Right about now, other outlets across games media will be publishing their reviews of the next Ubisoft game, Star Wars Outlaws. We plan to do the same, but we're going to need quite a bit more time before that can happen. While we did receive PS5 review code at the same time as everyone else, assistant editor and Star Wars fan Liam Croft has spent the last 11 days away from his PS5 in Germany, for Gamescom. If only he'd bought a PS Portal!
As such, our Star Wars Outlaws playthrough only began last night. We expect to publish a full PS5 review at some point next week as a result. In the meantime, we will have Guides content to help any of you looking to jump in immediately. If not, feel free to wait until our verdict is live on the site. The open worlder is available tomorrow with the Gold Edition and Ultimate Edition, while the base game launches on Friday.
What do you think of the critical reception so far? Has it convinced you to get the game? Let us know in the comments below.

Couldn't Push Square have given the review code to someone else on the team then?
Looks like it's going to average out a between a 7 or 8 out of 10 based on the reviews so far and I am happy with that.
One of my 10/10 Ubisoft games I have spent hundreds of hours on is Watch Dogs Legion which got a 76 so I feel like my own personal score may be higher.
I do love a bit of Ubisoft open world action once or twice a year as a mixer for stuff like Persona 5, BG3 and Like a Dragon.
@Zeroo Exactly that^
@Zeroo Other members of the team had their hands full already covering other games.
78% on MC so far for PS5 and that's fine by me. Got the Gold version pre-ordered and just waiting until midnight to finally play it
I love most of Ubisoft open world games, so I'll be playing it tomorrow.
The most useless reason every time to write an article about an upcoming game, just drop it when it's done, no need to make a drama about 'where's our .... review' every time.
For the longest time, I had no real interest in this, but this week, am thinking of getting it! Combo of the Autumn nights creeping in and looking for a nice bit of story to play. Will check out a few reviews before deciding, plus its Ubi, so I have absolutely no doubt there'll be a few janky bits that need patching / missions not working
An understandable delay, though fronting late reviews for three high-profile releases in a row isn't the best look.
@Skeletor85 To be fair, people would have asked so it's best to be transparent about it.
I take on board all the feedback, but sadly things just haven't lined up well for us these past few weeks for a variety of different reasons.
Hopefully that's the end of it now.
Meh tons of reviews out already. I’m kinda still interested in it, I loved Watch Dogs Legion.
It looks like the Ubisoft Ubergame but Star Wars now. That will go down fine when I'm in the mood for one, but who knows when that will be? I've been a bit put off by the reviews comparing the missions to RDR2. Seems to be a lot of "you are leaving the mission area, wee-ooh, wee-ooooh." After BotW and TotK, I find it hard to abide by that kind of design.
I'll "rent" it on Ubisoft+.
After what I've seen so far, I'm keeping my expectations very low.
PureXbox, gave it an 8.
I doubt it's going to be as brutal as EG's assessment
Big respect for not asking your staff to crunch for reviews! Will read it whenever it drops
Reviews seem a bit hit and miss.
A good few bugs in the PS5 version said one review.
I must be honest, but does anything else think games lately are just poor overall compared to releases in the PS4 and Xbox one days.
There is no, just released generation to blame, it’s been nearly 4 years now.
Just seems we pay more now but the games are worse than the good quality from last generation.
They apparently nailed the star wars esthetic, and the story is OK enough despite the writing.
Sounds like they really flubbed the combat Traversal and stealth with oversimplification, garbage Ubisoft enemy AI, vastly lower visual npc models and typical repetition boredom that plagues nearly every UBI game due to a lack of depth, despite this being shorter for them. In addition, poor optomization, bugs and possible memory issues. Hard pass.
I've learned that Ubisoft targets the same formula regardless of the skin the game is wearing and it almost always grows stale and remains in a safe generic area. I think they know this as well, as they more than any other major publisher, throw their games on sale soonest after release. For me that has amounted to a never paying full price for their games after having been burnt on not facing this fact and jumping in at full price far too many times.
@KundaliniRising333
At 77 on meta, that’s less than the likes of Starfield as a comparison, 83.
I have to play top quality AAA, so it’s a miss for me.
Next up Astro Bot, very soon.
Obviously you always hope for really high scores with any game you are looking forward to. This hasn't reached that level obviously, sitting at 77 at the time of me typing this, but I'm still really looking forward to my copy arriving tomorrow. It should still be a lot of fun, which is what I expected from Outlaws all along.
@OldGamer999 As someone who identifies as an anything, I agree.
77% on metacritic which mess it's a good game, but unfortunately Visions of Mana and Astro Bot are out within the next two weeks so I won't be getting this until October.
The game is a Solid 6
@Brundleflies21 the negatives Euro gamer sited sounded like plus points in my opinion
@Zeroo thats very unfair, monster jam showdown didn't review itself...🤣
@rusty82 I've no real investment in Star Wars but that review was as scathing as I've read in regards to a geniunely well received title.
At $17 for Ubi+ it makes reviews for Ubi games a bit irrelevant at this point. At that price I rather just try it out for a month and see for myself if good or not.
I think I can start playing it tomorrow at some point.
I like how this is a whole article where Liam is blaming Liam in 3rd person.
I wait for a deep, deep sale.
@LiamCroft Understandable, though perhaps a less traditional approach (e.g. thoughts after 1-2 hours of play with the more substantial review still to follow OR arranging for a guest contributor) might have saved us from yet another “Where’s our review for _____” article? 🙃
It’s not the end of the world, but I know the team is as capable of creative solutions as we are of being patient. It’s a give and take.
Given the influences involved in this, kind of not holding out a lot of hope. Will this be The Acolyte of Star Wars games? 77 on Metacritic right now, with no user scores, for obvious reasons.
Review isn't available yet. Reason: Monke
Removed - unconstructive
Since many of us will be waiting for the price to come down anyway, I'd love to see a little bit longer term review after a week or two of playing it to the end. The short review posted on The Verge today "Star Wars Outlaws is the solution to Ubisoft’s open-world woes" makes it sound like something I'd enjoy. Open world Star Wars yes!
