Reviews for Far Cry 6 have started dropping, and guess what? The general consensus appears to be that this is just more Far Cry. Who saw that one coming? To be fair, some reviews are a lot more positive than others. A few reckon that Ubisoft's latest is a genuine step forward for the open world series, while naysayers are keen to point out unlikeable characters and a tired gameplay loop. A somewhat mixed reception, even if we have heard all of the criticisms before.
As for our own review, we're still playing through Far Cry 6. Unfortunately, we received code quite late, and we didn't want to rush our verdict. Keep an eye out for the Push Square review in the near future.
Eurogamer - N/A
If you were looking for a sequel that would shake up the series and bring about a gameplay revolution, you're going to be disappointed, but if you enjoy that classic Far Cry collect-em-up grind and simply want a brand new sandbox to explore and explode, you're going to be far from bored with all that Yara has to offer.
Game Informer - 9/10
Far Cry 6 is a compelling open-world action game from the early moments through the final confrontation. The main storyline is exciting, and I never ran into a shortage of side content to enjoy. Far Cry 6 isn’t revolutionary in its accomplishments, but it executes the franchise’s formula better than any entry before it.
IGN - 8/10
Far Cry 6 is some of the most fun I’ve had with this series in nearly a decade. Its cast delivers strong performances across an enjoyable story, even if it’s also a fairly predictable one that doesn’t always land the bigger swings it tries to take. And despite some faltering new inventory mechanics and a handful of bizarre design choices, its creative weaponry means taking down an outpost, ransacking a convoy, or even just taking a ride with a buddy has never felt better.
PC Gamer - 75/100
Yara is super lush and wonderful to explore, but the story and main villain are predictable.
Destructoid - 7.5/10
If Far Cry 3 was the last game you really got into, or the modern Far Cry formula is your meaty open-world experience of choice that somehow never loses its potency, you’ll find a lot of comfort in Far Cry 6. Otherwise, get to it when you get to it, and try not to burn out.
VGC - 2/5
If you’re interested in another Far Cry game that does the Far Cry stuff the way it’s been doing it for 10 years, you’ll probably have a good time, but if you’ve already hit your limit with this kind of game, Far Cry 6 is the ne plus ultra of why open-world game design is so badly in need of a revolution.

Luckily all I wanted was more of the same.
Do reviews even matter for far cry for most people?
I buy it because it’s far cry, and don’t expect it to be something revolutionary.
I just want brainless fun.
I just like getting lost in Far Cry games and exploring the Maps so more of the same is what I want Normally I just do all the side missions and collecting things etc etc to and only bother doing the Story modes when I have to Saying that I really wanted a FC Blood Dragon 2 game to LOVED FC Blood Dragon
I’ll pick it up on sale on Black Friday or Boxing Day or national 50% off Ubisoft games day.
Far Cry 6: still being a Far Cry game
VGC: surprised Pikachu face
I'm currently replaying FC5, so I'm good. I'll probably pick up Far Cry 7 or 8 so as not to get burnt out on the formula.
@tatsumi As someone who's played all instalments since the PC original, I'm burnt out by Far Cry just being "Far Cry"; I'm expecting - more hoping - that the series would involve into something interesting. After the first reveal teaser for 6 I thought, hmm maybe they're going in a different, more narratively engaging direction. But nope it's more tonal inconsistencies and a truck load of filler activities, so I might pass on this one. Each to their own though!
Preordered the Ultimate Edition for the PS5. I absolutely love this series and can’t wait to jump into 6. One of my most anticipated games of the year.
So basically what I expected. Ive enjoyed all the games so far, mainly looking forward to the villain. Theres usually one standout if its not the main one (except in New Dawn, damn those twins were cringe XD)
I'll pick this one up soon but I'm still completely absorbed in Lost Judgment so it has to wait until at least after that. Sounds like it is a good time though.
Will be doing my usual and picking this up on sale.
Since I splashed pre-order cash for Gran Turismo 7, Tiny Tina's Wonderlands, Project Zero Maiden of Black Water and Blue Reflection 2 I think I went a bit overboard on my console spending this month...
