to show.
I understand why Sony will never put their 1st party games on PS+ Extra/Premium day one, but what about third party titles or indies?
It'd be awesome to see more of that, like what's happening with Stray in July.
Tbh only the Rick&Morty game, Plague Tale, Scorn, Diablo IV and of course Starfield (I think this was absolut alpha footage, it stuttered in the beginning and the constant cuts in the mids of gameplay really got on my nerves) stood out for me. I had the feeling the rest of it were comicy multiplayer games with horrible trailer music.. and Kojimas backstab was a bitter pill to swallow. The "exclusives" presented here I'll mostly play via cloud gaming on my PC I guess. I still see no reason why to buy an Xbox at all.
@AFCC
It’s not as easy as just saying “make deals with AAA studios” because Sony clearly can’t compete financially with MS, who will just buy up subscription exclusives. Sony will never be able to compete with MS in this respect. They will just need to charge less for a service that has older games. Which is something I’m fine with because my backlog keeps growing daily.
@MidnightDragonDX
Exactly. And it’s more like every other day.
I just made fun of it but …🪓
I understand now this article is an excuse to talk about the Xbox show case. Well it was very meh. Better talk about PlayStation.
@BrotherFilmriss
Starfield reveal was so meh.
It made me sad thinking of how Mass Effect A was bashed. At least the gameplay was fun and it looked more ‘next gen’.
Why would Sony want to copy a loosing horse? Sony hopefully will stick to the model they have used for the last 28 years. Software sells hardware. I genuinely cannot see one reason as to, why to own an Xbox.
I don't understand why there is a continuous attempt to push this narrative. It's a deliberately negative topic of conversation that we already have an answer to. How many times do you need to be told, by the CEO no less, that Microsofts business model is not a financially viable option for them to replicate, that it would hurt the quality of their first party product if they attempted to.
There's a reason why Microsoft don't disclose any financial reports for gamepass, if they did it would give everyone an insight in to the obscene amounts of excess capital currently required to grow and sustain it, AND THEY'RE 5 YEARS IN.
Do you know what's funny though, if Sony did attempt to go down this route you could guarantee this site would be filled with Sammy articles talking about how poor Sony’s first party has become compared to years past, or articles titled, "why Sony’s unnecessary attempts to copy gamepass bankrupted their gaming division".
There is no problem here. PS5 is still easily outselling both the X and S combined. They are still pumping out far better quality first party games on a regular basis. They have some very exciting tech in PSVR2 about to launch, and they have some of the very best studios and developers in the industry hard at work on upcoming projects.
I know it's easy for some of the more negative commentators that congregate here to think you reflect the masses, that's what frequenting an echo chamber will do to you, but believe me you absolutely don't.
Instead of incouraging sony to copy the gamepass model, we should be more worrying that with Sony announcing more than 12 gaas games for the near future, they have already started to. Hopefully the big Sony studios will continue to produce the big quality games we expect and love, but keep hearing voices like this post, i am not optimistic.
Im just happy I can still get PS Plus for $59 a year or less on sale!
I am NOT excited about Microsofts carrot on a string with the games are coming soon!
The problem for Sony is that Microsoft has the deep pockets to let Game Pass be a cash drain. It's not profitable at all for them at current levels (they admit as much themselves), but that's fine. They are playing the long game and this is the only way they can challenge Sony at the moment.
I personally think Sony's counter is good. You get lots of value with it, while it being cheaper than XGP. The main concern I do have, is the lack of a proper xCloud alternative. With XGP you can play the games in Windows, Mac and mobile, besides the console. With PS Plus it's a mixed bag. Some games are on the old PS Now, but PS Now doesn't work Macs or mobile. The only way to achieve that is to use Remote Play, while overall working fine a broader PS Now alternative would be nice.
