It’s not yet clear what the future holds for Activision Blizzard and Call of Duty on PlayStation. Sony’s alluded to Microsoft honouring existing contracts, but there’s no word on how long those will last. Meanwhile, talkative Xbox chief Phil Spencer has expressed a “desire” to keep the franchise on the Japanese giant’s formats, but that could be interpreted in a dozen different ways. One recurring sentiment we’ve seen on social media revolves around the possibility of Microsoft’s Xbox Game Pass coming to PS5 and PS4, but Is Such a Thing Even Possible.gif?
From the outset, it’s probably important to stress that the likelihood is extremely low. Considering how often we’ve seen this suggestion pop up, however, it might be worth at least exploring the thought exercise. Remember, the industry has changed beyond recognition in the past five to ten years: crossplay between consoles is now fairly common in major titles, you can play Super Mario on an iPhone, and Sony is releasing flagship franchises like God of War on PC storefronts. Furthermore, you can already login to Xbox Live through Minecraft on a PS4. All of these things seemed similarly impossible up until recently, so you just never know.
The problem is that PlayStation’s entire business model is founded on software royalties. It’s a risky business that Sony’s in, but the rewards are enormous: the company spends obscene sums of money on researching, designing, manufacturing, selling, and crucially marketing hardware like the PS5 at razor-thin margins, in order to then make the big bucks on third-party games, accessories, microtransactions, and subscriptions like PS Plus. That’s the console model in a nutshell.
Allowing a competitor’s service onto its system could seriously undermine its entire business, because if a substantial number of PlayStation players subscribed to it, it would undermine Sony’s own services and effectively allow a large proportion of its income to flow directly to a competitor. Ultimately, the Japanese giant would still have to weather a significant outlay on developing the hardware, without guaranteeing the same royalties in return. That’s a serious problem.
You could, theoretically, argue that this is exactly what happens in, say, iOS’ ecosystem, where Netflix and Disney+ co-exist alongside Apple TV. But this isn’t a like-for-like comparison really – after all, any games included in a hypothetical Xbox Game Pass on PlayStation would have to be ported to the PS5 and PS4 in order to run, so it’s nowhere near as straightforward as streaming a video file. We suppose a limited, cloud-based version running on Microsoft’s xCloud could potentially be more feasible, but may not be as attractive to fans.
Is that something Sony would be interested in, though? Well, it allows EA Play on its consoles, which offers a curated vault of EA software on-demand, so there is some kind of precedent there. The problem is where there’s overlap with third-party releases: Rainbow Six Extraction is available to purchase on the PS Store this week, for example, but is also part of Xbox Game Pass’ offering, so there’s a direct impact on PlayStation’s bottom line right there. Could a more limited offering, just featuring Microsoft first-party games, work?
Well, the question then is would the Team in Green be interested in a scenario like that? It’d expose its service to an entirely new audience which could help to seriously bolster its subscriber numbers, but would undermine its own hardware and ecosystem, so it’d depend just how console agnostic it feels at this stage. The company does offer a similarly curated version of Game Pass on PC, but Microsoft also has a vested interest in Windows, so the compromises make more sense there.
The weird thing is that for all of the caveats we’ve listed out in this article, there probably is a very fine balance that could be struck that would satisfy both parties, so while we maintain that it’s extremely unlikely – it’s absolutely not 100 per cent impossible. It’s worth remembering that for all the ferocity of the console wars that occurs online, Sony and Microsoft still have an agreement at a corporate level to collaborate on Azure-based game streaming initiatives. The boardroom discussions between these two are unlikely to be anywhere near as frosty as what we see on social media.
It’d take compromise and willpower on both sides for this to happen, and we’ll repeat again that it seems highly improbable. But as we said at the top of the article, the same could be said of PlayStation games on PC and crossplay between consoles up until relatively recently. The industry is changing beyond recognition at a rapid rate, and while we may not all be comfortable with it, nothing feels impossible at this point. It’s doubtful, implausible, unlikely, yes, for all of the reasons mentioned above – but all bets are off right now, and very little would surprise us anymore.
What do you think about this topic? Do you think Xbox Game Pass could come to PS5 and PS4, and if so, how do you think Microsoft and Sony would go about striking a deal that’s beneficial to both parties? Is this an inevitability or an impossible scenario? Succumb to the subscription wars in the comments section below.

Well if sony's own version of the gamepass service doesn't end up working out I could see them exploring their options. But even if it manages to go through I wonder what xbox would want in return.
Or as it would be known in my house: "Bethesda Pass"
A special version that only includes a LIMITED number of Microsoft owned only titles could release to the PlayStation. Similar to the EA and Ubisoft subscription. Both companies benefit and if you want the full experience, you have to buy a Xbox or PC.
Sony is not going to let a competing store on its system.
Honestly from my experience with gamepass streaming vs gamepass on console I'd have to say if it comes to playstation it has to have the download to console option as the streaming side isn't fully up to scratch yet compared to stadia etc
Also Microsoft would only allow this once they give up the console hardware division as if gamepass was on playstation there would be no need for an xbox console anymore
If i can play Bethesda games I’d subscribe.
Definitely. I can see a future where a special version of Game Pass comes to PlayStation. They might not have a choice in a few years if Microsoft keeps this acquisition marathon up.
Never. Why should Sony cannibalize themself? It would be the opposite of their current business model which contain heavily on big third party franchises...
It’s completely possible and something big dogs at Xbox obviously want. Therefore they must have a vision of how it would work.
It’ll be an absolute last resort for PlayStation though.
They will launch Project Spartacus and give it a year to see how that pans out: if it doesn’t work out, I’d give it a year after that and we COULD see Game Pass on PS.
That was an interesting read.
I could see Game Pass coming to PS4/PS5, just like any other publisher's streaming service, but maybe not while MS are making consoles.