I don’t know... Usually I wouldn’t be fussed about another Far Cry game but it feels like ages since the last decent open-world game (excluding the Iki Island expansion and Biomutant). I think the last ‘proper’ one was AC Valhalla, nearly a year ago but I wasn’t crazy about that game. I’m quite looking forward to getting stuck into this.
Far Cry is the gaming equivalent of reasonably tasty fast food that's best eaten once you can buy it for less than the Michelin Star price it's served at at launch.
I'm just here for the blood dragon remaster.
@Hatsune_Miku Sorry if I sound rude but, if you don't part with your cash now for games that are way down the line, then you'll be able to get these new releases?
I don't understand pre-ordering myself, especially when they ask for payment upfront.
As long as it doesn't have the constant waves of random enemies showing up that 5 had. I'll give it a go at a sale price.
I got just for fun element as life has dragged lately plus missed out on blood dragon plus dlc seems interesting
I'm looking forward to some co-op shenanigans with my nephew, should be a good time!
I dont think FarCry needs a drastic change, especially with the way Ubisoft is heading as of late. Its comforting to know some games stick to what works as trying to shake things up can sometimes lead to an inferior experience.
That being said, I'm not against some changes and in fact will welcome them. I think Ubisoft just goes too hard in filling their maps with repetitive content. I'd love to see FarCry take a little bit from Elder Scrolls or Tomb Raider in regards to exploration.
Maybe even have another go at a more fantasy or sci-fi setting. Mixing it up with some Dishonored/Prey/Deathloop mechanics. Actually, I just want to see Arkane tackle something like Elder Scrolls.
I'm really surprised that Ubisoft didn't make a full fledged Blood Dragon style FarCry again.
All in all, I'm ok with FarCry not changing much. I'd appreciate little tweaks here and there and more traversal options. Perhaps a grappling hook usable nearly everywhere?
Just stay away from any multi-player outside of co-op, and for the love of God, don't make a FarCry Battle Royale F2P game.
Gotta love those contrarians giving it a low score to stand out. I'm not exactly a Far Cry fan but you can't deny they're exceptionally made games.
@amenohi
Yeah, FarCry is one of the last great co-op experiences on the market. If they change it too much, my brother and I would be really disappointed.
Right now all we have is FarCry, Dying Light, Gears of War, and for now some of the Tom Clancy games. I expect the latter to no longer be an option for us soon.
Yeah not enough to warrant a full price spending from me. I'm sure it would be fun and the gun customisation looks a lot like Metro Exodus, maybe I'd 2nd playthrough that instead. Feels like I wanna spend my money on eFootball right now.
Is there any point in Game Informer doing reviews or even existing at all at this point? They seem to throw out 9s like candy, and clearly pander to the heavy hitters who throw them exclusive access and lavish parties.
Excited for this! Oddly Far Cry has not been on my radar, although I love open world adventure games. I've only played FC New Dawn and I thought it was tight with great mechanics, and enjoyed the twins chewing on the gorgeous, neon-themed scenery (wish they would bump it to 60fps). I typically wait for a few months so Ubi can polish and I can get the $120 version for like $40, but am very interested to dive into this.
Preordered the game & cannot wait to play it. A lot of reviews are saying that if you like the previous games, that it’s more or less the same. There’ll be alot of people who want more but for me it’s perfect as is.
According to the Eurogamer review, there are a few bugs in it.
Unforgiveable for a full priced game.
Ubisoft eh !
I know everyone is mad because the Far Cry game is another Far Cry game but I'm totally okay with this news and will play this one day when I want to disengage my brain and tick off boxes on a checklist.
I like Far Cry so more Far Cry is ok I guess. Make the most of it though, next one will no doubt be a free to play battle royale.
Far Cry 3 - 10 million sales
Far Cry 4 - 10 million sales
Far Cry 5 - 10 million sales
Far Cry 6 - …
What did Vaas say about insanity again?
Played 4 single player games in a row (Tales, Kena, Lost Judgement, Lost in Random)
This is my Co-Op game with my cousin for the month. "Fun game" and can play the full story campaign with a 2nd player online.