@ShogunRok I've yet to find a positive article from him. Must be exhausting and unhealthy hating so much
@Deadhunter I mean you could have played those games without GP by buying them. I did.😁
@Milktastrophe no it hasn't 😂
I couldn't care less about 90% of the games that have hit Gamepass day one. Gears and Forza sure, a few interesting indies here and there, it's not enough to justify the fees for a guy like me who doesn't have time nor cares to play every game. If Xbox ever gets a steady cadence of quality exclusives added then maybe I'd change my mind.
Sony could certainly change my mind if they did day one but they'd need as many premium subscribers as they currently have in total to sustain that and I'd be shocked if even 5 million people sign up for premium.
@WizzNL Oh yeah, there’s a few more in that list which I had forgot were day 1 also.
Furthermore, we have non-PS+ giveaways like the Play at Home games (I forget all of them but I think Horizon Zero Dawn, The Nathan Drake Collection, and Ratchet & Clank were some of them) which were literally just given out to anyone with a PS account. Not to mention Astro’s Playroom, also a giveaway and one of the best games I played last year, was a first party day 1 release.
I could see a future where Sony will drop smaller first party games day 1 and several of their live-service games will probably launch on PS+ day 1. This hybrid style will be fine with me of a little bit of day 1 PS+ release and a little bit of big budget releases for purchase the traditional way. I think Sony can have it both ways if they continue to partner with third parties.
Why would you not want to own an Xbox without Games Pass, @UltimateOtaku91? I'm curious to hear your reasoning...
They didn't show Stalker, @Sqush-Pare, because the timing of the release is currently up in the air due to the war in Ukraine. Microsoft were only showing games due to be released within the next 12 months, and they cannot be certain that Stalker will be ready because of the war. It has nothing to do with the quality of the game, just the logistics in getting it made in a war-zone...
The exclusives for PS for next 12 months not that great either, maybe 2 games I'll buy and one is a remake.
Everything else is multiplatform so may as well get a Series X with gamepass for all that as well as the choice to play what ever else I fancy.
@Fiendish-Beaver figures from thsi gen and last gen, xbox was slowly dying off last gen with some really poor sales and lack of first party games, yet their sales picked up once gamepass got better and now it's all everyone who owns an xbox talks about and can clearly tell Microsoft are betting all their chips on it.
Without gamepass Microsoft wouldn't of bought Bethesda or Activision either.
Microsoft are gambling all in on gamepass and all their fans are buying into it, so take that away and your left with nothing or close to nothing
@lolwhatno salam alaikum bro. Well I didn't buy it so not particularly well I guess. I did interestingly enough re-install the ps4 and get wired internet so I guess I could get it. But it's still getting so much bad rep about every other month I'd rather just try the new motorsport game (that took some delicious jabs at gt7 btw if you haven't seen it) and if it doesn't turn out too well I guess I could check out gt7 by then and see if it has turned out for the better much like gt sport did after a while. Instead I've just been playing dark souls 3 actually, beat the abyss dude last monday, wolnir yesterday. Totally not making good time at all and not really enjoying it either (low framerate, lack of a build and willingness to farm makes combat rather difficult).
How's you been? Finally got to elden ring? Still waiting for a sale? Finally got off the apex addiction?
Okay, there maybe a small amount of merit to your take, @UltimateOtaku91, but two things strike me immediately, firstly, every game on the Game Pass would be available on the Xbox anyway, so the choice would still be there. And secondly, Games Pass is not going anywhere! It's just getting better and better; more games, and more diverse games (and I speak as someone that rarely plays anything from the Games Pass). Ultimately, Games Pass is not essential to owning an Xbox, but it is certainly a good reason to do so. I have friends that solely play games from the Games Pass (they're basically broke, so buying games is out of the question. However Games Pass gives them the opportunity to game at an affordable price, and whilst offering they a wide variety of choice, and that is a massive selling point for the service and for Xbox).
@lolwhatno wait I'm confused, asking on the forums about what game now? Gt7? I've already formed an opinion on it and I've only played the second one. That was one of my first games ever. So no clue on whether I'll like this or not. Very much so a toss up.