If xbox left the console space then yes, it would only be a matter of time before Game Pass ends up on PlayStation.
I think it would be like what Sammy says in the article though - Just the first party stuff that's not available on PlayStation.
@Greifchen Didn’t read the article?
I don’t see why Sony would ever do this. What would the revenue split even look like? Sony gets 30% of $15 a month and in return they lose billions a year in sales? I know many people that went with Xbox because of Gamepass, and besides the one or two sports games a year and CoD none of them buy games anymore. I think this would probably happen on PlayStation as well. Maybe people would buy whatever 1st party PlayStation games there are, but everything else would stop selling.I think Sony needs to stick to the current business model or find a way to make their own service sustainable. Also they should just make their own military shooter and Diablo clone.
After thinking about it, I believe it's possible that Microsoft is trying to move away from Xbox hardware and make the brand become a service, streaming or otherwise, like Hulu or Amazon's Luna. Thus, I don't think Microsoft cares that their hardware would be hurt by the service being put on Playstation.
If Sony were to allow Game Pass on Playstation, it could hurt them potentially, but they already did it with EA's version of it.. didn't they? Most don't subscribe too it. Many, including myself still buy EA games physically and Sony gets that cut. Then you have to think... if Game Pass on Playstation would be the only way for Playstation users to play games like Indiana Jones from Bethesda or Call of Duty... it may behoove Sony to allow the service on their platform. It would still attract users that can buy limited consoles and also want the Playstation "exclusives".
Time will tell, but I think it's quite possible that we see the industry move in that direction.
I bet many people aren’t going to read anything but the title and go straight to comment.
@OmegaStriver my thoughts too
Not a snowballs chance in hell; zero chance this will happen . That would mean Sony would give up large chunks of profit to go to Microsoft. Sony would go under. Until ps4 came out Sony were going bankrupt . Don't even know why this ridiculous idea is being discussed
Already have ultimate game pass. It’s amazing. My platform of choice stays the ps5 and switch but my XSX is being used a lot too due to UGP.
In theory? Sure. If Sony wanted to bankrupt themselves by selling loss making / break even hardware and giving MS all of the software profit (minus Microtransaction profits).
Nothing is impossible but it is such a waste of time to consider it as a possibility at this juncture the only reason I can see for doing it is to speculate for speculation's sake, and ultimately there's no benefit to it other than to, to borrow a phrase from Karl Pilkington, 'push bulls*it around the room like dung beatles'.
There's so much we dont know, there's so much that could happen, there's such little apparent incentive for Sony to allow a direct rival's central core tenet a presence on their platform, like a cuckoo in it's nest; there's PSVR2 and an alternative future for gaming Sony can continue to nuture and develop into revolutionising how we game. There are so many variables and things to consider, and not even a week has passed since MS announced they are acquiring Activision which isn't even a done deal and is yet to pass scrutiny, talking about if Sony will allow GP on PS5 is like turning left at every junction you come across as you try to drive home from work.
Having said that let's do this...😆
Why does Sony even need to think about GP in the first place? Has anyone ever asked the question will Nintendo host GP? What's so good about GP anyway that Sony need to offer it? PSNow has more games and can be improved further. PS has more, better and varied exclusives. Sony has VR. Sony invests in risk-taking with games like Death Stranding. Why are we seeing what MS has done as some kind of killer move. I see it as practically an admission that they are worried by Sony and their catalogue and have had to do something outrageous to compete, and even then all they've done is gone for the lowest hanging fruit buy aiming for the CoD crowd to boost their ecosystem.
Sony are in the strongest position they've ever been since PS2. On the back of the hugely successful PS4 they've tried to diversify into the future of gaming with VR and are determined to back it up and believe in it. They delivered a console that also brings fresh innovation to compliment their philosophy, they're a financing loads of new and exciting IP, the lifeblood of the industry. Nintendo is still relevant because it understands the power of recognisable, beloved IP and a unique platform to play it on. Sony is doing the same, especially with PSVR.
So for me Sony doesn't need GP. It's MS who needs GP available on as many platforms as possible because their end game isn't to R&D interesting, revolutionary consoles and devices to push the boundaries of gaming and offer gamers new experiences but to lock us all into GP and let others do the heavy lifting and dream big.
Microsoft's product this gen is gamepass, the series x/s exist to showcase it. If they openly stated they want to bring it to Playstation they'll have backed Sony into a corner, plenty of PS gamers would be furious if they turned it down. Once they've hooked most of the market you can guarantee all the ridiculous deals they are always offering on the price of subscription will vanish.
If they can come to an agreement that profitable to both parties.
I think it will be similar to EA Play in that you can only use it on PlayStation if you’ve bought it through PlayStation.
There certainly not going to allow people with subscriptions acquired elsewhere to play games on PlayStation.
Not interested in Gamepass, but if it brings Forza Horizon to PS5 as a separate purchase, I wouldn't mind.
Also depends on the cut sony get, if there's people playing third party games on the gamepass that's on playstation then surely sony are losing out on those third party game sales as well.
Sony need to say, you can bring gamepass to playstation but it can't include any games that are already on playstation. So basically only Microsofts first party games would be included
@UltimateOtaku91 and if they get a cut, maybe 30%or more on the subscription, and force them to release all games separately also.
As a streaming service, sure.
Do I think there is any scenario where Microsoft has its teams focus on developing ports of their first-party games for Playstation consoles so the games can run natively? Not at all.
I can’t see this happening, ever tbh. But even if Gamepass was on PS4/5 right now, I probably wouldn’t subscribe for more than a single month per year (if that). I’ve already played most of the older games and Xbox exclusives have never really interested me (Sunset Overdrive being the exception). I played the Halo Masterchef Edition when I had an XB1 and didn’t know what all the fuss was about. Not into racing games (on any platform) so Forza gets a pass too. What else is there? Gears? Haven’t played those but I don’t feel like I’m missing out. Gamepass is a steal for new gamers but I just wouldn’t find any value in it myself.