What I need FarCry to be on my list (Looks like it delivered)... Pre-loaded it last night
I'll wait for the obligatory 50% off discount in a month or so.
@themightyant ....very good 😉
VRR can't come soon enough. It's Ubisoft so I am expecting screen tearing deluxe as usual.
I could pick it up on XBSX but I kinda want the DualSense features!
I loved Far Cry ( jeez back in 2004 !) enjoyed 2 & 3 immensely, detested 4 & 5. Yet I know I won't resist buying this in the hope it'll be good. If the enemies take a 1000 bullets to go down without even registering they've been shot ( cough Far Cry 5 cough) then consider it deleted and I'll give it away free on here 😉
Gotta love people saying "I want Fracry to remain Farcry so I get more Farcry" not realizing that if the series itself didn't take risks and reinvent itself, they wouldn't be playing this "model" of the series.
Games need to take risks to evolve and get better. They shouldn't sit on their laurels. Farcry hasn't done anything new or surprising gameplay wise since 3 (that's roughly 5 releases, btw). As a fan, that's inexcusable to me. I won't be buying it until it hits $20 with its DLC. Just not worth it.
@RBMango That's me with every Ubisoft game, because those games all use the same recipe over and over again. Never pay full price for a Ubisoft game.
Yes I want more Far cry, that’s literally why I bought Far cry haha. How gauche are some of these reviewers implying a series being itself is in some way a negative. Next thing you know they’ll be criticising action movies or comedies for doing what they do. Such a cloddish way of thinking. Open world, weird ass animals, some vehicles and a lot of mass destruction? Take my mother f**king money cos I’ll never have enough of this type of open world style game!!!
😊😊😊😊
Downloaded and ready to go!
I'm certainly excited enough for midnight tonight. Every Ubisoft game eventually gets boring, but for me, it takes a good while to get there. Plus, an alligator companion wearing a little vest and a cockfighting mini game? Lol, sold
This is what I wanted to hear. While some games are in need of a change I don't think Far Cry is one of them.
@Elodin sorry to be the bearer of bad news
Skillup’s review said enemies keep respawning all around you 😡
@Gamer_Girl_ that was definitely the most eye catching statement, for me too!
Far cry 3 actually was the last one I played properly, and I enjoyed it, so... maybe I'll swoop on this one in a sale
It currently has a lower review average than Alan Wake Remastered. Surely that means it will score a 5 here, right?
@themightyant Ah but Ubisoft aren't expecting a different result 😉
As long as many continue to pay for these copy and paste reskins, they will continue to make them. Fifa, GTA Online, COD, Battlefield, Red Dead online, most battle royales, are just trash in my opinion, and their continued success is really just a sign of the poor mental state of humanity as a whole.
But hey at least now there is no progression system and instead they made enhancements dependent on gear, just so you get an extra dose of profiteering to come with even more avenues for Ubisoft to hustle you into pointless micro transactions to come
Have fun with that.
@Gamer_Girl_ I thought it was a typo!
Wasn't really expecting anything more. Far Cry 5 left a sour taste in my mouth, but I still enjoy the gameplay loop of the series - so I'll probably get this when it inevitably drops to $15-$20. That way I won't feel like I wasted my money when I (also inevitably) get burned out and stop playing before the end.
More of the same? Suits me.
Just an FYI to anyone on next gen there is a 26gb HD texture pack available from launch
Far Cry 3 was probably the best PS Plus "freebie" I've ever played as I knew nothing about it going into the game and was completely blown away by it.
I wanted Far Cry 4 to be more of the same but somewhere else and that's what we got...but to my surprise I found it a bit of a chore towards the end...formula fatigue...
...I bounced off FC5 after a handful of hours a couple of years ago, so it would seem I would struggle with FC6...I'm in no rush to pick this one up, but good luck to those who have not yet had enough of the formula.
I don't really get how people can sit down and just play basically the same game over and over. Sure there might be a few changes like new characters, maybe a few new weapons...but when the formula is the exact same thing you've been doing since Far Cry 3? Man, I wish I was that easy to please...