-
Oh I'm not meaning the lack of a variety in builds, it's moreso the lack of willingness on my part to look into builds and how to go and tackle the game with it. I always just pick whatever and go with it in any game, I know these games are different but at this point I can't even re-spec yet and I'm too far in to go and restart the game. I just entered the boreal valley so I'll see what that's about, and yeah I know about the farm spots. Got some dark knight gear or whatever it was called out of it but I'm not gonna do that all frickin day, I just wanna play the game yano.
And yes I did mean the abyss watcher(s), pretty cool fight, I continued this game after a 2 year sabbatical btw, feel like I should mention that.
Oh that's all very nice, I hope you enjoy those games bro, I've got a ps5 version for miles myself but can't play it on the ps4 obviously.
Oh man we could've met in-game, I played nms till about a month ago. Got into this group with xbox ambassadors and this one guy guided us all through it in a very nice comfortable way. Done with it by now though sadly.
I hope the the results are fortuitous my friend, there's a whole new world waiting for you.
And no need for the apologies lol, like I said before I like reading your stuff.
Don't have a good day, have a great day!
@Northern_munkey I'm talking about strictly gamepass.
Sony cannot do day one launch on PS plus essential/extra/premium. It's simply not doable.
I don't even know if I care about gamepass or want the equivalent on Playstation tbh
I'm not sure what I want the service to be.
If they gave you free Tidal hifi subscription as part of the premium tier then I would subscribe, especially if they made a tidal app for the console.
But outside of longer game demos for ALL new releases bit some cherry picked ones I'm not sure what else I'd pay more money for.
The only game two games Xbox has that I want are the next Elder Scrolls, &the next Hollow Knight. Both of those I'm salty we won't have, & might not ever have...but I wouldn't buy an Xbox purely for those.
I'd rather see Sony go and acquire capcom, square Enix, & maybe FromSoft & basically lock up a bunch of the best developers so we can have even more amazing 1st party games tbh.
@NomNom they dont really need to
@WizzNL Right my bad...I guess what I meant to say was I wished they did it with almost all third party games and indies at launch.
Like what Xbox does with Game Pass.
@WizzNL That's fair! here's hoping they go that route at least.
@UltimateOtaku91 "take away gamepass from Microsoft and then there's no reason to own an xbox console" Spoken like a true Sony Pony fanboy/girl...
"Said competitor may have pockets that are trillion dollars deep, but that’s not really the point, is it?"
Sorry, I had to make an account just to comment on this nonsense because it is exactly the point.
Microsoft, as you've quite rightly pointed out, have lots of money. LOTS more money than Sony. So they can afford to make a loss on Gamepass in the pursuit of users, whereby the can then in the future raise the price when they've either blown Sony out of the water or just built up a large enough user base.
Sony need the money from selling their games. That's how they make cash. They've just lost the best selling game on their console every year for the past ten years. Imagine how much exclusive content will go on Cod on Gamepass. It's going to slowly but surely kill them. Jim Ryan and his utter incompetence doesn't help, mind.
Gamepass is toxic. It's a great deal for gamers but awful for the industry.
Since it’s all about the Xbox show here I find funny how every one influenced by the media is wrongly pretending Jim Ryan lies but never even realise how Xbox are lying all the time. ‘All those games are coming to Xbox in the next 12 months’.
You joking. 12 months goes to mid June 2023 🧐😅
It really is a propaganda machine from top to bottom.
In just a week of PS Plus Extra I got more games to play that are worth my time compared to 2 years of Gamepass.
I am in Japan so all of the Legend of Heroes games I am slowly starting to get through, which is quite a lot. I don’t get any such thing on Gamepass right now.
I still have a yearly Gamepass though, as it saves me money for some of the upcoming games announced for this year.
@Sqush-Pare Stalker 2 is only a timed exclusive for Xbox.
it will be out a few months after for ps5