Sony definitely does not want it but Phil Spencer is making all the moves to leave them with no choice but to accept it... If it comes down to allow game pass on Playstation or lose a huge chunk of their market share they'll go with gamepass
I hate that this seems like what the future of gaming is going to be . I can not stress this enough Game pass is going to kill the industry period . The early days right now are going to seem amazing sure wicked I get all these games for next to nothing cool. It's the long term we should be worried about . What happens when the dust settles and every thing has been bought up , there's no more competition everything is under one umbrella. That's when you start seeing the weaker games start coming out cause to keep the service worth wile there has to be a steady flow of meaningful games . Then comes the price hikes . And at that point we'll have no choice to pay the subscription becuse it would have forced physical games to be so much more expensive becuse fewer people are buying it ,that's also assuming any one is even printing disks anymore.
I get ***** expensive and not every one can afford to buy every game that comes out but if this is the ulternative I rather miss out on a few games here and there then have the entire market be an other streaming service .
@Machines Yup, I’m correct, look at some of these comments. You know they didn’t read the article.
I see this as a possibility in the next 5 to 10 years as Microsoft transition away from the xbox brand - game pass is their future.
If they snap up the likes of EA, Ubisoft etc, a compromise that allows Sony to keep some of those franchises on playstation feels like an inevitability if they intend to stay in the gaming business (and why wouldnt they. The Activision deal alone shows how big the gaming industry has become)
Honestly, if Microsoft allowed all of their first party titles including Halo and Gears on a Playstation Game Pass subscription, I would definitely sub to it.
Besides, I have PC Game Pass already, so adding in an extra $5 to allow me to play them on PS5 is worth it.
Honestly, if Sony can come up with a similar Gamepass where you get all the new games and such for a monthly fee, they will wipe MS out with money.
I wouldn't mind seeing MS Gamepass on PS just because we gamers could access any MS exclusives as well, but let's be honest, Sony has the best lineup of games, so they shouldn't feel like allowing Gamepass will eat into their profits. This might also cause MS to exit the console market allowing for PC and PS only since you can do everything on both.
How many here buy both consoles to play all the games anyway? I personally don't anymore because Xbox/PS are the same with minor differences, and PS has beaten them the last 3 generations, so I've been sticking with PS with no regrets. There are literally no Xbox games I'm interested in atm, but that might change when Elder Scrolls 6 releases.
Sick of reading about game pass, but my two penneth worth, maybe a 'PS game pass' featuring only games that are not cross party, and you have to subscribe to both PS plus and this to access them. Sony doesn't lose revenue, MS makes more.
Game Pass could come to PS - especially if/when Sony may want to put their Subscription service on Xbox. It doesn't have too much of a 'negative' impact on their sales because if you want to be able to download and play those games 'locally' on the hardware they were developed for, then you'll need to buy 'their' platform.
If Game Pass came to PS5, they are NOT going to 'port' their games to run natively so you'll have to stream at 1080/60 - good enough to play the game but 'not' the best console to play on - Series S may even be better at upto 1440p/120. If Spartacus is on Series S/X, those games will have to be streamed and only 1080/60 so if you want to play H:FW, GT7, GoW, Spider-Man etc at upto '4k/120', then you'll have to buy a PS.
It may just start out with a curated list (no Halo, Forza, Gears but maybe will get ES6, Outer Worlds 2, Hellblade 2, Doom, Wolfenstein etc) and same with 'Sony's Spartacus for Xbox' - just those exclusives that are on PC (Days Gone, H:ZD, GoW etc) Sony could still keep their 'big' games Exclusive to PS5 for 6months to give themselves a 6month selling window before they come to Spartacus and/or PC
I can see a day when this happens - even if it seems impossible because historically that's how things have been. I'd never thought I'd see Sonic on a Nintendo and definitely 'never' in the same Game...
If Game Pass came to PS5, then yes I'd subscribe (probably already will have access as a Game Pass Ultimate subscriber) and if Sony had a Game Pass competitor on Xbox with 'similar' value, I'd Subscribe too.
It wouldn't necessarily be to play 'Xbox' on PS or PS on Xbox (although great for ALL those who only want/have 1 console - not force them to have to buy both or miss out), It would be for the 'benefits' this services offer. Maybe if I'm on PS5, I might 'stream' something from Game Pass - but much more likely to play GP on Xbox and Spartacus on PS5...
I think that while Microsoft have a rival console, this won't happen.
When Microsoft move out of the hardware space and are entirely a games subscription service, it's an inevitability.
Sony would be happy with a world where they host subscription services alongside the incredible first party titles they produce. And Microsoft get to grow their subscription service massively. Win-win.
I don’t see this ever happening for obvious reasons, Sony’s eventually going to unveil its own new subscription service. Allowing Game Pass on PlayStation would be a direct competitor and could potentially lose a lot of subscribers that go to GP instead of “Spartacus” and I really don’t see it matching GP’s value and offerings.
If this ever did happen then PlayStation owners would benefit the most by having the best of both worlds, having Xbox exclusives day one on their own PS4 and PS5.
Personally I don't want the future to be GaaS, GamePass or fully controlled by Microsoft. At the moment while I'm worried who MS will buy next they don't currently have anything I am scared to lose.
Sitting here right now playing Mass Effect LE reminds me of how good BioWare is/was. ME, Dragon Age and SW KotOR. Better imo than anything Bethesda have produced and today reminded me of that.
Sega, Capcom, Konami and Square Enix on the other hand. If we lose them to MS then I think it'll be all over for Sony and they will have no choice but to bow to MS' future 'vision'.