So its far cry reviews mainly high numbers so it's fine then and fun
The low reviewers pretty much copy each other about same "problem" it's shoot em up rpg map cleaning, 98% of rpg games at least far cry gets some awesome action scenes and abit of tongue in cheek humour, where be the problem ?
@ATaco it’s the exploration. I’m sure Ubisoft will be upping the ante in the silly stakes again like they seem to most of their franchises. Their games are becoming those ones children take to nowadays, just a heck of a lot more lavish production trick is to forget people even inhabit the world and get lost in the purty wild like a crazed loner on some pointless side quest. That’s always been the meat of the FC series
Meh bargain bin for me. Simply because I don't like the feeling of not completing 100% of a game. And no game makes me get bored with collectibles like Far Cry does. I guess for many others, this is not a problem hence why far cry is always selling well. Which is great for its fans I guess.
I like open world games and Ubisoft are very good at creating vast, beautiful open worlds. Well buying this.
is it me or do the graphics (especially the player models faces) look terrible?
@KundaliniRising333 facts, these games are just all rehashes. its gross. a short beautiful game like Kena Bridge of spirits is more my cup of tea.
@tameshiyaku when’s that supposed to be out?
@kingbreww agree! This series and the just cause and mercenaries series (bring it back NOW!) are my guilty pleasure games. Open word mass destruction ftw!
I got 3, 4, and 5 on the cheap within the last 18 months, so a Gold copy of 6 is on its way to me now...Far Cry helped me through many weeks of lockdown with its brainless action movie fun. At least Unisoft do give us new versions of the same game, instead of making us just drive around Los Santos for eternity.
@Mgene15 they usually do. Some janky business going on too I tend think it’s a trade-off for the environs and scale-of. Also not forgetting the cross-gen shackles are still in effect, not sure I’d expect great leaps next time either however
@CynicalGamer ...you live up to your name 🤣🤣🤣
@KingPev Lol this the nickname my significant other gives me. Must be true somewhat.
Already playing. It looks stunning on PS5 and so far I'm very happy with the game
Far cry 3 is still the GOAT , but i can't believe far cry is at 6!
Just another punch on a old concept for the whole open world experience in video games. Had my fill with Just Cause 4 earlier this year, thank you very much.
@Elodin in this game you can holster your weapon and just walk around without fighting, its badass
@ATaco its not the exact same gimme a break, and you probably play madden or call of duty lmfao
@KundaliniRising333 lmfao, i preordered this 4 months ago, cant ***** wait. Your loss, ill be playing on my ps5 with "65 samsung oled. Sooooo sick
@coltfanjay i agree, ive had this pre-ordered for months, its my most anticipated game of the year by far. I took time off work to play as well, 4 more hours to go.....
@kingbreww these reviewers are ridiculous, pay them no attention. This game is going to be ***** badass, one reviewer just talked about his 3rd world country compared to yara and gave it 2/5. Lmfao
@bbauer36 LOL the game is using an old engine and looks like an early ps4 game. So have fun with that. My PS5 and 65 inch Samsung deserve better.
but each to their own.
ENjoy!
I can’t lie coming from the sophistication of Death Stranding to this feels like I’ve been set back a few generations. Cutscenes look like dogshjt; they don’t merit the cinematic framerate. The silly has already kicked into overdrive I’ve an alligator tearing up enemies with me. Feels like I’ve booted up Free Fire or something, only this cost me 70 quid. Well wanted the same; we got the same nothing has changed….an evolution of silly if that’s any progress……
@bbauer36 The formula is the exact same. Go somewhere, clear it out. Go somewhere else, clear it out. The characters and the weapons might be different but what you're doing is what you've been doing since Far Cry 3. You're a mega fanboy though, so I won't take that away from you. Go play your game, have fun. I don't really care.
I hope everyone enjoys it, I'm sure it's a well made game & will please those who are excited for it.