As it stands though IF and that's a big if GP arrives on PS4/5 the only way I see Sony allowing it is if it was first parties only. Leave third parties to be bought as normal on PS for their profit margin.
Playing Halo on PS though would be kind of funny ngl.
I find the suggestion of Game Pass on a Sony console quite ridiculous, how the acquisition of Activision has prompted the internet to explode with this theory is bizarre.
It'll never happen.
@Ralizah
Honestly the Series and PS5 are so similar at the hardware level that porting the games would be simple.
The only work that really has to be done is the different API environment. Xbox games use Direct X while PlayStation titles commonly use Vulcan.
But if Sony allowed it, there’s nothing about the PS5’s hardware that forbids utilizing Direct X APIs for developers. It’s an x86-64 machine at its heart. The PS5 and Xbox Series are basically two different implementations of the same hardware.
It’s the APIs where things are drastically different. But that could be easily mitigated.
Sammy, bloody hell. You guys are pushing your editorial skills on this Activision takeover...pulling out all the stops to grab a article...
As for your question. It's very possible. Remember when the industry and gamers believed that Sega and Nintendo would ever release games on each others systems?
As for Gamepass on PlayStation, I could see a condensed implementation where Sony allows Microsoft’s 1st party library but forbids 3rd party multiplatform games. That would actually work out in Sony’s favor. Gamers tempted to leave the nest for Xbox exclusives would just sign up for PS Gamepass. They’d still get the cut from multiplatform games.
The issue in that deal is what does Microsoft stand to gain beyond extra subscribers for this condensed version of Gamepass? I feel like Sony would need to throw Microsoft something. Maybe a multiplayer AAA title like a revived Killzone that would release on every version of Gamepass?
@GADG3Tx87 Sega,Capcom,Konami and Square have a history of great IPs but are far from the development teams they once were....The Japanese gaming scene is nowhere near what it was. They once pioneered gaming, along with some European studios.... Nowadays it's alot of same old American hyper money releases...some good, but most offer nothing fresh or original.
Game pass at $15 a month is a loss leader! There is no margin to pay Sony for having Microsoft games on PlayStation. I am sure many people on XBox now subscribe to game pass only when a new game comes along and cancel at the end of the month then wait for the next new title to release.
@Mezzer
I know Konami has pretty much vanished for the sake on Pachinko machines but I would love to see Metal Gear Solid and Silent Hill rebooted with love and care.
Resident Evil after 7 and Village have started to pick up again and I would love a Dino Crisis reboot.
Sega. I couldn't bear losing Persona and Yakuza. Two of my most favourite franchises ever.
And Square Enix. It's just that FF has a lot of love in the industry in general and attracts a lot of people. Particularly from Japan
That's why I personally, care most for them. And TBH while EA is pretty much scum of the earth for MTX and buyouts, MS is slowly heading in that direction.
That being said I'd love a Mercenaries reboot. And keep BioWare competing with Bethesda.
"Ultimately, the Japanese giant would still have to weather a significant outlay on developing the hardware, without guaranteeing the same royalties in return."
Unless Sony got a cut of the subscription. It still may not be worth it to them, but getting, say, 30-40% of the money from 25 million subscribers might be attractive to them.
I'm pretty sure it will come to PS5. I just think it'll be Xbox first party games only so Sony can sell all the other games like normal. It would be a good move for both parties, I think.
As a consumer: Please don't. I prefer the Premium culture Sony has over the Freemium MS has.
As being a sony head: They have Spartacus. I don't believe this will happen. It will affect third party sales. Like no, it's impossible. It's saying we lost.
@OmegaStriver
That's how I'd see it happening. It's essentially just Game Pass for Xbox Game Studios developed games. That way Sony can still make money off their exclusives and 3rd party games while having access to Xbox owned franchises.
Xbox could still benefit on their home consoles too with exclusive perks and full access to 1st as well as 3rd party games. Heck maybe they cut a deal to get some PS exclusives on the service after they have sold all they can on PS.
It's an interesting thought that's really not that hard to imagine happening. No one ever thought Activision would sell but here we are.
PlayStation's version of game pass on Xbox. Xbox game pass on playstation. Both sides win. Digital only on each competing console but able to install natively with the option of streaming. Want the disc buy the other console. Maybe limit subscriptions of the competing console to only one console at a time and each user on a single console has to purchase game pass for access to the other console's games.
If it did happen I’d imagine it would be post PS5 tbh. Given the current split in models it’s odds on that this will be the last gen with a disc drive, so that combined with PS Now and the PS/MS cloud agreement suggests steaming will play a significantly bigger roll next gen. In this light PS compatibility with Gamepass might be a non-issue.
I also think it’s highly unlikely Sony haven’t been aware of MS’s Activision intentions for some time. These things just don’t occur in a vacuum. So they’ll have been planning a response for a while, which is perhaps partly behind the move to get exclusives into PCs, along with leveraging their IPs in other media (Uncharted movie and TLOU show etc).
Here is how it could work
Sony gets its own tailored version of game pass wherein the only games that come to it are Xbox 1st party games. In addition, those games are sold in the PS Store so Sony can make money on the games if people do not wish to subscribe to Xbox. They will never go on sale. Finally, Sony 1st party games will phase into production on a more often than not basis to come to PC and possibly Xbox storefronts.
This Game pass version will still be $15 a month.
Microsoft then stops trying to compete on a hardware level and releases an Xbox series S style console every few years.
It might happen if Sony can convince Microsoft to only bring their first-party content to the platform. Whether or not that happens is a completely different story.
No, not a chance, maybe in some very remote future. Would I subscribe? You bet.
If PS5 had game pass, I’d probably go back to having just one console.
I don’t think it’ll happen and It does seem like a no brainer for both companies, but I don’t think either really want to. I guess it all comes down to what Microsofts intentions are. They’ve said in the past they don’t believe in exclusives but that was followed by a buyout of Bethesda and an announcement of Starfield being exclusive. But if they really do want to just be everywhere people play games I don’t believe Sony would stop them from publishing any of their games on PlayStation consoles if that’s what Microsoft wanted. Also If you put gamepass, which is definitely operating at a loss on PlayStation you instantly have access to 100 million+ players but also hand Sony the one system that can play both big publishers titles and even less of a reason to buy a physical Xbox. That being said I would definitely use it to play Microsoft first party games.
@Otherbarry
I think you have one point there.
Halo Infinite is an unfinished but good game and Forza turned out to be amazing. Starfield might be good too. That quality could change because gamepass subs will cap at a unsustainable number. This is my educated speculation.
PS plus barely reaches 50M and you need that to play multiplayer games.
Which is more important? Xbox live or Gamepass? If you could choose one.
Once they see gamepass stop growing (maybe 1 extra million per year) and have peaked, an lets be honest, MS funnily thinks there are 2 billion gamers but it's really the same pool of gamers from console and pc they are aiming for with this service.
How is gamepass/xcloud split between mobile, pc and xbox? They never release those numbers (if they have, somebody link and tell me).
They got 8 million more subs in a year. If they get another 8 million, that's good, but if they get 5 from 2022 to 2023, then 3 in 2024, then 2. That won't be enough for 30 plus studios and third party deals.
The quality of the games or how monetized they are will have to change. I no longer play mobile games for this reason. I think Sony is better off being premium over freemium.
Halo didn't even popped in the top 20 games NPD wise. Forza did, at number 20, which is the better received game, but we will stop seeing MS games on NPD numbers and idk if sub money is enough. Unless they jack up the price for $300 a year or something like that.
Which is a nice question to ask. Would you pay for gamepass if it was $200 with all these games? What would be your limit?
Sure, nothing is off the table at this point. But the more I've thought about it the less I think it will happen. Sony will probably just double down on their third party exclusives and first party output.
Does Amazon put their shows on Netflix just because its the more popular service? There's no way it would work, MS already takes massive losses with GP and splits money with EA since their crappy basic service is part of it. So MS splits more revenue to get it on PS and then what? It's going to take half the planet subscribing to actually make money? And then in a few years when MS realizes that there really is not a billion people that will subscribe to their service and its still not making money what do they do with all these developers/publishers?
It's just more consolidation and throwing money around to pay to win the industry. It would basically be Sony bending over backwards and letting MS have their way with them while Sony is the one who's became market leader by making great games and letting the consumers decide. If GP starts eating into Sony's revenue/profit then they're just going to pull the same type of service. Games will suffer though and there will be less complete single player and even multiplayer games launched. Like Spencer said it will be about making money from the back end of games.
@BamBamBaklava89 See them saying they don't believe in exclusives and then buying them out... makes me think that their strategy all along was this...
"Ok Sony has us beat on a lot of stuff. They make great games that we simply cannot compete. What do we have that they don't? $$$."
At that point their strategy became to slowly position themselves to be the Netflix of video games and eventually bring that app to everything that could play games. Which would include PS hardware.
In short - I think their statements and purchases when pushed together make complete sense if putting Game pass on Sony systems was always the goal.
Sony would do their own version of gamepass lightyears before they even whispered this in a board meeting.
Article gets it exactly right, Sony’s entire model is based on software and subscription services. Gamepass would eat into their bottom line tremendously and Microsoft would have to give them a post 50/50 deal to even start this conversation.
The idea people have that this is coming or should be makes no sense UNLESS Microsoft pins Sony down so hard in the future that they have to allow it on PlayStation platforms to survive.
@Uncharted2007 You're absolutely right when mentioning EA Play.
I mean PS Video (is that still a thing?) isn't the only way to watch movies on a Playstation platform, allowing rivals like Now, Netflix, Disney+ & Prime to have an app on their system so why couldn't M$ offer a Gamepass for the PS consoles.
If people want it, they can subscribe and Sony won't be losing that much money as I guess most subs would be to allow gamers to play games that suddenly have been pulled from the PS ecosystem - if not, then it's no skin off Sony's nose but M$ will have to get their studios to build PS versions of the games.
Xbox game pass on playstation would be interesting and playstation now on xbox would be interesting as well.
I'm all for it. Also get all of ps now on xbox. The idea is that these services appear in as many places as possible, so why not. It's no different than having EA vault or whatver it's called on a system. It's heading to being only a store front/os/launcher anyway so why not.
Id subscribe day one on Playstation if I could earn trophies through playing on GamePass.
People don't seem to understand what Microsoft is doing (at scale). They are, with few exceptions, removing themselves from the hardware game. It is not as profitable for them as their services are. Across the board.
What few pieces of hardware they manufacture are, at best, test cases for what they see as the "prime" hardware to deliver their services. They're little experiments, essentially. They'll continue to make tablets, laptops, Xboxes, and a few other devices. They'll quell that manufacturing urge within their ranks. But hardware is not their end goal. Never really was. Software services are.
Not only that, but they are getting out of bespoke software delivery. From Game Pass to Office 365, they are becoming a provider of service(s) and content, above all else.
The Bethesda and Activision purchases are nothing more than a bolstering of one of their best (and most promising) services. They do not actually care WHAT device you access their services on (they've said this repeatedly), they just want you to pay them to do so.