But I can't just really be any less interested in this. I thought about it maybe being a co-op game to play with my friends but.... I'd maybe get something like Blood Dragon for that, that seems like a ton of fun. I kinda see it like this, I don't get near as much time as I'd like to play games. I've got a ton of games I still want to play and I'd rather spend the time I do get on things I'm 100% all-in on. I hope everyone else loves it though!
If it'd get an injection of hybrid VR when PSVR2 is out, I'd be very interested. Otherwise... no.
@themightyant argh! Why do they ruin a solid game with constant respawns. Guess it have to be a deep sale for when I pick it up. Thanks for the heads up.
@bbauer36 that's a neat idea, hopefully that keeps the enemy from spawning or at least from attacking if your mainly exploring.
Black friday in 6ish weeks.
I don't understand why people think far cry needs to re invent itself or be something far cry is not?
It's not like they are cranking games out yearly like Assassin's Creed used to.
How can you get bored of something you get once every 2 or 3 years. I haven't dug too deep as I had to finish deathloop tonight, but I can't wait for more Far Cry.
That's why I'm buying Far Cry... Because I want more FAR CRY.
@Dishonored29 part of the season pass, but there's no release date attached. I assume it's anywhere between 3-12 months post launch.
@Slippship Far Cry 2 actually wasn't though and before that game, even less. Far Cry 2 was the start of them experimenting with open world and Far Cry 3, in my opinion, perfected it...and then it never continued to innovate after that. Uncharted takes graphical leaps and pushes the hardware with every installment, Sly Cooper stopped precisely because of franchise fatigue, as did Crash Bandicoot, letting the series rest for several years before going back to it's roots, though if that one continues in that way it too will eventually succumb to franchise fatigue again. Ubisoft games typically use the same engine as long as possible, given their relatively short development cycles there's just no time to get anything meaningful done. No advancement. Still though, for some reason people don't seem to get tired of dumping hours and hours into these open world checklist games... they're not as egregious as the cash grabs that are sports games but they're still on a different level to the other games you brought up.
I enjoyed Far Cry 2, loved Far Cry 3, got bored in Far Cry 4 and got half way through Far Cry 5 before stopping. The games just didn't change at all. Plus they are so long and bloated.
They aren't in any way bad games, they play well. I guess you could say that you get value for money in terms of time played. I'm in the minority and I guess it is sort of comfort gaming food but I don't get the fact that the same game is now being released every year or so and sells bucket loads.
I enjoyed Far Cry 5, having not played any since the first two, but I didn't finish NG+ because I was done with the rinse and repeat gameplay. Doubt I'll play another for a few years.
Jesus, the AI is so bad I’ve only gotten on horseback and cars are crashing and mowing me down 🤦 total carnage, you can only try compensate for these shortcomings behind a silly facade so much. And silly as the game is it still doesn’t cut it…
@Slippship yep I'm wrong, so are all the reviews that also say the same thing about Far Cry 6 but yep, I'm the one who's wrong.
Again, have fun with your game. I don't really care.
@Gamer_Girl_
Haha just had the same when i read that!
@ATaco then you should stop gaming cause almost every game is the same and does the same stuff. GTA, Uncharted, mario, racing games, ac, fifa CoD halo almost every game is Repetitive. And that's not going to change for the time being because it makes money.
@TommyNL If you can't tell how significant a leap GTA 4 is compared to GTA 5 then I'm sorry but I will agree with you that ever since GTA Online came out the series has absolutely stalled in favor of making money.
Then again, you telling me that other games are also crap doesn't make Far Cry 6 any less so, so I don't really see your point. Plenty of games still continue to innovate in meaningful ways, though I don't think you're really understanding me when I say that games are different. It's not just about having a new map to play on with new characters and new guns.
@JB_Whiting
Understand your point. Pre-ordering is a disadvantage at that point, I could have like you say not done that and picked up Far Cry 6 straight away but that's just how I work, I prefer to pay for the games in advance and just have them delivered to my console at the time.
There are also sometimes bonuses that you can only get if you do the Pre-Order and payment up front, a catch to make sure they get you into the game/your money early, take Call of Duty Vanguard as the example, free gun skin for Cold War but only if you Pre-Order before release date.