I believe it is only a matter of time before they cede the gaming hardware game to Nintendo and Sony. Switch continues to sell like gangbusters globally. Sony can't produce enough PS5 hardware to satisfy demand. All during a global chip shortage. The Xbox Series systems are Microsoft's fastest sellers of all time. BUT DESPITE doing so well for itself, Sony is still set to sell 2 PS5s for every Series system this coming year (let alone what Switch will sell). They can't catch a break (in hardware sales), but they don't NEED to. Game Pass subs are delivering fantastic titles to a multitude of devices, for a (relatively) low monthly rate and they're raking in cash hand over fist.
I believe their play is to make as many moves as they can to get Game Pass on PS5 (and Switch). They will shift their ENTIRE software experience away from their bespoke hardware and essentially become a third party publisher, with Game Pass as their crown jewel. The Series systems may be their last dedicated game hardware devices (save for a streaming stick, which I believe is an inevitability). Halo and Forza on a Sony system (or a Nintendo one)? It's only a matter of time. They can't win if they keep their ever-growing collection of software on PC and their own hardware. The sales of their systems don't justify it. BUT, if they work with Sony (and Nintendo) to deliver their content (and subscriptions) to their "competing" hardware, Game Pass subs will continue to balloon and return larger stacks of sweet sweet cashola. THAT is their move. You don't have to look hard to see it, but if you keep the "console wars" blinders on, you'll miss it. But it's right there. They've been showing us their hand for a while now.
There is no way on earth GamePass would come to PlayStation.
If Microsoft quits the hardware/console production and becomes service only (for gaming) I could see it happening, if it benefits both companies.
That's probably some years in the future though.
Actually, the more I think about it, this ABSOLUTELY should happen.
Take netflix. People were initially chuffed with this service because it had all the benefits of live tv, but without the ads and everything else that came with it, you could pick up and leave it as you wish and come back to it. It had decent shows and people were generally happy. Then another streaming service came along and took away some of the appeal. Then another, and another, and eventually people that were initially thrilled at the idea of cutting the cable of tv, now had the same problem they had in having to subscribe to too many options to get all the shows they want.
This is a similar thing. There's now way too many choices for streaming content (gamepass, now, ubi+, ea vault, etc), so why not tryto get the boys to play nice and consolidate all that and benefit everyone.
I don't want that cr@p on my PS5 thanks :-/ It would be the same as putting a cr@ppy Mobile phone games App store on the PS5 with throwaway games. Er NO thanks. I have deleted it off my PS5 already(in my mind anyway)
In theory, yes of course, however I would be shocked to see it happen. I think you've got more chance of winning the lottery than seeing Game Pass on PS.
@get2sammyb For crying out loud, guys. Did someone put something in your soda?
First the nonsense about the meanings of 1.23, and now we have this>>
"a “desire” to keep the franchise on the Japanese giant’s formats, but that could be interpreted in a dozen different ways."
Yes. According to my interpretation, as interpretations can now have a Multiverse of meanings, I'd say "Japanese Giant" refers to a bleedin' Kaiju.
Can we just stick to sane news and rumours that have some trustworthy source and evidence based reasoning.
@nathanSF Eh? I'm not sure what your issue is with this particular article to be honest. There's a lot of people discussing this on forums and social media, and the article exists to discuss the feasibility of it all.
We've written Talking Points like this for over ten years.
I think if GamePass ended anywhere it would more likely be on a more powerful Nintendo Switch as it would tick the box of gaming on the go. I know you can game on the go with Xcloud but tbh it’s not that great in the UK unless you have decent 5G and it’s not even worth the hassle on a long train journey - in the UK certainly. GamePass on PS could happen - anything ‘could’ happen of course but it would essentially mean Sony and MS advertising each other at the same time. The amount of variables from all of this are endless and potentially limitless.
@Integrity very well said
@Integrity I agree with a lot of your points. Sony's investment in VR is admirable, the technology has the potential to revolutionise gaming in much the same way the move from 2d to 3d did. It is definitely pushing the envelope for gaming as a medium and is a technology unique to Sony in the console market. Unfortunately VR still has issues with accessibility - 3d televisions are largely attributed to have failed due to the requirements of wearing glasses which were perceived by the mass market as expensive and an inconvenience Vs 2d content viewing. VR has this same issue Vs 2d gaming, only on a greater scale. Secondly, VR sickness is a very real and problematic byproduct of the technology and can be experienced at various levels by a significant proportion of users. This issue is still something that has yet to be properly addressed and solved. The resolution of these two key issues will be key in this technology becoming mass market (like current consoles) and therefore generating the revenue and profit required to ensure future investment from shareholders. If psvr2 fails to have a large enough impact on the playstation business Vs its traditional approach I doubt we will see a psvr3 any time soon.
Secondly, while Sony have, in the past, invested heavily in new IP they now seem to be focused on sequels and remakes. PS5 has had one new IP, Returnal, since launch with the Demons Souls remake and sequels (miles moreles, ratchet and clank) making up the rest of their lineup. This year we are getting three more sequels with horizon, gran turismo and God of war and another uncharted rerelease. It's also been confirmed that we will be getting a ghosts of Tsushima sequel from sucker punch, spider man 2 from insomniac, and it is heavily rumoured that naughty dog are working on a last of us remake.
In terms of whether or not gamepass or similar subscription services are going to be the future of the video game industry, who knows? I would, however, be inclined to look at the current evolution of the film and television media markets. In particular, with regards to their transition from physical media to digital, and live content to subscription services. The market has embraced the licensing of content over physical ownership. The same is true of music in terms of physical media to MP3 and iTunes, followed by Spotify, apple music and other subscription services. Video games have already followed suit in terms of digital sales now surpassing physical, I would not be surprised to see them also move towards a subscription model of content consumption. Particularly in the field of the mass market.
@STOBO thank you kindly
@Neither_scene good points about the other forms of media being within their longterm plans. As for their future gaming IP releases being heavily weighted towards sequels, well Sony can afford to do that in as far as they've earned the ability to. There's a lot of goodwill from gamers towards the franchises you've mentioned, many of them are well-loved and people are still hungry enough to see more of them without feeling jaded by it.
I think the majority of new IP this year will be in the form of PSVR2 games and that's understandable. And let's face it, Nintendo has made thrived for decades on delivering familiar exclusives time and time again keeping them fresh by adding new ways to play them or reinventing them so the tactic works 😊
No it wont as sony wont allows it. Sony like to make all the money
It's unlikely, but you never know. If it would come, I wouldn't subscribe. I like to make my own collection. Gamepass feels too much like a glorified demo service to me. I might sub for a month to play some games that are otherwise unavailable.
@get2sammyb yes, all you say is true but on this matter of XBox to PS5. Quite simply, it's an absurd proposition not worthy of consideration by any serious outlet.
The entire article is null. We already know it'll never happen. So to spend time interrogating the proposition is a complete waste. It's on the level of, "Will Sony ever manufacture a fully functional, yet edible controller?" Sure, one could analyse the potential elements and processes just as one could argue the possibility of any scenario but like XBox Game Pass to Sony, some could be totally redundant from the start
Microsoft buying Activision Blizzard seems to have kicked off a storm of bizarre speculations.
PushSquare is my first and go-to site, one that I visit every day. Recently I've started to see some bizarre considerations here. Okay, there's a demand to keep things fresh here, I understand that, but there are good minds here and it's a shame to see them wasted on fruitless subjects
@Integrity 100% agree
I'm extremely skeptical of Game Pass ever coming to PS4/PS5, but if it did?
Hell yes I'd subscribe day one if it was the only way to play new Bethesda and Activision/Blizzard games on PlayStation.
Preferably with the option to download games, my internet is good but streaming can still be laggy.
@get2sammyb his point is that of late push square has become very good at publishing a lot of click bait articles..a while ago there was a poll asking readers what would they expect from push square and a large majority spoke out about the "click bait" articles and how they would like them to cease..you guys obviously completey ignored the requests because all you have done since the activision buy out is put out articles about how its going to affect sony in the long run..now yes it needs to be reported on but maybe you could try and be a little bit more sensitive and acknowledge that some people are a bit worried about the future of their chosen platform and also realise most people are sick of hearing about it..can you try to report on anything other than microsoft, activision and game pass please?
isn't sony working with Microsoft with their cloud tech?
I don't think it will happen. If Sony allows GamePass on PlayStation, it would be like admitting defeat for their own service. They will certainly not want us to have a taste of it from their platform and then switch to GamePass elsewhere. And I'm betting they will not want us logging into Xbox Live either as long as we have a PSN account
If it was to happen, I think it would only be a small streaming version that allows Bethesda and Activision games but nothing else. And it would have to be bundled into Sonys own service. All third party things would be done in their own service.
If people were to rise up and demand it for those games, they could end up folding and allow it on, just like it took them so long to allow EA Play. But as long as we are happy with their service and don't need them games, I don't see them allowing it at all so they will refuse for as long as they can.
If Sony would get game pass on their consoles they can just as well sell PlayStation to Microsoft. They would make themselves completely dependent from Microsoft. Lose all third party franchises to Microsoft. Before you know it they would force PlayStation to release their first party games on Game Pass as well and who would buy their consoles anymore. When they lose the hardware they lose everything.
Lol to all the clickbait article comments… we are all here reading them aren’t we? Are you not satisfied? Keep it up pushsquare I’m certainly reading them and enjoy the comments to get a read of the room.
Anyway, back to the article. The latest press releases from Microsoft is interesting as there’s not much use of the word Xbox it’s all Microsoft Gaming. Seems to me they are shifting from the hardware to more of a service provider. I think it is WAY too early to tell as they will take some time to phase out the hardware end of their business but it seems to me that is the way it’s moving.
I think the biggest thing this article forgets to mention is the potential overlap between Playstation owners and Game Pass subscribers. If there is a considerable overlap between the two, then Sony doesn't really lose out on anything seeing as how a non-insignigicant portion of their customer base may already be subscribed to Game Pass.
In theory, because Game Pass games also offer discounts on the games themselves and the DLC, it could generate more revenue on top of their existing PS Plus and Now subscriptions.
No sense in making a game pass clone. They already have ps now. The issue with streaming services is now everyone wants their own. Microsoft and Sony could work together and make game pass even better. Get Nintendo in on it too and have them all share in the money. Best bet for consumers is being able to play what ever we want where ever we want how ever we want. Make a unity between the big three so the gamers don’t splinter even more.
It'd be no different than ea play being on ps. But who gets what. Does Sony get paid for having ea play/gamepass on ps? I don't see why ps would pay for a competitor's service. Not everyone would use it, digital and physical sales, would still occur.
@Ralizah this is the simplest and correct answer.
I think its inevitable that Microsoft will force Sony to accept an EA Play style version of Game Pass.
Here is how I think a PS5/PS4 Game Pass would look:
▪️ It would only include Microsoft owned games, not titles like Rainbow Six: Extraction.
▪️ It would only include traditionally multi-platform titles (Minecraft, Call of Duty, Elder Scrolls, not Halo, Gears of War oir Forza, and likely some new big IPs will be retained XBox/PC exclusive.)
▪️ It would not be the only way to play the games, you would still be able to buy Call of Duty on PS5, but it will likely be a requirement for Microsoft to develop a PS5 version of the games at all.
▪️ It would likely be only a cheaper separate plan Game Pass PS5 for $9.99 a month, maybe it will be part of Game Pass Ultimate.
@Filth_Element good point..cool avatar to boot..
@MFTWrecks “…But hardware is not their end goal. Never really was. Software services are.”
Of all the chatter I’ve seen and heard over the last few days, this is the most bang-on statement I’ve read. This is the direction things have been moving for a while. I enjoyed reading your comment. Cheers!
It seems unlikely right now but I’m old enough to remember when Sony and MS didn’t even make Consoles. Don’t rule anything out. If both sides can make the financials work, it can happen.
i heard rumor of this months ago. even if it happened, i wouldnt buy gamepass. ever. M$ is very evil and will never get any more money from me. i switched over to using linux a few years back and also switched from xbox 360 to playstation brand in 2013. it'd ruin gaming. gamers see it as some wonderful thing to pay a yearly fee to play ANY game. but they'll all be digital.. and did anyone have the discussion yet of how much money devs make digitally compared to physical sales? one dev said, i recall reading, they're LOSING money by going all digital.
"they" own the movies, the music, the comic books.. now they're coming for the games. dont think so? then why are we seeing "woke" galore in games now?
lets pray gaming doesnt go the mobile route in terms of mostly indie garbage with unlimited micros and even ads u gotta watch. because right now, gaming, even on console, is becoming chock fulla micros and "dlc" and gambling mechanics. the dashboard areas for xbox AND playstation have a LOT of ads lately. wait until they put'em in-game down the road. even if just on the main menu of a game.
gamers still dont see.. this isnt about gaming.. gamepass. this is a takeover possibly and the end result will be dire for gaming.
@twitchtvpat right... which is utterly stupid... nintendo may even use their servers, i dunno. but i do know sony invented bluray, and M$ has to pay fees to put bluray drives in their consoles.
I would honestly prefer Sony have their own service. As someone who owns both consoles, then I could invest in both services without feeling like I"m paying for a lot of overlapping third party titles. If MS kept theirs to themselves and Sony did the same, it would maximize the value for both (imo).
@Jimmer-jammer Thanks.
What people also miss is that Game Pass on Sony systems, in the long run, probably isn't a huge problem. NOT letting it on PS systems is likely the larger problem.
Not getting the bespoke sales of CoD and all these now-Microsoft-owned IP will hurt. But it will hurt A LOT less if they let GP on PSN, get a cut of any subs from PS players, and still get a cut from any microtransactions and Battle Pass-like purchases in any of the software sold for GP titles on PSN. (I'm not sure anyone knows how this works yet, as GP isn't yet on a third party platform, but if Sony's demands about Fortnite revenues are any indication, they'll demand a cut of sales for DLC and microtransactions sold for titles on GP).
At least it's SOMETHING. And in business, some dollars is a lot better than no dollars.
As long as Microsoft agrees to Sony's standard cut of revenues for services sold through PSN and doesn't demand some crazy cut, I can't imagine Sony brass can justify to their shareholders why they'd deny the service once it encompasses such massive IPs as CoD and Halo. How could they NOT want a cut of Halo and Forza and Gears players' revenues (and Elder Scrolls and Doom and Crash Bandicoot and...)? ESPECIALLY if Game Pass becomes the ONLY way for PS players to access IPs like CoD and Elder Scrolls and the like going forward. The leaders will be removed. Plain and simple.
It's inevitable. Mark my words.
MS constantly says that they want people to enjoy gamepass on anything so maybe this is something they want to look at in the future but Sony won't do it if it hurts thier bottom line too much. I like the idea of having a dedicated Gamepass app though and being able to access Bethesda games ect. I feel like Microsoft could offer future Cods but only on gamepass and offer that to Sony. If Sony say no, then MS can say that they offered and sony turned it down.
I think it’s a possibility. But I don’t really care either way. I always own both systems and I already have GamePass. It’s great but I want to see what Sony does on the PS5. I go to each system for different reasons. I’ll happily keep doing so.
I hope so but if not then it’s not the end of the world.
Game pass is overrated. I got a free trial with my new gaming pc and all I played was halo infinite. Most other games that I wanted to play I already owned.
I definitely see game pass coming to PlayStation but probably with some limitations on games included on the service. I think it would be smart to market a XBOX game pass with XBOX exclusives on PlayStation. It would help to get PlayStation only gamers into XBOX's ecosystem potentially growing the service overall.
@Saitama117 “Most other games that I wanted to play I already owned.”
That’s an argument for it’s value - you’re granting they’re games you would pay for. Imagine if you hadn’t paid for those games? That’s huge value.
Sure you can’t get your money back, but that tells you if you subscribe they’ll add games you would normally buy.
I don't see xbx exclusives being on ps gamepass,i don't know.
For me it be the only attraction. And it would need be the big new ms devs titles, inxile, obsidian, bethesda.
Even then i need own a game, i play on and off for years a game, a sub you cant be sure when you'll have waisted your money.
This is a good article. After all of the crazy talk over the past few days it's nice to see a more balanced and reasonable story.
I personally don't think PlayStation should allow Game Pass on their consoles but the market will decide whether that happens or not. I'd rather see Sony up their game and focus on their USPs.
I rather they announce a way to get it on SteamDeck without needing to install Windows.
i’d rather nintendo go multiplat instead
What does it really offer though? From a value add perspective, not much.
The only scenario I can see this happening is if MS decides to stop manufacturing Xbox consoles and go full software service with the gamepass.
I don't hate, I participate. I play games not consoles, lets get everyone together on this! HUUZAH!
I could see some sort of modified, and potentially cheaper, version of Gamepass on PS4/PS5 that only included Microsoft's first-party exclusive games. Though, with the way Sony is, I could see them not even allowing that unless all the games are properly ported to PS4/PS5 with support for trophies.
I'm hard-pressed to imagine Sony allowing a version of Gamepass on their consoles that includes third-party games and denies them their traditional 30% cut of the sales.
They won't ever bring it to playstation or ps plus on xbox. However if they did and bundled it within ps plus on all 3 teirs Essential and Extra and Premium would make sense why prices was raised 🤔
